High Precision Laser Radar Tracking Device, V. P. Raghavan May 1991

High Precision Laser Radar Tracking Device, V. P. Raghavan

Theses

This thesis explores a relatively new Solid Silver Thin Film Source technology, for the implementation of a novel High Precision Laser Radar Tracking device. The process which consists of a Ag+-Na+ ion exchange, is designed in two steps. It utilizes an initial electric field-aided ion exchange step for a predeposition, and a subsequent second diffusion step to force the profile latitude necessary for optimization of the device. While the entire project of implementing this device, consists of analyzing, processing, polishing and testing, this thesis covers only the process aspect in detail. The success achieved by obtaining the required Power Coupling …

Way To The Absolute, Gonca Ilbeyi May 1991

Way To The Absolute, Gonca Ilbeyi

Theses

Nowadays more and more people, especially who live in large cities, suffer from a terrible emptiness and boredom, as if they are waiting for something that never arrives. Within modern civilization, its people lose the meaning of their lives, values, and they find themselves in morally decayed. My main purpose, through the medium of art, is to express the complexities and paradoxes of human existence in modern industrial societies- not from a pessimistic, but a skeptical perspective. Alienation, depersonalization, loss of identity in this world by bureaucratic rules and regulations are central problems of all modern industrial societies. The rise …

Self Discovery And Personal Creation, Peggy Kehoe May 1991

Self Discovery And Personal Creation, Peggy Kehoe

Theses

My Thesis project is about self discovery and personal creation. I believe that contemplation and imagination are essential not only to the artist in creating his art, but to every man as he creates his life. I am interested in the primary purpose that art once had; the subtle magic that primitive artists invoked, hoping to protect, to change or to heal the inhabitants of earth. In my paintings, I want the inner world of the mind to marry reality, the two combining as powerful evocations of man's creative potential.

Information Retrieval, Paul Bartow May 1991

Information Retrieval, Paul Bartow

Theses

My time spent here at RIT has taken me many places within the understanding of art. I can honestly say the time was well worth it. I can't help but realize that an education is a wonderful thing and that having to pay for it is excluding many who could use it. I had no expectations coming to graduate school, which might have been a good thing. My main concern was to prepare myself for a life without school, where I could guide myself on my own thoughts and feel secure doing so. The work I've done here has gone …

Extension Of Evaluating The Operating Characteristics For Dependent Mixed Variables-Attributes Sampling Plans To Large First Sample Size, Min Tang May 1991

Extension Of Evaluating The Operating Characteristics For Dependent Mixed Variables-Attributes Sampling Plans To Large First Sample Size, Min Tang

Theses

In evaluation of the operating characteristics of mixed sampling plans (a known), the probability function, Fn(x) , of the difference between the extreme value and the mean is important. Because it is an n multiple integral where n is the first sample size of a mixed dependent sampling plan, the normal way of evaluating this probability is the recursive quadrature method. Using this method, as the first sample size increases, the amount of computation increases exponentially, so that this probability function becomes a bottleneck in computation. This thesis presents a Taylor-expansion method for handling the probability function for large first …

Contemporary Truths Through Creation-Centered Mythology A Visual Through Process, Ann Therese Kelly May 1991

Contemporary Truths Through Creation-Centered Mythology A Visual Through Process, Ann Therese Kelly

Theses

The experience of this year of study is an important aspect in the development of this body of work because it is very much in the present. The pressure of time, limited studio space and intense sharing with other artists (which is a luxury for me) has helped my work to evolve and become strong. I also learned to rely heavily on an intuitive process of thinking and working rather than a left-brained approach to ideas. As a religious person I have often come to crossroads in my career as an artist. I believe I have found a personal style …

A Study Of The Effect Of Lithographic Press Speed On Dot Gain, James B. Mudge May 1991

A Study Of The Effect Of Lithographic Press Speed On Dot Gain, James B. Mudge

Theses

Dot gain is the increase in size of a halftone dot or array of dots that takes place in the stages of reproduction of an image from original film to printing on a substrate. Uncontrolled dot gain is a source of multiple print quality problems including color variation, loss of detail and high waste factors during printing. Several factors have been identified as causes of dot gain. One factor that had not been investigated was the effect of press operating speed on dot gain. The purpose of this investigation is to study the effect that press speed has on dot …

The Effects Of Blanket Tension And Squeeze Pressure On Slur And Doubling Using Conventional And Compressable Blankets In Sheetfed Offset Lithography, Alexander M. Voutsas May 1991

The Effects Of Blanket Tension And Squeeze Pressure On Slur And Doubling Using Conventional And Compressable Blankets In Sheetfed Offset Lithography, Alexander M. Voutsas

Theses

Dot gain is a printing characteristic which has an effect on printing quality, if it is not controlled. It refers to the physical increase in size for a printed dot during the transfer process between the film and the printed sheet. The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether varying squeeze pressure and blanket tension settings significantly affected directional dot gain (slur and doubling), therefore printing quality, using conventional and compressible types of offset lithographic blankets. The experiment was performed on the second unit of a two-color Heidelberg MOZP sheetfed offset lithographic press, bypassing the first unit. Directional dot …

A Study Of Mechanical Dot Gain For Different Dot Shapes Based On The Border Zone Thoery, Kuang-Hua Sun May 1991

A Study Of Mechanical Dot Gain For Different Dot Shapes Based On The Border Zone Thoery, Kuang-Hua Sun

Theses

Mathematical equations have been derived to calculate the relationship of the dot area and the radius or diameter of a halftone dot . Dot gain is directly associated with the perimeter and the shape of a halftone dot. It is important to study the relationship between dot gain and dot shape, and to understand how each affects the printing result . The border zone theory explains that when dot gain occurs, the width of the border zone around the dot is constant and is independent of the dot shape and dot area. Four halftone gray scales with different dot shapes …

Valuation Of Historic American Picture Frames, 1650-1930, Virginia V. Van Rees May 1991

Valuation Of Historic American Picture Frames, 1650-1930, Virginia V. Van Rees

Theses

This study presents a systematic framework for the identification, classification, and valuation of historic American picture frames produced between 1650 and 1930. Traditionally, frames have been overlooked in art historical research, often treated as peripheral to the artworks they surround. However, frames provide critical insights into aesthetic trends, craftsmanship, and cultural values across multiple centuries of American decorative arts. The author outlines a methodology for assessing frame styles, construction techniques, and ornamentation in order to establish reliable standards for appraisal and cataloging.

The work traces the evolution of American frames from colonial adaptations of European models to the richly ornamented …

Pixel Classification By Morphological Granulometric Features, John T. Newell May 1991

Pixel Classification By Morphological Granulometric Features, John T. Newell

Theses

Pixel classification systems rely on a certain set of features that are sufficient to classify a given pixel into a class defined within a database. Unlike brightness and spectral signature features commonly used in remote sensing applications, texture-based features cannot be defined for a single pixel and must be derived from an area or window surrounding that pixel. In this research, all features are derived from binary morphological granulometries. Once generated, these features comprise a database which can be used to classify images. A Gaussian Maximum Likelihood Classifier is trained with this data base for subsequent classification of both dependent …

Symbols And Colors, Linda Eileen Thias May 1991

Symbols And Colors, Linda Eileen Thias

Theses

This thesis explores the creative process and thematic focus in the studio artwork of Linda Eileen Thias, with particular attention to the recurring motifs of orchids and fish. These natural forms serve as both visual inspiration and symbolic anchors in her artistic practice, reflecting her fascination with the elegance of organic design and its capacity for abstraction. The study examines how Thias interprets and reimagines these motifs through multiple mediums, including painting, ceramics, and fabric-based work, thereby creating a body of art that is both unified in theme and diverse in execution.

A key aspect of her process involves the …

Evaluation Of Lowtran And Modtran For Use Over High Zenith Angle/Long Path Length Viewing, Jonathan Wright May 1991

Evaluation Of Lowtran And Modtran For Use Over High Zenith Angle/Long Path Length Viewing, Jonathan Wright

Theses

LOWTRAN and MODTRAN were evaluated in the 2.0-5.5 micron region against field collection data at high zenith angle/long path lengths to determine the degree of uncertainty associated with these models under these conditions. Matching data sets were developed using data from the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Flying Infrared Signatures Technology Aircraft (FISTA) as the field reference. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied to determine the degree to which the outputs of LOWTRAN and MODTRAN follow the same distribution as the field data. The percent difference between the model and field data was also studied. Agreement between the model and field data …

Image Quality Metrics For Visual Optical Instruments, Hongping Zhang May 1991

Image Quality Metrics For Visual Optical Instruments, Hongping Zhang

Theses

The effect of coma and astigmatism on subjective quality of image of sinusoidal and square-bar targets is simulated by using digital processing system. A suprathreshold method is employed in psychophysical discrimination experiments. We determine the robustness of some image quality metrics that can be employed during automated production of visual instruments by examining the correlation between subjective results and objective measures. These include the variance of the wavefront aberration, the Strehl ratio, the radius of 84% encircled energy of the point spread function (R84), the modulation transfer function (MTF) and the integral of the MTF across the frequency range of …

Frequency Modulated Pulse For Ultrasonic B-Scan Imaging In Attenuating Medium, Sumat Mehra May 1991

Frequency Modulated Pulse For Ultrasonic B-Scan Imaging In Attenuating Medium, Sumat Mehra

Theses

A rigorous study of a new technique for Ultrasonic B-Scan imaging was performed. This technique made use of a Frequency Modulated (FM) pulse as opposed to the conventional Short pulse for imaging. The simulation studies offered sufficient support for this method, which was then implemented in the laboratory. Experiments were performed on phantoms which mimicked the attenuating medium. Due to the more flexible nature of this FM pulse, changes in the point spread function were studied as a function of bandwidth and depth of the scatterer. The backscattered signal was digitized post processed, and then displayed as a gray-scale B-scan …

Analysis Of Thermal Effects Produced By Incident Laser Radiation On A Structure, Frederick C. Debolt May 1991

Analysis Of Thermal Effects Produced By Incident Laser Radiation On A Structure, Frederick C. Debolt

Theses

This paper is an attempt to understand and define the thermal effects of incident laser radiation on a semi-infinite body. Based on previous research into the subject as well as other research into laser technologies certain assumptions are utilized to facilitate achieving usable solutions. The incident radiation is modeled as a set of independent functions of space and time in cylindrical coordinates. By using the Separation of Variables technique in conjunction with Green's Function a numerical solution to the temperature field induced by the radiation is found. The equations developed while solving the heat conduction problem are then utilized in …

Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Chemical Fixation Of Insoluble Non-Volatile, Chemically Non-Reactive Organics In Soil, Naihong Zhu Apr 1991

Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Chemical Fixation Of Insoluble Non-Volatile, Chemically Non-Reactive Organics In Soil, Naihong Zhu

Theses

Microwave treatment of hazardous wastes like dioxin-contaminated soil potentially fills a great need for a remediation technology which potentially can be applied in-situ: the EPA has concluded from a risk assessment study that it is the excavation and transportation of such wastes that poses the greatest risk. Studies have been carried out on a surrogate for dioxin, namely, 9,10-anthraquinone because it has similar chemical and physical properties but it is not toxic. It was found in microwave treatment studies that, at temperatures attainable in-situ, anthraquinone became non-extractable. A model was proposed which postulated that as water was removed from soil …

Adhesion Of Sputtered Copper To Plasma-Treated Polyimide Substrates, Jong-Bong Ma Apr 1991

Adhesion Of Sputtered Copper To Plasma-Treated Polyimide Substrates, Jong-Bong Ma

Theses

We have studied the adhesion of a sputtered copper film (thickness 5000 Angstroms) to flexible polyimide substrates between 1 mil and 5 mil thick. The polyimide types include Kapton (based on the monomers of pyromellitic dianhydride and oxydialine, i.e., PMDA-ODA) and Upilex (based on the bi-phenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride monomer). (A. S. Wood, 1988) For each of these polyimides, a clear difference in adhesion is observed when the polymer surface has been treated with a simple AC nitrogen glow discharge. We used a tape test to estimate the strength of the adhesion bond. The difference in adhesion only becomes apparent after …
