Birefringent Fibre Ring Resonators: Analysis And Stabilization Techniques, S. Anantha Narayanan Jan 1994

Birefringent Fibre Ring Resonators: Analysis And Stabilization Techniques, S. Anantha Narayanan

Theses

The polarization stability of single-mode fibre resonators has been recognized as a potential problem in their operation. One method to overcome the polarization drift is to use a polarization-maintaining optical fibre, in the resonator system. Even this kind of resonators, still suffer from environmentally-induced polarization instabilities. Depending on the type of resonator, these instabilities are manifest as a split resonant dip, reduced finesse, reduced fringe modulation, fringe asymmetry, and unequal spacing between successive fringes. If we assume that a non zero amount of polarization crosstalk at the coupler is inevitable, then there is only one ideal type of resonator which …

Analysis Of Deterministic Chaotic Signals, William Robertson Jan 1994

Analysis Of Deterministic Chaotic Signals, William Robertson

Theses

The prediction of a single observable time series has been achieved with varying degrees of success. The quality and duration of the prediction is dependent on many factors, the two most important being the reconstruction technique and the quantity of data. The goal of this work is to reduce the computational effort required to achieve satisfactory predictions. Without new methods, which are beyond the scope of this work, this requires a reduction in the size of the data set.

This thesis expands on earlier works using the delay vector space method and the autocorrelation function for reconstruction and applies this …

The Dark Side Of Desktop: Detection And Prevention Of Forgery And Counterfeiting In The Age Of Desktop Publishing, Philip Lynn Potts

Theses

This thesis project explores the ways in which new printing and desktop publishing technologies can be used in the forgery and counterfeiting of security documents, and how much protection certain security features provide against the tools of electronic publishing. For the purposes of this project, a security document is defined as any document of value with built-in features meant to discourage counterfeiting and facilitate limited reproduction. Possible countermeasures used to identify and defeat forgeries are also discussed. To accomplish this, a variety of means are used such as color copiers, scanners, conventional photocopiers, and desktop publishing computers and software.

The …

Replacing A Disposable Shipping Container With A Reusable Packaging System For A Supplier Electronic Assembly, Allen Perry Jan 1994

Replacing A Disposable Shipping Container With A Reusable Packaging System For A Supplier Electronic Assembly, Allen Perry

Theses

The following document will explore the topic of source reduction in packaging design. The study will compare a disposable package for an electronic motor assembly with a reusable packaging system for the same part. This project will provide a model for quantifying packaging source reduction when comparing a disposable package design to a reusable one. The results show that significant source reduction can be accomplished if a reusable system is implemented. Source reduction will also achieve significant cost savings if the costs are calculated over several years.

A Study To Determine The Optimum Closure Torque Specification For A Variable Speed Packaging Line, Curtis Brown Jan 1994

A Study To Determine The Optimum Closure Torque Specification For A Variable Speed Packaging Line, Curtis Brown

Theses

The purpose of this study is to develop a specification for closure torques that can be used on a production line. The specification must assure that torque will remain adequate to effect a leak free seal while resulting in an ultimate removal that can be achieved by the consumer without difficulty. The challenging aspect of this study is the complexity introduced by using two closure colorants, two distinctly different product formulations, and a capping mechanism that operates at a variable speed of up to three hundred bottles per minute. The research and testing involves dimensional evaluation of bottles and closures, …

A Dynamic Model To Study The Influence Of Alpine Ski Boot Characteristics On Heel Retention Force, Elizabeth T. Hsiao Jan 1994

A Dynamic Model To Study The Influence Of Alpine Ski Boot Characteristics On Heel Retention Force, Elizabeth T. Hsiao

Theses

A dynamic model representing an alpine ski boot under a forward leaning load was successfully developed. This model was based on the equations of motion for the defined system. The intent of this model was to provide an initial, first order investigation of the effect of variations in boot design. Specifically, it evaluated the influence of certain boot characteristics on the vertical heel force on the boot when it is captured in a conventional toe-heel ski binding. Boot stiffness, sole length, functional boot height, and initial forward lean angle were the chosen characteristics. Functional boot height refers to a distance …

Dynamic Stability Of A Self-Excited Elastic Beam, Francisco L. Ziegelmuller Jan 1994

Dynamic Stability Of A Self-Excited Elastic Beam, Francisco L. Ziegelmuller

Theses

An elastic cantilever beam under pressure contact with a moving web undergoes self-excited vibration that may lead to unstable and even self destructive behavior. The equations of motion for the system are derived from the principle of virtual work and Hamilton's principle using the techniques of the calculus of variations. The beam, being a continuum with infinite degrees of freedom, is approximated by a model with a finite number of degrees of freedom using Galerkin's method. The characteristic equation for the model is examined to determine its dynamic criterion for stability. A parametric study is performed to determine the effects …

Multicorrelation Analysis And State Space Reconstruction, David J. Smario Jan 1994

Multicorrelation Analysis And State Space Reconstruction, David J. Smario

Theses

Constructing a mathematical model of a nonlinear system involves developing methods for determining a set of nonlinear differential equations. Based on Floris Takens' theory, the delayed-time space with a given time-series is created, where the first inflection of multicorrelation function is an approximation of the optimal delay time. The multicorrelation function is the generalization of the autocorrelation function into a higher dimension of the system. The standard Grassberger-Proccia algorithm computes the correlation dimension of an artificially generated data set, which involves measuring the distances between all pairs of points, and estimates the dimensionality of the nonlinear system. Finally, the governing …

Attitudes Toward Giving Quality Service: A Comparison Between Las Vegas & Windsor Casino Employees, Michael A. Altman Jan 1994

Attitudes Toward Giving Quality Service: A Comparison Between Las Vegas & Windsor Casino Employees, Michael A. Altman

Theses

It is the hypothesis of this study that Ontario's first casino in Windsor will not measure up and be as successful as the Las Vegas casinos. One possible reason is the Windsor management may hire personnel who do not have strong, positive attitudes toward giving service. Certainly, as Las Vegas personnel are the very model service providers and while much of their service delivery quality may be related to the culture and norms of the organization, its training and recognition programs, it is also possible the individuals they hire may have different basic attitudes toward service. This study will compare …

Suppression Of The Transient Response In Linear Time-Invariant Systems, Timothy P. Landschoot Jan 1994

Suppression Of The Transient Response In Linear Time-Invariant Systems, Timothy P. Landschoot

Theses

Steady-state solutions represent the long-term response of linear systems due to specified input signals. The total response is initially contaminated with transients, which disguise the long-term/operating response of a system. Except for certain ideal cases, even in systems of low dimension, the steady-state solution is typically obtained by simulation of the system until the transient part of the response is sufficiently negligible. This investigation elaborates on a method of determining the initial conditions that spontaneously give rise to steady-state solutions of forced linear differential equations. The method is applicable to stable, as well as non-stable systems, of any order.

Analysis Of Nydec Guidelines For Extended Detention Basins: Effectiveness In Water Quality Improvement In Western And Central New York, Karlene Thomas Jan 1994

Analysis Of Nydec Guidelines For Extended Detention Basins: Effectiveness In Water Quality Improvement In Western And Central New York, Karlene Thomas

Theses

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) has recently issued guidelines for stormwater management. One widely utilized management practice is the extended detention basin wherein improved water quality is achieved through sedimentation. NYDEC recommends these be designed so that the volume of storm runoff detained is equivalent to the first flush, defined as the first V of runoff or runoff from a 1-year, 24 hour storm event, whichever is greater, from all land areas for which the perviousness has been changed. It also suggests a minimum detention time of 24 hours. This thesis establishes if these generic criteria, …

Light Emission From Silicon, Frederick Seiferth Jan 1994

Light Emission From Silicon, Frederick Seiferth

Theses

The electrochemical etching of crystalline silicon in hydrofluoric acid based solutions has been found to produce a porous layer, termed porous silicon (PS), which is found to exhibit photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) in the visible region. While the luminescence mechanism is the subject of much debate, the potential for this material is enormous as it could usher in a new generation of silicon-based optoelectronic devices. An electrolytic cell capable of producing luminescent layers of porous silicon over large area silicon wafers has been designed and fabricated. The stability of the PL of PS after subjection to standard microelectronic processing …

Multivariate Granulometry And Its Application To Texture Segementation, Mark Rzadca Jan 1994

Multivariate Granulometry And Its Application To Texture Segementation, Mark Rzadca

Theses

Morphological granulometries were conceived by Matheron for the purpose of analyzing images with respect to shape and size of elementary granular components. In particular, granulometric analysis has proven useful in the analysis and identification of textures. Morphological granulometries are filter sequences that measure the residual area after each iteration of the filter. Every component of the filter's structuring element set is dilated for each iteration of the filter and the area resulting from the union of the morphological openings of the original image produces a function of a single variable, the iteration index. If the n components of the structuring …

Color In Computing, Thomas G. Leahy Jan 1994

Color In Computing, Thomas G. Leahy

Theses

Color in the computing environment, once considered a luxury, is becoming more available compared to being just the occasional exception. As the number of users exploring the uses of color through displayed and printed images increases, the problems associated with its use are becoming widely known. What worked in black and white is not easily translated into color. The use of color needs to begin with the basic understanding of what is color, its terminology and its utilization as an enhancement to communications tool. Only after the basic terminology and effective means of communication are understood will color flourish as …

Knowledge Based Text Indexing And Retrieval Utilizing Case Based Reasoning, Alan Mick Jan 1994

Knowledge Based Text Indexing And Retrieval Utilizing Case Based Reasoning, Alan Mick

Theses

Information retrieval systems for documents normally rely on the use of keywords that describe the text in some fashion or another, or are contained in the text itself, for indexing and searching. These keywords may be associated with standard boolean operators, where presence or absence in the text or text description is used as the truth value, or other oper ators indicating their proximity to one another in the text. Another emerging approach is the use of content or knowledge based indexing and retrieval. In this approach the text is not represented or treated as a collection keywords, rather its …

A Computational Package For The Evaluation Of Centrifugal Turbopumps, Albert Knebel Jan 1994

A Computational Package For The Evaluation Of Centrifugal Turbopumps, Albert Knebel

Theses

Future space missions will require reusable engine platforms which in some instances will necessitate deep-engine throttling thrust capability. This is accomplished through the off-design operation of the engine fuel pumps. At off-design conditions, there are additional losses associated with centrifugal turbopump operation, leading to inefficiencies and poor pump performance. Future turbopump designs will incorporate various design changes/innovations to address these inefficiencies. Therefore a means to accurately evaluate proposed designs over extended operating ranges is required. The Centrifugal Pump Analysis Code (CPAC) provides this means. CPAC is a one-dimensional meanline analysis code which provides design and off-design performance predictions based on …

Theses

Prolog has been widely recognized as a powerful programming language for artificial intelligence. It was also chosen as a kernel language for the Japanese Fifth Generation Project. The project is a large scale effort to initiate a new generation of computing. Due to the wide range of applications that Prolog has, many methods have been developed for extracting parallelism from standard Prolog in order to achieve faster execution on a multiprocessor. This project designs an execution model for Prolog, which attempts to exploit the parallelism mainly at the argument level through the unification operation. The model consisting of a number …

Oxygen Permeation Of Virgin Hdpe Films Versus Recycled Hdpe Films, Tareq Al-Ati Jan 1994

Oxygen Permeation Of Virgin Hdpe Films Versus Recycled Hdpe Films, Tareq Al-Ati

Theses

In an attempt to confront consequences of the growing municipal solid waste stream, recycling has become one of the logical, successful, and practical solutions. With the expanding food and plastics industries, the proposition of using post-consumer materials in food-contact applications may be justifiable. However, for the recycling "cause" to succeed, its technologies and products have to fulfill the standards and requirements set forth by the parties involved: food and plastics industries, recyclers, FDA, to name few. In this study, 100% post-consumer HDPE films are found to have the same oxygen permeability as virgin HDPE films. Gas chromatography has been used …

Introduction Of An Information Feedback Loop To Enhance The Urban Transportation Modeling System, Kyle B. Winslow Jan 1994

Introduction Of An Information Feedback Loop To Enhance The Urban Transportation Modeling System, Kyle B. Winslow

Theses

The Urban Transportation Modeling System (UTMS) is a methodology used to estimate urban travel demand. This demand is measured as the volume of traffic that flows through a system of streets and highways. Through the use of traffic assignment software, parts of UTMS have become automated. One of the newest automated processes is the extraction of a subarea from a larger model. This extraction process is important to the local planner because it maintains a linkage from the regional model to the local model and it allows the user to extract an already distributed trip table rather than building one …
