Personal Motivations For Philanthropy, Neil Monteiro
Theses
This study discusses the impact of individual motivational factors for charitable contributions. This study is important because it will help R.I.T and similar educational/non profit organizations understand the "intrinsic factors" that motivate individuals to donate time, money, or goods. The results of this study will help the organization understand their donors. This study will "only" address individual philanthropy. This study focuses on the Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T) located in Rochester, New York.
Practical Applications Of Design Semiotics, Amy Bendall
Practical Applications Of Design Semiotics, Amy Bendall
Theses
This thesis explores instructional design and how it can be implemented in a large lecture course in order to improve the comprehension and retention of theoretical design concepts. My thesis was inspired by the difficulty in teaching first year undergraduate students design theory in the required undergraduate course Design Survey. One consistent problem is the student's inability to understand how these abstract concepts apply to them individually and within their academic discipline.

Effects Of Sputter Deposition Parameters On Stress In Tantalum Films With Applications To Chemical Mechanical Planarization Of Copper, Jeffrey L. Perry
Theses
Attempts to introduce a CMP process for copper damascene features at Rochester Institute of Technology were stymied by adhesion failures of the Ta/Cu film stack. This work was undertaken to investigate the effect of stress in the films on adhesion and to develop a viable CMP process for Cu damascene technology. In depth studies of stress as a function of sputter deposition conditions revealed that stress in Ta layers could vary from -1700 MPa compression to +800 MPa tensile for deposition pressures over a range of 2-20 mTorr for films having a nominal thickness of 0.25 μm. For a fixed …

Multiframe Super-Resolution Of Color Image Sequences Using A Global Motion Model, Gabriel Dore
Multiframe Super-Resolution Of Color Image Sequences Using A Global Motion Model, Gabriel Dore
Theses
The development of efficient software tools capable of super- resolving multi-spectral image sequences on-the-fly is an important step toward the production of imaging systems capable of acquiring vital imagery of hostile environments at an affordable price. A number of image processing tools already available for use in target recognition and identification rely on the availability of high-resolution imagery which cannot be safely acquired at a reasonable price. This thesis investigates the use of multiframe super-resolution as a tool to increase the spatial resolution of image sequences acquired with sensors commonly used in consumer video cameras. Multiframe super-resolution is the branch …

Sub-Pixel Event Repositioning Algorithms For Chandra X-Ray Astronomical Imaging, Jingqiang Li
Sub-Pixel Event Repositioning Algorithms For Chandra X-Ray Astronomical Imaging, Jingqiang Li
Theses
Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) offers unprecedented spatial resolution for X-ray astronomical imaging. As focal plane arrays, ACIS CCDs were fabricated to satisfy CXO's requirements in spatial and spectral specifications, and operate in photon-counting mode to record any photoelectric interactions into event lists with energy information and charge split morphology (grade). The charge cloud generated by a single X-ray photon has a relatively small size compared to ACIS pixel, and the shape is approximated by an axial-symmetric Gaussian with full width half maximum (FWHM) about 2 to 4 microns. This fact indicates that the …

Models Of Statistical Self-Similarity For Signal And Image Synthesis, Seungsin Lee
Models Of Statistical Self-Similarity For Signal And Image Synthesis, Seungsin Lee
Theses
Statistical self-similarity of random processes in continuous-domains is defined through invariance of their statistics to time or spatial scaling. In discrete-time, scaling by an arbitrary factor of signals can be accomplished through frequency warping, and statistical self-similarity is defined by the discrete-time continuous-dilation scaling operation. Unlike other self-similarity models mostly relying on characteristics of continuous self-similarity other than scaling, this model provides a way to express discrete-time statistical self-similarity using scaling of discrete-time signals. This dissertation studies the discrete-time self-similarity model based on the new scaling operation, and develops its properties, which reveals relations with other models. Furthermore, it also …

Feature Partitioning For The Co-Traning Setting, Vineet Chaoji
Theses
Supervised learning algorithms rely on availability of labeled data. Labeled data is either scarce or involves substantial human effort in the labeling process. These two factors, along with the abundance of unlabeled data, have spurred research initiatives that exploit unlabeled data to boost supervised learning. This genre of learning algorithms that utilize unlabeled data alongside a small set of labeled data are known as semi-supervised learning algorithms. Data characteristics, such as the presence of a generative model, provide the foundation for applying these learning algorithms. Co-training is one such al gorithm that leverages existence of two redundant "views" for a …

Computer Aided Design Of The Pipelined Interconnect Free Logic, Vaibhav Avachat
Theses
The Pipelined Interconnect Free (PIF) logic design methodology has the potential to eliminate several problems that are faced by the modern technology digital designers. It is very easy to model and it gives an exact idea of the circuit layout during design phase only as it uses only one type of gate and does not have any global interconnects. The thesis discusses the PIF logic circuits, their applications and performance. It discusses the full implementation of a PIF one bit full adder starting from schematic to layout stage. It discusses the issues related to the implementation of larger PIF logic …

The Effects Of Object Weight And Three-Dimensional Movement On Human Movement Time And Fitts' Law, Kyle T. Hagadorn
Theses
The speed and accuracy of movement depend on several factors that have been previously identified including target size and movement amplitude. According to Fitts' Law these variables comprise an Index of Difficulty that is directly related to the movement time. This principle of human performance has been studied extensively over a wide array of settings and contexts. The objective of this thesis was to investigate human movement time for tasks requiring precision placement of weighted objects, a task frequently encountered in industrial and occupational settings. Specifically, this thesis evaluated the effects of object weight, complexity of movement, and handedness on …

Emotional Recogition Ability Among Incarcerated Youth, Aubrey S. Elmore
Theses
The purpose of this study was to consider emotional recognition ability among incarcerated youth. Specifically, thirty-eight inmates who were eligible for a Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE) under New York State law participated in the study. Participants were administered Ekman's facial discrimination task (1976), the Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form (SRM-SF; Gibbs, Basinger, &Fuller, 1992), and an Emotional Intelligence Survey (Schutte et al., 1998). Results showed the incarcerated youth were less accurate in identifying emotions from facial expressions than were non-incarcerated young adults. Further, incarcerated youth with identified learning disabilities were even less accurate in their ability to recognize emotions than …
The Persuasive Image, George D. Grove
The Persuasive Image, George D. Grove
Theses
The unfortunate suburban migration continues. These newly arrived suburbanites exchange their multidimensional urban city views for those of a carefully constructed and intensely controlled pastoral view. This view from their windows is one that symbolizes their ownership of the land and their freedom from dense urban living conditions. The open space and grass function as powerful reminders of why they live in suburbia. But what would occur if the suburbanites were to exchange their view of plastic Eden with images from the city? What if the view of their altered yards and obsessively manicured gardens were intentionally replaced with views …

Syntheses Of Polyphenylacetylene And Poly-1-Hexyene With Single-Site Catalysts, Xiaohang Xie
Syntheses Of Polyphenylacetylene And Poly-1-Hexyene With Single-Site Catalysts, Xiaohang Xie
Theses
Phenylacetylene and 1-hexyne were polymerized using single-site catalysts, such as zirconocene dichloride, ethylene bis(indenyl) zirconium dichloride, and bis(imino)pyridyl iron(II) chloride. In all cases, methylaluminoxane was used as cocatalyst. The polymerization activities were comparable to those of the conventional titanium tetrabutoxide / aluminum triethyl catalyst and, in some cases, superseded its activities. By FTIR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy, the ratio of cis to trans isomer in the polymer was determined, whereby the catalysts led to formation of more of the cis isomers (57.3%). The polymers were further characterized by Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Ultraviolet Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and solubility …
Effects Of Riparian Forest Buffers On Water Quality In The Canandaigua Lake Watershed, Trish Rider
Effects Of Riparian Forest Buffers On Water Quality In The Canandaigua Lake Watershed, Trish Rider
Theses
As watershed landscapes have been transformed to accommodate agriculture and urbanization, non-point source pollution has emerged as an important environmental issue, and riparian forest buffers (RFB) are recommended to control the flow of pollution into stream ecosystems. The Natural Resources Conservation Service recommends that RFBs have a width of at least 30 meters to protect water quality from surface runoff and non-point source pollution. The water quality, RFBs, and land uses within two tributaries of the Canandaigua Lake Watershed were investigated to determine if a positive correlation exists between water quality and RFB width as well as to determine if …
