Performance Analysis Of Queueing Systems With Synchronous Server, Wonmu Hur
Performance Analysis Of Queueing Systems With Synchronous Server, Wonmu Hur
Theses
The performance measures are derived for a queueing system which is characterized by its synchronous server operations. This property is the one which normal queueing systems lack. A system of this nature contains a single common server to which multiple number of buffers are connected in parallel, where the server operates only when all system buffers are occupied.
In this thesis, the analysis is carried out focusing on the simplest system involving only two buffers. Throughout the analysis, a symmetricity of the system is assumed (i.e., system is symmetrical in terms of arriving customer statistics.). Also assumed are the Poisson …
The Acoustic Properties Of Human Femoral Bone, Mark Lacianca
The Acoustic Properties Of Human Femoral Bone, Mark Lacianca
Theses
Over the last decade, interest has grown in the use of the scanning acoustic microscope (SAM), with a single lens being used for both transmitting and receiving the acoustic signal. A major objective of this thesis was to determine if the transmission and ultrasonic techniques yield similar "quantitative" results, when measuring the elastic constants of human femoral bone. The transmission technique has been used since 1970 to yield values for the elastic properties of calcified tissue. Previously the SAM has been used as a qualitative tool, where an acoustic impedance map is produced. This map can show areas of bone …
Automatic Surface Mount Solder Joints Inspection, Zhu Liu
Automatic Surface Mount Solder Joints Inspection, Zhu Liu
Theses
This thesis reports the research results on automatic inspection of solder joints on printed circuit boards. The previous work on this subject has been advanced significantly in the following three aspects. With the support of AT&T Bell Lab, the most updated surface mount solder joints are inspected in this work instead of larger simulation solder joints or traditional through hole solder joints in the previous work. A small set of features is extracted for surface mount solder joints in both infrared and visual light inspection. A new image processing software named Khoros has been applied to improve the quality of …
Posterior Stabilized Knee Design Biomechanical Considerations, Donald E. Mcnulty
Posterior Stabilized Knee Design Biomechanical Considerations, Donald E. Mcnulty
Theses
Numerous posterior stabilized knee systems are available for primary and revision total knee arthroplasty. Design of these systems requires an understanding of the articulating geometries and kinematic/kinetic biomechanical considerations of the normal knee. The findings for the normal knee are integrated into the design of a prosthetic system.
The natural femoral, tibial and patella articulating geometries are defined to enable subsequent kinematic and kinetic analyses. The articulating geometries are characterized from review of anthropometric studies of the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joint.
The kinematic analysis of the natural knee defines knee motion in terms of rotation, adduction/abduction, range of motion and …

Three-Dimensional Beam-Columns, Mohammad Hassan Shams
Three-Dimensional Beam-Columns, Mohammad Hassan Shams
Theses
This thesis explores several special cases of three-dimensional beam-columns and suggests that the method of finite differences can be used when a solution of general case is required. The thesis begins with a review of the three-dimensional beam-column equations and then shows how these equations can be used to generate the member stiffness matrix for the nonlinear analysis of three-dimensional frames. Examples are included which discuss the differences between the analytical and numerical solutions.

Application Of Desktop Manufacturing System (Sla) For The Manufacturing Of A Centrifugal Pump Impeller Using Cad (I-Deas), Wasimuddin Azam Muhammad Syed
Theses
Desktop Manufacturing (DTM) systems which combine personal computer, laser and other technologies are being used to sculpt objects from computer generated models created on computer aided design (CAD) workstations. As a member of DTM systems, StereoLithography Apparatus (SLA) transforms 3-dimensional designs into a 3-D output. This can substantially reduce the time required to produce a prototype through the process of photopolymerization. The process involves the transfer of a liquid plastic monomer into a solid polymer by exposing it to ultraviolet light.
Although the process looks productive, inefficiencies can occur, if incorrect parameters are selected before its application for a particular …

Modeling, Evaluation, And Control Of A Flexible Manufacturing Cell Using Petri Nets, Glenn Arthur Thorniley
Theses
This thesis describes the usefulness of Petri nets in modeling, evaluating, and controlling a Flexible Manufacturing Cell (FMC). The basics of Petri net theory are explained and a specific FMC is examined. First, the FMC is modeled. The purpose of modeling is to facilitate the evaluation and provide a framework on which the control methodologies can be applied. The objective of the evaluation is to determine how the FMC would benefit most by replacing or adding equipment. Several ideas on control are combined to form a useful framework for the designing of the control net. With this framework the control …
Catalytic Ozone/Ultraviolet Light Oxidation Of Organics In Water : Integrated Charcoal/Ozonation/Uv Radiation, Dawei Wang
Theses
A novel heterogeneous catalytic-oxidation technology where activated carbon is used as a catalyst-adsorbent, ozone serves as the oxidant and UV light as activation agent, is developed in a lab scale study. We demonstrate this process for destruction of recalcitrant organics in water i.e: combined oxidation by ozone, UV light plus activated carbon. The investigation includes evalution of various operating conditions: ozone levels, activated carbon levels; time for complete destruction of the individual target pollutants, plus evalution of activity of the continuously recativated carbon surface in-situ. All experiments were performed at room temperature in a semi-batch reactor. Seven representative chemicals was …
Character Recognition Using String Matching, Xiaozhi Ye
Character Recognition Using String Matching, Xiaozhi Ye
Theses
To handle noisy and distorted pattern is the use of similarity or distance measures. A similarity or distance measure can be defined between a representation of an unknown pattern and a representation of a prototype pattern. Recognition of the unknown pattern can be carried out on the basis of the maximum-similarity or minimum distance criterion (Bunke 1990) This approach is proposed to recognize the noisy or distorted character image. In this work, a directly string representation of the pattern ( prototype as well as unknown input) using the histogram method, a decision procedure for classification is the well known Levenshtein …

Bragg Reflection Grating Waveguide, Wei Zhong
Theses
Bragg reflection waveguides (BRW) are non-conventional optical guides in which optical confinement is achieved via periodic set of grooves or stratified media along the guiding path. BRW may also serve as optical filters, because of spectral discrimination of the guiding process. A novel UV laser ablation technique was used in this thesis to fabricate periodic metal-clad polymeric waveguides. Spin-on technique was applied to fabricate the waveguide core on glass substrates, evaporation of metal film and selective ablation process defined the optical guides. Various periodicities have been fabricated and the near field patterns have been measured to compare the different guiding …

Removal Of Volatile Organic Compounds (Voc's) Acetone And Ethyl Alcohol Emitted In The Manufacture Of A Multi-Base Propellant, Yih-Leu Liu
Theses
The Production Base Modernization Activity located at Picatinny Arsenal, initiated this study for the removal of the low concentrations of VOC's, acetone and ethyl alcohol emitted from the mixer operation and the forced air dry unit in the manufacture of a multi -base propellant. Air pollution requirements necessitate 85 % removal of the VOC's prior to discharge of the vent gases into the atmosphere. Because of the availability of sulfuric acid, it is proposed to use 70 percent or stronger acid as the absorbing agent in a recirculating acid absorption tower.
Vapor - Liquid Equilibrium ( VLE ) data were …

Mineralization Of 2-Chlorophenol Using A Hollow Fiber Ultrafiltration System In Combination With A Reactor Containing An Immobilized White Rot Fungus, Sheau-Ming Tung
Theses
Phanerochaete chrysosporium, a white rot fungus was immobilized on a packed-bed reactor, and was used to mineralize an aqueous stream contaminated with 50 ppm of 2-chlorophenol. Hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes (for 5,000 daltons and 10,000 daltons molecular weight cut-oft) were utilized to retain the extracellular enzyme resulting from the immobilized fungus in a recirculation loop outside of the reactor.
It was found here that the concentration of proteins (roughly proportional to the extracellular enzyme releasd by the fungus) does not correlate with the rate of degradation of 2-chlorophenol in the system. The protein was concentrated 1.5 fold in the recycle …
Synthesis Of Bisphenol A Bis-2-Hydroxypropylmethacrylate (Bisgma) And Diethylchlorophosphate And 2-Hydroxyethylmethacrylate (Decp-Hema) And Preparation Of Dental Adhesives, Da Xie
Theses
BisGMA and DECP-HEMA were separately synthesized from Bisphenol A and glycidyl methacrylate and from diethylchlorophosphate and 2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate. The structure of the monomer, BisGMA, was further analyzed by means of chromatography, VPO, IR, FTIR and GC-MASS.
Based on the main monomers, BisGMA, DECP-HEMA and an organosilane compound, a dental adhesive has been formulated. Although the tervile strength of the adhesive has been found to be not as good as the adhesive formulated by a previous worker (student), its applicability to teeth is more suitable for clinic practice.

Detection Of Particles And Estimation Of Size Distribution In Process Fluids, Bo Li
Detection Of Particles And Estimation Of Size Distribution In Process Fluids, Bo Li
Theses
Process fluids may be degraded by large concentrations of suspended particles, formations of gel slugs, or the infiltration of air bubbles. The scattering of ultrasound is dependent upon the relation of the wavelength and the scatterers' dimensions. Relatively large objects are easily detected because of their strong scattering in the short wavelength limit (SWL), but small ones may be missed because of their weak scattering in the long wave length limit (LWL). When the object dimension is comparable with the wavelength of ultrasound (intermediate region), the approximations of both the SWL and the LWL do not apply. The work described …

A Computer Program For The Extraction Of Bipolar Transistor Spice Models, Larry Duane Delaney
A Computer Program For The Extraction Of Bipolar Transistor Spice Models, Larry Duane Delaney
Theses
Each year semiconductor manufacturers spend millions of dollars in the development of new products. It can be very costly to create on silicon a newly developed circuit, especially if it is not very manufacturable or poorly designed. To eliminate risk it is of utmost importance that circuit simulation be done correctly in the early stages of development. Simulation can only be as good as the model being used. Almost all designers whether digital, analogue, or mixed mode use SPICE to simulate their circuits. SPICE accuracy is inherently dependent on the discrete element models being used, i.e. transistors, diodes, mosfets. Development …

Syntheses And Comparative Studies Of 5-Membered Rig Sulfone Frameworks, David Engel
Theses
New sulfone derivatives were prepared and characterized for use as organic electron-transport agents (ETA). The novel sulfone framework is isomeric to the already existing 4-(dicyanomethylene)-4H-2-phenyl-benzo[b]thiapyran-1 ,1 -dioxide (BbPS). The materials were coated over electrophotoactive films in order that electronmobility and photodischarge experiments could be preformed. The electrophotograhic data of the new materials compared to BbPS showed slower film speed, a similar dark decay and higher electron-mobility.

Applications Of Fourier-Based Features For Classification Of Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery, David G. Ehrhard
Theses
A method for segmenting synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images has been developed to operate primarily in the frequency domain. It is based on and was tested against a similar method which involves isolating information of the frequency-domain image that defines unique textural features within a class. The comparison involved classifying four simple vegetation SAR scenes with both segmentation methods. A statistical test was then performed against the null hypothesis that the new textural segmentation method is as accurate or more accurate than the original method based on random pixel classification results. All tests concluded that the texture extraction methods are …
