A Dynamic Scheduling Monitor For A Manufacturing Process, Gregory Weilnau Jan 1990

A Dynamic Scheduling Monitor For A Manufacturing Process, Gregory Weilnau

Theses

Dynamic scheduling is the ability to create an effective schedule based on the current state of a manufacturing factory. I have developed such a scheduler for an injection molding department. The molding department provides the "factory" for which the schedule is created. In order to test my scheduling algorithm, I have developed three modules that form a complete factory model. A user interface allows access to the factory system. A factory database system permits the user to create and maintain the data that is required. The schedule and run module creates a schedule and then, simulates the schedule being run …

Ray Tracing For Constructive Solid Modeling, Anju Sharma Mccanna Jan 1990

Ray Tracing For Constructive Solid Modeling, Anju Sharma Mccanna

Theses

This thesis describes a system for the creation and realistic depiction of non-geometric, complex, three dimensional solid models by utilizing a ray tracing algorithm and a graphics relational database. Geometric primitives such as a sphere, cylinder, block, and cone are combined together by using the Boolean set operations of union (+), intersection (&), and difference (-). The three dimensional solid models are built based on the concept of constructive solid geometric modeling. The database provides functions for the creation, transformation, and deletion of the primitives and models. A model may be displayed as a wireframe for a fast display or …

Network Security: Risk Assessment Of Information Systems, Sher Lurain Jan 1990

Network Security: Risk Assessment Of Information Systems, Sher Lurain

Theses

This paper investigates fundamental security issues and the growing impact of security breaches on computer networks. Cost-effective security measures, such as asset-threat analysis, enable monitoring of security levels in complex systems. An evaluation of one technique, called the Livermore Risk Analysis Methodology (LRAM) is documentedC 1 ] . Untrusted communication lines, unauthorized access and unauthorized dissemination of information must be contained. The complexity and corresponding sophistication of todays' systems and the reliance of management on information generated by these systems make them attractive targets for computer related crimes. A profile of computer criminals and their crimes emphasize the importance of …

Free Space Laser Communications On The Macintosh Computers, Sohrab Modi Jan 1990

Free Space Laser Communications On The Macintosh Computers, Sohrab Modi

Theses

Lasers have proved their reliability in high speed communications through fibre optics. The disadvantage with fibre optics is the high cost and the need for a cable to connect the sender to the receivers, hence making it impractical to have fibre optic cables over large distances. The move today is to communicate between points with a free space laser ( ie. a beam unbounded by cables). Semi conductor lasers as used in fibre optic cables are generally not strong enough to communicate over very large distances. Hence a high power laser is used with a modulation technique to transmit this …

Crt-Based Dialogs: Theory And Design, Jonathan Levine Jan 1990

Crt-Based Dialogs: Theory And Design, Jonathan Levine

Theses

CRT (cathode ray tube) based, direct selection dialogs for computing machines and systems were apparently a cure for issues like ease of learning and ease of use. But unforeseen ~ and probably unforeseeable problems arose as increasingly sophisticated systems and dialogs were developed. This paper describes some of the emerging problems in CRT-based dialog design, develops theories about why they occur, and discusses potential solutions for them as a basis for future research. This investigation also provides a survey of the research into what makes programming and programming languages difficult, and what makes them simple.

Shift-Invariant Image Reconstruction Of Speckle-Degraded Using Bispectrum Estimation, Steven M. Wear Jan 1990

Shift-Invariant Image Reconstruction Of Speckle-Degraded Using Bispectrum Estimation, Steven M. Wear

Theses

Coherent speckle noise is modeled as a multiplicative noise process that has a negative exponential probability density function. Using a homomorphic transfor mation, this speckle noise is converted to a signal-independent, additive process. The speckled images are randomly jittered from frame-to-frame against a uniform background to simulate image motion and/or platform jitter. Multiple images are logarithmically transformed and ensemble averaged in the bispectral domain. The bispectrum ignores this image motion so no blurring results from the ensemble averaging. Object Fourier magnitude and phase information are also retained in the bispectrum so that the resultant image can be uniquely reconstructed. This …

Simulation And Analysis Of A Digital Scanning System, Eugene A. Rogalski Jan 1990

Simulation And Analysis Of A Digital Scanning System, Eugene A. Rogalski

Theses

The analysis and simulation of the motion of a digitally-controlled digital imaging system is presented. The dynamic system consists of a scanning carriage, power transmission elements, a prime mover, and a control subsystem. The prime mover is a permanent magnet DC motor that is positioned by a direct digital control system. The scan carriage motion is mathematically modeled and simulated using ACSL and DADS simulation software. T he simulation results are compared to empirical data. It is shown that the dynamic response of the actual scan system can be predicted quite well using such simulations. Furthermore, these simulations can aid …

The Effect Of Flexographic Printing On The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Shipping Containers, Michael Reese Eyre, Nancy Kaczor

Theses

This study examined the effect of flexographic printing, using both natural rubber and photopolymer printing plates, on the top-to-bottom compression strength of RSC style shipping containers. six sets of factors were studied including, 1) Print location on panels (center, one-inch to edge); 2) Number of panels printed (two majors, all four); 3) Print coverage (15%, 30%); 4) Number of colors of print (one-, two-color); 5) Flute size (B, C); and 6) Shape of print (square, rectangle). Individual sets of printing plates were produced to represent each factor studied. The containers were manufactured during an "on-line" production run under standard operating …

Modeling Of Light Absorption In Solid State Imagers, Robert H. Philbrick Jan 1990

Modeling Of Light Absorption In Solid State Imagers, Robert H. Philbrick

Theses

In this paper, a model for predicting the quantum efficiency and responsivity of silicon based solid state photodiodes is presented. The model is first developed using semiconductor theory and then implemented in a computer software program. Correct operation of the modeling program is verified by comparing the published reflectance curves of several silicon dioxide-silicon substrate samples with the reflectance curves produced by the modeling program. Next, a system capable of measuring photodiode quantum efficiency and responsivity is presented and used to measure quantum efficiency and responsivity for a photodiode specimen. Finally, the measured and modeled quantum efficiency and responsivity results …

Mechanical Properties Of Polymeric Packaging Films After Radiation Sterilization, Viriya Pungthong Jan 1990

Mechanical Properties Of Polymeric Packaging Films After Radiation Sterilization, Viriya Pungthong

Theses

The use of radiation as a sterilization process is increasing. The well-developed technology of the radiation sterilization as applied to medical devices has assured the food industry that the process is reliable. Due to the food industry's possibility of widespread use, it is especially crucial that an appropriate packaging material be chosen so that its integrity is maintained after irradiation. This is because the commercial food packaging process carries products through more rigorous paths and channels than medical supplies. Many polymers used in the medical field show various degrees of degradation after radiation exposure, which can be determined either by …

Penthesilea: Woman As Hero, George Totskas Jan 1990

Penthesilea: Woman As Hero, George Totskas

Theses

It is my intention to create a visual epic drama with a woman as its hero. This Female hero will go through a journey that will metaphorically correspond to points of conflict of womanhood (through the ages) with institutions of power. The viewer is called to interact with the artwork on an aesthetic level first. Then he/she is invited to explore the story line - a combination of the artwork. Finally, the viewer is challenged to interpret the drama by using the titles of each individual piece.

Internetworking: An Analysis And Proposal, Gary M. Diana Jan 1990

Internetworking: An Analysis And Proposal, Gary M. Diana

Theses

As the number of computer networks has grown, so has the desire for users on these networks to communicate with each other, thus the need for internetworking. Unfortunately, many of these networks were not designed with internetworking capabilities in mind. The internetworking facilities offered by a typical network range from non-existent to state of the art. Two major efforts towards internetworking are the DARPA Internet protocols and the OSI Internetworking protocols. The goals of this thesis are to acquaint the reader with the qualities which are desired in an internetworking scheme, to describe how internetworking is accomplished currently, and how …

Uncertainty Reasoning And Representation: A Comparison Of Several Alternative Approaches, Barbara S. Smith Jan 1990

Uncertainty Reasoning And Representation: A Comparison Of Several Alternative Approaches, Barbara S. Smith

Theses

Much of the research done in Artificial Intelligence involves investigating and developing methods of incorporating uncertainty reasoning and representation into expert systems. Several methods have been proposed and attempted for handling uncertainty in problem solving situations. The theories range from numerical approaches based on strict probabilistic reasoning to non-numeric approaches based on logical reasoning. This study investigates a number of these approaches including Bayesian Probability, Mycin Certainty Factors, Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence, Fuzzy Set Theory, Possibility Theory and non monotonic logic. Each of these theories and their underlying formalisms are explored by means of examples. The discussion concentrates on a …

Speech Intelligibility Estimation Via Neural Networks, Stephen Knight Jan 1990

Speech Intelligibility Estimation Via Neural Networks, Stephen Knight

Theses

Current methods of speech intelligibility estimation rely on the subjective judgements of trained listeners. Accurate and unbiased intelligibility estimates have a number of procedural and/or methodological constraints including the necessity for large pools of listeners and a wide variety of stimulus materials. Recent research findings however, have shown a strong relationship between speech intelligibility estimates and selected acoustic speech parameters which appear to determine the intelligibility of speech. These findings suggest that such acoustic speech parameters could be used to derive computer-based speech intelligibility estimation, obviating the procedural and methodological constraints typically associated with such estimates. The relationship between speech …

Inspections: Software Development Process For Building Defect Free Software Applied In A Small-Scale Software Development Environment, Patricia A. Sherwood

Theses

Inspections is a software management technique designed to produce higher quality software and improve programmer productivity. These improvements are achieved through rigorous examination of the products in each phase of the software development life-cycle. While the process has generally been applied to large-scale mainframe projects, this research demonstrates successful implementation of inspections in a small-scale, micro-processor based software development project.

Enhancements To The Xns Authentication-By-Proxy Model, Peter D. Wing Jan 1990

Enhancements To The Xns Authentication-By-Proxy Model, Peter D. Wing

Theses

Authentication is the secure network architecture mechanism by which a pair of suspicious principals communicating over presumably unsecure channels assure themselves that each is that whom it claims to be. The Xerox Network Systems architecture proposes one such authentication scheme. This thesis examines the system consequences of the XNS model's unique proxy variant, by which a principal may temporarily commission a second network entity to assume its identity as a means of authority transfer. Specific attendant system failure modes are highlighted. The student's associated original contributions include proposed model revisions which rectify authentication shortfalls yet facilitate the temporal authority transfer …

Parallelism In Declarative Languages, Catherine Eleftherios Chronaki Jan 1990

Parallelism In Declarative Languages, Catherine Eleftherios Chronaki

Theses

Imperative programming languages were initially built for uniprocessor systems that evolved out of the Von Neumann machine model. This model of storage oriented computation blocks parallelism and increases the cost of parallel program development and porting. Declarative languages based on mathematical models of computation, seem more suitable for the development of parallel programs. In the first part of this thesis we examine different language families under the declarative paradigm: functional, logic, and constraint languages. Functional languages are based on the abstract model of functions and (lamda)-calculus. They were initially developed for symbolic computation, but today they are commonly used in …

Expert Systems In Typography, David B. Fisher

Theses

Electronic publishing systems are providing authors with a tremendous amount of power formerly only available to printers: the choice of typographic design and layout. However, many authors use this power without the proper background, with potentially disastrous results. We have developed a prototype expert system that provides users of electronic publishing systems with the printer's knowledge in computer form in one narrow area of the publishing field to aid them in preparing their publications.

Efficient Geographic Information Systems: Data Structures, Boolean Operations And Concurrency Control, James Sheng Min Jan 1990

Efficient Geographic Information Systems: Data Structures, Boolean Operations And Concurrency Control, James Sheng Min

Theses

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are crucial to the ability of govern mental agencies and business to record, manage and analyze geographic data efficiently. They provide methods of analysis and simulation on geographic data that were previously infeasible using traditional hardcopy maps. Creation of realistic 3-D sceneries by overlaying satellite imagery over digital elevation models (DEM) was not possible using paper maps. Determination of suitable areas for construction that would have the fewest environmental impacts once required manual tracing of different map sets on mylar sheets; now it can be done in real time by GIS. Geographic information processing has significant …

Exploiting Implicit Parallelism In Sparc Instruction Execution, Todd Michael Austin Jan 1990

Exploiting Implicit Parallelism In Sparc Instruction Execution, Todd Michael Austin

Theses

One way to increase the performance of a processing unit is to exploit implicit parallelism. Exploiting this parallelism requires a processor to dynamically select instructions in a serial instruction stream which can be executed in parallel. As operations are computed concurrently, an execution speedup will occur. This thesis studies how effectively implicit parallelism could be exploited in the Scalable Pro cessor Architecture (SPARC)[9], a reduced instruction set architecture developed by Sun Microsystems. First an analysis of SPARC instruction traces will determine the optimal speedup that would be realized by a processor with infinite resources. Next, an analytical model of a …
