Simulation Of A Neural Network-Driven Fuzzy Controller, Karl Ver Schneider
Simulation Of A Neural Network-Driven Fuzzy Controller, Karl Ver Schneider
Theses
A software simulation package was developed to facilitate the analysis of a fuzzy logic tracking system constructed by first training a neural network. The adaptive vector quantization neural network used a competitive learning algorithm to classify control data from a controller in a noisy environment. The neural network memory generated rules for a fuzzy controller by mapping the state of the network into a predetermined fuzzy database. The software is intended to be expanded to allow further analysis of neural dynamics and to compare the performance of the resulting fuzzy controller to conventional controllers.

Features And Neural Net Recognition Strategies For Hand Printed Digits, Jeffrey R. Pink
Theses
The thesis goal is to develop a computer system for hand printed digit recognition based on an investigation into various feature extractors and neural network strategies. Features such as subwindow pixel summation, moments, and orientation vectors will be among those investigated. Morphological thinning of characters prior to feature extraction will be used to assess the impact on network training and testing. Different strategies for implementing a multilayer perceptron neural network will be investigated. A high-level language called MatLab will be used for neural network algorithm development and quick prototyping. The feature extractors will be developed to operate on small (less …
Characterization Of Digital Film Scanner Systems For Use With Digital Scene Algorithms, Mark Vernacotola
Characterization Of Digital Film Scanner Systems For Use With Digital Scene Algorithms, Mark Vernacotola
Theses
Digital film scanners have been used in the photographic industry for more than a decade. The existence of digital image data has made possible the use of computer-based scene enhancement algorithms to improve image quality. These algorithms are usually device-dependent, functioning properly only for data generated by one scanner system. The complexity of most enhancement algorithms make them costly to develop, thus device-independent scene enhancement algorithms would be valuable. The computation of mathematical transformations to convert scanner data to a device-independent space is possible. The data created using these transformations should serve as the input for device-independent enhancement algorithms. A …

Theses
This dissertation is presented as an introduction to the theme contained in my present works: The infinite order of chaos. This written work represents my momentary conceptual realization of the theme. I am certain that this realization would continue to evolve into the future., however this paper mutually can only present my current belief and conclusions. There were many times of uncertainty in trying to produce work which would relate to the correspondence between chaos, nature, and mankind. Directly or indirectly. In the journey through the painting process there was both discovery and rediscovery in the forms of technique and …
A Comparison Of The Performance Of Non-Parametric Classifies With Gaussian Maximum Likelihood For The Classification Of Multispectral Remotely Sensed Data, Steven Nessmiller
A Comparison Of The Performance Of Non-Parametric Classifies With Gaussian Maximum Likelihood For The Classification Of Multispectral Remotely Sensed Data, Steven Nessmiller
Theses
This study compares the performance of two non-parametric classifiers and Gaussian Maximum Likelihood (GML) for the classification of LANDSAT TM 30-meter resolution six-band data. The mathematical assumptions made in developing GML are valid if the pixels that constitute the training classes are normally distributed. Since it requires a model of the data, GML is termed a "parametric" classifier. Of current interest are new classification methodologies that make no assumptions about the statistical distribution of the pixels in the training class; these approaches are termed "non-parametric" classifiers. This study will compare the n-Dimensional Probability Density Function (nPDF) essentially a projection technique …
Fundementals Of Digital Imaging, Christian Wittwer
Fundementals Of Digital Imaging, Christian Wittwer
Theses
This thesis project shows that conventional photography and digital imaging are two visual media with very distinct differences: A conventional photograph is a human-readable information entity with an actual physical body in the form of silver clusters or color molecules embedded in gelatin. Silver halide materials have a chemical attribute and are organic, almost "living" organisms affected by heat, moisture, light and pollution, similar as we are. The actual information contained in a photographic image is always overlaid by an unwanted signal called noise. In conventional photography noise becomes visual as graininess. The amount of information in a photographic image …
A Study Of On-Demand Books Made By Pva Cold Emulsion Adhesive, Amit Sharma
A Study Of On-Demand Books Made By Pva Cold Emulsion Adhesive, Amit Sharma
Theses
On-demand binding requires books to be printed and finished in quick turnaround time. In order to serve the on-demand binding market, the binders have the options of hot melt adhesives or cold emulsion adhesives. Cold emulsion adhesive bookbinding has been available in the industry for a long time. In the past few years, this type of binding process was more favorable as compared to hot melt because of its durability, flexibility, and strength. But the process of cold emulsion binding faced a serious drawback of curing time where the bound bookblock requires a minimum of two hrs. of curing time …
State Anxiety Factors With Road Race Competitors, Walter Clayton Davis
State Anxiety Factors With Road Race Competitors, Walter Clayton Davis
Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine any significant relationships between a variety of factors and state anxiety using road race athletes. The factors examined were age, years of racing, expectations, finishing place, and accuracy of expected finish. Sixty eight subjects completed the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), an instrument that measures cognitive state anxiety, somatic state anxiety, and self confidence in a sports setting. Results indicate no significant relationships of gender, distance raced, and accuracy of pre-race expectations with CSAI-2 scores of the runners. Cognitive state anxiety was found to correlate to pre-race expectations (-.27). Self confidence correlated …
The Effect Of Image Content On Color Difference Perceptibility, Susan Farnand
The Effect Of Image Content On Color Difference Perceptibility, Susan Farnand
Theses
Considerable work has been conducted regarding the perceptibility of color differences for simple images such as uniform color patches. From this work comes such tools as the MacAdam ellipses. Less is known regarding color difference perceptibility when complex images are involved. However, the proliferation of desktop publishing equipment and the increasingly technically elegant accompanying software makes questions around this topic both more facile and more relevant to study. The information that could be gleaned may be useful for the design of color printer algorithms or other imaging systems. The objective of this research was to examine the impact of image …

Efficient Vhdl Models For Various Pld Architectures, Vassilis Giannopoulos
Efficient Vhdl Models For Various Pld Architectures, Vassilis Giannopoulos
Theses
VHDL is a flexible language for programming PLDs (Programmable Logic Devices) but the way it is synthesized for different architectures varies. Since there are several types of PLDs and several synthesis tools, it is very important for the designer to know which VHDL model to use for a particular architecture in order to achieve maximum efficiency. The term efficiency refers to a good use of resources that result to a denser fit of the logic design into the PLD with a minimum implementation delay. The choice of the VHDL model also depends on the application and the expectations of the …

Modification And Characterization Of Poly[Styrene-Co-Maleic Anhydride] With Fluorescent Probes, Ronald Difelice
Modification And Characterization Of Poly[Styrene-Co-Maleic Anhydride] With Fluorescent Probes, Ronald Difelice
Theses
In this study, various poly[styrene-co-(maleic anhydride)] copolymers (50/50, 75/25, 86/14, and 92/8) were modified with the 4-nitroaniline and 4-phenylazoaniline dyes. A synthesis, collection, and purification procedure was developed, and the resulting modified polymers were characterized primarily using elemental analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared analysis (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Elemental analysis allowed percent incorporation results to be determined for each copolymer-dye synthesis. Percent incorporation was approximately 70% for the 50/50 copolymers, and 55% for the 75/25 copolymers, with no significant difference between the 4-nitroaniline and the 4-phenylazoaniline modified copolymers. For the 86/14 and 92/8 modified copolymers, however, …

Matched Wavelet Construction And Its Application To Target Detection, Joseph Chapa
Matched Wavelet Construction And Its Application To Target Detection, Joseph Chapa
Theses
This dissertation develops a new wavelet design technique that produces a wavelet that matches a desired signal in the least squares sense. The Wavelet Transform has become very popular in signal and image processing over the last 6 years because it is a linear transform with an infinite number of possible basis functions that provides localization in both time (space) and frequency (spatial frequency). The Wavelet Transform is very similar to the matched filter problem, where the wavelet acts as a zero mean matched filter. In pattern recognition applications where the output of the Wavelet Transform is to be maximized, …

Theses
The intention of this thesis project was to begin an investigation of three dimensional form using the parameters that the utilitarian teapot imposes. Fifteen teapots were constructed for this project using refer ences from such styles as Art Deco, Memphis, and Deconstructivism. To this flavor was added from a blend of nineteen forties science fiction (old Flash Gordon comics), film animation, and sixties pop culture. Why the teapot? The making of teapots pose certain technical and aesthetic problems which engage my intellect, artistic ability, and sense of humor in a exercise that is personally fulfilling. Working in the format of …

Minimum Aberration Two-Level Split-Plot Designs, Peng Huang
Theses
In this thesis a certain aspect of fractionated two-level split-plot designs is associated with a subset of the 2"'k fractional factorial designs. The concept of aberration is then extended to these split-plot designs in order to compare designs. Finally, two methods are presented for constructing two-level minimum aberration split-plot designs.

Application Of Error Diffusion In Fourier Transform Cell-Oriented Holograms To Compensate For Printability Constraints, Ramesh Nagarajan
Application Of Error Diffusion In Fourier Transform Cell-Oriented Holograms To Compensate For Printability Constraints, Ramesh Nagarajan
Theses
Error diffusion is well-known adaptive quantization technique used in halftoning for quantizing data from a larger to a smaller number of gray levels. A method for creating cell-oriented computergenerated holograms using a modified error diffusion approach is proposed. Error diffusion is also a flexible tool for incorporating constraints of the printing device into the calculation of cell-oriented CGHs. The advantage of the proposed scheme is that the printability constraints are not applied in the calculation of the complex wave amplitude, but are incorporated in the subsequent quantization step for the CGH. The robustness of the quantization process has been investigated …
Statistical Spice Parameter Extraction For An N-Well Cmos Process, Scott Hildreth
Statistical Spice Parameter Extraction For An N-Well Cmos Process, Scott Hildreth
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate one method of statistical parameter extraction and show some of the advantages of statistical models. The method of extraction discussed, parameter domain statistics, is ideal for use in the classroom, due to its simplicity and ease of implementation. Another advantage is the minimal statistical knowledge required to understand this process. The test chip design was a modification of the test chip designed by Bert Berends. An N-Well CMOS lot was processed and models extracted using IC-CAP From these models, parameter domain statistics were performed - the model parameters were used to create …

Access And Denial, Jill Oberman
Theses
In creating the body of work for my thesis exhibition, I investigated the themes of personal barriers. The resulting ceramic sculptures explore some of the issues that people encounter as they attempt to establish meaningful connections to one another. Emphasizing the many layers that people possess, and the different ways that these layers can be revealed, I created both wall and pedestal sculptures that examine the many ways that I allow, and sometimes deny, others access to my innermost being. I often surround the important aspects of who I am with layers of protective walls, which act as a barrier …
Temporal Sampling Of Forward Looking Infra-Red Imagery For Sub-Resolution Enhancment Post-Processing, Serge Dutremble
Temporal Sampling Of Forward Looking Infra-Red Imagery For Sub-Resolution Enhancment Post-Processing, Serge Dutremble
Theses
Forward Looking Infra Red (FLIR) and RADAR images are examples of low resolution and inherently noisy images. These images are often very sensitive to weather conditions or imaging system characteristics and are usually difficult to evaluate. Interpretation of such images is often restricted to specialists with many years of experience. We propose a quantitative evaluation of two Post-Processing methods of combining temporally close sequential video FLIR images to produce sub-pixel resolution still images. Although we can conceive many different methods to increase the resolution of a video image, this Thesis studies methods based on subpixel interpolation and subpixel separate sampling. …
A Numerical Optimization Technique For The Design Of Airfoils In Viscous Flows, Robert Macneill
A Numerical Optimization Technique For The Design Of Airfoils In Viscous Flows, Robert Macneill
Theses
The present work involves the implementation of an efficient optimization procedure for the design of airfoils in viscous flows The scope of the work is limited to low Reynolds number, incompressible, and unstalled fluid flow. Cubic Bezier curves with corresponding polygons are employed to define the airfoil, the vertices of which are used as design variables in the optimization process. Inviscid conditions about the airfoil are determined using a traditional Hess-Smith-Douglas panel method. Boundary layer calculations are subsequently made based on the inviscid results and the solution is updated, thereby accounting for viscous effects. A hybrid Generalized Reduced Gradient/Sequential Quadratic …
