Enhanced Closed Loop Performance Using Non-Dimensional Analysis, Michael H. Wilson Jan 2004

Enhanced Closed Loop Performance Using Non-Dimensional Analysis, Michael H. Wilson

Theses

This paper investigates the benefits of using non-dimension analysis to develop a control law for a flexible electro-mechanical system. The system that is analyzed consists of a DC motor connected to a load inertia through a set of gears. A state space system model is derived using LaGrange's equation and then non-dimensionalized using a linear transformation. The resulting system model reveals the system character more clearly through the resulting dimensionless parameters. The parameters highlight the interaction between system properties and motor constants and demonstrate the benefits of a concurrent mechatronics design process. Open-loop behavior is analyzed and an optimal value …

Theses

Heterogeneous Computing (HC) is a technique speeds the computation of large tasks by utilizing multiple computers or supercomputers, each of which is best suited to a particular type of computation. Micro-Heterogeneous Computing (MHC) has been proposed to bring this practice to individual computers. With the aid of the higher speed, short distance interconnects found within the next generation of personal computers and commodity servers, it should be possible to apply HC to relatively small grain sizes. MHC draws on the observations that in order for a new computing technology to become widely accepted, and cost effective, there must be a …

Brand Color Tolerances: A Comparison Of Memory Color Vs. Paired Comparison Color Matching, Allison K. Santoro Jan 2004

Brand Color Tolerances: A Comparison Of Memory Color Vs. Paired Comparison Color Matching, Allison K. Santoro

Theses

The proposed thesis topic is to compare two methods of judging brand colors, paired comparison and memory color. Today's current practice for press approval in the graphic arts industry involves an individual using a sensitive comparison of a proof to a press sheet. The resulting piece is later viewed by a user who will have no knowledge of the original (a proof). The exception, however, is the memory of the "logo" or brand color that the user may have. The argument can be made that the additional cost of a press approval is justified by the possibility of accruing extra …

Adhesion Of Copper To Polytetrafluoroethylene Surfaces Modified With Vacuum Uv Radiation Downstream From He And Ar Microwave Plasmas, Hrishikesh R. Desai Jan 2004

Adhesion Of Copper To Polytetrafluoroethylene Surfaces Modified With Vacuum Uv Radiation Downstream From He And Ar Microwave Plasmas, Hrishikesh R. Desai

Theses

Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) is an attractive material for insulating layers between conductors, such as copper, in the packaging of high-performance electronic devices because of its excellent thermal and chemical properties and its low dielectric constant. Strong adhesion between copper and PTFE is difficult to develop because perfluorinated materials are hydrophobic, relatively inert chemically and possess low surface energies, thus accounting for their non-stick behavior. Since vacuum UV radiation (VUV) is of current interest in the production of small feature sizes on polymer surfaces using photolithography, investigations were conducted to study the ability of plasma generated VUV radiation to control the adhesion …

Dynamically Loaded Self-Aligning Journal Bearings: A Mobility Method Approach, Nathan Mayer Jan 2004

Dynamically Loaded Self-Aligning Journal Bearings: A Mobility Method Approach, Nathan Mayer

Theses

Journal bearings are a fundamental component in many pieces of machinery. A properly designed bearing is capable of supporting large loads in rotating systems with minimal frictional energy losses and virtually no wear even after years of services. These benefits make an understanding of dynamic behavior of these devices very valuable. In applications where journal bearings are subject to misalignment (conditions where the journal and sleeve axes are not parallel), it has long been understood that bearing performance can be compromised. To eliminate this problem, self-aligning bearings have been designed. The sleeves of these bearings are capable of moving freely …

Goal Directed Visual Search Based On Color Cues: Co-Operative Effectes Of Top-Down & Bottom-Up Visual Attention, Vishal S. Vaingankar

Theses

Focus of Attention plays an important role in perception of the visual environment. Certain objects stand out in the scene irrespective of observers' goals. This form of attention capture, in which stimulus feature saliency captures our attention, is of a bottom-up nature. Often prior knowledge about objects and scenes can influence our attention. This form of attention capture, which is influenced by higher level knowledge about the objects, is called top-down attention. Top-down attention acts as a feedback mechanism for the feed-forward bottom-up attention. Visual search is a result of a combined effort of the top-down (cognitive cue) system and …
