Dynamic Analysis Of An Electromagnetic Shutter System, Peter Newman Feb 1992

Dynamic Analysis Of An Electromagnetic Shutter System, Peter Newman

Theses

This report presents a method of analysis that may be applied to dynamical systems operating in electromagnetic fields. The investigation focuses in particular on the dynamic response of an electromagnetic shutter system. A derivation of Finite Element Analysis applied to magnetostatics is reviewed. An introduction to photographic exposure calculations is also reviewed. The shutter system is broken down into three models for analysis: a magnetic model, a mechanical model, and a photometric model. The equations of motion are derived, based on the electromagnetic field calculations. The governing equations are analyzed using the Advanced Continuous Simulation Language (ACSL) software, and the …

A Study Investigating The Impact Women Have On The Bindery, Melanie Lee Feb 1992

A Study Investigating The Impact Women Have On The Bindery, Melanie Lee

Theses

The evolution of women from working mainly in the household to the work place began out of an economic need on the United States' part. With the westward expansion of the country and the Civil War during the nineteenth century, there was a shortage of male labor and women were hired as unskilled workers, at first, to keep the economic growth pace of the country in line with its physical expansion. Women became the predominant labor force in industries such as tobacco, textiles and bookbinding. As book manufacturing grew to provide books for the mass population, women were the manual …

The Design And Construction Of A Hang Glider Flight Simulator, Kim L. Sherman Feb 1992

The Design And Construction Of A Hang Glider Flight Simulator, Kim L. Sherman

Theses

Hang gliding is probably the closest a person can come to experiencing bird-like flight. Unfortunately, the precise skills needed to fly a hang glider are difficult to teach through demonstration or verbal instruction. Consequently, many people's first few flights are awkward and sometimes dangerous. A hang gliding student's first flight is a solo flight, so control errors are understandable. However, every effort must be made to minimize these errors.

A Comparison Between The Staggered Position One-Angle Screening Method And The Multi-Angle Screening Method In Terms Of Misregistration When Printing Process Color On Newsprint, Ivan M. Latanision Feb 1992

A Comparison Between The Staggered Position One-Angle Screening Method And The Multi-Angle Screening Method In Terms Of Misregistration When Printing Process Color On Newsprint, Ivan M. Latanision

Theses

The multi-angle screening configuration is by far the most widely used screening configuration for process color printing, but there are alternative screening configurations which may be preferable in certain situations. Color separations made using the Staggered Position One-Angle screening configuration are reported to provide printed reproductions on newsprint which appear sharper, offer improved color reproduction, produce smoother color reproduction, and preserve color better in the shadows. The staggered position technique can be generated with high-end scanners and prepress equipment, as well as with desktop publishing workstations using the "Flamenco" screening algorithm. However, the staggered position method may be subject to …

Validation Of Dirsig, An Infrared Synthetic Scene Generation Model, Donna D. Rankin Feb 1992

Validation Of Dirsig, An Infrared Synthetic Scene Generation Model, Donna D. Rankin

Theses

A validation and sensitivity study was performed in which the accuracy of an infrared synthetic image generation model (DIRSIG) was examined. The majority of the error in the model is derived from two major programs: a temperature predictor and a radiative transfer model. A thermodynamic model computes kinetic temperatures of objects in a computer generated three-dimensional scene. These temperatures, atmospheric data, and sensor parameters are used as input to a ray_tracer which models the propagation of radiation in a source-target-sensor path within this scene. The output is a simulated infrared image which a sensor with the given input parameters would …

The Rit Ieee-488 Buffer Design, John Connor Feb 1992

The Rit Ieee-488 Buffer Design, John Connor

Theses

This document describes the design of an NMOS ASIC used to control an RIT IEEE-488 Buffer previously designed by the author. Past designs used discrete components to implement an asynchronous controller and a synchronous, one-hot controller. The present design utilizes a multiple controller architecture incorporated within the ASIC. The ASIC is used to control bus protocol, bus transceivers, and memory. At power-up, the buffer configures itself as an active listener on the bus and waits for a talker to initiate communication. The buffer accepts a data file (a plot file for example) from the talker, then takes control of the …

Achromatic Perception In Color Image Displays, Mark E. Gorzynski Feb 1992

Achromatic Perception In Color Image Displays, Mark E. Gorzynski

Theses

The perception of achromatic colors is an important aspect of CRT color appearance. Achromatic colors are important for practical reasons such as image color balance and as fundamental components of chromatic adaptation and color constancy research. Data on achromatic colors is absolutely essential for applying CIE colorimetry to CRT-hardcopy matching. For example, the CIELAB formulas require the specification of the tristimulus values of white. Unfortunately, psychophysical data on the perception of achromatic colors, including white, in CRT-hardcopy matching situations is not readily available in the literature. The purpose of this research was to investigate factors that affect the perception of …

Vibration Analysis Of A Thin Moving Web And Its Finite Element Implementation, Gavin Chunye Liu Feb 1992

Vibration Analysis Of A Thin Moving Web And Its Finite Element Implementation, Gavin Chunye Liu

Theses

Equations of motion (lateral and axial) of an axially moving web are developed based on the Newton's Second Law and the Euler-Bernoulli thin beam theory- The equations of motion in the axial direction are solved by using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta Method. The fourth-order, partial differential equation for the lateral motion is solved using Galerkin's finite element method and the Three-point Recurrence Scheme. Effects of the flexibility of the end-supports, the weight of the web, the axial web speeds, the eccentricities of the rollers, and the applied torque to the web-roller system are studied.

I. Removal Of Chromium From A Highly Contaminated Soil/Slag Matrix By Soil Washing At Low Ph, Ii. Removal Of Chromium From Impregnated Clay Matrices By Soil Washing At Low Ph, Erez Gotlieb

Theses

Section I. Chromium is a major soil contaminant of industrial sites in New Jersey, as well as in many of the Superfund sites throughout the United States. Removal of chromium by soil/slag washing with low pH sulfuric acid solutions is described. The extraction parameters are acid concentration, contact time, temperature, solvent/soil ratio, and acid type. The effect of two-stage extraction is discussed.

Soil/slag washing with sulfuric acid concentrations of 2% weight:volume (units are g/ml. This concentration is approximately equal to 0.4 N) at 75:1 v:w solvent/soil ratios yielded chromium extraction efficiencies of 95%, but 50% of the soil matrix was …

Series Compensation Investigation On The Hydro-Quebec And Nypa 765 Kv Transmission System : Modeling And Stability Analysis, Hans J. Candia

Theses

This thesis presents a mathematical approach for raising the power steady state stability limit by adding series capacitive compensation to a transmission line. The effect of series capacitive compensation and degree of compensation were investigated in detail. The power system studied includes an automatically controlled power system, IEEE Type I.

The results of the actual and theoretical steady state stability limits for a given series capacitance location and degree of compensation were obtained by applying the frequency domain technique. The natural frequencies of each compensated power network were examined.

The best location for series capacitive compensation is proposed which is …

Mathematic Models On Leaching Behavior Of Chemical Solidification And Stabilization Process For Heavy Metal Sludges, Sz-Hung Chen Jan 1992

Mathematic Models On Leaching Behavior Of Chemical Solidification And Stabilization Process For Heavy Metal Sludges, Sz-Hung Chen

Theses

Chemical Solidification and Stabilization of toxic metal-containing sludges is one of the most important problems for environmental protection. Although Chemical Solidification and Stabilization of hazardous wastes prior to disposal is increasing in importance, very little work has been done concerning the leaching mechanisms and kinetic models.

In this study, we apply Freundlich & Langmuir isotherms on Chemical Solidification and Stabilization process, and the theoretical results match with experimental data very well. In the same time, we develop a simple methematical kinetic model which relates leaching concentration of heavy metal to curing time. In this study kinetic model, what you need …

Real-Tv : Rtp/L3'S Visual Monitor, Richard Czop Jan 1992

Real-Tv : Rtp/L3'S Visual Monitor, Richard Czop

Theses

Today many real-world activities are being monitored and controlled by some type of micro-processor based system. Emphasis is placed on manufacturing and controlling through the use of computers. The inherent nature of these real-world applications makes them difficult to control and monitor. They must be built meeting strict timing constraints and must be predictable. We need to develop simplistic, reliable, and cost effective methods for building, evaluating, monitoring and controlling these complex systems. These tools should provide the user with system insight. At the New Jersey Institute of Technology Real-Time Computing Laboratory, we are building a system that will provide …

Ion Exchanged Glass Waveguides With Efficient Coupling To Fibers And Lasers, Shiqing Hu Jan 1992

Ion Exchanged Glass Waveguides With Efficient Coupling To Fibers And Lasers, Shiqing Hu

Theses

To be of practical use in optical communications networks, optical components must have both low on-chip losses and efficient coupling to fibers, semiconductor lasers and detectors. In this thesis work two types of channel waveguides were designed and fabricated on BK7 glass substrate using a low-cost ion-exchange process. The first type of waveguide was formed in a simple sequence of ion-exchange and post-exchange annealing. These single mode waveguides had large mode size and were efficiently coupled to single mode fibers. The lowest loss achieved in fiber-guide direct coupling was 1.25 dB. The second type of waveguide was formed in a …

Searching For Orthogonal States Of Neural Networks, Heng Wang Jan 1992

Searching For Orthogonal States Of Neural Networks, Heng Wang

Theses

Two approaches to find orthogonal states of neural network are presented in the paper. The first approach is a recursive one, it builds N orthogonal vectors based on N /2 orthogonal vectors. The second approach is a formula approach, in which orthogonal vectors can be obtained using a formula. Using these approaches, orthogonal states of neural network are found. Some properties of the neural network built on these orthogonal vectors are presented in Appendix A and some examples are given in Appendix B.

A Knowledge-Based Design System For A Housing Project For Altzheimer's [Sic] Disease Patients And Their Caregivers, Karin S. Bannier

Theses

Since the beginning of the 20th century, architecture went through several different developments. Throughout these developments a large number of movements and design models Emerged, based on different design knowledge. The motivation for design projects is related Mainly to historical, functional, or site related issues. Today's changes in social relationships and therefore living arrangements question the validity of existing traditional design solutions, especially in the case of disabled clients. A new or modified specific design knowledge base has to be considered in order to meet the specific client's needs. To satisfy the wide range of changing nontraditional criteria that face …

Dynamic Machine Scheduling, Expansion, And Control Of A Generic Workcell, Peter A. Murray Jan 1992

Dynamic Machine Scheduling, Expansion, And Control Of A Generic Workcell, Peter A. Murray

Theses

Factory automation has come a long way since the invention of the automatic flour mill. A workcell is a group of machines (robots) working together to produce a product. In the past workcells have been hard wired using methods such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). To change a part of this system would require reprogramming the entire system.

The Generic Work Cell (GWC) is a dynamic architecture which allows a workcell to be modified on the fly. The architecture enables the generation of new cells with minimal effort, and the modification of the system without reprogramming the entire system. The …

Selective No Absorption From Gas Streams With Tertiary Organic Hydroperoxide Solutions, Huihong Ao Jan 1992

Selective No Absorption From Gas Streams With Tertiary Organic Hydroperoxide Solutions, Huihong Ao

Theses

The selective removal of nitric oxide from gas streams was investigated using 3,6-dimethyl-3-octyl hydroperoxide, p-menthane hydroperoxide, pinane hydroperoxide, and cumene hydroperoxide in solutions of n-hexadecane (cetane). The influence of different parameters such as temperature, gas stream flow rate (or residence time), and concentration of hydroperoxide compounds on efficiency of NO removal was evaluated. The basis of this research was to duplicate atmospheric reactions between hydroperoxides and NO in order to produce NO2. We succeeded in removing NO from gas streams, but failed to produce NO2. NO reacted with the hydroperoxides to produce nitrates. These nitrates are …

Kinetics Of Phenol Biodegradation By Pseudomonas Resinovorans (Atcc 14235), Susmita Guptapal Jan 1992

Kinetics Of Phenol Biodegradation By Pseudomonas Resinovorans (Atcc 14235), Susmita Guptapal

Theses

The kinetics of phenol biodegradation were studied by using a pure culture of Pseudomonas resinovorans (ATCC 14235). Experiments were performed in shaker flasks and samples were analyzed for biomass content (based on optical density), and for phenol concentrations (based on HPLC measurements). The experimental data indicated that phenol is an inhibitory substrate at high concentrations. Specific growth rate data were fitted to an Andrews' expression with good success. The regressed kinetic constants were also used in predicting phenol biodegradation as a function of time. It was found that predicted and actual experimental values were close at least for the first …

Immobilization Of Heavy Metals In Incinerator Ash Using A Microbiological System, Gordon Hinshalwood Jan 1992

Immobilization Of Heavy Metals In Incinerator Ash Using A Microbiological System, Gordon Hinshalwood

Theses

The heavy metals contained in incinerator ash constitute an environmental hazard because they can be leached out of the ash matrix by rain water after the ash is landfilled. This study focused on a novel biological treatment process in which immobilization of the heavy metal content of incinerator ash is achieved using naturally occurring microorganisms. Specifically, immobilization was obtained by the use of a sulfide producing bacteriological system. The genus Desulfovibrio was cultured under anaerobic conditions, providing a source of sulfide from the reduction of sulfate as a natural metabolic function. The sulfide produced then formed highly insoluble precipitates with …

Binary Image Decomposition And Compression Using Mathematical Morphology For Object Recognition, Venu Gopal Gogusetti Jan 1992

Binary Image Decomposition And Compression Using Mathematical Morphology For Object Recognition, Venu Gopal Gogusetti

Theses

Image segmentation has been studied for several years. There are several segmentation techniques which are fast and effective but all of them are lacking the property of invariency to shift, rotation and sizing. In this study a new process is introduced which overcomes the shift, size and rotation variance and the compressed data can be used for object recognition.

Euclidean distance measurement is used in the compression process which is rotation invarient but is expensive in terms of time. Eucledean distance transformation is calculated using optimal double two scan algorithm with gray scale morphology, a new method developed by Dr. …

Conditional Artificial Dielectric : Optically Controlled Microwave Modulator, J. Manuel Jimenez Jan 1992

Conditional Artificial Dielectric : Optically Controlled Microwave Modulator, J. Manuel Jimenez

Theses

A conditional artificial dielectric with embeddings of either CdS, GaAs or Si in PMMA form the dielectric material of a microstrip in a homodyne microwave detection system. The system consists of a Michelson or Mach-Zehnder interferometers with the microstrip placed in one arm. The index of refraction of the microstrip substrate is modulated by chopped incident light causing amplitude and phase variations in the incoming RF signal. Those variations are detected by mixing the light modulated microwave carrier(information channel) with the unmodulated carrier (reference channel) in the interferometer. The output is sensed by the square law detector and a lock-in …

A Heuristical Method Of Corner Points Detection On An Image Boundary, Qiulin Li Jan 1992

A Heuristical Method Of Corner Points Detection On An Image Boundary, Qiulin Li

Theses

A heuristics-based method of corner points detection on an image boundary is proposed and implemented. The method uses the sampled boundary distances to find all of the candidate corner points along the image boundary. Then the curvature characteristical value is used to measure the severity of curvature change of the candidate points. Those candidates whose curvature characteristical value is under some threshold are eliminated. The paper also proposed some mechanism to reduce the effect of noises on the boundary. Experiments show that it is an efficient method and it gives satisfactory results on some image boundaries.
