Application Of Microwave Technology To Effect On-Site Regeneration Of Gac, K.C. Mahesh Dec 1989

Application Of Microwave Technology To Effect On-Site Regeneration Of Gac, K.C. Mahesh

Theses

The off-site regeneration of granulated activated charcoal(GAC), spent as a result of stripping of organics from aqueous waste streams, represents a burdensome cost both because of the actual cost of regeneration and legal liability associated with shipping a hazardous waste off-site: that liability is reflected in huge potential costs associated with mishaps enroute for the self-insured or high premiums paid to the casualty insurance companies for those generators that are insured by third parties. Thus there is a need for the development of a process to effect on-site regeneration of spent GAC cost-effectively.

This thesis mainly focuses on the technical …

Fourier Image Synthesis And Slope Spectrum Analysis Of Deepwater, Wind-Wave Scenes Viewed At Brewster's Angle, Jan Arthur North Dec 1989

Fourier Image Synthesis And Slope Spectrum Analysis Of Deepwater, Wind-Wave Scenes Viewed At Brewster's Angle, Jan Arthur North

Theses

A semi-empirical model for the Fourier synthesis of deepwater, wind-wave scenes has been constructed for the analysis of water-wave slope spectra. The main simplifying assumptions of this model are 1) fully-developed wind-wave surfaces are quasi-homogeneous, quasi -stationary and are therefore treatable by Fourier methods, 2) the subsurface is both optically and mechanically deep, and 3) the small range of spectral wave components defines a fetch-limited, small amplitude condition. A nonlinear transformation of wave slope to reflected and refracted radiance in both horizontal and vertical polarizations was effected under the special conditions of Brewster-angle viewing under clear skies at a spectral …

Weiser introduces the GET model—Gifts, Endowments, and Tuition—as the financial foundation of private colleges and underscores the critical function of admissions in sustaining institutional viability. The study …

Employer Supported Childcare, Mark James Winstel Dec 1989

Employer Supported Childcare, Mark James Winstel

Theses

One of the more progressive types of employee benefits a company can offer to its work force is that consisting of child care.

While more and more businesses are getting into the concern, still only 10% to 15% of all firms have such a package to give their employees. There appear to be many advantages to having a benefits offering. Studies have determined there would be a reduction in absenteeism and turnover, improved hiring and recruitment, and even better productivity, to name a few.

Today, the typical family of the male wage earner with spouse and kids at home has …

A Study Of The Effects Of Paper, Ink And Drying Techniques On Lithographic Ink Transfers During Electrophotographic Imprinting, Lisa Rentschler Nov 1989

A Study Of The Effects Of Paper, Ink And Drying Techniques On Lithographic Ink Transfers During Electrophotographic Imprinting, Lisa Rentschler

Theses

Product end use dictates the materials used to produce a printed piece. If flexographic printers are purchasing ink for a packaging carton job, they don't choose a scuff prone ink. The same should be true for printers producing letterheads for subsequent use in electrophotographic equipment . Electrophotography is an image transfer process that uses the principles of electrostatics. An Ektaprint 200 copier/duplicator charges the surface of a sheet exposing an image area, develops that image, affixes toner to that image and then mechanically traps the toner to the surface of the substrate using heat and/or pressure. When a litho graphically …

Bible Binding Techniques: Analysis Of Spine Lining Constructions And Endpaper Reinforcements, Hyung-Sun Kim Nov 1989

Bible Binding Techniques: Analysis Of Spine Lining Constructions And Endpaper Reinforcements, Hyung-Sun Kim

Theses

The Bible has been the largest selling book title in the world. However, very little research of Bible binding techniques has been done. Most Bibles contain more than two thousand pages of Bible paper. Therefore, such books are usually thick and heavy. Thin bible papers provide very little strength for the joint. The strength and durability of a bound product depends on good joint adhesion. The goal of this study was to investigate various joint constructions between the cover and the bookblock of Smyth-sewn Bible bindings. The spine lining and endpaper reinforcement are two most important factors of joint construction. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Poly(Ester-Imide)S, Fei Nie Nov 1989

Synthesis And Characterization Of Poly(Ester-Imide)S, Fei Nie

Theses

A series of novel ordered poly(ester-imide)s were synthesized using both solution and melt polymerization techniques and their liquid crystal properties studied. Commercially available 6-aminohexanoic acid and 11-aminoundecanoic acid were reacted with 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic anhydride (PMDA) by a melt reactions to give -pyromellitimide dicarboxylic acid derivatives. These derivatives were treated with thionyl chloride to give -pyromellitimide dicarboxylic dichloride derivatives which were reacted with a series of diols having six, eight, nine, ten and twelve methylene units in their structural units by a solution polymerization technique, using refluxing 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene as solvent. These same diols were treated with acetic anhydride to produce a series …

Toward A Model Of Instruction For Architecture Design Studio, Garry Allen Perryman Oct 1989

Toward A Model Of Instruction For Architecture Design Studio, Garry Allen Perryman

Theses

This inquiry addresses some fundamental issues raised in a debate over the effectiveness of architecture studio instruction. It argues that as currently structured the studio's potential effectiveness is often unrealized, because of the paucity of standardized educational resources and instructor's lack of training in educational theories of instruction. This has resulted in instructional planning that is seldom structured on educational theory or research. It is also argued that in order to maximize it's effectiveness, beginning studio instruction must be premised upon a theory of instruction which includes specifying explicit instructional goals and objectives and that this would create a more …

Study Of Acetone Extractable Organic Matter From Airborne Particulate Matter From An Urban Site, Wenhui Wu Sep 1989

Study Of Acetone Extractable Organic Matter From Airborne Particulate Matter From An Urban Site, Wenhui Wu

Theses

Two seasonal periods (Winter 1988; Summer 1988) of daily Newark urban air samples were collected on glass fiber filters. Each filter was first extracted with dichloromethane and subsequently with acetone. Quarterly composites of each were then tested for mutagenicity. The results of the analysis of the less polar dichloromethane extracts were reported in the thesis of Junghen Lwo. A modified fractionation scheme involving acid-base partitioning and silica gel column chromatography has been used as the first step in the bioassay-directed search for significant levels of mutagenic compounds in extracts of inhalable (IP 10) ambient air particulates. The biologically "hot" fractions …

Robotic Arms With Flexible Links As The Links Approach Rigidity, George A. Downes Sep 1989

Robotic Arms With Flexible Links As The Links Approach Rigidity, George A. Downes

Theses

The dynamics of single link flexible robotic arms are modeled using the Bernoulli-Euler beam equation and Lagrange's equation. The Bernoulli-Euler beam equation derivation is reviewed and is studied in the limiting case as the flexiblity approaches zero. Using the Bernoulli-Euler beam equation, a procedure is developed to calculate the position of the endpoint of a link given the displacement, slope or curvature of any point on the link. Also a procedure is developed to calculate the minimum Young's modulus of elasticity, E, given a specified endpoint displacement tolerance.

A rigid link model based on Lagrange's equation and a flexible link …

Process Modelling Of The Nitration Of Toluene, Nitin K. Shah Sep 1989

Process Modelling Of The Nitration Of Toluene, Nitin K. Shah

Theses

The thesis on the process modelling of the nitration process focuses specifically on the product separation of the nitrated aromatic material from the reactor and - wash section of the process. Included in the text is an overview of the main process steps associated with the production of para and ortho-nitrotoluene. The critical issues concerning the reaction of nitric acid and toluene were summerized, and resulted in this subject being deferred for future work.

The separation of the isomers into pure components is an important. part of the MNT process because of the close high boiling points of the isomeric …

Thermal Decomposition Of Chlorobenzene Reaction With Hydrogen And Oxygen Mixture In An Atmosphere, Chun-Chen Yang Sep 1989

Thermal Decomposition Of Chlorobenzene Reaction With Hydrogen And Oxygen Mixture In An Atmosphere, Chun-Chen Yang

Theses

The thermal reactions of chlorobenzene in hydrogen and oxygen mixtures were studied in tubular flow reactors at 1 atmosphere total pressure. Experiments were carried out in flow reactors of varied diameter for determining effects of different surface to volume ratios. Residence times ranged from 0.03 to 2.5 seconds and temperature was varied over a range of 560 - 660 °C. The 02/H2 ratios ranged from 1% to 5%.

It was found that the conversion of chlorobenzene in hydrogen and oxygen mixtures increased with both temperature and residence time. The oxidation of chlorobenzene also occurred more rapidly when oxygen concentraction was …

Agitation Requirements For Complete Drawdown Of Floating Solids In Stirred Tanks, Joseph Philemon Mmbaga Sep 1989

Agitation Requirements For Complete Drawdown Of Floating Solids In Stirred Tanks, Joseph Philemon Mmbaga

Theses

The agitation requirements for complete drawdown of floating solids in mechanically agitated tank vessels has been studied both theoretically and experimentally.

A semi-theoretical equation has been derived on the basis of Kolmogoroff's theory of isotropic turbulence to determine the minimum impeller speed required for drawdown. The equation contains one adjustable parameter which has been found to be a function of the impeller type and position in the tank vessel.

The equation was tested using various vessels and impeller configurations. The solid phase consisted of high density polyethylene (density = 897kg/m3), low density polyethylene (density = 840kg/m3) …

Self-Efficacy And Motivation : An Unexplored Relationship, Elizabeth Angela Dixon Sep 1989

Self-Efficacy And Motivation : An Unexplored Relationship, Elizabeth Angela Dixon

Theses

There is a need for models of motivation which emphasize individual differences. Many studies cited in the literature indicate that differences in personality influence work performance, and the way individuals react to various job stimuli. As such, research efforts should be directed towards examining the interaction between specific personality traits such as self-efficacy and motivation. When studies of this nature are conducted, motivational strategies aimed at improving performance, can be designed with more attention to individual differences.

Reliability Prediction Of Vulcanized Fibre Using Electrical Noise As A Screening Parameter, George A. Donos Sep 1989

Reliability Prediction Of Vulcanized Fibre Using Electrical Noise As A Screening Parameter, George A. Donos

Theses

The main objective of this thesis was to find a correlation between the electrical noise generated within the body of Vulcanized Fibre in insulating service and the time of its breakdown under a synergy of electrical, thermal and mechanical stresses. Failure was defined as a material discontinuity, puncture, under accelerated life test conditions. Radio frequency measurements of the partial discharges occuring in the voids of the material were performed on 1240 samples of vulcanized fibre with 10 mil thickness. The level of electrical noise measured was used to classify the specimens into the three following categories: (a) Low Noise:0-2.8μV (0-9db), …
