Statistical Analysis Of Lake Ontario Water Levels, Matthew Fetzner Jan 1999

Statistical Analysis Of Lake Ontario Water Levels, Matthew Fetzner

Theses

The regulation of Lake Ontario water level began on April 20, 1960. In recent years, there have been many Lake Ontario residents dissatisfied with the erosion damage to their properties. Many believe that the increase in erosion has been caused by the International St. Lawrence River Board of Control maintaining a water level which is too high. The scope of this thesis was to first identify what the actual change in the lake level has been since regulation began and then to determine how much of this difference could be attributed to regulation and how much should be attributed to …

Embeddability Of Pseudoline Arrangements And Point Configurations To Eucliean Plane, Javid Huseynov Jan 1999

Embeddability Of Pseudoline Arrangements And Point Configurations To Eucliean Plane, Javid Huseynov

Theses

The present thesis explores embeddability (realizability) properties of pseudoline arrangements, perhaps, the most important mathematical structures in computational geometry. The underlying theme is the use of combinatorial representation of arrangements vs. usual geometric representation to approach the embeddability problem. The combinatorial representation chosen is that of counterclockwise systems (CCsystems) introduced by D.E. Knuth in 1992. CC systems were defined as sets of ordered triples of points that incorporate and obey counterclockwise relations on points in the plane. If a CC system can arise from actual points in the plane, it is called realizable. Not all CC-systems are realizable in plane, …

Enterprise Business Objects : Design And Implementation Of A Business Object Framework, Kai-Uwe Schafer Jan 1999

Enterprise Business Objects : Design And Implementation Of A Business Object Framework, Kai-Uwe Schafer

Theses

Software components representing business entities like customer or purchase order introduce a new way of Online Transaction Processing to business applications. Collaborating business objects allow to complete whole business processes as a single distributed transaction, instead of dividing it into queued steps, which sometimes even require user intervention. This IS due to the fact that business objects contain both business data and logic and that they incorporate multiple databases from different vendors and different geographic locations in a single transaction.

Business objects cannot be used as stand-alone components, but require a framework of services that manage persistence, concurrent transactions, and …

Characterisation And Optimisation Of Gypsum Crystallization, Catherine H. Shannon Jan 1999

Characterisation And Optimisation Of Gypsum Crystallization, Catherine H. Shannon

Theses

Gypsum is produced as a by-product during the citric acid production process at ADM Ringaskiddy. The particle size and filterability of the gypsum has a critical bearing on the overall citric acid production rate. Prior to August 1996, research in the area of gypsum crystal optimisation at ADM had concentrated on the application of vortex mixing to perform the gypsum formation reaction. While the gypsum crystals produced with vortex mixing were found to be desirably clear of microcrystalline gypsum, the crystals were considerably smaller and more difficult to filter and wash. This research project sought to retain the advantages conferred …

Extraction And Characterisation Of Essential Oils From Waste Eucalyptus Foliage, Hugh O'Reilly Jan 1999

Extraction And Characterisation Of Essential Oils From Waste Eucalyptus Foliage, Hugh O'Reilly

Theses

Extraction procedures such as steam distillation, solvent and soxhlet extraction have been investigated to determine the most effective method of extracting essential oil from the foliage of a number of species of Eucalyptus cultivated in Co. Kerry. Steam distillation has been found to be the most effective method of extraction. The steam distillation extraction method has been thoroughly studied in order to determine the factors affecting yield and composition of the distillate. Alteration of the distillation time has been found to produce oil high in 1,8-cineole content, a requirement of medicinal quality oil. The choice of individual distillation still used …

The Atomic Force Microscope In The Elucidation Of Leukocyte Abnormality, Derbrenn O'Connor Jan 1999

The Atomic Force Microscope In The Elucidation Of Leukocyte Abnormality, Derbrenn O'Connor

Theses

The aim of this project was to investigate the novel use of the atomic force microscope (AFM) as a technique in the elucidation of leukocyte abnormality. To this end, comparative AFM imaging and elasticity studies were performed on normal and myeloid leukaemic leukocytes.

Initially, an evaluation of techniques for the isolation of specific leukocyte (e.g. lymphocytes, granulocytes, etc.) populations from whole blood or leukocyte concentrates, was carried out. It was found that a silanised glass surface failed to select and immobilise a leukocyte population. However, centrifugation of whole blood in an Isopaque-ficoll gradient solution yielded a viable mixed leukocyte population …

New Polyether Toxins From Shellfish And Marine Phytoplankton: Isolation Studies And Development Of Analytical Methods, Alan G. Bishop

Theses

There are three classes of polyether toxins responsible for Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) world-wide. The causative toxins are okadaic acid (OA) and derivatives (DTXs), pectenotoxins (PTXs) and yessotoxins (YTXs). The origin of these toxins are phytoplankton from Dinophysis or Prorocentrum spp. OA has been demonstrated for most outbreaks in Europe and more recently a new isomer DTX-2 has been reported in Ireland.

Marine phytoplankton biomass samples consisting predominantly of Dinophysis acuta, were acquired using a large double plankton net from waters off the South-west coast of Ireland. Analysis of unialgal samples using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence and …

Computer Based Methodologies For On-Line Scanning Force Microscopic Detection Of Immunological Binding Events, Patrick Joseph O'Mahony

Theses

The overall aim of this work was to develop computer based methodologies for the on-line scanning force microscopic detection of immunological binding events. To achieve this aim it was necessary to develop a rapid, high-resolution data acquisition system to digitise scanning force microscope (SFM) data on-line and then to develop an effective method for extracting the scanner induced background curvature from this data to reveal the nanoscale height binding events. Four techniques were investigated in terms of operational speed and performance accuracy; namely, polynomial interpolation; least squares approximation; real-time recursive least squares approximation; and wavelet approximation.

It was found that …

Point Extraction And Matching For Registration Of Infrared Astronomical Images, Adith Chandrasekhar Jan 1999

Point Extraction And Matching For Registration Of Infrared Astronomical Images, Adith Chandrasekhar

Theses

In this thesis, we deal with digital image sequences produced by an infrared detector array. The image sequences are characterized by large variations in noise and gray level statistics from one frame to the next. Moreover, owing to a number of defective pixels in the detector array, the frames are deliberately shifted from each other to improve the statistical properties of the signal and minimize noise. This and the inherent pointing uncertainty of the instrument result in random errors in frame positioning larger than a few pixels. This thesis discusses two point-feature based techniques to register such frames. Image registration, …

User-Responsivity And Environment-Sensitivity Consideration For State-Funded Housing In Alain City, Nassra Saif Al Daheri Jan 1999

User-Responsivity And Environment-Sensitivity Consideration For State-Funded Housing In Alain City, Nassra Saif Al Daheri

Theses

Massive housing projects have shown that prospective users are rarely given the opportunity to participate in the design decisions. Subsequently, such schemes commonly fail to accommodate all their needs. In the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the housing projects that aim at resettling of Bedouin into newly developed urban communities are state-funded. Many of these houses that were built in the late seventies and early eighties were transferred back to the state (in a very bad condition due to the users random modifications and additions) in exchange of newer better houses. The lack of an adaptive design concept that can accommodate …

Finite Element Analysis Solution Applications To Photoreceptor Modules, Robert Hildebrand Jan 1999

Finite Element Analysis Solution Applications To Photoreceptor Modules, Robert Hildebrand

Theses

One of the primary components in a Xerox copier is the print engine. The center of this engine is comprised of a photoreceptor, which is a roller/belt module mounted to a frame. The belt revolves around the module acquiring and transposing toner to sheets of paper as they come into contact with the module. The initial design of these modules can often lead to registration and print quality problems later in the assembly and application phases of design. The current analysis procedure includes lengthy commercial FEA packages that require high designer investment. For this reason, many new ideas are never …
