Model Based Effective Cell Volume Calculation In Ultrasound Tissue Characterization, Di Lai Jan 2001

Model Based Effective Cell Volume Calculation In Ultrasound Tissue Characterization, Di Lai

Theses

In reflective ultrasonic imaging, some statistical parameters can be extracted from the backscattered RF signal. Applying Rayleigh statistics or non-Rayleigh statistics to these parameters, the underlying tissue parameters such as effective scatterer number density that characterize the tissues can be further estimated. However, if the statistical processing is applied to the time domain signal, narrow band excitation pulse needs to be used when we consider the frequency dependency of the backscattered signal. The scattering resolution volume is also difficult to estimate. Chen, et al proposed a different method to determine the frequency-dependent effective scatterer number density, which is the actual …

Modeling Of Plume Dispersion And Interaction With The Surround Of Synthetic Imaging Applications, Jonathan Bishop Jan 2001

Modeling Of Plume Dispersion And Interaction With The Surround Of Synthetic Imaging Applications, Jonathan Bishop

Theses

Discharge of effluent gas is an inescapable byproduct of many physical processes. The type or characteristics of the discharge potentially indicate the nature of the process. Observation of factory stack gases, for example, may indicate the level of pollutants being emitted into the atmosphere or the nature of the process being carried out in the factory. In this work, we have developed an improved model of plume dispersion suitable for synthetic image generation (SIG) applications. The technique partially utilizes a new EPA model that discretizes the plume into a series of small puffs (rather than the implicit mono lithic form …

A Midsummer Night's Dream For Middle School, Diana Nash Jan 2001

A Midsummer Night's Dream For Middle School, Diana Nash

Theses

William Shakespeare wrote plays for the masses -- the aristocrats as well as the common people. While his dramas, tragedies, and comedies were controversial, sometimes bawdy, and always physical, in the twentieth century, secondary school educators have come to think of Shakespeare's plays as literature for academic study. Middle schools rarely cover any Shakespearean plays in the classroom. Students traditionally start to study Shakespearean scripts in high school. In high school, freshman usually read Romeo and Juliet; sophomores read Julius Caesar, Macbeth, or Hamlet. Most secondary curriculums do not include a Shakespearean comedy.

While it is true that occasionally a …

Contaminated Equipment Packing And Transportation, Vladimir Zado Jan 2001

Contaminated Equipment Packing And Transportation, Vladimir Zado

Theses

The nuclear power plants are significant source of the equipment contamination by radioactive particles. Versatile equipment is used during plant operation and/or maintenance and is contaminated while performing required operations. Usually, the decontamination of used equipment is performed but in many cases the residual level of contamination is still higher than allowed for unconditional release. The usual routine is to apply the same equipment for the maintenance works of other nuclear power plants. Such approach gains the problem of packaging of the contaminated equipment into applicable containers and transportation of these containers to other nuclear facility where equipment is unpacked …

Analysis Of The Edge Effect Of Error Propagation In Digital Halftones, Sunadi Gunawan Jan 2001

Analysis Of The Edge Effect Of Error Propagation In Digital Halftones, Sunadi Gunawan

Theses

The purpose of this research is to study quantitatively edge enhancement effects of different digital halftone algorithms, especially on Error diffusion and Linear Pixel Shuffling algorithms. It has been known that by changing the amount of error and the spread of error when processing original images, different edge enhancement effects are observed. In many cases sometimes an unsymmetrical edge enhancement phenomenon occurs at the junction of different gray levels. A new metric for describing edge enhancement effects is introduced. This metric is shown to be consistent and reliable. In order to describe the unsymmetrical edge enhancement phenomenon in some cases, …

Uniform Random Number Generation Using Pseudorandom Binary Sequences, Susan Rea Jan 2001

Uniform Random Number Generation Using Pseudorandom Binary Sequences, Susan Rea

Theses

Random numbers have conventionally been used in a range of applications such as numerical analysis, lotteries and computer simulation and as cryptographic keys. The algorithms used for the production of random numbers are termed pseudorandom, as the numbers produced are not truly random as they emanate from a deterministic periodic source that is they are predictable if a subset of the sequence is known. However, for most applications these pseudorandom number sources are entirely suitable.

For cryptographic key sources, however, the random number sequences must be statistically good and difficult to predict. Linear feedback shift registers are presented in this …

Β-Lactamase: Evolution Of Extended Spectrum Enzymes, Priscilla Shine Jan 2001

Β-Lactamase: Evolution Of Extended Spectrum Enzymes, Priscilla Shine

Theses

β-Lactam antibiotics are commonly used antimicrobial agents in clinical medicine. Because of their frequent use it is perhaps not surprising that resistance to these agents has increased over the past few decades, thus compromising the therapeutic advantages offered by these agents. The most common cause of resistance to β-lactam-based antibiotics has been the evolution of a group of enzymes known as β-lactamases, which act by inactivating the drug through structural modification. Plasmid-encoded TEM β-lactamases are examples of these hydrolytic enzymes and are associated with the amoxicillin resistance reported in over 50% of all E. coli isolates.

More recently β-lactamase enzymes …
