An Analytical Model For The Colorimetric Characterization Of Color Crts, Ricardo J. Motta
An Analytical Model For The Colorimetric Characterization Of Color Crts, Ricardo J. Motta
Theses
To be a viable instrument for color appearance research, the color Cathode Ray Tube has to be very well calibrated and characterized. The purpose of this research was to develop the techniques and methods used to carry out such characterization, and also to evaluate to what degree of precision and accuracy can such a characterization be performed. A new model for predicting the CRT behavior is presented along with the experimental results that validate it.
Quadtree Algorithms For Image Processing, Jim Benjamin Isaac
Quadtree Algorithms For Image Processing, Jim Benjamin Isaac
Theses
The issue of constructing a computer-searchable image encoding algorithm for complex images and the effect of this encoded image on algorithms for image processing are considered. A regular decomposition of image (picture) area into successively smaller bounded homogeneous quadrants is defined. This hierarchical search is logarithmic, and the resulting picture representation is shown to enable rapid access of the image data to facilitate geometric image processing applications (i.e. scaling, rotation), and efficient storage. The approach is known as quadtree (Q-Tree) encoding. The applications in this thesis are primarily to grayscale pixel images as opposed to simple binary images.

Establishing A Bipolar Fabrication Service For Analog Circuit Realization At The Rochester Institute Of Technology, Andrew La Pietra
Establishing A Bipolar Fabrication Service For Analog Circuit Realization At The Rochester Institute Of Technology, Andrew La Pietra
Theses
A bipolar fabrication service has been developed at the Rochester Institute of Technology to service students and faculty from the Microelectronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering departments wanting to realize designed integrated circuits. The fabrication technique combined Implanted N-Well and double diffusion processes. Phosphorous was implanted into a p-type substrate, oxidized for eight hours and diffused in nitrogen for another 40 hours to create isolated n-wells. Devices were then fabricated using a double diffusion process. The CAD tool used for the service is the Integrated Circuit Editor, ICE, which has campus wide accessibility through the RIT VAX system. Designed standard cells …
Analysis Of Random Halftone Dithering Using Second Order Statistics, Eran Steinberg
Analysis Of Random Halftone Dithering Using Second Order Statistics, Eran Steinberg
Theses
An analytical approach is proposed to explain the appearance of unwanted low frequency artifacts during the random dithering halftoning process. The solution uses a theorem which relates the correlation of the input gray level (continuous) signal to the correlation of the output (halftone) binary signal. The numerical solution of the above relationship suggests that: 1. Introduction of low frequency artifacts is inevitable. 2. The effect is enhanced for mean gray levels farther from mid-gray. 3. High frequency information in the input signal is attenuated more than low frequency information.
Threshold Modulation In 1-D Error Diffusion, Katrien Daels
Threshold Modulation In 1-D Error Diffusion, Katrien Daels
Theses
Error diffusion (ED) is widely used in digital imaging as a binarization process which preserves fine detail and results in pleasant images. The process resembles the human visual system in that it exhibits an intrinsic edge enhancement An additional extrinsic edge enhancement can be controlled by varying the threshold. None of these characteristics has yet been fully explained due to the lack of a suitable mathematical model of the algorithm. The extrinsic sharpening introduced in 1-D error diffusion is the subject of this thesis. An available pulse density modulation(PDM) model generated from a frequency modulation is used to gain a …
Simulation Of An Electrophotographic Halftone Reproduction, Alfonse Nazzaro
Simulation Of An Electrophotographic Halftone Reproduction, Alfonse Nazzaro
Theses
The robustness of three digital halftoning techniques are simulated for a hypothetical electrophotographic laser printer subjected to dynamic environmental conditions over a copy run of one thousand images. Mathematical electrophotographic models have primarily concentrated on solid area reproductions under time-invariant conditions. The models used in this study predict the behavior of complex image distributions at various stages in the electrophotographic process. The system model is divided into seven subsystems: Halftoning, Laser Exposure, Photoconductor Discharge, Toner Development, Transfer, Fusing, and Image Display. Spread functions associated with laser spot intensity, charge migration, and toner transfer and fusing are used to predict the …
A Study On Mentorship Within The Appraisal Profession, Kenneth M. Jenkins
A Study On Mentorship Within The Appraisal Profession, Kenneth M. Jenkins
Theses
The purpose of the study of mentorship within the appraisal profession is to determine the extent and perceived value of any existing mentorship within the profession in the Northern Virginia area. Employees indicate that of those persons having mentors, they advance professionally and monetarily more rapidly than those employees who don't have mentors. The employees who have no mentors indicate that the system is unfair, in that, the mentored employees are better "taken care of" when it comes to promotions, project selection, and training.
The literature bears out the employee comments . Many articles have been written extolling the virtues …
Negative Feedback Control Of The Visual System And Systematic Color Vision Model, Yan Liu
Negative Feedback Control Of The Visual System And Systematic Color Vision Model, Yan Liu
Theses
This thesis presents a physiological hypothesis of a systematic negative feedback control mechanism of the human visual system and a corresponding systematic color vision model. This model is based on the physiological hypothesis of systematic negative-feedback control of the visual system and both the stage color vision theory and Land's theory. According to this systematic color vision model, the color vision is processed as described by the stage theory, the negative feedback of the visual system adjusts the sensitivities of the cone photoreceptors and controls the visual system to adapt to the visual surroundings . The dynamic ranges of relative …
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Studies Of The Behavior Of Fluids In Gelatin And Other Porous Materials, Brian J. Antalek
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Studies Of The Behavior Of Fluids In Gelatin And Other Porous Materials, Brian J. Antalek
Theses
An application of magnetic resonance imaging to the study of the diffusion of water in gelatin and other materials is described. Gelatin was studied in great detail while plaster, balsa wood, and cement were studied to a lesser degree. Images of the materials at various stages of the diffusion process were recorded and analyzed. In order to properly interpret the imaging signal, the relationships between two intrinsic system parameters, Ti and T2, with the experimental parameters of the study need to be established. In the case of gelatin studies, Ti and T2 times were measured for gelatin samples varying in …
Electron-Bean Biased Reactive Evaporation Of Silicon, Silicon Oxides, And Silicon Nitrides, Jen-Yu Yeh
Electron-Bean Biased Reactive Evaporation Of Silicon, Silicon Oxides, And Silicon Nitrides, Jen-Yu Yeh
Theses
Silicon and silicon related films were deposited onto glass slides and silicon wafers by electron-beam evaporation of silicon in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres. An ionizer consisting of a heated tungsten wire biased with a negative voltage enhanced the opportunity of reactive deposition. Substrate temperature, chamber pressure, deposition rate, and biasing voltage were the controlled variables. The film reactive indices were measured using spectro-photometry and ellipsometry to examine the effects of these four variables. The refractive index obtained from silicon films is 4.18-4.42 and the refractive indices for silicon oxides range from 1.57 to 3.93. No evidence of silicon nitride formation …
N-Cross Coupled Phase Locked Loops, Joseph C. Aboukhalil
N-Cross Coupled Phase Locked Loops, Joseph C. Aboukhalil
Theses
Interference cancelation has been mainly performed using arrays, in an important issue in communication both array and spatial cancelation and time domain approach were used. In array applications, depth of cancelation may dependent on the interferences to background power ratio and their spatial distributions. Also, array cancelers are inadequate when the signals are less than an array beamwidth apart. The latter was dealt with using supperesolution and eigenanalysis methods. Different time domain methods were used in the past. Among them what is termed Cross-Coupled PEL. It is an arrangement of two PLL each one is locked on and tracking one …
A Study Of Biological Dentrification Of Munition Wastes, Sonia R. Venugopal
A Study Of Biological Dentrification Of Munition Wastes, Sonia R. Venugopal
Theses
Kinetics of denitrification were studied using a consortium from the Lawrence, Kansas municipal treatment plant. Experiments were conducted in the batch mode, under controlled oxygen and pH conditions. It was found that the Monod model can successfully perdict the experimental results of nitrate depletion. It was also found that when the pH is maintained at values between 7.0 and 8.5, nitrate can be treated in a batch mode without having any significant nitrite presence in the reactor. The experimentally determined kinetic parameters were used in preliminary calculations for sizing a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). An existing mathematical model for the …
Investigations Of Substitution Of Bi And Tl For Rare Earth Elements In Superconducting Rba2cu3oy, Jian Tang
Investigations Of Substitution Of Bi And Tl For Rare Earth Elements In Superconducting Rba2cu3oy, Jian Tang
Theses
Substitution of some other elements for rare earth or yttrium in high-Tc superconducting RBa2Cu3Oy compounds (R = Y, Nd, etc.) may improve chemical and physical properties of the materials, shed light on the superconducting mechanism of the new materials, and help to find new superconducting materials with even higher transition temperatures.
Bi3+ and Tl3+ have been reported earlier to result in higher Tc's in the related layer-structure compounds. The effect of electronegativity on superconductivity could be studied if substitution of Bi or Tl for Y or other rare earth elements …
Fault Tolerant Clos Network, Preet Mohan S. Ahluwalia
Fault Tolerant Clos Network, Preet Mohan S. Ahluwalia
Theses
Multistage interconnection networks, or MINs, provide paths between functional modules in multiprocessor systems. The MINs are usually segmented into several stages. Each stage connects inputs to appropriate links of the next stage so that the cumulative effect of all the stages satisfies input-output connection requirements.
This thesis deals with a fault tolerant Clos network. The fault tolerance technique involves addition of extra switches per stage to compensate for any switch failure The reliability analysis of both ordinary and fault tolerant Clos networks is presented. The optimal number of extra switches required to get the best reliability results has been analyzed.
Development Of Techniques Of Artificial Intelligence In Identifying The Different Machined Surfaces, Yi-Ching Chou
Development Of Techniques Of Artificial Intelligence In Identifying The Different Machined Surfaces, Yi-Ching Chou
Theses
This thesis deals with the identification of different machined surfaces with artificial inteligence techniques. There are five kinds of machining operations: grinding, turning, milling, EDM and waterjet which determine the characteristics of resulting surfaces. Topology of various specimens is measured using the surfanylizer. Twenty one parameters are extracted from the measurements to describe the characteristics. In this thesis, we develop neural and expert systems that recoginize and classify surfaces according to the machining methods.
Ct Fan Beam Reconstruction With A Non-Stationary Axis-Of-Rotation, Joseph A. Concepcion
Ct Fan Beam Reconstruction With A Non-Stationary Axis-Of-Rotation, Joseph A. Concepcion
Theses
One important aspect for reconstructing an image using Computed Tomography (CT) is that the axis-of-rotation must pivot at the same point on the reconstruction plane as the x-ray source and CT scanner assembly rotates around the imaged object. This pivot point is used as a reference point for backprojecting pixel values to their proper coordinates. Therefore, reconstructing an image with a non-stationary axis-of-rotation would backproject pixel values to wrong coordinate points, since the reference point is non-stationary for every projection angle.
A convolution filtered backprojection algorithm has been derived for correcting images that were acquired with a non-stationary axis-of-rotation using …
Tri-Color Led Display System Using Microcontroller, Costakis A. Constantinou
Tri-Color Led Display System Using Microcontroller, Costakis A. Constantinou
Theses
A seven-by-forty-eight tricolor LED display panel is designed and built around the 68HC11 MCU.
Four bilateral switching transistors (4066) are used in a Wien bridge configuration to drive each tri-color LED. With this circuitry one is able to drive the tricolor LED symmetrically. An alternative design that uses only two switching transistors is also offered.
A software program was developed to output on the display scrolling and fixed messages. Each message could be displayed in a different color (Red, Green and Yellow) and at a different speed (Slow, Fast, and Medium). The program also includes an editor with insertion and …
Multiple Expert System, Umesh Kumar Mittal
Multiple Expert System, Umesh Kumar Mittal
Theses
In many domains, for example medical diagnosis, there are several sources of knowledge, e.g., several domain experts. These domain experts may have disagreements over some issues in the domain. Research in the area of human decision making suggests that a human decision is not always made based on the advice of a single expert. Many current expert systems, however, expect consistency in their knowledge bases. An expert system does not deliberate by reasoning that "on one hand..." but "on the other hand..." The knowledge engineer, who is not necessarily an expert in the same domain, ensures consistency by eliminating all …
Comparative Study Of Prediction Gain Based On Neural Network Architecture, Prashant M. Shah
Comparative Study Of Prediction Gain Based On Neural Network Architecture, Prashant M. Shah
Theses
This thesis describes the Neural Network approach to design predictor using Delta and Generalized Delta Rule. The predictor is designed by supervised training based on the typical sequence of pixel values. Neural Network is used to find the coefficients of the predictor. Both 1-D and 2-D scheme of the pixels as well as linear and non-linear correlations are used to find the coefficients by training. Different combinations of pixels are used to find the "best" combination among the order of the predictor.
Novel Way Of Sub-Carrier Coherent Detection And Clock Recovery In Fiber-Optic Communications, Narayan Gehlot
Novel Way Of Sub-Carrier Coherent Detection And Clock Recovery In Fiber-Optic Communications, Narayan Gehlot
Theses
We experimentally demonstrate a novel concept for recovery of a Sub-Carrier and Timing Clock in fiber-optic communication systems using a Wavelength Division Multiplexing technique. The idea is to send a low radio frequency (RF) as a reference pilot from the transmitter to the receiver on a separate laser using the principle of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). This low frequency signal is taken to be a subharmonic of the subcarrier used to carry information and intensity modulate another laser. Such approach will be expected to generate at the receiver a local oscillator in high coherence with the subcarrier.
We show that …

Solid-Liquid Suspension In Agitated Vessels Provided With Multiple Impellers, Tong Li
Solid-Liquid Suspension In Agitated Vessels Provided With Multiple Impellers, Tong Li
Theses
A large number of references can be found in the literature on the effect of mixing parameters on the achievement of the minimum agitation speed to just suspend solid particles. In the vast majority of these studies the agitation system consisted of just one centrally mounted impeller. However, the determination of the minimum agitation speed to achieve the just suspended state when the additional impellers are used have received very little attention. It is the intent of this work to investigate the role of multiple impeller agitation system on the achievement of the complete particle suspension state. The effect of …
Coexistence Of Three Pure And Simple Competitors In Four Interconnected Bioreactors, Ming Wu
Coexistence Of Three Pure And Simple Competitors In Four Interconnected Bioreactors, Ming Wu
Theses
It is known that a homogeneous environment having invariant inputs cannot allow for steady state coexistence of any number of pure and simple competitors. However, it has been proven that two pure and simple competitors can coexist at a steady state in two interconnected chemostats, if the conditions are such that they allow a different species to grow faster in each one of the two vessels. It has been also shown that three pure and simple competitors cannot coexist in three interconnected chemostats, even if the conditions are such that a different population could grow faster (have the competitive advantage) …
Direct Schottky Injection Image Sensors, Subramanyam V. Ayyagari
Direct Schottky Injection Image Sensors, Subramanyam V. Ayyagari
Theses
This thesis describes the analysis and simulations of Direct Schottky Injection (DSI) imagers which have 100% fill factor. Frame transfer (FT) and interline transfer (IT) DSI imager structures have been investigated. Theoretical Poisson solution for the PT and P-NP FT-DSI structures is presented, which closely agrees with simulation results. Simulation for frame transfer FT-DSI imagers has been done in SUPREM III since 1-D effects are more dominant. Single carrier transit time for both the structures were estimated from the electric fields.
Simulations of IT-DSI structures was done using PISCES llb, to get the local electric fields, which define the directionality …
Multiresolution Techniques : Laplacian Pyramid Coding And Its Comparison With Subband Coding, Danmei Chang
Multiresolution Techniques : Laplacian Pyramid Coding And Its Comparison With Subband Coding, Danmei Chang
Theses
The multiresolution pyramid and related structures have been developed as intermediate representations between the purely frequency domain and purely spatial domain. In this thesis. we discuss two important pyramid structures which are often used in multiresolution representation: Laplacian pyramid and subband coding.
Laplacian pyramid. a typical pyramid structure, is studied in detail. By means of software implementation. we obtain a comprehensive understanding of its features and applications in image representation and data compression. Several modifications of pyramid structure are used to compress the data dynamic range, reduce the computational complexity and improve performance. Performance of the conventional Laplacian pyramid and …
Centrifugal Modeling Of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, Kuo-Neng George Chang
Centrifugal Modeling Of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, Kuo-Neng George Chang
Theses
There are between 2 to 3.5 million Underground Storage Tanks (UST) located through this nation. Most of these tanks store gasoline and fuel oil. Many tanks in fact are or will soon be leaking, thus making them one of the major sources of groundwater contamination in USA. The fate and transport of chemicals from the leaking USTs is estimated from mathematical models. A major difficulty in these modeling efforts has been a crucial lack of information concerning the constitutive relationships governing multiphase contaminant movement.
Centrifugal modeling is an alternative to mathematical modeling, which may give an insight to the problem …
Fast Packet Switching For B-Isdn With Neural Net Control, Ajit K. Chaudhuri
Fast Packet Switching For B-Isdn With Neural Net Control, Ajit K. Chaudhuri
Theses
The concept of integrated network where both the voice packet and data packet are delt with, started taking shape since 1970. Later, Users? demand for communication of data, voice, file, facsimile, image, videotext, videophone, videomovie has also been felt. All these services need bit rate of transmission in the order of 10, even 100 Mbits. An economical way to transmit this higher bit rate, with flexibility of bandwidth, is to treat voice/video in the form of packets and transmit those packets in real time. Studies of this kind of communication is carried out in Broadband ISDN ( BISDN). At this …
