A Dynamic Cmos Programmable Logic Device, Praveen K. Parvathala
A Dynamic Cmos Programmable Logic Device, Praveen K. Parvathala
Theses
This thesis presents the design of a Dynamic CMOS Programmable Logic Device chip (NJIT PLD). The main feature of the chip is its reconfigurability and the provision of a processor interface which makes the chip capable of performing coprocessor like functions. The chip has been designed to be used with the Intel 8088 microprocessor, but may also find stand-alone applications. Provision is made for dynamic reconfiguration of the chip. The configuration data for the chip comes from a serial PROM, to which the chip sends a synchronizing clock. The NJIT PLD is a high performance, digital integrated circuit. It has …
Nonlinear, Metal-Clad Optical Waveguide, Bhavesh Patel
Nonlinear, Metal-Clad Optical Waveguide, Bhavesh Patel
Theses
Planar optical waveguides consisting of different types of films including nonlinear films with metal cladding have been studied theoretically. Ideal metal cladding with σ = ∞ and nonideal metal cladding with σ ≠ ∞, that is, with complex refractive index is considered to get electric field and wave number for TE0 mode. For nonlinear material, approximate solution is derived in a series form using Rayleigh-Schrodinger method. The appropriate eigenvalue equations are solved by Newton-Raphson iteration method. For self-focusing media in the center, the propagation constant increases with increasing power and with self-focusing media in the cladding the propagation constant …

Experimental Evaluation Of J-Integral For Fiber Reinforced Concrete Subjected To Impact Loading, Piyushkumar Patel
Theses
This research presents an experimental Evaluation of J-Integral for Fiber Reinforced Concrete Subjected to Impact Loading. Three-point edge notched bend specimen were employed in evaluation of J-Integral using both the multi-specimen, and the single specimen techniques. In the multi-specimen technique three different notch lengths were employed for extracting the energetic fracture parameter JIc. In the single specimen technique, the method developed by Rice[13] was used to evaluate JIc at three different notch lengths.
Different proportions of fiber were employed in determining the JIc values. Experimental results from present study indicates that the JIc values calculated …

Study Of Ionized Cluster Beam Techniques For Reactive Deposition Of Gallium Nitride Thin Films, Jyh Sheen
Theses
This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part investigates the Ionized Cluster Beam( ICB ) technique through measurements of the energy of ionized gallium beam. The presence of ions and their kinetic energy in the ICB technique is advantageous in the formation process of thin film. The results of retarding potential measurement are comparable with the presence of clusters as large as 500 atoms. The second part examines the formation of gallium nitride thin film. In order to enhance the reaction of gallium and nitrogen, dissociation of molecular nitrogen by microwave discharge method was used to generate atomic …
Towards A Bound For The Compression Of The Lzw Algorithm, Anoop Kumar Srivastava, Shinu Gupta
Towards A Bound For The Compression Of The Lzw Algorithm, Anoop Kumar Srivastava, Shinu Gupta
Theses
The LZW algorithm is a well known efficient adaptive compression algorithm. It is based on constructing a dictionary containing character strings from the text. A number of researchers have attempted to add variations to the original algorithm to achieve higher compression values. In this thesis we attempt to find a bound for the LZW approach. That is, we build a dictionary which gives maximum compression and satisfies prefix property of LZW algorithm.
In order to build such an optimum dictionary, the dynamic programming technique is applied. The final dictionary selected consists of entries which give maximum overall compression and also …

Design Of Governor-Turbine Models In Stability Studies, Vidyanand Swaminathan
Theses
This thesis investigates the effect of hydro governor-turbine models on the steady state stability of an automatically controlled electric power system. Basically two kinds of hydro governor-turbine models, namely, Impulse and Francis type are studied in depth. Design of a compensating network has also been proposed, which can help improve the stability conditions of a power system which employs a poor governor-turbine model.
The power system investigated includes a large sized hydro generating unit connected to an infinite bus via a power network. This generator employs a modern three-channel fast-acting automatic voltage regulator (AVR). For any operating condition, stability results …

Efficient Design Of Trellis Coded Cpfsk, Hsinhsyong Yang
Theses
In this thesis convolutional coded continuous-phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK) is studied.
CPFSK which is a subclass of continuous phase modulation ( CPM ) is a constant amplitude digital modulation scheme with very good spectral characteristics.
A new method, called matched encoding, that combines convolutional codes and CPFSK is studied. With the maximum free Euclidean distance as the optimization criterion, the best combined coded schemes were found for the same rate of the codes and given total number of states in the optimum decoder.
A different method which was suggested by Rimoldi[7], called the decomposition method, is also described in …

Rays And Beams Near The Shadow Boundary, Weixing Gao
Rays And Beams Near The Shadow Boundary, Weixing Gao
Theses
Asymptotic techniques in wave propagation problems exhibit attractive features in computational aspects compared to numerical methods. However, they experience problems in complicated environments due to the transition regions associated with them. The transition region involving a shadow boundary in the downward refractive index profile has been investigated. The ray paths were determined solving the ray equation analytically. The Green's function due to a line source is constructed and evaluated using numerical integration (reference solution) and asymptotic techniques. Then, the field produced by the source, is synthesized, using superposition of beams generated from complex source point representation. The floating parameters such …
Design Of A Gear Driven Anti-Twister Mechanism For A Seal-Less Blood Processor, Ajit Nachiket Dastane
Design Of A Gear Driven Anti-Twister Mechanism For A Seal-Less Blood Processor, Ajit Nachiket Dastane
Theses
This thesis presents the design of a gear driven anti- twister mechanism for a blood cell separator. The anti- twister mechanism allows for continuous feed and discharge lines that are rigidly attached to the rotating centrifuge head, thus eliminating the need of rotating seals. It is anticipated that the device using a gear driven anti-twister mechanism will have smoother power transmission and closer rpm tolerances.
In addition, a procedure for the dynamic analysis of the existing device, which uses a belt-driven anti-twister mechanism, is developed. The experimental values obtained from the device are compared with the theoretical values obtained by …

Selection And Analysis Of Optimal Textural Features For Accurate Classification Of Monochrome Digitized Image Data, Denis J. Robert
Selection And Analysis Of Optimal Textural Features For Accurate Classification Of Monochrome Digitized Image Data, Denis J. Robert
Theses
A feature-selection technique based on measures of global class separability in multidimensional feature space is proposed for classifying monochrome digitized imagery by machine. Feature-selection procedures are an essential step in optimal classification in reduced feature space. Textural features constitute the type of measurements used to characterize image data due to its monochrome nature. IV The ability of the proposed feature-selection technique to provide an optimal environment for classifying image pixels is measured by the Gaussian Maximum Likelihood method. The appropriateness of using textural features to characterize monochrome digital image data is assessed in similar fashion. The robustness of the proposed …
A Graphic Identity Program For The Thousand Acre Swamp Sanctuary, Cynthia B. Hummel
A Graphic Identity Program For The Thousand Acre Swamp Sanctuary, Cynthia B. Hummel
Theses
People have often failed to appreciate the significance of wetlands. Lack of awareness has caused wetlands to be drained, filled, and polluted, to meet shortterm human needs. One half of the original 215 million acres of wetlands in the United States no longer exist. Best estimates indicate that we are continuing to loose 458,000 acres of our remaining wetlands each year. Wetlands have an enormous ability to produce and support plant and animal life. They rank among the most productive ecosystems in the world, and produce as much plant growth as tropical jungles, and 20 times as much plant material …

Use Of An Incorparated Hardening Develpoer To Produce A Phase Modulated Hologram In A Silver Halide Material, Geoffrey B. Gretton
Theses
A holographic material is investigated which uses an incorporated hardening developer in a fine grain silver halide emulsion to first obtain a hardening modulation in the gelatin, and then convert the hardening modulation to a refractive index modulation by alcohol dehydration similar to the dichromated gel process. The hardening modulation is observed but conversion to a refractive index modulation by alcohol dehydration is not seen. The feasibility and problems of the material are evaluated.

An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Optimum Tone Reproduction And Reproduction Size, Thomas A. Benson
An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Optimum Tone Reproduction And Reproduction Size, Thomas A. Benson
Theses
The thesis is an evaluation of preferred tone reproduction as a function of reproduction size. When photographs are reproduced photomechanically using the halftone process the main limitation in achieving a facsimile reproduction is the density range of the printing process. Because the printing processes normally used cannot achieve the same high density range as a photograph, tonal compression must occur. The manner in which the tonal compression is achieved has an important effect upon the appearance of the reproduction. The tone reproduction curve is a graphic method used to describe the relationship between the density of the original and the …

A Study On Doubling In The Offset Printing Process, Amal A. Ba'adarani
A Study On Doubling In The Offset Printing Process, Amal A. Ba'adarani
Theses
The purpose of this study was to test the usefulness of the Experimental RIT Doubling Target in identifying directional dot gain in the offset printing process. Doubling, a form of mechanical dot gain, contributes greatly to color variations while printing. Slur, another form of mechanical dot gain, is often confused with doubling. Dot Gain Test Targets currently in use often do not distinguish between the two. A slur test was carried out and the results showed that slur is not a contributor to directional dot gain. The target proved to be a visual and quantitative measure of Directional and Non-directional …
