In 1958, Preucil suggested an equation to calculate ink trap based on measurements of a printed sheet with a densitometer. Preucil's equation was based on the additivity rule and the proportional rule. However, these rules do not hold in all cases. Several alternative equations have been suggested. This study intends to examine the effectiveness of three ink trap equations using densitometry by means of comparing the calculated values to those measured by the gravimetric method. An attempt is also made to estimate the value of maximum printable density, Dm, in Hamilton's equation. The theoretical basis of each equation is briefly …

Quality issues are receiving increasing attention from many industries. The commercial printing industry is showing similar concern. Quality is often used as a marketing tool. This thesis surveys the top management of American commercial printing companies on their awareness of, practice of, and benefit from currently recognized quality control concepts and methods. The National Association of Printers and Lithographers assisted in the survey by providing design and mailing services. The survey mailing went to the membership of N.A.P.L. and to an additional fifteen hundred commercial printing companies. This document is a report on the research of a potentially superior method of color image transformation for producing rapid and accurate printed color output from a digitized color image. The primary objective is to reduce the complexities, inaccuracies, objectionable artifacts, and processing time common to current methods of color modeling. A new method of vector-corrected mathematical modeling combined with improved color space interpolation is studied. This achievement allows for rapid automatic closed-loop color-match calibration between image capture and output devices. An Investigation Of Electrophoresis Gel Silver Staining Using Large Area Sample Inclusive Polymerization, Lloyd C. Litt

An electrophoresis silver stain was investigated using a unique method of sample introduction in polyacrylamide gel media. A protein inclusive polymerization technique is described that produces large area gels with controlled protein concentration steps. Using gels with Bovine Serum Albumin sample steps, an organic dye stain, Coomassie Brilliant Blue was found to be extremely linear in stain response. When used on a published silver stain (Merril,et. al.) a non-linearity caused by a diffuse background density was observed.

Optically transparent heat mirror films, reflective in the infrared, have been produced based on a dielectric - metal - dielectric design using zinc sulfide and silver coatings. Filters exhibit 87% peak transmission in the visible region, while reflecting 80%. in the infrared. Thermal testing indicated the that the layer filters were unstable to treatments above 300 F. Incorporation of thin barrier coatings of magnesium fluoride between the silver and zinc sulfide lavers produced filters with thermal stability to 700 F while retaining optical characteristics of the three laver svstem. These optical and thermal properties offer possible application for the heat …

It actually seems as though I was bouncing back and forth between solving the technical problems and the creation of the films. the project was large and each aspect might have been more successful if I had not had to split my concentration in this manner. On the other hand I have an interest in both types of endeavor and both parts were necessary to the whole. I suppose the solution (as always) would have been simply having more time.

Higher operating speeds and increased sensitivity of modern electro-mechanical systems require improved methods for the computation of critical speeds and system response of flexible rotating shafts. Many high-speed systems generally contain disks with masses approaching the mass of the shaft. These observations emphasize the importance of including the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation of the shaft in the analysis. Stress and resistivity in sputtered copper films on glass and polyimide (Kapton H) substrates were studied as functions of deposition rate and argon working gas pressure. For deposition rates from 1 A/sec to 5 A/sec, three regions were studied at different argon gas pressures : (1) a compressive region at 2 mTorr, (2) a tensile region at 10 mTorr and (3) an intermediate region at 3.5 mTorr with a deposition rate of 4.8 A/sec corresponding to the transition from the tensile to the compressive region. Neutron activation analysis has been used for provenance determinations of Bronze Age pottery from two cities in the Jordan River and Dead Sea areas . A pottery shard group believed to represent the local clay composition of one of the sites based on statistical clustering procedures was used with a dilution factor method developed by H. Mommsen and colleagues (1) to determine the origin of the shards. Based on the dilution factor method, a provenance determination has been established for three of the thirty - two shards analyzed. Cardiac pump function is closely linked to myocardial oxygen supply during the cardiac cycle. Variations in cardiac output must be met with concurrent shifts in tissue blood flow if changing myocardial oxygen requirements are to be satisfied. Of particular importance is the adequate perfusion of the left ventricular myocardium. Experimental evidence indicates that some ninety percent of left ventricular oxygen demand is generated during systolic contraction of the myocardium. Paradoxically, blood flow measurements in the left coronary artery suggest minimal systolic perfusion. The asynchronous, phasic character of left coronary blood flow and myocardial oxygen demand has prompted much research into …

A study is described in which the effects of the atmosphere on a remotely sensed, multispectral image of water are reduced in a spatially varying manner. The near zero IR reflectance of a water body is used to compute the atmospheric path transmittance and atmospheric path radiance on a pixel-by-pixel basis for a LANDSAT-5 Thematic Mapper image of Lake Ontario. TM Band 4 (0.76-0.90um) image radiance measures are used to define the atmospheric path radiance. The ordered-dither halftoning technique which reproduces continuous tones with spatially encoded binary imaging elements uses the digital halftone screen. The effect at the microstructural level of four screens on tone reproduction, spatial signal reproduction, and quantization noise is evaluated by measuring the tone reproduction curve (TRC), the two-dimensional Fourier transform of a constant density patch, the degree of harmonic distortion (THD), the system Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), and the Wiener Spectrum (WS) produced by each screen. A study into the use of reflecting tiles to determine spectrophotometric errors and the corresponding correction values was accomplished. A method was developed to calculate the wavelength scale accuracy (out to a wavelength error of 5nm) using the inflection points of reflecting tiles' spectrophotometric curves. Using simulated error data, wavelength accuracy was determinable at seven distinct wavelengths over the range of 440 nm to 705 nm within an accuracy of 0.2 nm. Three methods, the Matrix, Selection, and Non-Linear, were developed to increase the accuracy of spectrophotometric data. Each method determined and corrected spectrophotometric data differently. The Matrix method was …
