This research examines the psychological and sociological variables that predict whether an abused wife will leave or remain with an abusive partner. The author evaluates four primary theoretical frameworks: masochism theory, learned helplessness theory, modeling theory, and intrafamily victimization theory. To test hypotheses generated by these theories, in-depth interviews were conducted with fifty randomly selected clients from a center for abused women in St. Louis.

The study identifies three major factors that significantly predict an abused wife’s decision to leave:

Four hundred twenty-five women religious from one order, residing in the midwestern states of Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, Texas and Louisiana, were mailed a questionnaire designed to determine the amount of stress experienced in one year, and the amount of illness suffered by those same persona during the same time period. Two hundred fourteen sisters responded to the questionnaire. Analysis of data by age groups revealed positive correlations between life stress and illness. Comparison of illness score between older and younger sisters showed no significant differences. Young sister tended to have high stress and illness scores, whereas older sisters had lower …

The roles of scale, contrast and spectral difference in visual detection and recognition was investigated. Geometrical target arrays were produced and projected using a rear projection apparatus. Scale was varied using combined photographic reduction and slide projection. Contrast levels were adjusted in projection of lithographic target arrays using neutral density filtration arrangements in the projection apparatus. Interimage effects have long been recognized as a factor in the reproduction of color. Reversal materials are no exception and exhibit interimage effects which have previously been revealed through techniques using END analysis. This study presents a method for revealing the presence of interimage effects in a reversal film's Modulation Transfer Function. Utilizing filtering techniques, two dyes of a three color transparency are eliminated from the final image by exposure and development. A cuprous oxide emulsion was made using noodling and washing emulsion making techniques. An attempt to use phthalated gelatin and coagulation washing resulted in the formation of cuprous hydroxide and destruction of the phthalated gel molecule and lack of coagulation within the emulsion. Cuprous oxide was also slurried with water and coated onto unglazed porcelain plates. The density-log exposure relationship was linear for the cuprous oxide slurry and non-linear for the cuprous oxide emulsion. The cuprous oxide film gave a speed value twenty-five times greater than that obtained with the slurry. The cuprous oxide dismutation system possesses great variability and …
