Finite Element Analysis Of Embedded Blood Vessel Mechanics, I-En Lin Apr 1989

Finite Element Analysis Of Embedded Blood Vessel Mechanics, I-En Lin

Theses

Cardiac pump function is closely linked to myocardial oxygen supply during the cardiac cycle. Variations in cardiac output must be met with concurrent shifts in tissue blood flow if changing myocardial oxygen requirements are to be satisfied. Of particular importance is the adequate perfusion of the left ventricular myocardium. Experimental evidence indicates that some ninety percent of left ventricular oxygen demand is generated during systolic contraction of the myocardium. Paradoxically, blood flow measurements in the left coronary artery suggest minimal systolic perfusion. The asynchronous, phasic character of left coronary blood flow and myocardial oxygen demand has prompted much research into …

Study Of Steel-Concrete Interface Behavior Of Reinforced Concrete Members, Jun Wan

Theses

The main objective of this thesis work is to study the steel-concrete interface behavior of reinforced concrete members using the nonlinear finite element method.

The reinforced concrete member was modeled as a continuum consisting of plane stress rectangular elements which represent the concrete, pin-joint two node bar elements which represent the reinforcing steel, and the nondimensional linkage elements which represent the bond stress-slip, aggregate interaction and dowel action effects. The load increment procedure is employed to carry out the nonlinear analysis.

An axially loaded tensile specimen, a deep beam specimen and a shallow beam specimen were analyzed. The results from …

A Methodology For Designing Spacecraft Onboard Processing Systems, Mohammad Nadeem Ahmad Jan 1989

A Methodology For Designing Spacecraft Onboard Processing Systems, Mohammad Nadeem Ahmad

Theses

A three layer methodology is presented for designing spacecraft onboard computer systems. The system design is perceived as a sequence of three hierarchical layers: the Dedicated Processing Layer, the Application and Support Processing Layer, and the Communications Processing Layer. Each layer implements a distinct set of functions and offers services at different levels of abstraction. As opposed to the ISO/OSI Reference Model, where the prime objective is to implement peripheral interaction between two systems, the layered approach used here is to address the problems in system design itself. The problem is approached in a bottom-up fashion, starting with the description …

A Study Of The Effect Of Oil Added To Toray Driographic Ink On Toning In The Non-Image Areas Of Toray Company's Negative Working Driographic Plates, Joseph El-Yabroudi Jan 1989

A Study Of The Effect Of Oil Added To Toray Driographic Ink On Toning In The Non-Image Areas Of Toray Company's Negative Working Driographic Plates, Joseph El-Yabroudi

Theses

Several studies and investigations have been conducted to test the new Toray plate. The studies revealed that the new plate eliminated many of the problems that used to hinder the progress and development of the driographic plate system. The two major problems with this plate were short run lengths and toning in the non-image areas. This study investigates toning problems in negative working Toray plates. Toning is a term that refers to the non-image areas of the driographic plate that are accepting ink. Previous studies have shown that ink tack and flow do not affect toning in any way. However, …

The Dfs Distributed File System: Design And Implementation, Ananth K. Rao Jan 1989

The Dfs Distributed File System: Design And Implementation, Ananth K. Rao

Theses

This thesis describes the design of an operating system independent distributed file system (DFS) and details the implementation, on a cooperating set of server computers interconnected by means of a communications network. The DFS provides the mechanism by which the file systems of these physically dispersed units are integrated into a single logical unit. Users and application programs thus have the illusion that their files are on a single computer system, even though in reality they may be physically distributed around the network. This location transparency frees users from having to remember details such as the current location of the …

Computing Techniques For The Enumeration Of Cyclic Steiner Systems, Timothy Frenz Carl Jan 1989

Computing Techniques For The Enumeration Of Cyclic Steiner Systems, Timothy Frenz Carl

Theses

In this thesis a powerful algorithm is developed for finding cyclic Steiner systems. A cyclic Steiner system with parameters S(t,k,v) is a pair ( V,B), where B is a collection of subsets all of size k (called blocks) and V is a t; element set of points, such that each t-subset of V is contained in precisely one block of B. A Steiner system is called cyclic if it has an automorphism carrying the points in a v-cycle. The results obtained so far with this algorithm are given in Table VII of chapter 5. Among the values reported there, are …

The model is based upon the monocoque center section for an automotive space structure and was constructed using STTF 63 plate elements. In each case study, the model was divided into a different substructure configuration. In the configurations used, the model was divided into one, two, three and four substructures, respectively. In each case study, a series of modal analyses was performed for …

Performance Issues In Mid-Sized Relational Database Machines, Larry Sullivan Jan 1989

Performance Issues In Mid-Sized Relational Database Machines, Larry Sullivan

Theses

Relational database systems have provided end users and application programmers with an improved working environment over older hierarchial and networked database systems. End users now use interactive query languages to inspect and manage their data. And application programs are easier to write and maintain due to the separation of physical data storage information from the application program itself. These and other benefits do not come without a price however. System resource consumption has long been the perceived problem with relational systems. The additional resource demands usually force computing sites to upgrade existing systems or add additional facilities. One method of …

Pay Equity: The Time Is Now, Stephanie Ann Nowack Jan 1989

Pay Equity: The Time Is Now, Stephanie Ann Nowack

Theses

The thesis "Pay Equity: The Time Is Now" by Stephanie Ann Nowak explores the persistent issue of wage disparity between men and women in the United States. Highlighting historical and societal factors, Nowak examines how traditional gender roles have contributed to systemic pay inequities, with women consistently earning less than men in comparable positions. This wage gap, exacerbated by societal expectations and occupational segregation, has been perpetuated by entrenched biases that undervalue women’s work, even in fields requiring similar skills to male-dominated roles.

Nowak discusses the impact of landmark legislation, such as the Equal Pay Act of 1964, which aimed …

SQLSDM provides a more semantically complete RDBMS through the implementation of a Domain and Relational Integrity scheme. SQLSDM provides integrity definition functions and a sub-system to interpret SQL commands . Integrity system tables are created through the use of SQLSDM ' s domain definition command and SQL ' s "CREATE TABLE" command. As SQL database update commands are interpreted, SQLSDM uses these integrity tables to enforce domain and referential integrity. SQLSDM operates virtually transparent to the user and provides for greater database consistency and …

Effects Of Irradiation On The Rate Of Water Vapor Transmission Of Food Packaging Materials, Reginald L. A. Vas Jan 1989

Effects Of Irradiation On The Rate Of Water Vapor Transmission Of Food Packaging Materials, Reginald L. A. Vas

Theses

Food can be preserved by irradiation which is the exposure of food to ionising radiation, high energy electron from electron beams or X-rays or gamma rays from Cobalt-60 or Cesium-137 radioisotopes. Irradiation does not leave a residue in the food and it does not make it radioactive. The low level energy levels of Cobalt and Cesium isotopic gamma rays does not induce any radioactivity. Irradiation has the same preservative effect on food as heat treatment, but because irradiation does not appreciably raise the temperature of the food, it is known as 'cold sterilization'.

Irradiation can potentially be used to preserve …
