Hydrodynamic And Water Quality Modeling Of The Whippany River, John E. Krohn

Theses

The Whippany River is located in northern New Jersey and is a major tributary to the Passaic River System. This waterway accepts a wide variety of wastes from the diverse communities within its watershed. These wastes contribute to a rather complex network of biological, chemical and physical interactions.

The purpose of this study is to develop a water quality model using QUAL2E. This model will be used as a tool to simulate the complex interactions that take place within the river system. The river must he considered from physical, biological and chemical perspectives. A successful model can determine current water …

Effects Of Ergonomic Worksite Changes On Risks For Cumulative Trauma Disorders Of The Upper Body In An Assembly And Press Operation Job, David B. Mahone

Theses

Cumulative trauma of the upper body is associated with a variety of individual and job factors. An effort to optimize the human-hardware interface to minimize cumulative trauma is favored. Workers in a set of jobs had complained about hand/wrist and shoulder discomfort. One job was selected for testing alternate machine controls and worksite layout. Electromyography was used to test muscle activity, and photogoniometry was used to measure posture.

For the group of ten worker-subjects, statistically significant decreases in hand/wrist and shoulder muscle activity were found. A marginal, but significant increase in neck muscle activity was also found. When one subject …

Fundamentals Of Adhesion Of Organic Compounds And Aqueous Cleaning Of Glass And Metal Surfaces : Applications In The Pharmaceutical And Chemical Industries, Michel J. De Ruijter

Theses

In this thesis we studied the physics and chemistry of the adhesion of various classes of organic compounds to glass and stainless steel surfaces, by using diagnostic aqueous cleaning solutions and other techniques. We defined the thermodynamic requirements for aqueous cleaning based on extensive experimental and theoretical work. Novel cleaning diagrams are introduced, based on electrostatic interactions between organic compounds and solid surfaces, to facilitate the design of aqueous cleaning systems. We studied the mass transfer parameters for selected situations. The electrochemical Pourbaix-diagrams were used to explain the effect of hydrogen peroxide added to aqueous solutions and to avoid corrosion …

The Economical Feasibility Of Computer-To-Plate Technology For Use In Magazine Production, Chih-Ming Chen May 1995

The Economical Feasibility Of Computer-To-Plate Technology For Use In Magazine Production, Chih-Ming Chen

Theses

Computer-to-Plate (CTP) technology has been used for newspaper and book production and been proved successful by several print houses. However these publications are mostly printed with less color and advertisments. Therefore, these fit into the niche market of CTP technolo gy. What about magazine production? Since magazine production normally requires more color, more advertisements, higher quality, can we still make profits from this new idea without a resulting loss of quality? State-of-the-art CTP technology is capable of producing high quality images, and large format. The time savings and labor savings are the biggest advantages. In addition to this, side profits …

A Study Of The Preferability Of Desktop Generated Color Separations Over High End Generated Color Separations In Newspaper Printing, Robert Foster May 1995

A Study Of The Preferability Of Desktop Generated Color Separations Over High End Generated Color Separations In Newspaper Printing, Robert Foster

Theses

Over the last decade, newspapers have been compelled to introduce a lot more process color to their pages. This coincides with the introduction of USA Today, but also with the fact that all forms of media, including television and magazines, have become significantly more colorful. There is considerable market pressure on newspapers to be colorful, as well. Continued audience interest and advertising dollars are at stake. This is not a trivial issue. At the same time, newspapers are being admonished to make sure that, if they do introduce color to their pages, then it should be of high quality. Low …

Using Color Management To Automate The Color Reproduction Of 3-D Images Procured Via A Digital Camera/3-D Scanner, Kristl Honda

Theses

The use of digital photography is migrating from the major applications in pho tojournalism to professional studio photography. Traditional service bureaus such as professional photo labs and prepress trade shops are adding digital imaging services to their film-based services. Also, businesses such as advertising agencies and publishers, who traditionally outsource work to service bureaus, are bringing digital imaging services in-house. State of the art imaging technology empowers users with new tools, but does not guarantee that the task of generating accept able image reproductions will be easier. The basic problem in the desktop color prepress environment is that each com …

The Design, Construction, And Implementation Of An Engineering Software Command Processor And Macro Compiler, Jesse Coleman May 1995

The Design, Construction, And Implementation Of An Engineering Software Command Processor And Macro Compiler, Jesse Coleman

Theses

This paper presents the design and construction of a software translator that serves as a foundation, or central engine, around which an entire engineering software system can be constructed. To provide the user with a powerful interface to drive an application, a high-level procedural language similar to FORTRAN or BASIC is integrated into the translator. An application shell was also written to provide the user with an interactive command line environment for using the translator. The translator, language, and application shell together mechanize a programming and command interpreter environment. Users can interactively enter commands from the keyboard or load and …

Electromechanical Surface Damping Combining Constrained Layer And Shunted Piezoelectric Matetrials With Passive Electrical Networks Of Second Order, Carlos Velazquez May 1995

Electromechanical Surface Damping Combining Constrained Layer And Shunted Piezoelectric Matetrials With Passive Electrical Networks Of Second Order, Carlos Velazquez

Theses

An electromechanical surface damping (EMSD) technique is proposed. This technique combines two surface damping methods, the shunted piezoelectric-ceramic damping with the viscoelastic constrained layer damping (CLD). The damping contribution of the shunted piezoelectric intends to enhance the effective frequency range of the CLD. Piezoelectric ceramics provide similar damping characteristics to viscoelastic material when they are shunted with resonant electrical networks. A resonant shunting circuit provides the opportunity of tuning (shifting) the effective damping range of the piezoelectric into an arbitrary frequency, enhancing the damping at the vicinity of such frequency. Also, the EMSD technique proposes the use of a multiple …

A Study Of The Effects Of Child Sexual Abuse, Treatment, And Interventions, Catherine P. Coyle

Theses

The last two decades have seen the topic of child sexual abuse emerge from an issue that was considered rare, or at least uncommon, to one currently viewed as a leading concern of mental health professionals. Public reaction to incest and sexual abuse has changed from one of disbelief to one of active concern. Public awareness and education about the issue of child sexual abuse has developed into a critical area of concern.

Sexual abuse of children is now recognized as a serious mental health problem, both because it is so widespread, and because of increasing evidence of its traumatic …

A Study Of Ellipsoidal Variance As A Function Of Mean Cielab Values In A Textile Data Set, Seth Ansell May 1995

A Study Of Ellipsoidal Variance As A Function Of Mean Cielab Values In A Textile Data Set, Seth Ansell

Theses

An analysis of the variances of a set of colored textile patches, sampled from the Scott-Munsell textile set, relative to their mean values, demonstrated several systematic trends. Overall, the amount of variance in the data as expressed by the shape and the orientation of the ellipsoids was found to be greatest in the L direction. Additionally, the shape and orientation of the ellipsoids was determined to be largely a function of chroma and lightness. No overall correlation was found between the distribution of the ellipsoidal volume and their hue or chroma. However, with exceptions, ellipsoidal volume peaked in patches with …

The Influence Of Locos-Related Oxide Etch On Thin Oxide Leakage In Memory Devices, Rohan Braithwaite May 1995

The Influence Of Locos-Related Oxide Etch On Thin Oxide Leakage In Memory Devices, Rohan Braithwaite

Theses

The influence of oxide etch backs done in LOCOS based isolation technologies on the low level leakage and reliability of tunnel oxide capacitors has been studied. Tunnel oxide structures are part of nonvolatile memory devices such as Flash EEPROMs and are critical to their overall performance. Locos isolated, area and edge intensive capacitors with 94 A tunnel oxide have been manufactured and tested. Test results indicate that the extent of the etch back and the use of HF instead of buffered HF as chemical etchants do not adversely affect the low level leakge of the tunnel capacitors. However, oxide endurance …

Preparation Of Enzyme - Analyte Conjugates Containing Linker Arms, Tong Zhu

Theses

In this study, we are examining the effect of the length and polarity of peptide linker arms on the performance of enzyme - analyte conjugates in a reagentlimited heterogeneous immunoassay which utilizes a solid phase format. In our model system, our goal is to attach benzoylecgonine, the primary urinary metabolite of cocaine, to glucose oxidase by a series of peptide linker arms. Peptide linker arms were synthesized using the fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) solid phase peptide synthesis strategy described by Stewart and Young (1). We attached the BEC to the exposed amino - terminal end of the peptide linker arm by the …

A Cmos Monolithic Analog Multiplier With Wide Input Dynamic Range, George Anthony Hadgis May 1995

A Cmos Monolithic Analog Multiplier With Wide Input Dynamic Range, George Anthony Hadgis

Theses

A novel CMOS monolithic analog multiplier capable of operating in two quadrants is described in this thesis. The multiplier incorporates a voltage-controlled variable linear resistor comprised of two FET transistors in the feedback network of an operational amplifier. This novel approach to implementing an analog multiplier results in good linearity and wide input dynamic range when compared to other implementations where an FET is incorporated in the feedback network of an operational amplifier. The analog multiplier, comprised of an operational amplifier and a variable linear resistor, has been designed. PSpice simulation results are given in support of the multiplier. Experimental …

The Transient Response Of Heat Exchangers, David Bunce May 1995

The Transient Response Of Heat Exchangers, David Bunce

Theses

The transient response of heat exchangers to a change in inlet temperature of one of the fluids is of much interest in industrial practice. Due to the complexity of the problem, no generally accepted solutions exist. This thesis presents an extensive survey of major solutions available in literature and identifies the ranges of parameters for which solutions are not available. A commercially available thermal network solver software package (Thermonet) will be used to model the transient response of heat exchangers. The software package will be verified using five existing solutions found in literature. The software package will be utilized to …
