History Textbooks: Modifying So That Each Deaf Student May Learn With Ease, Jason Kulchinsky Sep 2005

History Textbooks: Modifying So That Each Deaf Student May Learn With Ease, Jason Kulchinsky

Theses

The general goal for this project was to demonstrate how to modify history textbooks for the subject area of Social Studies. My experiences at internships recognized needs at the middle school level to have revised textbooks for students of normal intelligences but below-grade-level reading skills. However, practical problems obtaining a sample of children at the middle school level prevented me from demonstrating the problem or the solution at that level. So the goal of this project was to illustrate the process and the potential positive outcomes by using first-year college students instead. I expected the benefits to be similar at …

The Relationship Between Preferred Language/Communication Modality And English Literacy Among Deaf First-Year College Students, Matthew Kelly Sep 2005

The Relationship Between Preferred Language/Communication Modality And English Literacy Among Deaf First-Year College Students, Matthew Kelly

Theses

This study examines the relationship between the communication modality preferences and reading skills for a group of 1,419 deaf first-year college students. These students were enrolled between the years 1984 and 2002 at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology. First, the relationship between self reported preference for communication and performance on a standardized assessment of English literacy is examined. Second, the relationship between self-rated sign language skills and reading performance is explored for the same group. Students prefering "Speech Alone" performed significantly better on the measure of reading ability than students prefering "Sign …

A Study Of Perceptions Of Mathematics Signs: Implications For Teaching, Paul Glaser Sep 2005

A Study Of Perceptions Of Mathematics Signs: Implications For Teaching, Paul Glaser

Theses

There is increasing importance being placed on the role mathematics signs play in teaching and learning in the classroom. Potential ramifications of invented signs on teaching and learning need to be investigated. Many teachers have different signs for certain mathematics terms and it is possible that a lack of standardization may influence learning. There is a particular need to investigate perceptions of technical signs in order to help prepare new teachers who pursue careers in mathematics education for the deaf. The present project was designed to assist new and experienced mathematics teachers and interpreters for the deaf as well as …

Analysis of 32 first year teacher candidates' comments were recorded, providing explanatory and receptive observations of the experienced teachers in real classrooms. The analysis indicates that observations of certain behaviors of the experienced teachers provide valuable insight into effective and efficient means of educating deaf students in grades 5 through 10. The evaluations were - based on four criteria, (1) Best practices in Classroom Instruction, (2) …

The Social Studies Classroom: Attitudes And Perspective From The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students Through Literature, Amanda Sievers

Theses

Millions of children attend elementary, middle and high schools throughout the country to be instructed by teachers within six major subjects. Out of six main subjects taught in academic schools, social studies has been proven as one of the most difficult yet complex subjects among students especially the deaf and hard of hearing students. It has been noted where social studies, elaborate and diverse as it may be, have created an environment where most students have the tendency to associate this subject with negative attitudes and experiences. Critical factors contribute to the overall decline interest in socials studies such as …

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention In Emotionally And Behaviorally Disturbed Deaf Adolescent Populations, Robert Feol Sep 2005

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention In Emotionally And Behaviorally Disturbed Deaf Adolescent Populations, Robert Feol

Theses

It is through a combination of experience in working with local human service agencies as a behavioral therapist and consultant for a crisis support team, as well as my experience working and studying at NTID that I became interested in a little researched topic known as Therapeutic Crisis Intervention. As such, I reduced that to an even smaller population, specifically, Deaf and hard of Hearing adolescents, who exhibit a display of severe to profound emotional and behavior problems. As my investigation shows, successful methods for working with such a unique population do exist and have research to support them, but …

Proposal: An Enhanced Reading Program For Young Deaf/Hh Students, Amanda Beauchamp Sep 2005

Proposal: An Enhanced Reading Program For Young Deaf/Hh Students, Amanda Beauchamp

Theses

Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing face a tough challenge when it comes to the development of reading skills in young deaf children. Every classroom with deaf students has the potential to include a diversity of students with various linguistic backgrounds/abilities. Every deaf child's individual exposure to language has a direct effect on his/her literacy development. It then becomes the teacher's responsibility to assess each student's experience with language and linguistic ability and create a reading program suitable to the needs of the students in her classroom. After much research and some experience in the field, it is …

Clear and effective communication is critically important to both students' learning in school and their success in future careers. Proposed Project Activities: This project will develop and …

Teaching Science To Deaf Students: Resources For Teachers In Kindergarten To Fifth Grade, Susan Coil Sep 2005

Teaching Science To Deaf Students: Resources For Teachers In Kindergarten To Fifth Grade, Susan Coil

Theses

Research indicates that many new teachers encounter hindrances to implementing the type of researched-based, state-of-the-art teaching methodologies for science instruction in the elementary grades, which they had learned about in their teacher preparation programs (Kane, 1994). Concerns have also been expressed about teacher preparation in the science education of deaf students (Lang & Propp, 1982; Lang, 1994, 1996). The present project is designed to assist new and inexperienced teachers in minimizing constraints to the implementation of an effective K-5 science curriculum, particularly in educational programs serving deaf students. In the present paper, some ofthe hindrances to implementing the best practices …

This curriculum is expected to take a month to conduct and the students will be able to learn about how two time periods are similar to one another but yet different.

Guidelines For Parents On Homeschooling Deaf Children, Kalpana Varia Sep 2005

Guidelines For Parents On Homeschooling Deaf Children, Kalpana Varia

Theses

Many families have turned their family room into classrooms. In 1993, homeschooling became legal in all 50 states, when the number of students staying at home for schooling tripled. This trend continues today because parents want to retain control over the education and socialization of their children. Homeschooling refers to education of school-age children with their parents' guiding, directing, and monitoring them. It replaces full-time attendance at a traditional school. Parents express various reasons for educating their children at home; individualization, family time, strong academic, moral, and religious foundations. The problem with homeschooling, for parents of deaf children, is the …

Meanwhile, many educators believe that parental involvement is imperative in education. Possible types of parental involvement are; for example, communicating with the teachers, participating in the classrooms with the students on their homework, and being actively involved in IEP meetings and other kinds of meetings.

Bilingual Education: Is It Feasible In Deaf Education?, Kristina Himmelsbach

Theses

Bilingual/Bicultural programs are being implemented across the United States with varying degrees of effectiveness. Much of the research documenting the success and failures of such programs are performed in a typical mainstream program where English is the target language. Despite the fact that there are limited studies done in residential schools for the Deaf and hard of hearing, bilingual/bicultural programs are strongly advocated for such settings based on the success of the studies done in the mainstream programs. Due to the fact that bilingual programs do not necessarily mean that there is a bicultural component and that a bicultural program …
