Efficient Hypercube Communications, Shreyas R. Bhatt Jan 1992

Efficient Hypercube Communications, Shreyas R. Bhatt

Theses

Hypercube algorithms may be developed for a variety of communication-intensive tasks such as sending a message from one node to another, broadcasting a message from one node to all others, broadcasting a message from each node to all others, all-to-all personalized communication, one-to-all personalized communication, and exchanging messages between nodes via fixed permutations. All these communication patterns are special cases of many-to-many personalized communication. The problem of many-to-many personalized communication is investigated here.

Two routing algorithms for many-to-many personalized communication are presented here. The algorithms proposed yield very high performance with respect to the number of time steps and packet …

A Machine Entity For A Coordinate Measurement Machine : The Generic Workcell Project, Richard C. Meyer

Theses

The Center for Manufacturing Systems (CMS) department at New Jersey Institute of Technology and Siemens Corporate Research located in Princeton have agreed to jointly implement a research project in generic workcell control architectures. This paper discusses the module, called a Machine Entity, developed by the author that interfaces the Brown & Sharpe Coordinate Measurement Machine located on the CMS factory floor with the cell control software. The module has been designed in such a manner to simplify the development of future Machine Entities, thereby reducing the time required to integrate the CMS factory floor.

Biodegradation Of Phenol And Benzoic Acid In Batch And Sequencing Batch Reactors, Stephane Reynaud Jan 1992

Biodegradation Of Phenol And Benzoic Acid In Batch And Sequencing Batch Reactors, Stephane Reynaud

Theses

A pure culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( ATCC 10145 ) was used for the biodegradation of phenol and benzoic acid. Two sets of small scale (shaker flask) experiments were originally performed: in the first set, phenol was the only carbon source present while in the second, benzoic acid was the sole carbon source. These experiments revealed the kinetics of benzoic acid degradation (they were found to be described by a Monod, non-inhibitory model), as well as of phenol biodegradation (they were found to be described by Andrews'inhibitory model) by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The kinetic expressions from the small scale experiments …

An Investigation Of Inking Adjustments Versus Their Response Time In A Web Offset Press, Shiuh-Dong Chung Jan 1992

An Investigation Of Inking Adjustments Versus Their Response Time In A Web Offset Press, Shiuh-Dong Chung

Theses

This study discusses the response time of different inking changes. In press control, when the pressman notices a color variation on the press sheet, he/she needs to adjust the ink keys to bring the color back to the color on the OK sheet . The change of the ink level needs a particular time interval to reach a new equilibrium. When a process reaches a new press equilibrium, it reflects the ink change factor. This study investigates the time interval by applying two amounts of inking change and two kinds of measurement by X-Bar R chart analysis. The response times …

Domestic Hub Airfares: An Analysis Of Domestic U.S. Passanger Airline Fares From The Consumer's Perspective, Robert I. Ward

Theses

Deregulation of the U.S. passenger airline industry has resulted in a few large carriers that have been successful in dominating the market, including dominance of selected routes originating from, or traveling through, key airports that have been designated as hubs. This investigation researched the simplified industry fares that were in place in the summer of 1992 and found that airfares for certain sub categories of industry routings were consistently above average industry fares. The implications of these findings are reducible to simple measures that are meaningful to the flying public.

The Early Days Of Hotel Sales: A Historical Look At The Development And Growth Of Hotel Business Promotion, David C. Dorf

Theses

The art and science of business promotion (later called sales promotion - and in contemporary usage, now a component of marketing) is comparatively new to the lodging industry, as far as being a formalized and accepted management discipline. The processes of attracting business to a particular establishment is as old as the industry; but until the middle of this century, they were generally looked down upon by most of the industry and in most cases were not considered key functions by those responsible for the operations of their properties. And other industries similarly looked at hotel sales promotion as a …

Build It And They Will Come, Charles Edward Simon Jan 1992

Build It And They Will Come, Charles Edward Simon

Theses

The main thrust of this study was to decide if certain strategies exist that have significant impact on profit in a lodging establishment. In reviewing the literature it did not contain any conceptual plan for operating a lodging facility completely. However, as noted in the literature review, there are many articles discussing one strategy or another. It is pointed out in chapter two that most of these strategies are more correct by definition "tactics." Tactics that if implemented may contribute to success, but not be solely responsible for success. This study also attempted to identify some differences between the service …

Detection And Estimation Of Outliers In Low-Resolution Saturated Factorial Experiments, George F. Cretekos

Theses

The detection and estimation of outliers in a saturated factorial experimental setting is researched and discussed. Methods for detection and estimation are developed and tested in both simulated and "real" data sets. The techniques developed proved themselves useful in both detection and estimation of outlying values. The simulated data sets also showed how an outlier can affect the interpretation of an experiment depending on the number and sizes of active effects and on the amount the outlying value is actually shifted.
