Sex, Death, And The Landscape, Bernard Gross May 1992

Sex, Death, And The Landscape, Bernard Gross

Theses

It is now spring and perhaps the most appropriate time of year to be writing this particular document. The rapid changes make spring my favorite season. Everywhere I find the unexpected is common place and nature reveals herself in the cycle of re birth. This is how- I see my world, as one continuous cycle composed of many inter-related workings. Sex and death are only two moments in the drama of the circle of my landscape, but they are none the less of great significance. Man can not stop nature's cycles, however he can alter their content. The "Hindentrout" series …

Red And Green Make Yellow: An Interactive Multimedia Tutorial Designed To Teach The Basic Concepts Of Additive And Subtractive Color, Suzanne Grinnan May 1992

Red And Green Make Yellow: An Interactive Multimedia Tutorial Designed To Teach The Basic Concepts Of Additive And Subtractive Color, Suzanne Grinnan

Theses

The division between designers and printers is becoming increasingly blurred as the capabilities of the desktop environment improve. Electronic imaging is one area where this disintegration is rapidly occurring. Abilities that were formerly the domain of the color separator, image assembler, and printer, such as scanning, color correction, and film separation, are available through many popular software programs. Unfortunately, the education required to allow the proper application of these software options is not as accessible as the tools themselves. Both printers and graphic designers will have to educate themselves about the emerging and changing technologies of the other. Eventually a …

A Guide To Computer-Based Training For The Graphic Arts Industry, David E. Pease May 1992

A Guide To Computer-Based Training For The Graphic Arts Industry, David E. Pease

Theses

Industry in the United States is facing one of the greatest hurdles of all time, that of retraining its work force. The printing industry, in particular, faces a continuing lack of experienced and knowledgeable people. It has begun cooperative efforts to retrain workers in the basic skills needed to run a printing operation. Subjects like basic math, accounting, writing, and sciences round out the curriculum. Also on the scene are entrepreneurial training firms. Off-site training typically goes for $250-350 per person per day; the on-site instruction goes for $400 and up. And then there are options like computer-based tutorials. A …

Spectral Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability: Acquisitionalysis Software Development, David James Delong May 1992

Spectral Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability: Acquisitionalysis Software Development, David James Delong

Theses

This work develops an acquisitionalysis software application to investigate the spectral content of the heart rate variability signal derived from an electrocardiographic (EKG) waveform. The location and strength of the frequency content reveals general information concerning sympathetic and parasympathetic activity within the autonomic nervous system of the study subject. Current investigations into pediatric head trauma patients have revealed specific correlations between spectral content of the heart rate variability and overall patient recovery. The levels of serum catecholamines, specifically epinephrine and norepinephrine, are also investigated for a possible correlation with both trauma severity and spectral power of the heart rate variability …

Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Feasibility Studies-Mass Balances, Liu Liu Apr 1992

Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Feasibility Studies-Mass Balances, Liu Liu

Theses

This laboratory has been developing processes for the remediation of soils contaminated with hazardous wastes using microwave treatment. The initial stage was to define situations in which microwave treatment could potentially have unique advantages, and to define the relevant physical chemical mechanisms. That having been accomplished, at the present stage, feasibility studies are being carried to determine whether or not on-site field testing is justified. To that end, mass balances on the processes are needed. In this study mass balance studies were carried out on the microwave assisted steam distillation of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and semi-volatile organics (SVOCs), respectively, …

The Multiple Dimensions Of Graphic Design, Jongruja Mai Viseshsin Apr 1992

The Multiple Dimensions Of Graphic Design, Jongruja Mai Viseshsin

Theses

This thesis project is concerned with experiments in multiple-dimensional graphic design and has been addressed to a wide audience of graphic design professionals who are interested in working with paper shape and form. Its purpose is to explain how to apply two and three dimensional design to Gestalt perceptual principles. A combination between Gestalt perceptual principles and multiple-dimensional graphic design is revolutionary for how dimension can change within the Gestalt perceptual content.

On Black-And-White Paper Image-Stability Enhancement, Christopher Gmuender Apr 1992

On Black-And-White Paper Image-Stability Enhancement, Christopher Gmuender

Theses

The photographic image is by nature fragile. Most photographic print images are supported by paper and most commonly employ silver as the light sensitive material. The finely dispersed silver filaments in a photographic emulsion are sensitive in that they are relatively easily oxidized by airborne pollutants, thereby destroying image information - be it data or pictures. The purpose of this project was to investigate protective treatments that would render a black and white image sufficiently stable in order to withstand long exposure to adverse conditions. This could only be achieved by employing a reliable test-method, jointly developed by the Image …

Framemaker(Tm) Software Applications Handbook, Philip Dixon Apr 1992

Framemaker(Tm) Software Applications Handbook, Philip Dixon

Theses

The purpose of this study is to develop a reference source that integrates information on incorporating text, graphics, and images into a page layout program. Historically, the technical writer was only responsible for the creation of text and utilized the services of a graphic artist for the creation of images. This process is time consuming and introduces errors into the publishing process. Currently, technical publishers are becoming responsible for the complete documents graphics, text, and images using word processing, design/illustration, CAD/CAM, and photo/image manipulation programs. Thus, the user must have training in the correct use of the four programs listed …

An Analysis Of How Altering Exposure Effects Color Differences In Critical Color Areas On Electrophotographic Off-Press Proofs, Jill Houghton Mudge Apr 1992

An Analysis Of How Altering Exposure Effects Color Differences In Critical Color Areas On Electrophotographic Off-Press Proofs, Jill Houghton Mudge

Theses

The purpose of this paper was to quantitatively analyze off-press color proofing methods for advertising material appearing in halftone publication gravure printing. This type of proofing has been an area of debate for the publications industry, especially in reference to the print quality of advertising material. The correlation between dot gain characteristics and the resulting color differences of off-press color proofing methods has been the center of greatest controversy. This paper has tested to determine if a correlation exists between dot gain characteristics and the resulting colorimetric-matching ability for color proofing methods used in halftone publication gravure. The variable dot-gain …

A Study Of Color Image Data Compression, Vassilis Koutsogiannis Apr 1992

A Study Of Color Image Data Compression, Vassilis Koutsogiannis

Theses

The space which black and white or color images require to be stored introduces one of the biggest problems in the field of Graphic Arts. A solution to this problem is offered through the use of software programs that compress the data of a scanned image. Compressing images without any consideration can create other problems. These problems arise because each image has a different structure . It is possible to classify images into three main categories using as a criterion the frequencies the images contain. The first category includes images that contain high frequencies -a lot of detail and very …

A Procedure To Characterize Electron-Beam Resist Using A Scanning Electron Microscope And Study Of Process Optimization Of An Electron Beam Imaging System Using Experimental Design Methods, Randall C. Pyles Apr 1992

A Procedure To Characterize Electron-Beam Resist Using A Scanning Electron Microscope And Study Of Process Optimization Of An Electron Beam Imaging System Using Experimental Design Methods, Randall C. Pyles

Theses

A procedure is established which will enable the study of contrast and sensitivity characteristics of electron-beam resist materials. The imaging system includes an electron beam-sensitive resist coating on an oxidized silicon substrate exposed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and developed in a suitable solvent. The results correlate with published data. A chemically amplified electron-beam resist imaging system is studied using a three level, three factor Box-Behnken design. The effects of postbake temperature, postbake time, and development time on contrast and sensitivity are presented.

Classicism: Seen Through Contemporary Furniture, Mark Joseph Spadafora

Theses

The purpose of my thesis is to develop a body of furniture that explores the relationship between architecture and furniture. This exploration focuses on issues such as form, space, proportion, color and texture. Within the exploration process, the visual aspects of classicism in architecture are investigated. The ideas behind the works of selected contemporary architects are examined and used as a reference to generate ideas for my thesis work. At the start of my thesis, I realized that there was confusion as to "what is classicism?". Whether I was talking to a faculty member or a student, I encountered an …

Theses

My husband and I chose to go to Walt Disney World for our honeymoon, because of his interest in animation. When we arrived the world that surrounded us was fascinating. It was amazing and strange how, for the time we were there, this fantasy land became a form of reality for us. While at Walt Disney World, I became very interested in set design. The environments created within Disney World allowed one to be entertained and amused, while traveling through dream lands. Being able to design with this kind of playfulness is very stimulating to me. Upon returning home from …

The purpose of this Thesis is to explore the use of borders. On one level, borders between countries and continents, both natural and man made, will be looked at. On another level, the actual physical borders of the paint and the paintings will be addressed. This exploration involves two main areas; inspiration and development, and process and techniques. Both of these areas contain unique issues which are equally important to the development of the Thesis. Within these main areas there are several specific categories of inquiry which I have addressed throughout my two years of study. Each category has contributed …

Bispectral Reconstruction Of Speckle-Degraded Images, Song Jin Mar 1992

Bispectral Reconstruction Of Speckle-Degraded Images, Song Jin

Theses

The bispectrum of a signal has useful properties such as being zero for a Gaussian random process, retaining both phase and magnitude information of the Fourier transform of a signal, and being insensitive to linear motion. It has found applications in a wide variety of fields. The use of these properties for reducing speckle in coherent imaging systems was investigated. It was found that the bispectrum could be used to restore speckle-degraded images. Coherent speckle noise is modeled as a multiplicative noise process. By using a logarithmic transformation, this speckle noise is converted to a signal independent, additive process which …

Practical Application Of Modal Analysis Techniques, James Perconti Mar 1992

Practical Application Of Modal Analysis Techniques, James Perconti

Theses

A procedure is presented for applying modern modal analysis tools in the area of structural dynamic design and analysis for the purpose of minimizing the required development time necessary to bring a product to the marketplace. Development time is minimized by reducing the number of design, build, and test iterations required to bring a product concept into production. This is done by using available modal analysis tools in a coordinated manor to generate a good understanding of the behavior of the design in the first development iteration. The finite element method and experimental modal analysis are used for design optimization …
