A Study Of Unbalance In Hydraulically Driven Fan Systems, Collin Sirco

Theses

A study has been conducted to investigate unbalance in Valeo hydraulically driven fan systems (HDFS). The principles of balancing have been modeled and applied to HDFS assemblies. The process from the initial build of the part during the molding process to the final completed assembly has been evaluated to determine how to best decrease unbalance in a manufacturing environment. The areas that were deemed to need significant improvement are the couple unbalance specification and the act of inserting balls into the fan groove to correct for unbalance. A new specification of 48 kg-mm2 was recommended and has been introduced to …

Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding May 2001

Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding

Theses

This thesis project is concerned with the role that graphic designers have in making learning materials more effective. It is focused on the need for instructional materials to reflect current advances in cognitive psychology and our society's definition of intelligence. Most instructional materials today are outdated and ineffective. Some reasons are political, others are socio-economic, and some fall within the scope of the designed environment. Learning materials, especially textbooks, designed before the 1980's have been designed without standards, and at a time when intelligence was seen as a narrow list of abilities.

Creating The Consumer: Credit Cards & The Role Of Design & Advertising, Yasmin Jung

Theses

The ideas and messages we as image makers communicate have a potential to reach millions of people, and as professionals we need to be aware of both the positive and negative consequences of the work we do. What are we as designers, photographers, and other creative professionals contributing with our work? Are we educating, informing, or simply manipulating? Ideally, ethics, education, and a certain sense of responsibility are integrated into each of our endeavors, but those things are often neglected for the sake of personal gain and prestige, and the goals of a client. Everyday, no matter where we turn, …

Breath--Sound Of Time And Space, Cho Seung-Yean Apr 2001

Breath--Sound Of Time And Space, Cho Seung-Yean

Theses

Thousands of times I have asked myself, "why do I draw?" Nobody asks me to paint and draw these things, but I am locked in my studio by myself and am drawing each day. Perhaps I draw in order to figure out why I draw. Everyone may have this kind of experience. Since I became a "grown-up," I haven't played on a swing which I did quite often during my childhood. A few years ago, I found swings near my house. I tried to swing again but I couldn't do it well. It was hard to recall how to swing. …

Error Characterization Of Spectral Products Using A Factorial Designed Experiment, John Klatt Apr 2001

Error Characterization Of Spectral Products Using A Factorial Designed Experiment, John Klatt

Theses

The main objective of any imaging system is to collect information. Information is conveyed in remotely sensed imagery by the spatial and spectral distribution of the energy reflected/emitted from the earth. This energy is subsequently captured by an overhead imaging system. Post-processing algorithms, which rely on this spectral and spatial energy distribution, allow us to extract useful information from the collected data. Typically, spectral processing algorithms include such procedures as target detection, thematic mapping and spectral pixel unmixing. The final spectral products from these algorithms include detection maps, classification maps and endmember fraction maps. The spatial resolution, spectral sampling and …

Optimal Shape Design Of Steadily-Loaded Journal Bearings Using Genetic Algorithms, Sulaymon Eshkabilov Apr 2001

Optimal Shape Design Of Steadily-Loaded Journal Bearings Using Genetic Algorithms, Sulaymon Eshkabilov

Theses

This thesis investigates the use of genetic algorithms to optimize the shape of an ungrooved fluid-film journal bearing under steady load and steady speed so that it can carry the maximum possible load while constrained to maintaining an adequate minimum film thickness. The shape of the bearing sleeve is assumed to vary only in the radial direction, and the shape is represented by linear interpolation of three film thickness design specifications along the bearing sleeve. Each set of film thickness specifications in the design space is encoded into a binary string called a chromosome, and a set of chromosomes makes …

Graphic Design In The Urban Transportation Environment, Ozlem Yildirim-Dessauer Mar 2001

Graphic Design In The Urban Transportation Environment, Ozlem Yildirim-Dessauer

Theses

This thesis focuses on various design problems facing graphic designers who design visual messages for urban transportation environments, specifically bus and subway systems. The urban transit environment poses a unique challenge for designers because it is multidimensional, and the audience is in constant motion. As David Bernstein describes the transit environment: "It's up, down, all around, in the sky, underground..." (Bernstein, 1997, p. 9). Added to this unique challenge of capturing the audience's fleeting attention span, designers also face problems of space limitations, poor lighting, chaotic placement of posters, and lack of a cohesive visual plan for a transit venue. …

Computational Flow Analysis Of A Dual Chamber Vortex Generator For An Absorption Refrigeration System, Amilcar Ramos Feb 2001

Computational Flow Analysis Of A Dual Chamber Vortex Generator For An Absorption Refrigeration System, Amilcar Ramos

Theses

A significant amount of low temperature (between 60C and 99C) heat is wasted annually in industrial processes. This wasted heat has the potential to drive absorption regrigeration systems with the penalty of lowering the COP (Coefficient of Performance) of the absorption regrigeration system. An absorption refrigeration system with a vortex generator, permits the use of low temperature waste heat as an energy source with improved generator capacity and COP. The vortex generator is a device that consists of two chambers (lower and upper chamber) and is used to separate the refrigerant from the absorbent in absorption refrigeration system by a …

A Study And Some Experimental Work Of Digital Image And Video Watermarking, Tsui-Feng Liu

Theses

The rapid growth of digitized media and the emergence of digital networks have created a pressing need for copyright protection and anonymous communications schemes. Digital watermarking (or data hiding in a more general term) is a kind of steganography technique by adding information into a digital data stream. Several most important watermarking schemes applied to multilevel and binary still images and digital videos were studied. They include schemes based on DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform), DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform), and fractal transforms. The question whether these invisible watermarking techniques can resolve the issue of rightful ownership of intellectual properties was discussed. …

An Efficient Expression Of The Timestamp And Period In Packet-And Cell-Based Schedulers, Dong Wei Jan 2001

An Efficient Expression Of The Timestamp And Period In Packet-And Cell-Based Schedulers, Dong Wei

Theses

Scheduling algorithms are implemented in hardware in high-speed switches to provide Quality-of-Service guarantees in both cell-based and packet-based networks. Being able to guarantee end-to-delay and fairness, timestamp-based fair queuing algorithms, which include SCFQ, WFQ, WF2Q and WF2Q+, have received much attention in the past few years. In timestamp-based fair queuing algorithms, the size of timestamp and period determines the supportable rates in terms of the range and accuracy. Furthermore, it also determines the scheduler's memory in terms of offchip bandwidth and storage space. An efficient expression can reduce the size of the timestamp and period without compromising the accuracy. In …

Testing Of Semiconductor-Based Adsorption Modified Photosensitive (Samp) Sensor For Response To Toluene, Ashish Agrawal Jan 2001

Testing Of Semiconductor-Based Adsorption Modified Photosensitive (Samp) Sensor For Response To Toluene, Ashish Agrawal

Theses

The response of semiconductor-based adsorption modified photosensitive sensor is based on the dye-enhanced photoconductivity of a CdS semiconducting film. The change in this photoconductivity is brought about when organic molecules are sorbed onto the dye-coated surface. The response is related to the overlap in the infrared spectrum of the dye with that of the analyte.

This research was carried out to study the response of the sensor to a typical hydrocarbon, toluene. The sensor was tested for its response to concentrations of toluene ranging from 2.6 ppm to 200 PPM in nitrogen. The sensor was tested under non-flow conditions and …
