This paper presents vibration analyses performed on a diesel engine mounted on a test chassis. Four methods were used in analyzing engine vibrations on the test chassis. Static engine vibration analysis was an experimental method used to identify natural engine frequencies and modes shapes on the test chassis. In this technique, the non-running engine was excited by an external input force. A running engine analysis was used to determine engine resonance frequencies. In this analysis, the engine was excited by the running dynamics of its components. Engine speeds at those resonance frequencies were also determined in this test. Thirdly, lumped …

Student Attitudes Toward Individuals With Disabilities: Inclusive Versus Traditional Classrooms In Elementary School, Heather Young Jan 1997

Student Attitudes Toward Individuals With Disabilities: Inclusive Versus Traditional Classrooms In Elementary School, Heather Young

Theses

In recent years, many schools have begun to include students with disabilities in general education classrooms. Studies on "inclusion," have shown several positive effects for students with and without disabilities. This study examines the self-reported attitudes of 185 elementary school students in inclusive and traditional classrooms, as measured by the Scale of Children's Attitudes Toward Exceptionalities (SCATE). Self-reported attitudes and experiences of general education teachers were also assessed using a survey developed by the researcher. Although statistically significant relationships were found on the SCATE, these were not logical or conclusive. Results of the teacher surveys indicate that teachers of inclusive …

The Effect Of Cyclic Environment On The Compression Strength Of Curtain Coated Corrugated Containers, Paijit Sangchai Jan 1997

The Effect Of Cyclic Environment On The Compression Strength Of Curtain Coated Corrugated Containers, Paijit Sangchai

Theses

Cyclic changes in temperature and humidity in real-life distribution environments decrease BCT and life-span of standard corrugated containers. As a result, BCT obtained from testing at standard TAPPI environment may be inadequate to protect the products inside from damages during real-life distribution. The corrugated containers users need to understand this concept in order to design a proper corrugated containers at a cost-efficient price that can retain BCT in these extreme temperature and humidity changes environments. Wax curtain coating is one of the most commonly used techniques to retain BCT of corrugated containers that are distributed in short-term high humidity environment, …

Multidimensional Subset Sum Problem, Vladimir Kolesnikov Jan 1997

Multidimensional Subset Sum Problem, Vladimir Kolesnikov

Theses

This thesis explores new modifications to the successful LLL approach to solving the Subset Sum problem. This work is an optimization of the matrix representation of an instance. Traditionally, the basis matrix contained only one column with set elements and the sum. In this thesis we suggest having several data columns (thus introducing multidimensionality). This allows us to reduce the size of coulmn entries which changes the complexity of the problem. Splitting the data into multiple columns greatly simplifies the task of solving the Subset Sum problem. However, other problems arise when we try to generate multiple columns. Here we …

Performance characteristics of the I/O board are analyzed for two separate …

Optical Character Categorization: Clustering As It Applies To Ocr, Jennifer Greenwald Jan 1997

Optical Character Categorization: Clustering As It Applies To Ocr, Jennifer Greenwald

Theses

I applied clustering analysis to the problem of creating tagged training data for optical character recognition (OCR). The creation of labeled character data by hand is a slow and cumbersome process. My belief is that clustering methods can be applied to character data before tagging it, allowing the operator to label entire groups of characters at once and greatly speeding the time in which tagged character data can be generated. This thesis will provide proof of concept as a basis for more in depth research and eventually the creation of a sophisticated application utilizing these techniques for the generation of …

A Comparison Of Pattern Classification Techniques For Orienting Chest X-Rays, Martin R. Hoffmann Jan 1997

A Comparison Of Pattern Classification Techniques For Orienting Chest X-Rays, Martin R. Hoffmann

Theses

The problem of orienting digital images of chest x-rays, which were captured at some multiple of 90 degrees from the true orientation, is a typical pattern classification problem. In this case, the solution to the problem must assign an instance of a digital image to one of four classes, where each class corresponds to one of the four possible orientations. A large number of techniques are available for developing a pattern classifier. Some of these techniques are characterized by independent variables whose values are difficult to relate back to the problem being solved. If a technique is highly sensitive to …
