A Parallel Processing Architecture For Dqdb Protocol Implementation, Nilesh Vinubhai Gandhi Oct 1993

A Parallel Processing Architecture For Dqdb Protocol Implementation, Nilesh Vinubhai Gandhi

Theses

The high bandwidth transmission links, which have been provided by the advances of Fiber Optics Technology, reduce drastically the packet transmission times and place new demands on the nodal protocol processing. Segmentation and reassembly of packets, computation of checksums, introduction of source and destination addresses, etc., must be performed extremely fast in order to prevent node processing from becoming the bottleneck of the transmission. Parallel processing enables the execution of the previous tasks on multiple packets simultaneously and therefore has the potential of addressing the issue of fast node processing successfully. In this thesis we focus on the Medium Access …

Laser Ablation Of Silicon Surfaces : The Effects Of A Low Level Background Light, Taposh Kumar Gayen Oct 1993

Laser Ablation Of Silicon Surfaces : The Effects Of A Low Level Background Light, Taposh Kumar Gayen

Theses

The performance of high speed optoelectronic and microelectronic devices largely depends on the uniqueness and development of the fabrication technology. Laser ablation has proven to be an effective three dimensional surface patterning technology. In this thesis, we present findings on the patterning of semiconductor surfaces using laser ablation in air as well as in solutions.

In this thesis, we suggest that the depth of a pattern induced on silicon by firing a pulsed excimer laser in air varies almost linearly with the number of pulses. We report that a He-Ne laser as a background light source has virtually little or …

An Efficient Guaranteed Bandwidth And Balancing Mechanism For High Speed Mans, Venediktos Hadjisavvas Oct 1993

An Efficient Guaranteed Bandwidth And Balancing Mechanism For High Speed Mans, Venediktos Hadjisavvas

Theses

The Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) has become the IEEE 802.6 stan-dard for Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). The main advantage of DQDB is that its throughput performance is not affected by the network parameters such as size, number of connected stations, or channel bandwidth. Its main drawback is that the location of the stations on the bus strongly affects their performance. For this reason a Bandwidth Balancing Mechanism (BBM_DQDB) has been proposed and included in the 802.6 standard that can provide the requested bandwidth by the lightly loaded stations and evenly distribute the remaining bandwidth among the overloaded stations. The …

Model Parameter Identification Of The Oscillatory Potential In The Electroretinogram, Sung Hoon Jang Oct 1993

Model Parameter Identification Of The Oscillatory Potential In The Electroretinogram, Sung Hoon Jang

Theses

A mathematical model of the oscillatory potential which may be a useful clinical tool to diagnose the progression of diabetic retinopathy. The model has been investigated by compressing from oscillatory potential into three parameters which contain most of the information for the oscillatory potential data.

About thirty subjects including both normal and diabetic subjects were investigated in this study. Comparing normal and diabetic subjects, we found amplitude parameter was most important factor to classify subjects by normal and diabetic.

Since modeling of the oscillatory potential and the estimation of the model parameters were our final goal, we haven't proposed to …

Object Oriented Design Of Petri Net Simulator, Himanshu Juneja Oct 1993

Object Oriented Design Of Petri Net Simulator, Himanshu Juneja

Theses

Petri nets are highly useful for modeling discrete event dynamic systems. The objective of this effort is to develop a tool for drawing, editing and simulating Petri nets using object oriented programming on a standard platform. The object oriented approach was chosen because of its code reuse and extendability features which simplify the task of adding features to the tool as the model evolves. The design stresses on modeling of the problem by objects which closely relate the system design with the implementation.

C++ is used for implementing the object oriented design, and the XView toolkit is used for building …

A Supercritical Extraction Screening System purchased from Autoclave Engineers of Erie, Pennsylvania was modified slightly for use as the laboratory equipment. The experiment consists of extracting solid naphthalene from a sand bed in a fixed bed extractor and determining the mass transfer coefficient for the unit.

The lab has been designed to allow the students to develop their own experimental plan without much direct input. The experimental outline provided for the students primarily focuses on information needed for safe and proper …

Simplification Of The Generalized Adaptive Neural Filter And Comparative Studies With Other Nonlinear Filters, Henry Steven Hanek Oct 1993

Simplification Of The Generalized Adaptive Neural Filter And Comparative Studies With Other Nonlinear Filters, Henry Steven Hanek

Theses

Recently, a new class of adaptive filters called Generalized Adaptive Neural Filters (GANFs) has emerged. They share many characteristics in common with stack filters, include all stack filters as a subset. The GANFs allow a very efficient hardware implementation once they are trained. However, there are some problems associated with GANFs. Three of these arc slow training speeds and the difficulty in choosing a filter structure and neural operator.

This thesis begins with a tutorial on filtering and traces the GANF development up through its origin -- the stack filter. After the GANF is covered in reasonable depth, its use …

Development Of An Intelligent Geometry Measurement Procedure For Coordinate Measuring Machines, Tae-Sung Kim Oct 1993

Development Of An Intelligent Geometry Measurement Procedure For Coordinate Measuring Machines, Tae-Sung Kim

Theses

A Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) is a highly accurate electronic scale for the automatic measurement of 2 and 3 dimensional geometries. In a typical operation the CMM measures a set of user defined points, and then utilizes some internal logic to ascertain whether the inspected part meets the specifications. CMMs have received widespread acceptance among the manufacturing community, and in many instances are required as per supplier contract. Applications of CMMs vary from the measurement of simple 2D parts to complex 3D spatial frames (as for example in their use to measure the integrity of automobile frames). The primary objective …

Vibratory Size Segregation Of Particulate Matter, Anthony La Rosa Oct 1993

Vibratory Size Segregation Of Particulate Matter, Anthony La Rosa

Theses

Size segregation imposed by vibration or shaking is an ubiquitous phenomenon whereby a large particle will rise to the top of a bed of smaller spheres upon vibration. Several mechanisms based on computer simulations have been proposed, however a complete theory remains elusive. The objective of this study was to perform experiments to study vibratory segregation of particles for varying size ratios and vibration parameters. More specifically, the rise time of a sphere from the bottom to the top of a vibrated bed was examined. It was found that the rise time decreased with an increase in amplitude for fixed …

Modeling Of Rapid Thermal Processing System By Finite Element Method, Helen Martynov Oct 1993

Modeling Of Rapid Thermal Processing System By Finite Element Method, Helen Martynov

Theses

A finite element model for the Rapid Thermal Processing (RTP) system at NJIT was developed based on the software package MSC/NASTRAN. Based on this model, a thermal analysis of the 9" chamber, 3 zones (37 lamps) RTP system was conducted for various modes of system operation with the 6" silicon wafer temperature varying from 300°K to 1100°K. An open-loop control algorithm was developed in order to study the dependence of wafer temperature on time, position, and applied radiant heat distribution. It was shown that the non-uniformity in the radial temperature profile can be less than 3°C during wafer heating at …

Local Stress Factors Of Pipe-Nozzle Due To Radial Load, Circumferential And Longitudinal Moments, Junyu Lin Oct 1993

Local Stress Factors Of Pipe-Nozzle Due To Radial Load, Circumferential And Longitudinal Moments, Junyu Lin

Theses

This thesis presents a series of stress factor data which provide more detailed information for the calculation of local stresses at the nozzle region, as well as the pipe region, of a pipe-nozzle intersection, subjected to an external radial load, circumferential bending moment, and longitudinal bending moment, respectively.

The pipe and nozzle thicknesses are assumed to be identical. Numerical solutions are obtained through the use of the finite element method. In obtaining the numerical solutions via ANSYS, the quadrilateral element is used to simulate the thin shell pipe-nozzle geometries. The local stresses, at eight different points on both the pipe …

The power line implementation of the consumer electronic bus (PL CEBUS) is a promising and inexpensive approach for home automation. Since the intro¬duction of the PL CEBUS standards, there has been increasing efforts on evaluating its performance. However, all the works have been performed for unacknowledged networks. This thesis presents the first successful evaluation of the PL CEBUS with acknowledment. Three different cases, namely, 600, 300 and 100 bits packet sizes, have been considered. The evaluation included the simulation of performance parameters such as message and packet delays, message throughput, and channel throughput. Acknowledged network performance has been confirmed to …

Far Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy Using Ring Interferometer, Changqing Qiu Oct 1993

Far Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy Using Ring Interferometer, Changqing Qiu

Theses

A circular mirror interferometer named ring interferometer, which was designed by Dr. K.D. Moller, was built and set up for far-infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The ring interferometer has ten circular mirrors with the same area. By applying Fraunhofer diffraction theory, the calculation shows that the ring interferometer will have large diffraction angle range compared with lamellar grating interferometer which has rectangular mirrors with same width. Therefore the ring interferometer will be more efficient than lamellar grating in far-infrared spectroscopy. The experimental results show that this ring interferometer will work as expected.

In addition, a "home made" helium cooled detector was …

An Application Of Neural Networks To Statistical Process Control, Asterios Papaikonomou Oct 1993

An Application Of Neural Networks To Statistical Process Control, Asterios Papaikonomou

Theses

Recent changes in the past World War II economy have produced a more educated, value driven customer. A global economy has emerged to technological advances which has made competition fierce as well as proximate. As a result, manufacturing companies are required to provide consumers with quality products at a reasonable cost. A quality product is defined as one that fulfills the needs and expectations of the consumer and provides him with a sense of value.

Since all companies want to provide quality products, the reason why poor quality is sometimes the result is not the outcome of actions for that …

Optimization Of Flow In The Collecting Duct During The Concentrating Mode And The Diluting Mode In A Nephron Population Of Two Different Length With The Renin Angiotensin System And Adh Mechanism, Sivakumar Subramanian

Theses

Our present study is to find out how the short and long nephrons are interacting in the human kidney to adjust the flow in the collecting duct to have the maximum flow during the diluting mode and minimum flow during the concentrating mode. The best lengths for the short nephron and long nephron are calculated during the concentrating mode and the diluting mode by using the Newton-Raphson method. If one wants the kidney to perform only the above mentioned functions, a design criteria for an artificial kidney has been proposed. These studies have provided qualitative information regarding the concentrating mechanism …

Linear Ccd Motion Detection System, Thekepat J. Sudesh Oct 1993

Scanning Ratios For Desktop Imaging, Mike Beaulieu Oct 1993

Scanning Ratios For Desktop Imaging, Mike Beaulieu

Theses

Users of desktop scanning technology are conscious about the quality the image detail reproduction. Repeatability and accuracy are based on certain standards. Established scanning procedures for charged couple device (CCD) desktop scan ners are primarily influenced by the Nyquist Criterion which states that an image must be sampled at twice the frequency of the line screen ruling that will be used to print the final image. These "rules of thumb" appear in many techni cal and trade publications that are consulted by the printing industry in order to insure the quality of printed products. Quality is not the only factor …

Laboratory Investigation Of The Effect Of The Dampening Solution On The Loss Of Surface Strength Of Coated Paper, Chung-Ni Liu Oct 1993

Laboratory Investigation Of The Effect Of The Dampening Solution On The Loss Of Surface Strength Of Coated Paper, Chung-Ni Liu

Theses

Wet pick is thought to be caused by the presence of water used in lithography. The quantity of the wetting fluid, surface tension of the wetting fluid and the time interval between wetting and printing were tested to see if they affect the paper surface strength. Two rolls of web paper are pre-sampled from the RIT press room. One was found to exhibit the problem of wet pick while the other did not exhibit this defect. These papers were tested on the IGT Printability Tester in a manner similar to that predicted on press when a moisture film of 0.2 …

Infrared Symbolic Scene Comparator, Thomas G. Servoss Oct 1993

Infrared Symbolic Scene Comparator, Thomas G. Servoss

Theses

Infrared image analysis has become a very popular subject of study. Situations as recent as the Gulf War have proved the advantages, and therefore the need, of having not only the proper imaging equipment but the training and expertise to use that equipment. To date, there are few tools that analysts can use to educate themselves and the operators of the state-of-the-art imaging equipment. There are even fewer tools that provide the flexibility to control nearly every aspect of infrared imaging phenomena. Several pre-existing and a few new remote sensing sub-systems have been combined to create an extremely user-friendly infrared …

A Self-Timed Implementation Of The Bi-Way Sorter Systolic Array Processor, Mitchell Diamond Oct 1993

A Self-Timed Implementation Of The Bi-Way Sorter Systolic Array Processor, Mitchell Diamond

Theses

Self-timed circuits with an appropriate handshake control circuit can be used to replace the global clock in a VLSI chip. By replacing the global clock many problems which face designers have disappeared along with the clock. Some of these problems are due to clock skew and capacitance scaling with smaller feature sizes. The wire capacitance cannot scale below a certain limit due to two-dimensional effects, therefore the RC delays associated with the interconnect layers do not scale proportion.ally to the feature size. The resultant increase in wire delay makes it difficult to distribute a global clock at a high frequency. …

Synthetic Image Generator Model: Application Of Specular And Diffuse Reflectivity Components And Performance Evaluation In The Visible Region, Richard Stark Sep 1993

Synthetic Image Generator Model: Application Of Specular And Diffuse Reflectivity Components And Performance Evaluation In The Visible Region, Richard Stark

Theses

This study focused on the operation of the RIT Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Lab's synthetic image generation (DIRSIG) software model in the 0.4 to 1.0 urn wavelength region. The overall intent was to create a baseline for future DIRSIG activity. This was achieved by modifying the infrared based software to account for the characteristics of visible energy, and then evaluating the model's overall performance. A modification was made to the model's radiance algorithm by dividing surface reflectivity into a combination of view angle dependent diffuse and specular components. Additionally a practical method was developed for generating these values. Performance …

Organometallics: (I) Synthesis Of A Macrocyclic Complex Praeseodymium And (Ii ) Effect Of Wilkinson's Catalyst On The Cleavage Of Cyclohexene Oxide By Borane, Carolyn Ruth

Theses

(I) The template synthesis and characterization of the complex of praeseodymium acetate from 2,6-diacetylpyridine and orthophenylenediamine was attempted. The attempted synthesis produced a green precipitate with a high melting point and poor solubility in organic solvents, unlikely characteristics for compound 1 seen on the page. This project was set aside due to the apparent failure to produce the desired compound. (II) The effect of Wilkinson's catalyst on the treatment of cyclohexene oxide with borane-THF at 72 for 5 1/2 hours was also investigated. Oxidation of the organoborane formed by both the catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions produced cyclohexanol. Another significant product …

A Comparison Of Methods For Forming Multitemporal Composites From Noaa Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Data, Craig Laben Aug 1993

A Comparison Of Methods For Forming Multitemporal Composites From Noaa Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Data, Craig Laben

Theses

Processed satellite data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) generally consists of earth imagery which is obstructed to some extent by cloud coverage. Cloud-free images of certain geographic locations are valuable for numerous remote sensing applications. One way of obtaining a cloud-free image of an area is by the generation of a multitemporal composite. This involves generating images from consecutive satellite passes and selecting cloud-free areas from each day. These cloud-free areas can be pieced together to form a composite image clear of any cloud coverage. A study was conducted in which different methods of forming multitemporal composites …
