Tantalum Oxide Thin Films For Microelectronic Applications, Fang-Xing Jiang Oct 1995

Tantalum Oxide Thin Films For Microelectronic Applications, Fang-Xing Jiang

Theses

There is a critical demand for new dielectric films having higher dielectric constants, higher dielectric strengths and lower leakage currents for applications such as charge storage capacitors for DRAMs in ULSI and low-inductance decoupling capacitors for the control of simultaneous switching noise (SSN) in high-speed switching ULSI chips. Among these candidates for insulators, tantalum pentoxide has received considerable attention. As earlier as in the 1960's, tantalum oxide has been used as the dielectric in discrete capacitors. Recently, several papers have been reported on the electrical properties of Ta205 films grown by various techniques. It has been reported that the electrical …

These operations are of interest to scientific, as well as other applications where high-speed database search, merge, and sort operations are necessary and frequent. Therefore, their efficient implementation on parallel computers should be a worthwhile objective. Parallel algorithms are presented in this thesis for the implementation of these operations on the NET TurboNet system, an in-house built experimental parallel computer with TMS320C40 Digital Signal Processors interconnected in a 3-D hypercube structure. The first algorithm considered is selection. It involves finding the k-th …

A Study Of Settlement In Landfills Due To Biodegradation, Michael Guasconi Oct 1995

A Study Of Settlement In Landfills Due To Biodegradation, Michael Guasconi

Theses

Finding new space for landfills is difficult due to land availability, stringent environmental regulations, and public sentiment. So other means of waste disposal, such as hauling it to a distant landfill, or incinerating it, will have to be resorted to. These methods may be unpopular with the public involved. By studying settlement due to biodegradation, ways to increase settlement can be found, allowing for additional waste disposal capacity in operating, and closed landfills.

Existing theoretical models are based on rheological concepts, not on biodegradation. So, they do not realistically model settlement. In this study, a model to determine the rate, …

Synthesis Of Boron Nitride/Vycor Composite Membrane Structures By An Optimized Lpcvd Process, Chenna Ravindranath

Theses

Since the advent of the idea of ultrafiltration, microporous membranes have come through a long way in establishing a niche as an efficient technology for gas separation applications. More and more research is aimed at reducing pore size towards nanolevels, when separation factor is the criterion rather than the permeability. This work is focused at synthesizing and characterizing microporous inorganic membranes for gas separations by molecular sieving. BN was deposited on mesoporous vycor tubes using triethylamine borane complex (TEAB) and ammonia as precursors. Effect of temperature and deposition geometry on permeability of various gases has been studied. Very high selectivities …

Effectiveness Of Sediment Control Structure : Reducing Nonpoint-Source Pollution Entering A Rural Housing Development Lake In Mercer County, Pennsylvania, Elaine K. Brenner

Theses

For the past two decades, water quality of both natural and man-made lakes has been a major environmental concern. Numerous studies suggest that land use patterns and/or storm water runoff are major factors in nutrient loading and bacterial contamination of freshwater lakes. In 1986, the Property Owners Association at Lake Latonka in Jackson Center, Pa., installed three sediment control structures in an attempt to reduce the amount of nonpoint-source pollution entering the lake. The Association installed a fourth structure in 1988. It has yet to be determined if any improvement in the water quality has occurred due to the control …

Investigation Into Fracture Behavior And Longevity Of Pneumatically Fractured Fine-Grained Formations, Heathe Ann Hall Oct 1995

Investigation Into Fracture Behavior And Longevity Of Pneumatically Fractured Fine-Grained Formations, Heathe Ann Hall

Theses

This study investigates volume changes in fine-grained soil formations and their effect on pneumatically induced fractures. Pneumatic fracturing is an enhancement technology for in situ remediation of hazardous waste sites, which increases the formation permeability by creating fractures. A number of formation properties and environmental conditions which affect fracture aperture were identified in this study.

Laboratory experiments were performed with control devices to investigate idealized fracture flow under linear and radial flow geometries. These tests exhibited cubic law behavior, and gas compressibility was seen as a measurable effect. A horizontal infiltrometer device was successfully developed to induce and control volume …

Reverse Osmosis As A Pretreatment Of Ion Exchange Equipment At Pse & G'S Hudson Generation Station, Steven Leon Oct 1995

Reverse Osmosis As A Pretreatment Of Ion Exchange Equipment At Pse & G'S Hudson Generation Station, Steven Leon

Theses

Public Service Electric and Gas Company's Hudson Generating Station has historically had problems providing sufficient high quality water for its two once through, supercritical design boilers. The station requires over 60 million gallons annually to compensate for system losses.

The stations' ion exchange demineralizers proved to be costly to operate and overall inefficient in performance. Drawbacks include: short service cycles, periodic contamination of storage tanks due to premature breakthrough, prohibitively high chemical regenerant costs, excessive labor requirements, frequent resin replacement, and overall unreliable plant operations.

A reverse osmosis unit was installed as a pretreatment to the demineralizers to offset these …

Application Of Approximate Graph Matching Techniques For Searching Databases Of Two-Dimensional Chemical Structures, Karen R. Pysniak Oct 1995

Application Of Approximate Graph Matching Techniques For Searching Databases Of Two-Dimensional Chemical Structures, Karen R. Pysniak

Theses

This paper proposes the application of approximate graph matching techniques for best-match searching of two-dimensional chemical structure databases based upon topology. Chemical structures are represented as labeled graphs, each atom a node in the graph and each bond an edge. By inserting; deleting and renaming nodes/edges, one structure may be transformed into another. We define similarity as the weighted sum of the costs of these edit operations. An algorithm for approximating the minimum distance between two graphs based on simulated annealing is applied. Best-match searches are performed utilizing this pre-computed distance information and applying the concepts of triangle inequality to …

Spectroscopic And Sensitometric Studies Of Chemically Produced Silver Clusters, Shilin Guo Oct 1995

Spectroscopic And Sensitometric Studies Of Chemically Produced Silver Clusters, Shilin Guo

Theses

This thesis research uses 0.45 urn octahedral AgBr emulsion to study chemically produced silver clusters. Reduction sensitization has been carried out with DMAB, SnCk, and NaOH. The progress of the reaction has been monitored both with sensitometry and diffuse reflectance spectra of the chemically produced silver clusters. The reflection minimum occurs at about 476 nm, independent of reagent. The absorbency by these clusters, derived from the Kubelka-Munk transform, is related to the concentration of the sensitizing agent. Exposure to light causes a decrease in the absorbency by these silver clusters, indicating that some of the silver clusters are hole traps. …

Neural Network For Optimization Of Binary Computer-Generated Hologram With Printing Model, Guo Li Oct 1995

Neural Network For Optimization Of Binary Computer-Generated Hologram With Printing Model, Guo Li

Theses

Hopfield neural nets are used to optimize point-oriented binary computer-generated holograms (CGHs). It can be considered as a parallel and iterative 'halftoning' process in the spatial frequency domain. The results are comparable to other iterative methods but require shorter computation times. In this process, the generation of the CGH by FFT, binarization, and IFFT is viewed as a "black box" with inputs and outputs consisting of 512 arrays containing an object of size 64 . The neural-network optimization feeds back the Fourier transform of the reconstruction error to update the neuron states, which correspond to the samples of the continuous …
