Extraction Of Frequency-Dependent Electrical Characteristics Of Biological Tissues Using Ultra-Wideband Electromagnetic Pulse, Michael D. Seymour Jan 2004

Extraction Of Frequency-Dependent Electrical Characteristics Of Biological Tissues Using Ultra-Wideband Electromagnetic Pulse, Michael D. Seymour

Theses

There have been many important contributions to imaging for biomedical applications. The most popular methods include X-ray mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and most recently, microwave imaging. While the first three of these have been used for biomedical applications for over three decades, microwave imaging has seen many developments over the last few years. This is primarily due to the large contrast in electrical parameters between different body tissues (including differences between healthy and diseased tissues) at microwave frequencies. There are also vast improvements possible for the comfort of the patient undergoing such imaging as compared to mammography. However, …

An Analysis Of The Consistency Of Brand Color Reproduction In Print Packaging And Magazine Advertising, Seunga Kang Ha Jan 2004

An Analysis Of The Consistency Of Brand Color Reproduction In Print Packaging And Magazine Advertising, Seunga Kang Ha

Theses

Brand color is one way to represent the identity of the corporation and for the company to advertise itself. The purpose of brand color is to make customers perceive the color, recognize the brand, and ultimately buy products manufactured by the corporation. However, it is not easy to produce the same color through different print media applications because of different processes of color reproduction technology. In the print industry, corporations have controlled brand color tolerance to insure its consistency. However, there is some question as to how the print industry actually performs in maintaining this tolerance through reproduction. The goal …

A Physics-Based Model Of Sic-Based Mesfets, Sankha Mukherjee Jan 2004

A Physics-Based Model Of Sic-Based Mesfets, Sankha Mukherjee

Theses

Silicon Carbide (SiC) has been investigated as an alternative material to Silicon (Si) for enhancing the power-handling capability of semiconductor devices for simultaneous high-temperature and high frequency applications. Its high thermal conductivity, high bandgap, low permittivity, high saturation velocity, moderate mobility, material hardness and chemical inertness make it a prime candidate for power electronics, heat and light sensors, and MEMS applications. The MESFET is the most viable power transistor based on SiC. The performance of SiC MESFETs is limited by trapping and thermal effects. A physics-based analytical model of the SiC MESFET incorporating trapping and thermal effects is reported. The …

Embedded Charge For Microswitch Applications, Joanna Kiljan Jan 2004

Embedded Charge For Microswitch Applications, Joanna Kiljan

Theses

In this work a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) is proposed for radio frequency (RF) switching applications. MEMS devices outperform the traditionally used solid-state devices in areas such as isolation, insertion loss, and linearity. However, micro switches suffer from high actuation voltage, lifetime limitations, and high packaging cost. A novel micro switch design that incorporates embedded charge in a cantilever structure can, in principle, enable low-voltage operation. This was the primary motivation for this study

Design Of A Two-Sensor Camera For Near-Finfrared Aeiral Remote Sensing, Sergio O. Guevara

Theses

The objective of this thesis was to design a color-infrared camera to be used for aerial remote sensing. The design process included obtaining requirements, modeling and analyzing the developed systems for mechanical and thermal stability, and optimization of the system for size and cost. Detailed analysis was required because of the harsh physical environment that airborne cameras are subject to. The solution involved constructing a housing within the limitations of the optical design and a set of chosen off-the-shelf components. These constraints significantly increased the difficulty of achieving the design goals. In the end the original optical design was altered, …

Design, Fabrication And Testing Of Longitudinal Wind Tunnel Balances For Micro Air Vehicle Applications, Andrew T. Walter

Theses

Over the past decade the study of Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) has generated increasing interest due to their potential military, intelligence and civilian applications. One of the primary obstacles in the development of MAVs is the lack of accurate analytical or numerical methods for determining the performance of a particular design. Experimental methods are more prevalent but are difficult to realize because of the large costs and fragility of equipment needed to capture the very small forces associated with MAVs. This research presents the design, implementation and testing of two new wind tunnel balances for capturing longitudinal aerodynamic data (lift, …

Multiprocessor Dsp Implementation Of The Jpeg 2000 Codec, Scott Mayne Jan 2004

Multiprocessor Dsp Implementation Of The Jpeg 2000 Codec, Scott Mayne

Theses

The transition to JPEG2000 from other image formats such as standard JPEG offers im proved compression and image quality, yet has not been widely adopted in practice. This is mainly due to the complexity of the JPEG2000 algorithm. Standard JPEG uses the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Huffmann encoding to achieve its compression, whereas JPEG2000 uses the wavelet transform and arithmetic encoding. Due to the wide acceptance of JPEG, there are processors such as Equator Technology's BSP-15 digital signal processor (DSP) that have been designed with features specifically for JPEG appli cations. For some of the current digital printing applications …

Surface Modification Of Polytetrafluoroethylene (Ptfe) With Vacuum Uv Radiation From Helium Microwave Plasma To Enhance The Adhesion Of Sputtered Copper, Xiaolu Liao

Theses

Teflon® materials are well known for excellent thermal and chemical resistance properties. Their low dielectric constant makes them good materials for substrates in electronic packaging of microsystems where copper is often used as the conductor. Good adhesion between Cu and the hydrophobic PTFE is required in the microelectronics industry. A low-pressure helium MW plasma was used to modify the surface of PTFE located downstream from the plasma. Sometimes, oxygen was flowed over the surface of PTFE. Negligible photo-etching (≤ 1nm/min) was observed. The contact angle of treated PTFE film was found to decrease from an average value of 104° for …

Automatic Error Recovery Using P3 Response Verification For A Brain-Computer Interface, Samuel A. Inverso

Theses

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is an augmentative communication mechanism that does not rely on peripheral nerves or muscles. Current BCIs are error prone and slow with error rates of 10 to 30% and transmission rates of 10-25 bits/min, however, error recovery and correction in BCI has largely been neglected. The focus of this thesis is the development of a method to automatically recover errors in BCI using the P3 brain signal for response verification. The existence of the P3 signal in responses to controlled goal items is shown in an evoked potential BCI used to control items in a virtual …

P-Hip: A Multiresolution Halftoning Algorithm For Progressive Display, Mithun Mukherjee Jan 2004

P-Hip: A Multiresolution Halftoning Algorithm For Progressive Display, Mithun Mukherjee

Theses

This thesis describes and implements an algorithmic framework for memory efficient, 'on-the-fly' halftoning in a progressive transmission environment. Instead of a conventional approach which repeatedly reconstructs the continuous tone image from memory and subsequently halftones it for display, the proposed method achieves significant memory efficiency by storing only the halftoned image and updating it in response to additional information received through progressive transmission. Thus the method requires only a single frame-buffer of bits for storage of the displayed binary image and no additional storage is required for the contone data. The additional image data received through progressive transmission is accommodated …
