Ebenezer Don Carlos Bassett: A Biographical Sketch Of America's First African-American Diplomat, Wilma Dockett-Mcleod

Theses

History often times reflects the significance of persons only if they have had an impact on the many. These persons include states persons, presidents, Nobel Laureates, writers, artists and others who have left their mark on society. Yet, many persons of note are often times disregarded for reasons unknown. Ebenezer Don Carlos Bassett is one of the discarded people whose significance proved to be a first for people of African-American ancestry. Bassett was the first of his race to be appointed to a diplomatic post by the United States Government. He served as Minister Resident and Consul General to Haiti …

A Multi-Dimensional Model Of Passive Mesfets For Use In Non-Linear Microwave Signal Processing, Roger Dorval Jan 1994

A Multi-Dimensional Model Of Passive Mesfets For Use In Non-Linear Microwave Signal Processing, Roger Dorval

Theses

A multi-dimensional model which accurately predicts device non-linearities over frequency and power has been developed for MESFETs used in a passive configuration in microwave signal processing applications.

Historically, MESFETs have been used in linear control applications as passive microwave switches and attenuators. More recently, MESFETs operated as passive elements have been employed as power-sensitive non-linear transfer function generators to produce limiters, phase shifters, and linearizers. These devices offer simplicity, high performance, and the opportunity for application in MMIC technology.

This thesis deals with a mapping of passive MESFET non-linear characteristics, and provides insight into the causes of non-linearity in MESFETs …

The Effects Of Different Types Of Noise On Human Heart Rate, Jose R. Fabregas Jan 1994

The Effects Of Different Types Of Noise On Human Heart Rate, Jose R. Fabregas

Theses

In an industrial environment, chronic noise exposure is assumed to affect human heart rate. If this is true, people who are more sensitive to noise will run a higher risk of incurring cardiovascular diseases.

Sixteen healthy experimental subjects, all with normal hearing, eight males and eight females, were exposed to five different types of pink and white noise at 60, 70, 80, and 85 dBA in order to determine if any relationship exists between the heart rate and sex. Each individual was exposed for a maximum of thirty seconds for each type and level of noise. Audiometric tests were given …

A Thermoelastic Model Applied To Stress Control In Laser Heating Of Ceramics, Jeff Alexander Wagner Jan 1994

A Thermoelastic Model Applied To Stress Control In Laser Heating Of Ceramics, Jeff Alexander Wagner

Theses

Localized laser heating is widely used in materials processing. In extending these techniques to materials with relatively low thermal conductivities and ductilities such as ceramics and glasses, existing methods must be modified to control the high thermal stresses which are associated with the localized heating of these materials. Thermal profiles must be designed to minimize damage to regions adjacent to the processed area. To achieve this with single beam sources the power and radius can be varied in time, or the beam can be moved across the surface in a programmed pattern to achieve the desired thermal profile.

In this …

The Individual Investor : Investment Objectives, Strategies, And Tactics, Clive Walcott Jan 1994

The Individual Investor : Investment Objectives, Strategies, And Tactics, Clive Walcott

Theses

The individual investor's circumstances and investment behavior have received relatively little attention since it was discovered in the late sixties that he was withdrawing as a direct participant in the American equities market. The first major response to this withdrawal phenomenon was the 1974 Individual Investor Research Project (IIRP). For the first time, the individual investor's circumstances and decision processes were examined directly and not through broad-based trading statistics or portfolio simulations.

This current survey identifies the significant changes in investment objectives, strategies, and tactics since the IIRP. These changes were discovered when seven demographic variables were cross-classified with various …

Polarimetric Fiber Optic Weigh-In-Motion Sensor, Jieping Wang Jan 1994

Polarimetric Fiber Optic Weigh-In-Motion Sensor, Jieping Wang

Theses

During the past decade, the demand for new methods of measuring the weight of moving vehicles has grown substantially. In the 1980's, several techniques for weighing vehicles in motion were developed. However, they often suffer from high installation and maintenance costs as well as low accuracy. This thesis describes a new technique based on polarization preserving optical fibers. A fibercore HB600 Bow-Tie fiber with an initial beat length of 1.16 mm was employed in the present study. Sensor response is discussed in terms of the effects of force amplitudes and velocities on the calibration parameter Tf. Tf …

The catalytic oxidation of trichloroethylene and dichloromethane in a tubular reactor system was evaluated experimentally as a function of temperature and space velocity. Gas chromatography with electron capture detector and flame ionization detector was used for quantitative analysis of feed and product streams. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to identify all oxidation products. The results indicate that over 99% conversion of trichloroethylene is achieved at …

Numerical Analysis Of One-Dimensional Waves In Generalized Thermoelasticity, Mark J. Gorman Dec 1993

Numerical Analysis Of One-Dimensional Waves In Generalized Thermoelasticity, Mark J. Gorman

Theses

Classical thermoelasticity theory is based on Fourier's Law of heat conduction, which, when combined with the other fundamental field equations, leads to coupled hyperbolic-parabolic governing equations. These equations imply that thermal effects are to be felt instantaneously, far away from the external thermomechanieal load. Therefore, this theory admits infinite speeds of propagation of thermoelastic disturbances. This paradox becomes especially evident in problems involving very short time intervals, or high rates. of heat flux. Since infinite wave speeds are physically unrealistic in some situations, and since experiments have shown the existence of wavetype thermoelastic interactions, like in the observation of thermal …

Upgrading Biological Treatment Of Wastewater At Dubai’S Plant By A Fixed-Film System, Rashid Ahmed Bin-Fahad

Theses

The wastewater treatment plant in Dubai, with a design capacity of 130,000 m3/d, receives primarily domestic wastewater and employs primary, secondary and tertiary stages of treatment to produce an effluent suitable for reuse in irrigation. Performance of the plant is influenced to a great extent by the success of the secondary aerobic biological treatment stage. This stage comprises the high-rate activated sludge system for removal of carbonaceous organics followed by the biofilter system for removal of nitrogenous material by nitrification. Operational problems have often been experienced at this plant because of increasing sludge solids production and sludge rising …

Reliability Analysis Of Triple Modular Redundancy System With Spare, Khalid A. Al-Kofahi Dec 1993

Reliability Analysis Of Triple Modular Redundancy System With Spare, Khalid A. Al-Kofahi

Theses

Hardware redundant fault-tolerant systems and the different design approaches are discussed. The reliability analysis of fault-tolerant systems is usually done under permanent fault conditions. With statistical data suggesting that up to 90% of system failures are caused by intermittent faults, the reliability analysis of fault-tolerant systems must concentrate more on this class of faults. In this work, a reconfigurable Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) with spare system that differentiates between permanent and intermittent faults has been built. The reconfiguration process of this system depends on both the current status of its modules and their history. Based on this, a different approach …

Diamonds In The Rough: A Journey Of Human Spirituality, Holly Lynn Hoover Nov 1993

Diamonds In The Rough: A Journey Of Human Spirituality, Holly Lynn Hoover

Theses

The purpose of my thesis was to express various aspects of human spirituality using sculpture as the vehicle for this expression. During the course of my exploration clay and glass each came to take on special metaphorical significance and it became crucial to include both materials within the sculptures. I wanted to create a "marriage of materials" wherein the clay and glass needed each other to make a complete statement. Various clay surfaces and glass processes were explored and will be described later.

Docutech Open Job Submode Simulation, Lisa Bickerstaff Nov 1993

Docutech Open Job Submode Simulation, Lisa Bickerstaff

Theses

What does computer-based training (CBT) have in common with art? Artists have always striven to produce artwork under various constraints and conditions. Trying something new was considered a rebellion and artists were often criticized. Through the ages, artists have had to overcome many obstacles, including exploring the limitations presented by their chosen media. Building a visual interface for a computer in the past was left to the programmer. At the time this was acceptable, because only a programmer would look at it. Today, almost everybody uses a computer and appealing graphics are a must. The programmer from the past cannot …

Using Measured Photography To Obtain Optimal Results From Ccd Color Scanners, David L. Milburn Nov 1993

Using Measured Photography To Obtain Optimal Results From Ccd Color Scanners, David L. Milburn

Theses

With the advent of desktop color scanners in the electronic prepress production environment, quality in color separations from transmissive originals has become erratic. The cause of this fluctuation is, in part, due to the transition from PMT to CCD-based scanning technology. Whereas, PMT scanners tend to have a broad dynamic range, that of CCD scanners is more limited. This characteristic adversely affects the quality of color separations by causing additional tone compression. An original transparency typically has a shadow density of 3.00 and a diffused highlight density of 0.30 for an overall density range of 2.70. On a four-color heatset …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Percentage Area Coverage And Ink Film Trapping, Daniel Garcia Nov 1993

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Percentage Area Coverage And Ink Film Trapping, Daniel Garcia

Theses

An investigation of the relationship between percentage underneath area cover age and ink film trapping is presented. It is common knowledge that an ink generally adheres better to the paper than to a wet ink. This is known as undertrapping. To avoid this problem, printers set a limit for the total area coverage to be printed on the press sheet. The problem is that no formal study has been done to find the optimum point at which the limit should be set. The investigation addresses the issue of total area coverage from a trap ping point of view. This presents …

A Study Of Techniques To Improve The Effective Resolution Of Thematic Mapper Thermal Infrared Imagery, Ranjit Bhaskar

Theses

This work is a study of existing and proposed approaches to improve the effective resolution of the thermal band of a multispectral image. Frequency domain filtering, magnitude and phase merging, and adaptive least squares approaches were implemented. Those techniques that utilized the inherent correlation between bands appeared to show the most promise. A two step procedure combining the point-by-point merging technique with a regional replacement filter generated the best results.
