Application Of Statistical Techniques In The Evaluation Of Packaging Processes, Mark Harris
Application Of Statistical Techniques In The Evaluation Of Packaging Processes, Mark Harris
Theses
Production processes for packaging components frequently are subject to variation that can result in the manufacture of unusable components. Significant exposure to both the component supplier and the customer is incurred when the production process capability is not established prior to the start of production. "Application of Statistical Techniques in the Evaluation of Packaging Processes" presents a program of statistical tests for problem resolution as well as for the qualification of a new process. Training of manufacturing personnel in the fundamentals is a necessary element to accurately apply and interpret the results. The successful use of statistics requires knowledge of …
Mechanics Of A Shear Cutting Process, Stephen Meissner
Mechanics Of A Shear Cutting Process, Stephen Meissner
Theses
A unique laboratory device, the Laboratory Shear, has been designed and built to simulate and examine the shear angle cutting process, which is the predominant method used in many cutting operations. The device is capable of force and velocity measurements of the shear angle cutting process with the abilities to vary cutting speed, knife preload, and blade geometry. The dimensions of the device are such that mobility to and from conditioning rooms in the laboratory environment are not limited. Assembly and disassembly ease as well as automatic versus manual operation options were incorporated for greater experimental flexibility. The device has …
Design And Process Development Of An Integrated Phosphor Field Emission Device, Robert Langley
Design And Process Development Of An Integrated Phosphor Field Emission Device, Robert Langley
Theses
An Integrated Phosphor Field Emission Device (IPFED) has been fabricated at the Rochester Institute of Technology for the purpose of developing a new, flat panel display technology. The device incorporates a new, cathodoluminescent, thin film phosphor (Ta2Zn308) developed at RIT as an anode. A cathode and control gate, both consisting of a thin layer of molybdenum are also included in the device. Electrons are tunneled from the cathode via Fowler-Nordheim tunneling to energetically strike the phosphor anode. The anode then produces light, via cathodoluminescence, which the human eye can detect. Standard semiconductor processes were utilized in the fabrication of the …

The second half of the thesis is devoted to an experimental measurement of the subpixel spatial variations in solid-state light detectors, namely in a Charge-Coupled Devices (CCD). A specialized high-resolution scanning optical microscope, is described. With the help of …
Factoring Integers Defined By Second And Third Order Recurrence Relations, Kirk Ocke
Factoring Integers Defined By Second And Third Order Recurrence Relations, Kirk Ocke
Theses
Factoring the first two-hundred and fifty Fibonacci numbers using just trial division would take an unreasonable amount of time. Instead the problem must be attacked using modern factorization algorithms. We look not only at the Fibonacci numbers, but also at factoring integers defined by other second and third order recurrence relations. Specifically we include the Fibonacci, Tribonacci and Lucas numbers. We have verified the known factorizations of first 382 Fibonacci numbers and the first 185 Lucas numbers, we also completely factored the first 311 Tribonacci numbers.
Characterization Of Variable Molecular Weight And Alternative Solvent Poly(Methylmethacrylate) Resist Systems For Electron Beam Lithography, Todd Eakin
Theses
Poly(methylmethacrylate), PMMA, resist samples with varying weight average molecular weights and several non-chlorobenzene casting solvents were characterized utilizing. electron beam lithography. Environmental concerns with chlorobenzene have motivated investigation into alternative casting solvents for PMMA resists. Processing effects of variation in the molecular weight of the PMMA resin were unknown and have been quantified. Weight average molecular weights ranging from 539,000 g/mol to 614,000 g/mol were studied in chlorobenzene resist systems. Chlorobenzene, anisole, butyl-acetate, and propylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate solvents were studied in resist systems of constant weight average molecular weight. A three stage screening, optimization, and confirmation experiment was …
Applying A Genetic Algorithm To Improve The Lower Bounds Of Multi-Color Ramsey Numbers, Shardul Rao
Applying A Genetic Algorithm To Improve The Lower Bounds Of Multi-Color Ramsey Numbers, Shardul Rao
Theses
Ramsey Theory studies conditions when a combinatorial object contains necessarily some smaller given objects. The role of Ramsey Numbers is to quantify some of the general existential theorems in Ramsey Theory. The objective of this thesis is to try to improve the lower bounds of Ramsey Numbers, in particular the bounds for multi-color graph Ramsey Numbers. Let Gi,G2,---,Gm be graphs on some n. R(G\,G2, ,Gm) denotes the m-color Ramsey number for graphs, avoiding G, in color i for 1 < i < m. Thus, to show R(G\, G2, . , Gm) > N, we need to find an edge coloring for a Kn graph using m colors (for N as large as possible) …

Theses
This thesis creates a plan for the practical implementation of high-speed communication for residences and businesses. By implementing low-cost, high-speed communication on a global scale, tremendous benefits can occur in areas such as Internet communication, interactive multimedia, telecommuting, and distance learning. Despite several successful trials of various high-speed communication technologies, many barriers remain before deployment can occur to the general public. This thesis proposes a plan to bridge the gap between theoretical test studies and global implementation. This thesis evaluates three communication systems as potential solutions for high-speed communication and selects one system as the solution. The three candidate systems …
Teamwork In Genetic Programming, Michael Lalena
Teamwork In Genetic Programming, Michael Lalena
Theses
This thesis attempts to solve food collection problems using genetic programming. The genetic program will evolve programs that mimic the way ants can collect food and bring it back to a nest. There are two special factors in this genetic program that make the ants work together in order to solve the problem, as opposed to each ant acting on its own. First, there will be a stream in the environment that the ants must cross to get to the food. Although all ants have the same program, some must move into the water and die, building a bridge for …
Comparison Of An Incline Impact Table To Horizontal Impact Table As Used In Representing Pallet Marshaling, Amanda Hoffnung
Comparison Of An Incline Impact Table To Horizontal Impact Table As Used In Representing Pallet Marshaling, Amanda Hoffnung
Theses
This study compared horizontal impact tables to incline impact tables . The hypothesis is that both tables could achieve the same resultant impact. This study proved that this is possible. However, the initial speed at which the table is set, and the type of programmers used on each table effected the resultant impact. A number of trial runs with setting adjustments were necessary before a three mile-per-hour resultant impact was achieved. Once this setting was achieved to create the proper impact, both tables were within a 5% error when thirty consecutive impacts were produced on each table. Reproducibility was achieved …
A Study Of Package Drops In Global Distribution Environment, Donald Appleton
A Study Of Package Drops In Global Distribution Environment, Donald Appleton
Theses
The focus of this study was to compile and interpret drop heights and drop frequencies data for small parcel packages moving through the Eastman Kodak Company global distribution network. The need for this study arose from the inclusion of drop height probability curves into Kodak's shipping tests for packaged product weighing less than 100 lb. Kodak packaging engineers suspected the drop heights included in the probability curves were too high in drop height and too many in frequency when compared to the actual distribution environment. The data for this study resulted from dozens of test shipments using dummy-load packages throughout …
Analyisis Of The Small Parcel Express Carrier Distribuion Envirnonment For Drop Height Statistical Referencing And Development Of Laboratory Test Specifications, Scott Wilson
Theses
The distribution environment is an ever-changing industry. Test specifications used in laboratory testing to protect product transported through various channels of this environment require constant evaluation. A study to monitor the manual handling of the small parcel express carrier distribution environment was undertaken to quantify the dynamics experienced and better ensure confidence of the parameters for laboratory test specifications. Two package designs, differing in weight and size, were analyzed in 158 trips with and without the use of handholds. Significant drop heights, quantity of drops and orientations of these drops were collected using environmental recorders. The data was analyzed statistically …
Moisture Gain Of Biscuits In Hermetically-Sealed Packages Versus Non-Hermetically-Sealed Packages, Amran Alabakan
Moisture Gain Of Biscuits In Hermetically-Sealed Packages Versus Non-Hermetically-Sealed Packages, Amran Alabakan
Theses
The objective of this study was to examine the affect of hermetic sealing on extending the shelf life of a biscuit product. Hermetically sealed packages were compared with non-hermetically-sealed packages received from the biscuit manufacturer. The package materials were the same so the only variable was the hermetic integrity of the package. A pressure test was conducted to determine the hermetic integrity of the package samples. The maximum moisture content that the biscuits gained before they were considered spoiled was then determined. Moisture gain of biscuit products kept in a 100% RH environment was monitored by recording the changes in …
Lived Body Architecture : An Argument For Lived Bodies In Architecture And An Exploration Of Women's Lived Bodies In Society, Sherri A. Scribner
Lived Body Architecture : An Argument For Lived Bodies In Architecture And An Exploration Of Women's Lived Bodies In Society, Sherri A. Scribner
Theses
This thesis is about architecture's current disregard for the lived body and about the lived bodily experiences of women in Western society. Although these seem to be two different themes, they are connected. Architecture disregards the lived body, but it can never escape it. Architects design buildings from their own lived experiences of the world and architectural theorists most often write about architecture from their experience of being in the buildings they discuss. But because architecture has been built and discussed predominantly by men, Western theories of architecture reflect mainly a male interpretation. I begin by analyzing the paradigms of …
Aluminum Nitride Films By Reactive Sputtering, Alvin Randolph
Aluminum Nitride Films By Reactive Sputtering, Alvin Randolph
Theses
Aluminum nitride thin films (-1000 A) have been deposited on silicon substrate by re active sputtering using Al target in 1 : 1 Ar:N2 environment. The atomic force microscopy examination revealed continuous microcrystalline film structure. The Auger electron spectroscopic analysis shows the presence of oxygen in the films. The annealing at 850 C in nitrogen is found to cause recrystallinization and, by FTIR analysis, further oxidation of the films. The films can be characterized as lossy dielectrics with relative permittivity ~ 10, higher than the bulk value of 8.9. Annealing the films is found to reduce anion vacancies and improve …

A Study Utilizing Halftone Based Digital Proofing Systems In The Flexographic Printing Process, William Hanna
A Study Utilizing Halftone Based Digital Proofing Systems In The Flexographic Printing Process, William Hanna
Theses
Contract proofing for printing has been traditionally done by press proofing. This is costly and wasteful, not just in terms of equipment and labor but also in terms of expendables. The advent of off-press proofing was greeted with some degree of uncertainty by the printing industry. With press proofing, the proof was literally a preview of what would happen on a press. The press proof, although often printed on a different press, generally used the same type of inks, plates and substrate that would characterize the final print. With offpress proofing, printers were comparing apples to oranges; instead of comparing …
