A Physics-Based Analytical Model Of An Algan/Gan High Electron Mobility Transistor, Jonathan Sippel
A Physics-Based Analytical Model Of An Algan/Gan High Electron Mobility Transistor, Jonathan Sippel
Theses
Popular semiconductors currently being used for RF applications include GaAs and InP. The operating frequencies for HEMTs built with these semiconductors covers the range from 800 MHz to 100 GHz. Although high-speed operation is attainable using GaAs or InP, product performance is limited when considering high-power applications, where a high breakdown field and thermal conductivity is needed. Proposed about fifteen years ago as a solution to this problem, GaN has emerged as a viable candidate to challenge, and perhaps overtake, GaAs and InP as the dominant semiconductor in RF products, particularly power amplifiers. This is due to its high breakdown …
Web Radio Blueprint, Michael P. Moran
Web Radio Blueprint, Michael P. Moran
Theses
The Internet is one of the most significant technological developments in our lifetime, and its impact affects many established technologies and media. Radio is one of the established media revolutionized by the Internet because of the expanding multi-media capabilities, leading the way to a more focused medium when compared to traditional terrestrial radio broadcasting. Radio transmissions over the Internet (Web Radio) offers the opportunity to provide content focused to a “niche” audience, while providing an opportunity for broader operator participation than terrestrial radio. Web Radio is an Information Technology that offers a viable alternative to commercial radio, which has become …
The Design Of Interface And Function Of Cellular Phones For Old People, Yusuke Oda
The Design Of Interface And Function Of Cellular Phones For Old People, Yusuke Oda
Theses
A cellular phone is hard to handle for older people in terms of interface and function. In this thesis, the word "interface" stands for hardware and software interface and the word "older people" refers to Japanese people who are over 60 years old. Fundamentally, the interface must be easy to handle and convenient. In addition, it must be easy to access all of the functions that the user needs. However, it is questionable whether the interface and function of the present cellular phones are taking older people into consideration. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to consider new interface …

The Deceit Of Internet Hate Speech: A Study Of The Narrative And Visual Methods Used By Hate Groups On The Internet, Gina M. Albano
The Deceit Of Internet Hate Speech: A Study Of The Narrative And Visual Methods Used By Hate Groups On The Internet, Gina M. Albano
Theses
Intentional misinformation is a problem that has been documented in a variety of shapes and forms for thousands of years and continues to plague the American landscape. The advent and increasing usage of the Internet has created an additional venue through which intentional misinformation is disseminated, and many groups are taking full advantage of this new communication medium. Because the Internet allows anyone with web publishing skills to disseminate misinformation, it is often difficult for users to judge the credibility of the information. Hate groups understand this phenomenon and are taking full advantage of the Internet by publishing hate sites …

Vhdl Implementation And Synthesis Of Adaptive Thresholding, Nicholas P. Sardino
Theses
As the world of mobile multimedia computing continues to grow, so does the need for small, high performance, low power microchips. The implementation of the software algorithms used in these systems therefore has become an increasingly important issue in more recent applications. In order to realize the goals of our technological society and keep up with the speed at which computing technology is growing, the hardware implementation of these algorithms must be examined. This thesis describes the implementation and system simulation of four image binarization algorithms. The first algorithm is a simple global thresholding algorithm, while the remaining three adapt …
Internal Organizational Communication During Crisis Situations: The Effect Of Supportive Messages On Employee Stress Levels, Carin L. Kosmoski
Internal Organizational Communication During Crisis Situations: The Effect Of Supportive Messages On Employee Stress Levels, Carin L. Kosmoski
Theses
This study investigates the effects of supportive messages from immediate supervisors or CEO's on employees during crisis situations. Supportive messages are hypothesized to decrease the stress levels of employees. The extent to which supportive messages from managers or executives during crisis situations affect employee perceptions of support from their organization, their CEO, and their immediate supervisor is also explored. During the research process, 78 volunteer participants received one of three messages from a hypothetical organization following a hypothetical crisis situation. Spearman's ranked correlations comparing reported support with reported stress levels indicate that, for the group studied, there is a negative …
Development Of A Human Visual System With The Ability To Detect Inconsistent Events, Jeremiah D. Brazeau
Development Of A Human Visual System With The Ability To Detect Inconsistent Events, Jeremiah D. Brazeau
Theses
Current research has shown that it is possible to create a general purpose learning system that models the first few layers of the human visual system. The goal of this thesis is to build upon that idea and produce a computational model capable of learning different aspects of visual information. Simulations show that the system is capable of learning and distinguishing different types of motion. Results also give one explanation, consistent with current experiments, explaining how the human visual system learns information and as such may produce the capability to predict behavior in future experiments.
Analytical And Numerical Modeling To Address Signal Integrity Issues In Mixed Signal Applications, Jeffrey D. Mcfiggins
Analytical And Numerical Modeling To Address Signal Integrity Issues In Mixed Signal Applications, Jeffrey D. Mcfiggins
Theses
Signal integrity issues are a major concern in highly integrated and compact mixed signal IC's. This work presents a numerical and analytical method for analyzing and assessing signal integrity issues relating to discontinuities, interconnects, and irregularly shaped power planes through the development of two independent methods. To address the coupling issue the finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique has been used, which is an accurate and robust algorithm capable of analyzing an arbitrary geometry in both the frequency and time domains. The analysis of signal integrity issues is carried out using examples such as transmission lines placed in close proximity, …

Feasibility Analysis Of Correlation Based Prefetching Using Digital Signal Processing, David L. Morse
Feasibility Analysis Of Correlation Based Prefetching Using Digital Signal Processing, David L. Morse
Theses
As the gap between processor performance and memory performance continues to broaden with time, techniques to hide memory latency such as correlation based prefetching become exceedingly important. When a memory reference issued by the processor misses the level one cache, the request propagates down the memory hierarchy until it finally finds the requested datum. With each layer traversed, the latency grows exponentially. Prefetching is a technique used to hide this latency by attempting to predict which memory references will be requested in the near future, and then load them into cache before they are needed. This work investigates the use …
Evaluation Of The Playstation 2 As A Cluster Computing Node, Christopher R. Nigro
Evaluation Of The Playstation 2 As A Cluster Computing Node, Christopher R. Nigro
Theses
Cluster computing is currently a popular, cost-effective solution to the increasing computational demands of many applications in scientific computing and image processing. A cluster computer is comprised of several networked computers known as nodes. Since the goal of cluster computing is to provide a cost-effective means to processing computationally demanding applications, nodes that can be obtained at a low price with minimal performance tradeoff are always attractive. Presently, the most common cluster computers are comprised of networks of workstations constructed from commodity components. Recent trends have shown that computers being developed and deployed for purposes other than traditional personal computers …
Concurrent Evolution Of Feature Extractors And Modular Artificial Neural Networks, Victor Hannak
Concurrent Evolution Of Feature Extractors And Modular Artificial Neural Networks, Victor Hannak
Theses
Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are commonly used in both academia and industry as a solution to challenges in the pattern recognition domain. However, there are two problems that must be addressed before an ANN can be successfully applied to a given recognition task: ANN customization and data pre-processing. First, ANNs require customization for each specific application. Although the underlying mathematics of ANNs is well understood, customization based on theoretical analysis is impractical because of the complex interrelationship between ANN behavior and the problem domain. On the other hand, an empirical approach to the task of customization can be successful with …

Use Of Electric Money In Japan, Tomoaki Miura
Theses
This paper will take a look at electric money and demonstrate that it cannot entirely replace cash in Japan. With the progress of Information Technology (IT), Electronic Commerce (EC, e-commerce) has recently expanded into the society in Japan. However, since Japan is still a developing nation in IT, the government has decided to advance the plan "eJapan" in 2001 that aims to make Japan the leading IT nation in the world within five years with all of the citizens actively using IT (IT Square, 2003). In the plan, the government has largely focused on five projects, which are the construction …

Data Hiding In Images Based On Fractal Modulation And Diversity Combining, Sarat B. Atluri
Data Hiding In Images Based On Fractal Modulation And Diversity Combining, Sarat B. Atluri
Theses
The current work provides a new data-embedding infrastructure based on fractal modulation. The embedding problem is tackled from a communications point of view. The data to be embedded becomes the signal to be transmitted through a watermark channel. The channel could be the image itself or some manipulation of the image. The image self noise and noise due to attacks are the two sources of noise in this paradigm. At the receiver, the image self noise has to be suppressed, while noise due to the attacks may sometimes be predicted and inverted. The concepts of fractal modulation and deterministic self-similar …

Using System Call Analysis To Stop Evasion Attacks In Anomaly Based Intrusion Detection System, Ashish Liladhar Samant
Using System Call Analysis To Stop Evasion Attacks In Anomaly Based Intrusion Detection System, Ashish Liladhar Samant
Theses
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) that operate on the principle of system call monitoring are known to be susceptible to mimicry or evasion attacks. It has been shown that an intelligent adversary armed with comprehensive knowledge of the target system or network, can penetrate these targets, hide his presence from the IDS, and continue to carry out damage. IDSs, which use system calls to define normal behavior, often leave out complimentary information about them, and intruders use precisely this drawback, to deceive the IDS. This thesis investigates the vulnerabilities of a system call based IDS and carries out a theoretical and …
Digitally Tunable Low Noise Amplifier, Mohamed Benmansour
Digitally Tunable Low Noise Amplifier, Mohamed Benmansour
Theses
Low noise amplifiers are classified into two categories: Wideband low noise amplifiers and Narrowband low noise amplifiers. Wideband LNAs are known for achieving a poor noise performance. On the other hand, the noise performance of the narrowband amplifiers is good but only over a small frequency range. This constraint made their use restricted to certain applications, such as cellular phone applications (superheterodyne architecture), where a single operational frequency is needed. This thesis introduces a new low noise amplifier topology that provides a high selectivity and a low noise figure over a wide frequency range. The digitally tunable low noise amplifier …
Forecasting Hospital Bed Availability Using Computer Simulation And Neural Networks, Matthew J. Daniels
Forecasting Hospital Bed Availability Using Computer Simulation And Neural Networks, Matthew J. Daniels
Theses
The success of hospitals in treating patients and staying in business relies on their efficient use of resources. In particular, the utilization of hospital beds is a critical concern, since over-crowding will result in delays or transfers of patients, and under-utilization will result in lost opportunity to treat patients and generate profit. To this end, hospital decision makers must have reliable forecasts of patient demand and bed availability. The objective of this thesis was to create a general method to forecast the availability of hospital beds in the short term, up to 2 days into the future. Specifically, this thesis …
Dynamic Input Match Correction In R.F. Low Noise Amplifiers, Tejasvi Das
Dynamic Input Match Correction In R.F. Low Noise Amplifiers, Tejasvi Das
Theses
An R.F. circuit that recognizes its faults, and then corrects its performance in real-time has been the holy-grail of RFIC design. This work presents, for the first time, a complete architecture and successful implementation of such a circuit. It is the first step towards the grand vision of fault-free, package independent, integrated R.F. Front End circuitry. The performance of R.F. front-end circuitry can degrade significantly due to process faults and parasitic package inductances at its input. These inductances have wide tolerances and are difficult to co-design for. A novel methodology, which overcomes current obstacles plaguing such an objective, is proposed …

Novel Vlsi Architecture Of Motion Estimation And Compensation For H.264 Standard, Xiang Li
Theses
This thesis presents a high performance novel VLSI architecture of a H.264 motion estimator, which can be used as a building block for real-time H.264 video compression. Full-search block matching algorithm was used in this design. Pipeline structure was developed for variable block size processing units to work in parallel. The speed at 125MHz is good for real time motion estimation with 25/sec frame rate and 640x480 resolutions. The processing speed is also independent of the threshold level of Sum of Absolute Difference (SAD), which is used to determine the size of the macro block. The architecture is implemented with …

Effective Crisis Intervention In The School: The Role Of Training, Experience, And Self-Efficacy On School Psychologists' Ability To Intervene, Erica J. Deming
Theses
School psychologists' graduate and post-graduate preparation, intervention experience, and self-efficacy regarding crisis intervention services were investigated. A national survey was mailed to members of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) that resulted in a return rate of 38%. Demographic statistics indicated that a majority of school psychologists received at least some preservice crisis intervention training; however, 82.6% do not feel that this adequately prepared them to provide crisis intervention. Experience ratings suggested that school psychologists have little to no experience with gangs, weapons, gun control, natural disasters, and dealing with the media during a crisis. Chrildren's dealing with the …
Modeling Periodic Blade Stresses Due To Stator-Rotor Interactions Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Lisa M. Barrett
Modeling Periodic Blade Stresses Due To Stator-Rotor Interactions Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Lisa M. Barrett
Theses
High cycle fatigue (HCF) is a common problem in military turbofan engines, resulting in engine component failure, and billions of dollars a year in repair and maintenance. HCF occurs due to engine component aerodynamic interactions, including vortical and potential field effects. In 1987, the IHPTET program was created by the U.S. Department of Defense. One of the goals of this program was to reduce high cycle fatigue in engine components. A method of reducing the amount of HCF occurring in a turbofan engine is referred to as trailing edge blowing (TEB). TEB reduces the vortical, or wake, components of a …
