Reactive Media For Chromium Reduction Under Alkaline Conditions For Use In Permeable Reactive Barriers, Sachin V. Apte Jan 2001

Reactive Media For Chromium Reduction Under Alkaline Conditions For Use In Permeable Reactive Barriers, Sachin V. Apte

Theses

The purpose of this study was to select the appropriate reactive media for chromate reduction to treat groundwater (high pH) with permeable reactive barriers. The study addresses groundwater contamination for three chromium refining sites located in Hudson County, New Jersey. The use of iron (Fe0) as a reactive medium was studied and found to be insufficient for use in permeable reactive barriers because of the high pH conditions of groundwater at these sites. Pyrite and iron (Fe0)-pyrite mixtures were studied as viable reactive media by considering their passivation kinetics, reductive capacities and solubility properties.

Managing Toxic And Hazardous Substances Of Concern In Manufacturing, Craig Jancerak Jan 2001

Managing Toxic And Hazardous Substances Of Concern In Manufacturing, Craig Jancerak

Theses

This thesis examined data management from an object relational database perspective. The database used was a product from Cornell University called PREDATOR. The context of the evaluation is the life-cycle of a manufactured product. The manufacturing life-cycle was chosen to correspond to an environmental life-cycle being done at NJIT. However, the goal was to use a generic model that could be applied to many situations.

The first phase developed the conceptual life-cycle model. At a high level, the model was not designed with a programming language in mind. Several questions needed to be answered and the a [sic] model answers …

An Examination Of Discourse Concerned With Pcb Remediation In The Hudson River, Jennifer M. Coffey Jan 2001

An Examination Of Discourse Concerned With Pcb Remediation In The Hudson River, Jennifer M. Coffey

Theses

Remediation of PCB contamination in the Hudson River is an issue hotly contested within local communities, the media, and between government agencies and corporate entities. In recent years, the EPA has decided to revisit their 1984 no-action decision for the Hudson River and in December 2000, issued a Feasibility Study recommending partial dredging of the 200 miles of the Hudson floor deemed a Superfund site. The EPA's reevaluation of their 1984 decision has spurred an enormous amount of literature from corporate, non-profit volunteer, and government agencies.

The rhetorical theory of social constructionism and the ethical theory of environmental pragmatism are …

Emulation Of The Dataflow Computing Paradigm Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (Fpgas), Segreen Ingersoll Jan 2001

Emulation Of The Dataflow Computing Paradigm Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (Fpgas), Segreen Ingersoll

Theses

Building a perfect dataflow computer has been an endeavor of many computer engineers. Ideally, it is a perfect parallel machine with zero overheads, but implementing one has been anything but perfect. While the sequential nature of control flow machines makes them relatively easy to implement, dataflow machines have to address a number of issues that are easily solved in the realm of control flow paradigm. Past implementations of dataflow computers have addressed these issues, such as conditional and reentrant program structures, along with the flow of data, at the processor level, i.e. each processor in the design would handle these …

An Automated Approach For Comparative Analysis Of Interval And Heart Rate Variability, Taral Oza Jan 2001

An Automated Approach For Comparative Analysis Of Interval And Heart Rate Variability, Taral Oza

Theses

Cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of death in the adult population. Half of these cardiac deaths occur as sudden death. Some of the parameters from the surface ECG recording (a noninvasive technique) carry important information and have special significance in research, as they are good indicators of diseases leading to heart attacks, sudden cardiac death and other similar cardiac problems. Measurement of QT interval variability and heart rate variability are two such parameters, which has received much attention of researchers.

An algorithm has been developed to measure and compare the two significant parameters, the QT interval variability and the …

Theses

An autonomous system (AS) is a group of routers managed by a particular organization. Exterior gateway protocols (EGP) are used between AS's Internal Gateway Protocols (IGP) is used within an AS. The most common protocols used with TCP/IP are RIP, OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), IGRP / Enhanced IGRP.

The thesis revolves around OSPF protocol OSPF uses flooding to exchange link-state updates between routers. Any change in routing information is flooded to all routers in the network. Areas are introduced to put a boundary on the explosion of link-state updates. Flooding and calculation of the Dijkstra algorithm on a router …

Towards Hypermedia Support In Database Systems, Anirban Bhaumik Jan 2001

Towards Hypermedia Support In Database Systems, Anirban Bhaumik

Theses

The general goal of our research is to automatically generate links and other hypermedia related services to analytical applications. Using a dynamic hypermedia engine (DHE), the following features have been automated for database systems. Based on the database's relational (physical) schema and its original (non-normalized) entity-relationship specification links are generated, database application developers may also specify the relationship between different classes of database elements. These elements can be controlled by the same or different database application, or even by another software system. A DHE prototype has been developed and illustrates the above for a relational database management system.

The DHE …

Deposition Of Tantalum On Steel By Sputtering, Bhavin Shah Jan 2001

Deposition Of Tantalum On Steel By Sputtering, Bhavin Shah

Theses

Recent interest in tantalum deposition comes from two different applications. One is in microelectronics where thin tantalum films (< 1 µm) are used as diffusion barrier layers for copper interconnects. The other involves its application as a material for corrosion and wear resistant coating on surfaces that are subjected to high stresses and harsh chemical and erosive environments.

This thesis is a part of the investigation done at the Ion Beam and Thin Film Research Laboratory at NJIT to study the deposition conditions and properties of tantalum thin films. It includes the design and construction of Planar D.C. Magnetron Sputtering System and Cylindrical D.C. Magnetron Sputtering System for deposition on the planar and cylindrical surfaces of steel, respectively. The electrical characteristics of the cylindrical system were tested in a range of pressures and conditions for initiation and maintaining of …

Optimization Of Nitrogen Removal In Sequencing Batch Reactor, Suppakit Poonyachat Jan 2001

Optimization Of Nitrogen Removal In Sequencing Batch Reactor, Suppakit Poonyachat

Theses

Operating parameters for sequencing batch reactor have the influenceon each substrate concentration. Concentration profile changes as operationparameters are changed. The study was conducted to model the variationin effluent concentration from sequencing batch reactor. MLVSS and cycletime are the parameters that were varied. Concentration in Fill, React, and Settle Period were calculated by using kinetic equations.

The results can show that these parameters have effects on the concentrationprofile. The increase of MLVSS can lower the concentration of BOD andammonium concentration in React period. Increasing MLVSS can show thatmore substrate utilization and nitrification process occur more rapidly.Concentration of nitrate at the end of …

Highway Advisory Radio In The State Of New Jersey, Thomas Mark Nemeth Jan 2001

Highway Advisory Radio In The State Of New Jersey, Thomas Mark Nemeth

Theses

Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) is a broadcasting system used by transportation agencies to disseminate vital real-time traffic information to motorists. Each transmitter is restricted by the rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to an average broadcast radius of three to five miles. Most commonly these transmitters are located at major highway intersections, such that motorists may take alternate routes in case of congestion or emergencies.

All operational HAR transmitters in New Jersey were identified and their coverage zones were quantitatively characterized in terms of the signal to noise ratio at the receiver. These experimental results were then …

Evaluating Water Quality Monitoring With Hyperspectral Imagery, Adam Goodenough Jan 2001

Evaluating Water Quality Monitoring With Hyperspectral Imagery, Adam Goodenough

Theses

Water quality is an important indicator of the health of an environmental system. Traditionally, water quality analysis has involved directly sampling areas in question. This method is difficult, if not impractical, to apply to large areas where data needs to be taken frequently. Remote sensing offers the possibility of covering a large spatial area with a high temporal frequency. It also provides a spatial distribution of the constituents which direct sampling cannot economically accomplish. Spatial distributions provide deeper insight into many of the hydrologic and biological processes that are directly affected by the concentrations of water constituents. The drawback of …

Texture Characterization In Dirsig, Christy Burtner Jan 2001

Texture Characterization In Dirsig, Christy Burtner

Theses

This research project tested the quality of DIRSIG's texture characterization routines for a grass target and potential techniques to improve it. The objective of the DIRSIG is to produce output images that are analogous to real image outputs so the model can be applied to a wide range of problems. It is very important that both spectral and spatial properties of targets are modeled correctly to obtain realistic results. DIRSIG applies texture to each pixel spectrally. Current techniques examine only one bandpass region, using statistical means to compare a texture image in that bandpass with a spectral database in order …

The Optical Properties Of Varnishes And Their Effects On Image Quality, Collin Day Jan 2001

The Optical Properties Of Varnishes And Their Effects On Image Quality, Collin Day

Theses

Varnishes have been used to alter the appearance of paintings throughout history. Most significantly, they help to level the surface of the painting and reduce the first-surface diffuse scattering of light. This scattering makes a painting appear desaturated and gives it a much lower contrast. Traditionally, varnishes have been made from natural sources, such as tree resins. Over time these varnishes will dull and add a yellow cast. Also, the repeated cleaning and reapplication may hasten the deterioration of the painting, making the choice of varnish crucial in order to restore the painting to its original appearance and retain this …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Atmospheric Compensation Algorithms For Multispectral Systems Configuration, Eric Webber Jan 2001

Sensitivity Analysis Of Atmospheric Compensation Algorithms For Multispectral Systems Configuration, Eric Webber

Theses

This study evaluates a series of atmospheric correction techniques developed at RIT called Total Inversion. The ability to convert remotely sensed image data to physically meaningful scientific units, such as surface reflectance, has been demonstrated f hyperspectral systems. This capability, however, has not been proven with the use of multispectral satellite-based remote sensing systems. The goal of this study is to determine the feasibility of adapting the Total Inversion techniques for multispectral s understanding the capabilities and limitations of these techniques for operational use. This means that the algorithmic process being used must be image based, have practical run times, …

Image Resizing And Image Quality, Michael Godlewski Jan 2001

Image Resizing And Image Quality, Michael Godlewski

Theses

The need to resize an image is a common occurrence in all facets of industry, from data collection to consumer use. However, most of the research conducted in this area focuses on the various statistical measures, such as RMS deviation. While the statistical measures are suitable for determining the effectiveness of the interpolator f data collection, they do not necessarily coincide with the effectiveness of the interpolator in a consumer application. This study, therefore, focuses on the use of the three most common resizing algorithms, the bi-c bi-linear and nearest neighbor interpolators, in the area of image quality from the …
