Computer Aided Design And Simulation Of An Intergrated Photonic Delay Line System For Phased Array Antenna And Other Microve Signal Processing Applications, Kevin Baldwin Aug 1993

Computer Aided Design And Simulation Of An Intergrated Photonic Delay Line System For Phased Array Antenna And Other Microve Signal Processing Applications, Kevin Baldwin

Theses

Over the past few years, phased array antennas and variable RF/Microwave delay lines have been the subject of much research. This thesis presents a photonic solution to the generation of multiple, compact delay lines. Variable time delays are generated by optically tapping points on an acousto-optic cell by the use of a deformable mirror device. Isolation of a particular time delay is accomplished by the conversion of a time delay point into a corresponding spatial frequency by the use of appropriate optics. The desired time delay is recovered by heterodyning a local oscillator with the desired spatial frequency, selected by …

Channel Routing: Efficient Solutions Using Neural Networks, Taj-Ul Islam Aug 1993

Channel Routing: Efficient Solutions Using Neural Networks, Taj-Ul Islam

Theses

Neural network architectures are effectively applied to solve the channel routing problem. Algorithms for both two-layer and multilayer channel-width minimization, and constrained via minimization are proposed and implemented. Experimental results show that the proposed channel-width minimization algorithms are much superior in all respects compared to existing algorithms. The optimal two-layer solutions to most of the benchmark problems, not previously obtained, are obtained for the first time, including an optimal solution to the famous Deutch's difficult problem. The optimal solution in four-layers for one of the be lchmark problems, not previously obtained, is obtained for the first time. Both convergence rate …

The Design Of A 10bit 15mhz Analog To Digital Convertor, Scott L. Tewinkle Aug 1993

The Design Of A 10bit 15mhz Analog To Digital Convertor, Scott L. Tewinkle

Theses

A 10 bit 15Mhz Analog-to-Digital converter (ADC) has been designed using a novel three step conversion technique. Successive 4bit, 3bit, and 3bit flash cycles are done for a complete conversion. Each flash cycle uses 15 comparators even though the second and third cycles require only seven comparators. The eight extra comparators are used for 4LSB digital error correction. Since, the ADC requires more than one clock cycle for a complete conversion two parallel comparator banks are used to obtain the 15Mhz conversion rate. A test chip has been designed with a 2 micron, double metal, single polysilicon, nwell CMOS technology. …

Csg Based Automatic Mesh Generation Using Multiple Element Types, Richard H. Hall Aug 1993

Csg Based Automatic Mesh Generation Using Multiple Element Types, Richard H. Hall

Theses

The objective of this thesis project is to explore a unique approach toward automatic mesh generation for finite element analysis. Current mesh generation algorithms are only applicable to a single type of domain. Countless mesh generators exist for meshing 2D regions with triangles and quadrilaterals, and mesh generators also exist which can mesh 3D regions with tetrahedra and other element types. However, not all structures are strictly "2D" or "3D", and not all structures are best modeled with a single type of element. An experienced finite element analyst typically uses many types of elements when modeling a real problem. This …

Synthetic Routes Towards Spin Probe-Grafted Copolymers, Christopher Mccarthy Aug 1993

Synthetic Routes Towards Spin Probe-Grafted Copolymers, Christopher Mccarthy

Theses

Nitroxide spin labels can be useful as oxygen probes since the shape of the characteristic three line electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum broadens in the presence of molecular oxygen. In order to use these probes in. vivo to measure oxygen content of tumors, contact of toxic nitroxides with tissues must be prevented. This study describes synthesis and characterization of several styrene/maleic anhydride copolymers containing grafted 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-aminopiperidine-1- oxyl (TEMPO) spin probes. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy was used to determine the structure of the copolymers. ESR spectroscopy was used to contrast the free radical activity of the copolymer in an nitrogen-rich and oxygen-rich …

Automated Image-To-Image Rectification For Use In Change Detection Analysis As Applied To Forest Clearcut Mapping, Kaleen S. Moriarty Aug 1993

Automated Image-To-Image Rectification For Use In Change Detection Analysis As Applied To Forest Clearcut Mapping, Kaleen S. Moriarty

Theses

An automated approach to change detection analysis was developed for use in multi-temporal image comparisons. An algorithm was developed which enables the user to perform automatic image-to-image rectification. Manual registration techniques are utilized to register a reference image to a Universe Transverse Mercator map projection. Control points, or kernel images, are extracted from the rectified reference image and located automatically in the to-be-mapped images via mathematical correlation. A two windowed approach is used that requires an estimation of the location of the control point in the to-be-mapped image. This estimate is used to create a search area which is correlated …

Morphological Classification Of Noisy Shapes Via Exterior Granulometries, Yingchong Cheng Jul 1993

Morphological Classification Of Noisy Shapes Via Exterior Granulometries, Yingchong Cheng

Theses

Shape classification via linear granulometric moments is examined for patterns suffering varying degrees of edge noise. It is seen that recognition is quite poor even for modest amounts of noise and remains poor even when the patterns are first filtered by a close-open filter. Recognition accuracy is greatly improved, for both unfiltered and filtered images, by employing exterior granulometries. These are constructed by applying the various linear structuring-element sequences to the corresponding linear convex hulls of the noisy patterns. The resulting granulometric distributions are then not corrupted by noise-induced probability mass at the left of the pattern spectrum, thereby greatly …

An Investigation Of Point Image Analysis For Evaluating Holographic Image Quality, Parker Bennett Plaisted Jul 1993

An Investigation Of Point Image Analysis For Evaluating Holographic Image Quality, Parker Bennett Plaisted

Theses

Several holographic lenses were constructed and tested. The point spread functions of the lenses were scanned to obtain edge traces. The modulation transfer functions and the line spread functions were calculated from the edge traces. An integration of the MTFs provided a signal-to-noise metric similar to the Strehl ratio. The diffraction efficiencies of the lenses were measured. The results showed that all of these image quality metrics can be obtained from a point image.

Design For Manufacturing: Performance Characterization Of Digital Vlsi Systems Using A Statistical Analysis/Inference Methodology, J. Ignacio Espinosa De Los Monteros

Theses

Design For Manufacturing (DFM) is a TQM methodology by which inherently producible products can be manufactured with high yields, short turnaround time and great flexibility. The key to the success of any DFM program lies in increased accuracy in the modeling of the process and product designs, product simulations and effective manufacturing feedback of key parametric data. That is, properly modeling and simulating designs with data which reflects current fabrication capabilities has the most lasting influence in the performance of products. It is this area that is tackled in the methodology developed hereafter; a method by which to feedback and …

Character Recognition Of Optically Blurred Textual Images Using Moment Invariants, Adam Hanson Jun 1993

Character Recognition Of Optically Blurred Textual Images Using Moment Invariants, Adam Hanson

Theses

Statistical moment invariants were used to generate a feature space for classifying images of text characters. The feature vector of a given letter is invariant to changes in scale, position, rotation, and contrast in the image. Test character images were generated by simulated optical blurring. Images were classified by calculating the distance between the feature vector of a given test character and that of each reference character. The test character was identified as the reference character for which the distance between feature vectors is a minimum. Significantly blurred characters were classified correctly using this method.

Investigation Into Optimal Rh(Iii) Deopant Placement In Silver Bromide Emulsions, David A. Telep Jun 1993

Investigation Into Optimal Rh(Iii) Deopant Placement In Silver Bromide Emulsions, David A. Telep

Theses

An optimal rhodium (III) doping scheme for silver bromide emulsions was sought which maximized emulsion speed loss, emulsion contrast and coated emulsion stability. Experimental results showed that the photographically active rhodium complex must be co-precipitated with the silver bromide in order to achieve a sensitometric modification of the final emulsion. This dopant induced sensitometric modification was not stable and decayed with time.

Cullet, Charles Sorrels Jun 1993

Cullet, Charles Sorrels

Theses

This paper discusses a series of five sculptures that are now five and one-half years old. Today these sculptures are scattered and in some cases gone, but the goals and the decisions which shaped their creation in 1986 and 1987 are still fresh in my memory. They were important experiments for me, and I carry them with me today. I would not claim these sculptures defined me as the artist I am now, but they do define me as the artist I was then. And to that extent, my understanding of myself is enriched by this thesis work. In 1986 …

Implementation Of An Object-Oriented University Database Using Vodak/Vml Prototype-2/C++, Bheeman Lingan, Madhumathi Tulasiram

Theses

Object-oriented database (OODB) technology has become very popular and successful in recent years. Currently, there are many commercial object-oriented database systems available that are used for developing large and complex real world applications. In addition, there are many research prototypes of object-oriented databases available. In a joint research project of the CIS Dept at NJIT and GMD-IPSI an object-oriented data model called the Dual Model was developed. Using this Dual Model a university environment database schema was designed. This univesity database schema was implemented using the VODAK/VML OODB prototype - 1. The university database was then reimplemented using the C++ …

Bayesian Methods In Preoperative Risk Assessment For Cardiac Surgery, Huey-Chung Teng May 1993

Bayesian Methods In Preoperative Risk Assessment For Cardiac Surgery, Huey-Chung Teng

Theses

Many strides have been made in the last decade to improve the accuracy of preoperative risk estimation, particular for cardiovascular surgery. It is our goal to estimate the preoperative risk associated with cardiac bypass surgery for patients in different risk categories. These risk categories are determined by the Parsonett model.

The Parsonett model assigns a risk value to a range of risk factors consisting of patient attributes and disease parameters. Logistic modeling is applied to generate a comprehensive risk function. The database being utilized contains over 3,000 patients who have had cardiovascular surgery within the last 5 years.

An Elementary Reaction Model For Thermal Decomposition Of Cf2cl2 In A H2 Atmosphere And Experimental Studies On Oxidation Of Ch3oh Plus Ch4 Under Fuel Rich, Stoichiometric And Fuel Lean Conditions, Cheng Guo May 1993

An Elementary Reaction Model For Thermal Decomposition Of Cf2cl2 In A H2 Atmosphere And Experimental Studies On Oxidation Of Ch3oh Plus Ch4 Under Fuel Rich, Stoichiometric And Fuel Lean Conditions, Cheng Guo

Theses

Pyrolysis of CF2CL2 in an atmosphere of H2, has been studied in a tubular flow reactor, 723 to 873 K. Overall eaction conversion proceeds via loss of Cl with CHF2CL formation, then loss of the second Cl atom and CH2F2 product. Initiation occurs by unimolecular Cl atom loss. Subsequent chain propagation steps rapidly generate active H atoms which abstract Cl atoms, but abstraction of fluo-rine atoms by atomic hydrogen is slow at the temperatures of this study.

A small mechanism, about 35 elementary reaction steps, and a thermodynamic data base …

Fair And Efficient Transmission Over Gbps Dual Ring Networks, Abdelnaser M. Adas May 1993

Fair And Efficient Transmission Over Gbps Dual Ring Networks, Abdelnaser M. Adas

Theses

The advances in fiber optics technology provide large bandwidth and enable the support of a wide variety of services. New network architectures have been proposed, such as Metaring and Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB), that try to take advantage of the new capabilities. Because of the very small packet transmission time relative to the feedback time a challenging issue in high speed networks is the efficient and fair share of the channel bandwidth among the competing users. In this thesis we first investigate and compare the performance of the Global and Local Fairness Mechanisms (GFM and LFM, respectively). They have …

Performance Of Different Strategies For Error Detection And Correction In Arithmetic Encoding, George F. Elmasry May 1993

Performance Of Different Strategies For Error Detection And Correction In Arithmetic Encoding, George F. Elmasry

Theses

Lossless source encoding is occasionally used in some data compression applications. One of these encoding schemes is the arithmetic encoding.

When data is to be transmitted via communication channel, noise and impurities imposed by the channel cause errors. To reduce the effect of errors, channel encoder is added prior to transmission through the channel. Channel encoder inserts some bits that help channel decoder at the receiver end to detect and correct errors. These added error detection and correction bits are redundancy that causes reduction in the compression ratio and hence an increase in data rate through the channel. The higher …

Design Of A 320x122 Mwir-Ccd Ptsi-Si Imaging Radiometer With Automatic Optical Integration Time Control, Nathaniel Joseph Mccaffrey May 1993

Design Of A 320x122 Mwir-Ccd Ptsi-Si Imaging Radiometer With Automatic Optical Integration Time Control, Nathaniel Joseph Mccaffrey

Theses

An infrared CCD camera system was designed and developed to operate a 320X244 Schottky-barrier IR-CCD Focal Plane Array (FPA) as an imaging radiometer. The goal of this research was to develop a reliable radiometer capable of resolving temperatures between 50 and 1000°C to within 1°C accuracy using non-contact spectral thermographic methods. To accomodate this wide dynamic range, the imager was operated in a non-interlaced format with variable optical integration times ranging from 120µsec to 122msec. Variable integration control was achieved by employing a "dump and read" timing procedure. To facilitate this operation, novel circuitry was developed for dynamically controlling the …

Non-Contact Measurement For Thermal Conductivity Of Diamond-Like And Hard Carbon Thin Films, Ganming Qin May 1993

Non-Contact Measurement For Thermal Conductivity Of Diamond-Like And Hard Carbon Thin Films, Ganming Qin

Theses

In this research work, non-contact temperature measurement was applied to determine the thermal conductivity of diamond-like and hard carbon thin films. Dielectric materials widely used as thin films in device manufacturing are SiO2, Si3N4, polymer, and etc. However, their heat dissipating capacity is not good for power devices. It is necessary to develop a new material for this purpose. Diamond crystal is a high quality dielectric material. It has the highest room-temperature thermal conductivity [k=20W (cm · K) at 20°C] among all materials. In addition, it has high electrical resistivity ( >1016 Ω …

Multilevel Embeddings For Massively-Parallel Hypercubes, Devenkuma P. Shah May 1993

Multilevel Embeddings For Massively-Parallel Hypercubes, Devenkuma P. Shah

Theses

Hierarchically structured arrays of processors have widely been used in the low and intermediate phases of image processing and computer vision. Since the pyramid structure efficiently supports local and global operations extensively required by these phases, it has been widely used for relevant algorithms. Multilevel systems keep all the advantages of the pyramid structure while providing a general hierarchical structure that is easier to be used for the development of several algorithms and may also provide higher performance.

Although the cost of pyramid machines may be tremendously high, they have limited applications. In contrast, the hypercube network is widely used …

Design And Development Of Flexible Manufacturing Cells - A Case Study, Behrouz Barzani May 1993

Design And Development Of Flexible Manufacturing Cells - A Case Study, Behrouz Barzani

Theses

This paper covers the typical ills of American manufacturing companies and provides steps to selecting a flexible manufacturing cell(s) or system as a remedy. For that reason various definition of different types of flexibilities in manufacturing and the interrelationships between the several types have been examined. In addition, their purposes, means of obtaining them and some measurement and evaluations has been discussed. This was done to cover the basic but necessary requirements for understanding and selecting a flexible manufacturing system. Finally, the design process of a flexible system and its intuitive justification were discussed.
