Factors Affecting The Strength And Openability Of Tight Backed, Adhesive Bound, Hardcover Volumes, Geoffrey Hyatt
Factors Affecting The Strength And Openability Of Tight Backed, Adhesive Bound, Hardcover Volumes, Geoffrey Hyatt
Theses
The practice of tight backing adhesive bound, hard cover books has long been thought to enhance durability at the expense of openability. Tight backing is popular in a number of specialized binding markets, the most notable of which is textbook production. Yet despite their prevalence, there is a lack of information available about how the openability and durability characteristics of tight backed books are affected by variable factors in the production process. The purpose of this study was to evaluate three variables involved in the production of tight backed, adhesive bound, hardcover volumes. The three factors considered were bulk of …

A Study Of The Effect Of The Francis Howell Writing Process On The Language Arts Achievement Of Fourth Grade Students, Carolyn Rose
Theses
During the 1986-1987 school year, the Francis Howell School District implemented a formal writing process designed to address students/ deficiencies in language arts. An attempt was made to demonstrate the effectiveness of this program by examining the differences in language arts scores on a standardized achievement test between a class of fourth graders which was not exposed to the writing program--the comparison group, and a similar group which received instruction based on the Francis Howell Writing Process-- the experimental group.
The results of this study Indicated that exposure to the Francis Howell Writing Process did not have a significant impact …
Information Theoretic Analysis Of Multi-Stage Communication/Imaging Systems, William O'Such
Information Theoretic Analysis Of Multi-Stage Communication/Imaging Systems, William O'Such
Theses
A method for the system analysis of a multistage photographic or communication system is developed. By following the input signal through the system and estimating the output signal and the output signal without noise, the information capacity after each stage can be estimated. The relationship between the variance and the integral of the power spectrum is used in accounting for the effects of each of the component characteristics: modulation transfer function, density-log exposure relationship and granularity. This method is implemented in a computer program which allows one to vary the characteristics of the components and determine the resultant changes in …

Theses
This thesis is directed to the area of typography and the affects certain typefaces have on a reader's perception of the message of a text. There have been both empirical and non-empirical studies done that show evidence that connotations and feelings have been associated with typefaces. The intent of this study was to determine the feelings associated with a particular group of typefaces by relating each face to a list of adjective pairs and comparing the results with the content of books which incorporated the face on their jackets. This was to determine whether the content of a book and …
An Evaluation Of The Effect Of Registration On Gcr And Conventional Chromatic Separation Methods In Multicolor Halftone Printing, Chihwe Jeffrey Wang
An Evaluation Of The Effect Of Registration On Gcr And Conventional Chromatic Separation Methods In Multicolor Halftone Printing, Chihwe Jeffrey Wang
Theses
Misregistration is an unavoidable problem in multicolor halftone printing. It causes the loss of detail, sharpness and color hue shift of a reproduction. However, there is a color separation technique called Gray Component Replacement (GCR) which may reduce or eliminate this misregistration effect. An investigation had been conducted using a series of color halftone proofs which were produced by conventional chromatic and GCR color separation techniques. The subjective image quality scaling method was applied to this study as a criterion to determine whether there is an image quality relationship between these two techniques on misregistered reproductions.

A Comparison Of The Resolution Obtainable From Photomechanical And Electrostatic Plates, Michael Fitzpatrick
A Comparison Of The Resolution Obtainable From Photomechanical And Electrostatic Plates, Michael Fitzpatrick
Theses
This thesis addressed the question of what level of resolution was obtainable from the electrostatic plate. Resolution was defined as the ability of a material to record fine detail. Two types of plates were compared, one photomechanical and the other an electrostatic. The photomechanical plate consisted of a light sensitive coating applied to an aluminum1 base . The electrostatic plate consisted of a fused toner image on an aluminum base. The intent of this research was to determine the final resolution, not the forces and factors which effected it. The hypothesis stated that the resulting resolution of the electrostatic plate …
A Model For Non-Image Area Of Offset Lithographic Process, Vinay Chhajlani
A Model For Non-Image Area Of Offset Lithographic Process, Vinay Chhajlani
Theses
Lithography is the most common printing process. However, very little is known about the theory of lithography. Pressroom practices have evolved more out of experience than on the basis of any theory. The objective of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for the non-image area of the offset lithographic plate. A model of this kind would provide a rationalization for the observed behavior in lithographic process. The study concentrates on the various materials and the phenomena involved. Properties of aluminum oxide surface and gum arabic that make them suitable for the process have been presented. Rheological properties of …

Effects Of Exposure On The Printing Characteristics Of The Association Product Process, Claude David Davis
Theses
The investigation examined the printing characteristics of the association product plate, a continuous tone lithographic process which utilizes a synthetic, light-sensitive coating variably ink-receptive according to the degree of exposure it receives. The methodology was designed to determine (1) the printing range of the plate, (2) the effective sensitivity of the coating to varying amounts of exposure within this range, and (3) the degree to which adherence to ideal tone reproduction could be achieved through systematic variation of exposure. The plate is not commercially available, therefore it was necessary to consult patent literature and prior research to obtain details of …
The Application Of Cie Lab To Study Trapping Efficiency, Patchanee Malikhao
The Application Of Cie Lab To Study Trapping Efficiency, Patchanee Malikhao
Theses
It has been known that apparent trapping percentages caused by changing printing sequence (or printing order) affect the color appearance of the overprint areas. However, no other studies in the past were done in a standard color measurement system- that is the CIE system. This thesis was conducted in order to learn how the selected printing sequences yellow- magenta-cyan-black, black-cyan-magenta-yellow, yellow-magenta-cyan-black, and cyan-magenta-yellow-black- of a monotack process ink yield the color gamuts on the CIE LAB color space. Since the two sequences: yellow-magenta-cyan-black and cyan-magenta-yellow-black, were recommended to be adopted as standard sequences for SWOP inks, this reseach attempted to …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Blocked Isocyanate Dental Adhesive Based On Diphenylmethane - 4, 4' - Diisocyanate, Yangming Lin
Theses
The dental adhesive monomers based on diphenylmethane - 4,4 - diisocyanate (MDI) were prepared and studied in this research. The diisocyanate, MDI, was first reacted with hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) to form an intermediate adduct. This adduct had an active isocyanate end group. It was then bonded with o-chlorophenol (OCP), a blocking agent, to produce a blocked isocyanate monomer.
The new blocked isocyanate (HEMA-MDI-OCP) was found to have an average value of more than 1200 psi in tensile tests measuring its adhesion to dentin slices.

The Switch Capacitor Biquad Filter And It's Application On Active Filter Design, Sung-Chiang Chang
Theses
The purpose of this subject is to use the programmable switch capacitor filter to design a traditional analog filter which usually cause a tedious job on finding a group of values for resistors and capacitors. We start from the basic concept of switch capacitor, then we learn to use auxiliary equipment to design a filter. To design the desired filter, first, we have to find the s-domain transfer function, then transfer it to the z-domain. After we found the coefficients of z-domain transfer function, we have to implement this on the auxiliary equipment. Then we will get the desired filter.

Calculation Of Heat Transfer At The Center Of A Round Plate, In Forced Convection Stagnation Flow, Ali Rohafza
Theses
The theoretical study presented here examines heat transfer at the center of a round plate, in forced convection stagnation flow.
Note that in the region of stagnation point, the flow is always laminar.
Important results presented include the variations of the similarity function f and its derivative f’ with the vertical coordinate; these results were found by using the power series method to solve the governing non-linear differential equation. In order to do that , certain things were assumed like, for example, as the point at which two solutions were spliced, η0 =2.0, or assuming the solution at η …
