The Deaf Sixth Sense: Fact Or Fiction? Deaf Identification By Deaf And Hearing Observers, Sarah Bienias
The Deaf Sixth Sense: Fact Or Fiction? Deaf Identification By Deaf And Hearing Observers, Sarah Bienias
Theses
Many deaf people believe that they possess a "sixth sense" which allows them to intuitively know if another person is deaf or hearing. Research indicating differences in deaf people's mannerisms, language use, and attitudes when compared to hearing people is discussed in this paper. This study tested that theory by videotaping native and non-native users of ASL(both hearing and deaf) in a natural conversation. This videotape was then shown to three groups of subjects - one deaf, one hearing with experience in ASL and Deaf Culture, and one hearing without exposure to ASL and Deaf Culture. The subjects were asked …
Awareness Of False Information: Urban Legends, Erin Fernsler
Awareness Of False Information: Urban Legends, Erin Fernsler
Theses
It is typical for people to believe urban legends. An urban legend is any modern, fictional story, told as truth that reaches a wide audience by being passed from person to person. The study of urban legends helps us be more alert to false information in our everyday lives. There are very limited resources about urban legends and the impact of the stories on deaf culture. There are very few stories that are common in the deaf community. There are plenty of books about urban legends, but none includes deaf people. This is a problem for the deaf students because …
An Interactive Bilingual/Bicultural Approach To Literature Comprehension, Laurie Kettle
An Interactive Bilingual/Bicultural Approach To Literature Comprehension, Laurie Kettle
Theses
With the new popularity of the Bilingual/Bicultural (Bi-Bi) philosophy in Deaf education over the last few decades, one wonders how well the philosophy is succeeding in the classroom, what the philosophy looks like in practical teaching, and how well the philosophy is carrying over into homework time. This master's project covers the rationale for the Bi-Bi movement in Deaf education, as well as showcases current strategies used by English teachers at California School for the Deaf-Fremont. In addition, it contains suggestions for all teachers of the Deaf for implementing a Bi-Bi philosophy and creating in their classrooms a more equal …
Mathematics: It's All About Language, Elizabeth Barrett
Mathematics: It's All About Language, Elizabeth Barrett
Theses
Not many years ago, Hillegeist and Epstein, from Gallaudet University, wrote that 'while there is no question that the increase in difficulty of the mathematical concepts is an important factor in mathematical comprehension and there seems to exist an effect on comprehension specifically related to language. The special role of language in mathematics is a factor in the educational success of deaf students. However, they add that at this point (1987), the nature of the language effect is not completely clear. (Hillegeist&Epstein, 1987). Reading this statement led me to the purpose of this project, which is to review literature that will …
Analyzing Deaf Artists' Artworks: A Curriculum For Middle School Students, Cheryl Murray
Analyzing Deaf Artists' Artworks: A Curriculum For Middle School Students, Cheryl Murray
Theses
This thesis presents a rich context of art information for interpreting artworks of deaf artists. Over the past decade, many artworks have been created by deaf artists. The purpose is to help deaf/hearing children learn about deaf artists and develop critical thinking in a mainstream school. The art curriculum will be presented in Power Point so administrators/educators can have a way to display the art to the students. The background describes how each deaf artist expressed her/his message in their artwork. The curriculum teaches the students how artists use colors, lines shapes, and textures/patterns to express their values and meanings. …
Bridging Communication Within The Mainstream, Kellie Hayes
Bridging Communication Within The Mainstream, Kellie Hayes
Theses
This workshop is intended for hearing professionals who frequently work together within the mainstream to meet the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students as established throughout the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The target audience includes classroom teachers, itinerant teachers of the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and administrators of schools K-12. The development of this workshop began with a review of research relating to the roles of these professionals, communication accommodations for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, and communication considerations of parents with deaf or hard-of-hearing children. The workshop spans three days, and incorporates a range of activities including deafness simulation, role play, …
Incorporating Adventure Education Into Your Classroom, Dana Romanello
Incorporating Adventure Education Into Your Classroom, Dana Romanello
Theses
Approaching outdoor adventure and challenge as a way to teach perseverance, skill, teamwork, leadership, and compassionate service was the brain-child of Kurt Hahn, a native to Berlin, Germany. Hahn became aware of the enormous impact that German submarines had on British ships in the North Sea during World War II. Drawing from his experiences as an educator, he and a team of others devised a program of intensive training for British Seamen. The program became known as Outward Bound, from the nautical term for a ship leaving port on a sea journey. (Sakofs& Armstrong, 1996)
Encouraging Communication With Deaf Children Through Visual Art Activities, Kamila Riscili
Encouraging Communication With Deaf Children Through Visual Art Activities, Kamila Riscili
Theses
An educational product has been developed based on a review of the literature in the field of art therapy with a focus on how art therapy may affect the communication of deaf children. A literature review has indicated that art therapy, when conducted with hearing and deaf children, has facilitated expression and communication. This has occurred through transference of feelings from the right, visualspatial and creative hemisphere of the brain to the left hemisphere, which includes conceptual and intellectual thinking as well as the 'language function.' Based on these findings, it is projected that art therapy may alleviate some of …
Journal Writing Within Deaf Education, Clare Cassidy
Journal Writing Within Deaf Education, Clare Cassidy
Theses
Writing has generally always been a source of resentment, aversion and unhappiness for deaf people. It shouldn't be. When one mentions an English writing course, one would involuntarily envision a long class of boring lectures on parts of speech, sentence structures and know their written paper will return all bloody from those red markers. This has to change, the unconscious fear of English within Deaf people affects their academic, personal and social growth.
Multiculturalism: Role Models For Deaf Students And The Recruiting Practices Of Minority Teachers In Deaf Education, Karen Barkley
Multiculturalism: Role Models For Deaf Students And The Recruiting Practices Of Minority Teachers In Deaf Education, Karen Barkley
Theses
This study examined 22 of the 62 Teachers of the Deaf Educational programs listed in the American Annals of the Deaf (Vol. 142No.2) with regard to recruitment of teachers with minority ethnic backgrounds. The underlying hypothesis is that teachers serve as role models for their students (Deaf, African Americans, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, and Native Americans). Therefore, the ethnicity of all qualified and talented educators should be as diverse as the student population it serves. Thus, the question: Using enrollment as a base to determine the number of minority students qualifying for the professional role as an educator of the deaf, …
Leadership Development Curriculum For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing High School Students, Erin Esposito
Leadership Development Curriculum For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing High School Students, Erin Esposito
Theses
Since the establishment of Public Law 94-142, more and more Deaf and Hard of Hearing students have been placed in mainstreamed educational settings. Several studies done in analyzing student's comfort level, self-esteem, relatedness and participation (Kluwin&Stinson, (1993), Foster (1988), Stinson & Kluwin(1994). Stinson & Liu (1999), have demonstrated critical factors in contributing to both positive and negative educational and social experiences of young Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Repeatedly the themes are similar - communication, self-esteem, participation, cross-cultural issues and so forth - these are all issues which can be addressed through the means of leadership development. While these …
Effective Teaching Strategies In Mathematics And Science, Leslie Snider
Effective Teaching Strategies In Mathematics And Science, Leslie Snider
Theses
Seven teaching strategies identified by Sousa (2001) were examined to develop implications to improve teaching in classrooms for deaf students. A literature review and an analysis of my student teaching experience and two videotapes of experienced teachers were related to Sousa's work. These analyses support the recommendations of Sousa that more active, student-centered activities are more effective with deaf learners. Recommendations are provided to teachers based on the literature review.
Perspectives Of Appropriate Educational Support Services For Non-English Speaking Families Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children: The Ideal And The Real "A Literature Review", Katherine Groves
Theses
It is widely recognized that children with special needs require considerably more help in and out of the classroom in order to achieve access equal to that of children without special needs. A series of laws in the United States has been established to focus on the needs of special needs children (for example: Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act - IDEA - of 1990),and these laws have a significant impact on children who are deaf or hard of hearing (hereafter, deaf). The IDEA (P.L. 101-476& 105-17), for example, has opened the …
Alternative Choices For The Deaf High School Student, Angela Laguardia
Alternative Choices For The Deaf High School Student, Angela Laguardia
Theses
As teachers of the Deaf, it is our responsibility to ensure that our students can succeed in their lives after high school. Today's world revolves around having a college education. But what happens to those who decide not to go down that path? They need to know what their alternatives are should they not attend college. To address those needs, a workshop will be developed to educate deaf high school students about what kinds of jobs are popular and what skills are needed to do those jobs. The workshop will take place once a week for five weeks. The workshop …
Reading By Sound, Sign, Or Spelling, Jacqueline Clegg
Reading By Sound, Sign, Or Spelling, Jacqueline Clegg
Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if deaf college students used a primary recoding strategy during reading. Subjects were divided into two groups of 15. The first group scored 5-7.5 on the California Reading Test and the other group scored 10.5-12. Their use of recoding strategies was tested through a letter cancellation task and a word recall task. Using the paragraphs from Baker (1984), the subjects were also tested for metacognitive skills during reading. A background survey allowed us to review any unusual cases or to relate findings to background characteristics. Results compared to a hearing control group …
Deaf Students And Problem Solving In Mathematics, Heather Maltzan
Deaf Students And Problem Solving In Mathematics, Heather Maltzan
Theses
Currently, there exists a gap between findings in the research in mathematics education of deaf students and subsequent changes in educational settings for deaf students. Problem solving skills has become an area of particular concern. Deaf students' performance on problem solving tasks and word problems falls below that of their hearing counterparts. The research into the causes is organized into four broad categories: language and communication, semantic and conceptual understanding or cognition, the effects of educational environment or experience, and testing of proposed strategies. The implications of these research including reading, vocabulary, conceptual understanding, teacher preparation, incorporation of the Standards, …

Cochlear Implants: A Tips & Reference Guide For Teachers Working With Students Using Cis, Thomas Ohl
Theses
Like a stampede, the cochlear implant (CI) has taken the worlds of deaf and hardof- hearing persons by storm. From its inception in the mid 1980's, some have embraced the technology as a miracle cure, while others have thought of it as cultural genocide. Yet, today, many would argue that the implant has come and is here to stay. There are many teachers with students using implants who feel inadequately prepared to deal with this technology. You might be one of them. If you are, this booklet is for you...keep reading! This book will provide you with skills and expertise …
History Of Idea And The Impact On Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Adam Garfinkel
History Of Idea And The Impact On Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Adam Garfinkel
Theses
My master's project focuses on the main federal special education law- the Reauthorization of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments (IDEA- 1997)- that was due to be reauthorized in the year 2002. The reauthorization bill was left unapproved because the United States Congress has had more urgent legislation involving war with Iraq, the national security of our nation and its citizens and the global war on terrorism, Medicare, the high rate of unemployment and a huge growing deficit. It is timely to investigate the current law because the educational issues of children with disabilities have not been met yet. It …
Cooking Curriculum For Individuals With Disabilities, Patricia Bogardus
Cooking Curriculum For Individuals With Disabilities, Patricia Bogardus
Theses
Since the passing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), an increasing number of students are being mainstreamed into public schools. As a result, the percentage of students with secondary disabilities in schools for the deaf is increasing. Therefore, strong life skill curriculums are necessary in the schools. "Contrary to popular belief, people aff1icted with mental retardation and learning disabilities are capable of and enjoy preparing foodstuff," (Cox, 1981). Cooking is a skill that every person should have. A cookbook designed for individuals with disabilities will help individuals become more independent. A visual step-by-step cookbook will enable individuals with …

Social Issues Facing Deaf Students In Mainstream Education, Jennifer Lunney
Social Issues Facing Deaf Students In Mainstream Education, Jennifer Lunney
Theses
This review examined the serious impact social isolation can have for the mainstreamed deaf student. When considering a successful high school experience, one must consider both the academic and social components. It is proposed here that the isolation a deaf student typically experiences will greatly impact their identity and self-esteem. Additionally, this review examined the role of the unwritten curriculum, the issue of a least, restrictive environment, identity and socialization/isolation factors, and teaching strategies as they relate to mainstream education. Deaf students face barriers in the mainstream that are often overlooked by teachers and parents. This review consolidates and highlights the …

A Meta-Analysis Of Demographic Characteristics And Learning By Deaf Students, Megan Fabich
A Meta-Analysis Of Demographic Characteristics And Learning By Deaf Students, Megan Fabich
Theses
This study is designed to identify those educational, communication and demographic characteristics which serve as predictors of student performance on college entrance exams as well as their comprehension learning via interpreted lectures at the college level. A database was created for 509 deaf students using information from 33 different demographic areas. A series of statistical analyses including multiple regressions were performed, none of which yielded statistically significant findings, despite their considerable power. These results indicate that deaf students' academic success is not pre-determined by anyone characteristic or combination of easily identifiable characteristics.
Alcohol Awareness Education In The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Classroom, Julie Wainman
Alcohol Awareness Education In The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Classroom, Julie Wainman
Theses
It has often been pointed out that education/prevention curricula in the schools has not accommodated the communication skills of deaf or hard of hearing students and have often been insensitive to their culture. For example, the lessons are frequently presented in a language that the deaf student cannot understand. Furthermore, it has been indicated that there is a need for further study focusing on alcohol abuse by deaf adolescents and its contributing factors. There is also a need to recognize that the deaf population has been mostly overlooked in terms of understanding that they are at-risk and changes need to …
Expressing Negation In Chinese Sign Language, Jun Yang
Expressing Negation In Chinese Sign Language, Jun Yang
Theses
This research project paper presents my observations and analysis of the expression of negation in Chinese Sign Language (CSL). I interviewed 15 Chinese Deaf adults in Beijing, China and videotaped those interviews. Some expressions of negation in CSL are similar to those found in other sign languages (e.g., ASL, BSL, and International Sign Language) in their linguistic aspects (e.g. non-manual signals, negative signs, and structures of negative sentences). On the other hand, I discovered that CSL has some unique features in the expression of negation. For example, there is a negative handshape, a fist with the little finger extended, the …
