Asic Design Of An Iir Digital Filter: Using Mentor Graphics Dsp Station Tools, Robert Panek May 1995

Asic Design Of An Iir Digital Filter: Using Mentor Graphics Dsp Station Tools, Robert Panek

Theses

Automation in VLSI design is a powerful way to simplify the VLSI layout process and will allow for faster time to market for integrated circuit designs. One means of automation is VHDL, a hardware description language for integrated circuit designs. A structured VHDL description can be used to describe the hardware design at the logic-gate level, and automated software is available that will use this gate-level design to generate the VLSI layout. A more recent type of automation occurs at a level above this. The Mentor Graphics DSP Station tools use a high-level algorithmic description to generate the gate-level VHDL …

Investigation Of Inertia Controlled Bubble Departure Mechanism In Subcooled Flow Boiling Using High Speed Photography, Viktor R. Mizo

Theses

A summary of important theoretical models available for bubble growth and departure behavior in flow boiling is presented. Experimental bubble growth rate curves under sub-cooled flow boiling conditions are obtained in the Thermal Analysis Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology utilizing high-speed photography. The effects of flow rate, sub-cooling, heater surface temperature, and cavity size are investigated, and specific trends observed in the bubble growth rate behavior are discussed. The growth rates in flow boiling are compared with the ones for pool boiling, and a need for an improved model for predicting bubble growth …

A Vhdl Model Of A Digi-Neocognitron Neural Network For Vlsi, Troy Brewster May 1995

A Vhdl Model Of A Digi-Neocognitron Neural Network For Vlsi, Troy Brewster

Theses

Optical character recognition is useful in many aspects of business. However, the use of conventional computers to provide a solution to this problem has not been very effective. Over the past two decades, researchers have utilized artificial neural networks for optical character recognition with considerable success. One such neural network is the neocognitron, a real-valued, multi-layered hierarchical network that simulates the human visual system. The neocognitron was shown to have the capability for pattern recognition despite variations in size, shape or the presence of deformations from the trained patterns. Unfortunately, the neocognitron is an analog network which prevents it from …

The Ritual Of Painting, Allen Vaughan Fowler Apr 1995

The Ritual Of Painting, Allen Vaughan Fowler

Theses

My thesis began to coalesce in the Spring of 1994 when I stretched my first triptych based on the golden mean and produced my first large landscape (Figure 1). I decided upon a title for the series, Dusk Informs Our Designs (D.I.O.D.), that functioned on several levels: as dusk is a period of shifting light, it is a time which informs through shadows and filtered light our manifest designs (patterns or motifs); simultaneously, it is a time which can obscure the clarity of imposed structures and divisions, thus informing the often less obvious nature of our designs (intentions or schemes); …

The Effect Of Environment On Latent Image Formation And Stability, Sean O'Toole Apr 1995

The Effect Of Environment On Latent Image Formation And Stability, Sean O'Toole

Theses

This thesis uses an unsensitized emulsion and two chemically sensitized emulsions to investigate the effect of oxygen and water vapor on latent-image formation and stability. At exposure times that cause little or no low-intensity reciprocity failure, vacuum treatment of an emulsion can result in photographic speeds significantly lower than those found in a humidified environment. This is presumably due to competition between internal desensitization sites and surface electron traps for conduction-band electrons. Storage of a latent image in a humidified air environment will induce a speed loss in some emulsions. The unsensitized emulsion was most sensitive to environmental factors while …

Time, So Pak Mar 1995

Time, So Pak

Theses

"There is nothing more entertaining than to have a frank talk with yourself. Few do it - frankly. Educating yourself is getting acquainted with yourself." " - Robert Henri In structuring my thesis, I have decided that the best format to follow would be one of a free-flowing dialogue with myself. This is the approach I take to making my paintings, and I feel that only through such an open-ended inquiry, will I be able to solidify and transcribe some of my inner thoughts onto paper.

Positive Reinforcement Versus Aversive Therapy Techniques When Dealing With Tantrum Behaviors Of Mentally Retarded Individuals, Cynthia A. Simmons

Theses

This thesis examines the comparative effectiveness of positive reinforcement and aversive therapy techniques in managing tantrum behaviors among mildly mentally disabled adults residing in group homes in Marshall, Missouri. The study involved twenty-one participants, ages thirty-one to sixty, who regularly exhibited tantrum behaviors. Data were collected from historical records spanning 1992–1994, as well as from ongoing observations during the research period. Six trained staff members documented the frequency, duration, and responses to both therapeutic approaches.

Positive reinforcement techniques included verbal praise, token economies, and the Premack principle, while aversive methods consisted of ignoring behaviors, time-out procedures, scolding, and overcorrection. The …

Mechanism Of Inhibitation Of Human Leukocyte Elastase By Benzisothiazolinone-1,1-Dioxides, Catherine Franke Mar 1995

Mechanism Of Inhibitation Of Human Leukocyte Elastase By Benzisothiazolinone-1,1-Dioxides, Catherine Franke

Theses

Benzisothiazolinone- 1,1 -dioxides are potent, time-dependent, reversible inhibitors of human leukocyte elastase (HLE) that demonstrate the ability to inhibit HLE catalyzed degradation of insoluble elastin. A stoichiometry of 1.4 to 1.47 equivalents per mole of enzyme indicates that these compounds are efficient inhibitors of HLE. The proposed mechanism of HLE inhibition has been investigated and the data are consistent with acylation of the active site serine followed by elimination of the leaving group to form a reactive sulfonyl imine intermediate. The reactive intermediate can undergo hydration followed by deacylation or it can react with an enzyme nucleophile to form a …

An Interaction In Glass, Jason Berg Feb 1995

An Interaction In Glass, Jason Berg

Theses

This thesis is a conceptual look at the relationship between mankind and nature. Initially this was to be accomplished using blown glass forms in conjunction with fabricated or found objects such as tool or machine parts. This idea eventually evolved into the use of vessels and organic glass forms to achieve the same objectives. There are two major components of this thesis. The first section will explain the concept behind my thesis statement that is a relationship exists between man and nature. It will also be a vague outline showing the stages of thought that lead to me to my …
