Fiber Optic Sensor Based On Dual Ring Resonator System, Chenjun Fan
Fiber Optic Sensor Based On Dual Ring Resonator System, Chenjun Fan
Theses
A comprehensive study of fiber optic sensors based on a dual ring resonator system has been conducted. A new theoretical model is established for a single fiber optic ring resonator. The performance of fiber optic sensors based on the dual ring resonator system is then analyzed, based on this model. The best configuration for the dual ring resonator system is determined in terms of the shot-noise-limited minimum detectable phase change, as well as the environmental stability when polarization crosstalk is present. The relationship between the coherence length of semiconductor light sources and the resonator loop lengths is investigated, with the …
Electronic Properties Of Sensitizer Centers, Dan Zhang
Electronic Properties Of Sensitizer Centers, Dan Zhang
Theses
This investigation expands on previous photographic studies of the sensitivity of sulfur and sulfur-plus-gold sensitized octahedral AgBr emulsions to long wavelength light. The experimental atmosphere was controlled by a variable temperature vacuum sensitometer which reduced the oxygen and moisture content of emulsion coatings and thereby improved the efficiency of long wavelength sensitivity. The relative sensitivity at long wavelengths was determined as a function of wavelength, sensitizer level, and sensitizer type. The activation energy actually measures the energy for a hole release from an excited sensitizer center and not for an electron release as earlier work has claimed. By correlating the …

Characterization Of Dichroism And Linear Polarization Effects On Colorimetric Properties Of Plastic Transmitting Materials, Richard W. Riffel
Characterization Of Dichroism And Linear Polarization Effects On Colorimetric Properties Of Plastic Transmitting Materials, Richard W. Riffel
Theses
Polarization is not a new phenomenon. However, in some applications polarization can be a contributing factor to colorimetric mismatch between samples When investigating polarization effects, most work has centered on the application of circular polarization on absorption spectroscopy in organic molecules. However, little if any colorimetric research on plastic materials has been done. Given the fact that linear polarization is a naturally occurring phenomenon, the dichroic effect is further highlighted in some end-user applications. The current research defines a technique for characterizing the linear-polarization-induced dichroic effect in a transmitting plastics application. Included in the work is the description of a …
Evaluation Of Digital Image Compression Algorithms For Use On Lap Top Computers, Bernard V. Brower
Evaluation Of Digital Image Compression Algorithms For Use On Lap Top Computers, Bernard V. Brower
Theses
A technique for the evaluation of image compression algorithms was developed. This technique was then applied in the evaluation of six image compression algorithms (ARIDPCM, ISO/JPEG DCT, zonal DCT, proprietary wavelet, proprietary sub-band coding and the proprietary DCT). Of the six algorithms evaluated, the Wavelet algorithm performed the best on average in image quality at all bit rates. The JPEG DCT was concluded to be the most useful algorithm because of its performance and the advantages that come with being an international standard.
Aberrations Of Thick Phase Holographic Optical Elements, Hong Ouyang
Aberrations Of Thick Phase Holographic Optical Elements, Hong Ouyang
Theses
The wavefront quality of reconstructions from thick holographic optical elements (HOEs) is examined both theoretically and experimentally. The goal of this thesis is to verify the equations of the third-order aberration of HOE's by directly examining the reconstructed wavefront. In addition, possible limitations of holographic materials on HOE performance at low F-numbers and for various recording geometries are determined. The third objective is to test the wavelength shift aberration and to establish the extent to which misalignment can be used to compensate the aberration due to a shift in wavelength.

Integrating Computer Generated Animation And Videography, Annemaria Incorvia
Integrating Computer Generated Animation And Videography, Annemaria Incorvia
Theses
This thesis developed as a personal exploration in the compositing effects of computer generated imagery, traditional cel animation, and videography. Through trial, great error, and much modification, this collaboration evolved. As a product of transition and progression, it can be said, it echoes the absolute design process. In order to create a visually aesthetic ensemble while incorporating several techniques, each exploration was to support the whole in its depiction. Personal aesthetics and technical limitations determined the inclusion or abstraction of any particular approach, and to what degree, if any, that it would be used, modified or manipulated. Finally, these decisions …

Biomechanics Of Corneal Wound Healing, James Charles Ramier
Biomechanics Of Corneal Wound Healing, James Charles Ramier
Theses
The re-establishment of tissue continuity, function, and mechanical proper ties after a through-and-through incision is an important issue in corneal surgery and trauma. Variations in healing can affect vision and patient activity during the recovery period, which may last up to five years. Growth factors introduced into the open wound have the potential to speed up the wound-healing process. The current investigation is concerned with quantitatively characterizing the mechanical properties of corneal tissue and evaluating the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) on accelerating the wound-healing process as compared to a …
Addition Of Arenesulfenyl Chlorides To Quadricyclene, Robert J. Niger
Addition Of Arenesulfenyl Chlorides To Quadricyclene, Robert J. Niger
Theses
The addition of arenesulfenyl chlorides to quadricyclene has been investigated. These reactions are rapid, exothermic and yield primairly three isomers. Two of the isomers (type I and type II structures) have the norbornene and nortricyclene carbon skeletons respectively. The structure of the nortricyclene isomer has been thoroughly established with a wide variety of techniques including 2D NMR. It has been found that a bridged sulfonium ion is not an important product precurser in these electrophilic addition reactions. In a attempt to force the formation of a bridged ion, preliminary studies using arenesulfenyl chlorides in which the aromatic ring contains electron-donating …

Enhancements To Atmospheric-Correction Techniques For Multiple Thermal Images, Robert J. Mericsko
Enhancements To Atmospheric-Correction Techniques For Multiple Thermal Images, Robert J. Mericsko
Theses
Statistical estimation problems of atmospheric correction techniques for thermal infrared imagery have been studied. A revised multiple-view- angle atmospheric correction technique has been developed and tested using the LOWTRAN radiative transfer model as truth. Its average absolute temperature prediction accuracy for an independent data set is 0.8 K for long-wave infrared imagery and 1.0 K for mid -wave infrared imagery, when error-free data are assumed. The benefit of robust, resistant regression estimators was studied using Monte Carlo simulations having real -world measurement errors and data outliers. An error propagation analysis showed that 1.0-3.3 K of rms error is likely given …

Development Of A Ti:W Salicide-Nitride Based Multi-Layer Metallization For Vlsi Application, Kevin L. Witt
Theses
A multilayer metallization based upon an alloy of Titanium and Tungsten (30:70 atomic %), has been developed and evaluated. Using AES, XPS and RBS analysis techniques, a process to simultaneously form a refractory oxy-nitride diffusion barrier over a silicide contact has been characterized. By placing 300 Angstrom films' of Ti:W in an 800 mTorr ammonia environment at 800C, it is been demonstrated that silicides and oxy-nitrides of Titanium and Tungsten form in layers, with an overall thickness of 540 Angstroms. A test chip has been designed and fabricated using an nMOS process including the new metallization. Utilizing test structures such …
Quantitative Evaluation Of Six Multi-Spectral, Multi-Resolution Image Merger Routines, Gustav J. Braun
Quantitative Evaluation Of Six Multi-Spectral, Multi-Resolution Image Merger Routines, Gustav J. Braun
Theses
Currently, most image merger routines are judged on the enhanced appearance of the hybrid imagery that they create. Little or no quantitative analysis is given which represents a technique's ability to preserve the radiometry of the hybrid imagery. For this reason, a quantitative analysis of six multi-resolution, multitemporal, multi-sensor, multispectral image merger routines was performed. These techniques were designed to incorporate the high resolution spatial information of a panchromatic image with the spectral information of a low resolution multispectral image. The panchromatic imagery came from the French satellite Systeme Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) and the multispectral imagery came …

Mathematical Modeling Of Incompressible Flow Through A Collapsible Tube, Jennifer L. Lowdermilk
Mathematical Modeling Of Incompressible Flow Through A Collapsible Tube, Jennifer L. Lowdermilk
Theses
An in-depth examination of eight articles pertaining to collapsible tube phenomenon is provided. Experimental models and mathematical models are explored. Two mathematical models are developed by the author, each of which attempt to reproduce experimental data provided by Lyon [37]. Respective models produce sets of coupled differential equations, and Advanced Continuous Simulation Language (ACSL) is utilized to solve these equations. Neither of the author's models provides total numerical reproductions of the experimental data under consideration. However, general trends are obtained which correspond to those observed in Lyon's data. General responses to variations in system parameters are provided for both models.
Substituted Aromatic Polyesters: Degradation Studies, Scott Lee
Substituted Aromatic Polyesters: Degradation Studies, Scott Lee
Theses
Two liquid crystalline aromatic polyesters were studied by isothermal degradation techniques. Both polymers contain a common phenyl side chain group. However, one contains a styryl side chain and the other contains an a-methylstyryl side chain. Isothermal degradations under nitrogen and air were carried on both polymers. From the GC/MS analysis of the cold traps, it showed that both polymers gave off benzene or oxygenated benzene related products. Homopolymers containing only phenyl or a-methylstyryl side chain were prepared by solution polymerization techniques. Then isothermal degradation under air were also carried out on both homopolymers. The GC/MS analysis showed that the a-methylstyryl …
Light Scattering Study Of Attractive Interactions In A Model Microemulsion System, Dawn M. Campbell
Light Scattering Study Of Attractive Interactions In A Model Microemulsion System, Dawn M. Campbell
Theses
Static and dynamic (photon correlation spectroscopy) light scattering studies were conducted on AOT/WATER/n- DECANE microemulsions near room temperature. The molar ratio of water to AOT was varied from W = 20 to 30. The volume fractions of the studied microemulsions ranged from $ = 0.03 to 0.45. Static light scattering data was modeled by a theory based on attractive perturbations to hard spheres. From the model, values for A, the attractive perturbation to the second virial coefficient, were determined. It was found that A is an increasing function of W. Photon correlation spectra were analyzed in terms of an adhesive …

"In harmony there is no duality." My main intention was to create two different screens that would enhance and harmonize with the surroundings they were placed in. These two screens can be viewed from both sides. In the case of the three-paneled or Western-style screen, the woven cloth panels are supportive to the wood. In the Eastern-style screen, the wood is supportive to the woven drape. In the Western-style screen, I encorporated the materials, colors, and design that are in accord with the wood. In the Oriental-style screen, the colors represent feelings, as it did for the Impressionistic painters, also. …

Grueby, Newcomb, Teco, And Ohr: Market Trends And Connoisseurship Implications For American Art Pottery, Carolyn K. Sellers
Theses
This thesis examines market trends and connoisseurship implications for four prominent American art potteries—Grueby, Newcomb, Teco, and George Ohr—within the context of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Focusing on high-end auction sales from 1980 to 1991, the study identifies approximately 15 top-selling pieces from each pottery to explore intrinsic and extrinsic qualities that contribute to their value. Sellers provides historical background on the potteries, analyzes auction data, and outlines criteria that appraisers and collectors use to evaluate quality, such as form, glaze, rarity, and maker attribution. The research situates these ceramics within the broader cultural and philosophical ideals of the …

Process Development Of An Analog/Digital Mixed-Mode Bicmos System At Rit, Karl D. Hirschman
Theses
The development of an analog/digital mixed-mode BiCMOS process is presented. The process uses the RIT factory n-well CMOS process as its baseline process. The process is tailored to meet the requirements of an analog/digital system, while minimizing process complexity and maximizing compatibility with the established CMOS process. The process development includes determining the device requirements for the BiCMOS process, evaluating the established CMOS process, and integrating the additional process steps into the baseline process. TMA SUPREM III 1-D Process Analysis Program and RIT's processing history are used as guidelines, keeping manufacturability an important issue. An integrated test chip is developed …
If I Had One -- It Would Be Huge, Melissa Lee Matthews
If I Had One -- It Would Be Huge, Melissa Lee Matthews
Theses
By alluding to genitalia, "If I Had One-It Would Be Huge" calls attention to the need in contemporary society to eliminate gender bias in favor of more relevant criteria for evaluating an individual's worth and potential. Gender is never an appropriate criterion. By referring to "one," it also alludes to bringing what appears to be opposite elements, materials, and viewpoints into compatibility. On examination of the completed pieces which I selected for the thesis exhibit, I found that a quote from Eugene Delacroix1 was very appropriate as the "Artist's Statement" for my thesis exhibit: The scientist discovers the elements of …
