Adsorption On Activated Flyash, John William Kubarewicz
Adsorption On Activated Flyash, John William Kubarewicz
Theses
An experimental study was undertaken to compare the adsorptive characteristics of activated carbon, flyash, and activated flyash. Due to the contradictory evidence available in the literature, emphasis was placed on the effect of acid activation on the physical properties of the adsorbent. The experiment consisted of two parts; batch isotherm studies, and continuous column operations. An artificial sewage composed of a mixture of deionized water and beef broth was used as the adsorbate. This solution was prepared daily and exerted a COD of 225 ± 30 mg/l. Flyash activation was found to increase the degree of adsorption indirectly rather than …
Identification Thresholds Of The Human Visual System For An Alphanumeric Resolution Test Object, Mark Bobb
Identification Thresholds Of The Human Visual System For An Alphanumeric Resolution Test Object, Mark Bobb
Theses
Many investigations of the detection threshold of the human visual system have been conducted, and a few recognition threshold studies can be found, however no identification threshold data are available. This paper documents research on the observer's identification threshold for an alphanumeric resolution test object presented at various average luminance levels, contrasts, and contrast polarities. These factors affected the identification threshold in a similar way to the effects they exert on the observer's detection and recognition thresholds; the test object contrast being the most significant factor. Direct numerical comparisons between the various thresholds were not possible due to the large …
The Chemical Effect Of Ultrasound On Cyanide Solutions, Nabil R. Zaki
The Chemical Effect Of Ultrasound On Cyanide Solutions, Nabil R. Zaki
Theses
An experimental study was undertaken to investigate the chemical effects of high intensity ultrasonic radiation on cyanide solutions. The effects of aeration, concentration of cyanide and temperatures on the reaction rate are investigated. The experiment was preformed in a 30 mm pyrex tube immersed at a fixed height in a constant volume water bath. Ultrasonic energy was applied through the use of a transducer epoxied at the bottom of the water bath. The power inputs to the transducer were 40W (27KHz) and 100W (21KHz).
At a power of 40W, ultrasound had no chemical effect on cyanide solutions. At 100W, hydrogen …
The Effect Of Blue Base Tint On The Sensitivity And Acutance Of X-Ray Films, Michael Klein
The Effect Of Blue Base Tint On The Sensitivity And Acutance Of X-Ray Films, Michael Klein
Theses
An experiment was devised to quantitatively measure the effect of blue base tint (inherent in most medical x ray films) on the sensitivity and acutance of an x ray film. Results showed no significant difference due to the blue base tint for sensitivity. However, a significant difference was found for the base tint's effect on acutance of an x ray film. It was determined that the difference in acutance was due to an "anti–halation effect" of the blue base dye.
A Kinetic Study Of Lysine And Lysine Derivatives, Stephen Joseph Stanley
A Kinetic Study Of Lysine And Lysine Derivatives, Stephen Joseph Stanley
Theses
The kinetics of the reaction of iodoacetamide with lysine, polylysine, N-α-Acetyl lysine, and N-ε-Acetyl lysine, have been studied. The investigation was done at 23° C ± 123° C, as a function of pH, and concentration. In all cases it was noted that the rate of reaction increased as the pH increased. The rate data was analyzed in order to obtain the second order rate constants. In addition, the effects of the reactive site's environment on the rate was demonstrated.

Absorption Of Methoxyflurane By Conductive Rubber And Polyethylene Anesthetic Hose, Edward A. Kippel
Theses
This thesis presents the results of an investigation into the absorption of methoxyflurane by conductive rubber and polyethylene anesthetic hose. Previous studies are reviewed and theoretical considerations governing the diffusion process are discussed.
Diffusion coefficients are calculated for commercially available hose materials using different anesthetic concentrations and oxygen flow rates.
Data obtained is compared with the results of previous investigations (primarily concerned with sorption into rubber hose) and similar results are presented for polyethylene hose.
Graphical data is used to demonstrate the effect of hose material on inspired anesthetic concentration.
The advantage of disposable conductive polyethylene hose over reusable rubber …
Multispectral Techniques Applied To Photomicrography, William Richard Mueller
Multispectral Techniques Applied To Photomicrography, William Richard Mueller
Theses
Based upon an objects absorbtion and reflection characteristics to varying amounts of radiation, a series of selective wavelength band exposures were made for color separation of a microscopic specimen. The exposures axe made to record the specimens characteristic transmission or reflection patterns as a visible density value. The exposeures were made in a overlapping band width manner. The exposures were in the blue, green, and red regions of the spectrum. The resultant negetives were printed on Polycontrast paper using filter No. 2. The main purpose of the experiment was the design of a photographic system to remove the biological step …
Measurement Of Volume Scattering Functions In Turbid Water And Its Correlation With Mtf Degradation, Richard Hart, Michael Mcdonald
Measurement Of Volume Scattering Functions In Turbid Water And Its Correlation With Mtf Degradation, Richard Hart, Michael Mcdonald
Theses
Scattering of light in turbid water is a major source of image degradation. The intention of this experiment was to construct a small angle scattering meter and measure the volume scattering functions for specific turbid conditions. These experimentally derived volume scattering functions were used to correlate a mathematical modulation transfer function derivation with previously measured modulation transfer functions for a specific turbid medium. Due to design shortcomings, errors were produced in the production of the volume scattering functions. This produced a lack of correlation between our mathematically derived MTF's and those measured in the past. The validity of the mathematical …
Size Distribution Analysis Of Polydisperse, Monodisperse, And Chemically Mixed Polymer Latex Systems Via A Combination Of Light Scattering And Ultracentrifugation Techniques, Robert Cembrola
Theses
The use of angular light scattering techniques has proved to be of the highest precision for the size distribution analysis of colloidal size spheres, but is inherently limited to quite narrow, monomodal size distributions of particles of a single chemical component. These limitations can be overcome to a limited degree by a technique that utilizes light scattering and a preparative ultracentrifuge. The latter fractionates the colloidal particles according to density (i.e., chemical com position) and/or size. Applying the zonal ultracentrifugation technique, both types of separation take place in the presence of a density gradient and ultimately fractionated samples are obtained …
Biocatalytic Oxidation Of Nitrilotriacetate, Saul Hammerman
Biocatalytic Oxidation Of Nitrilotriacetate, Saul Hammerman
Theses
The specific scope of this work is to study the biological and chemical effects of a single genetic strain of bacteria, Bacillus subtilis #9524, on the specific destruction to innocuous products of sodium nitrilotriacetate (NTA) and sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). Insofar as the same strain of bacteria was used each time, under limited variability and sterile conditions, the side effects of multiple bacterial strains and their inter-relationships among themselves and the organic substrates are eliminated. This has allowed for excellent replication of results.
This is a generalized technique for the evaluation of the biodegradability of a compound. Whereas tests with activated …
The Photolysis Of P-Xylene In An Aqueous Environment, Joseph Daniel Lintott
The Photolysis Of P-Xylene In An Aqueous Environment, Joseph Daniel Lintott
Theses
The photolysis of p-xylene in several aqueous solutions was studied as a model for removing refractory organic pollutants from water, and to demonstrate that photochemical reaction of these compounds may be an important factor in their degradation in the environment.
Solutions of p-xylene in deaerated water, water saturated with oxygen, 0.05M sodium phosphate tribasic, 0.1M sodium nitrate and 3.28X10-4M ferric sulfate were exposed to ultraviolet and visible radiation. p-Xylene in 3.28X10-4M ferric sulfate was also exposed to sunlight. The reaction rate was determined by measuring the disappearance of the p-xylene.
In all of the photolyses, except …
The Photolysis Of Chlorobenzene In An Aqueous Environment, Louis John Del Tufo
The Photolysis Of Chlorobenzene In An Aqueous Environment, Louis John Del Tufo
Theses
Chlorobenzene was chosen as a model system for the study of photochemically induced reactions in an aqueous environment. It was the goal of this research to achieve a reaction system which best approximates conditions existing in the environment. To do this, a basic model system was established, and then the effect on the rate by various parameters was studied. These parameters, which included the presence of oxygen and such inorganic compounds as might be present in receiving waters, (e.g. nitrate, sulfate, and phosphate), were chosen so as to meet the goal of this research.
Kinetic data was obtained for seven …

The Use Of Thin Layer Chromatography (Tlc) In Qualitative And Quantitative Determinations Of Photographic Developing Agents (In Developer Solution) Using A Scanning Densitometer, Michael Gilbert
Theses
TLC was used, for qualitative and quantitative analysis of photographic developing agents hydroquinone, metol, phenidone, para phenylenediamine, para aminophenol, ascorbic acid and the oxidized species. Experimental conditions and procedures for reporting Rf values of the aqueous solutions of the developing agent were standardized. Quantitative TLC was done for hydroquinone. The density maxima obtained from the scanning densitometric trace of the eluted and visualized chromatogram was correlated to the concentration of the hydroquinone. Aqueous solutions of hydroquinone were prepared at four levels of concentration, three levels of pH and two levels of sodium sulfite concentration for quantitative analysis using TLC.
Separation Of Glucose - Fructose - Water Systems Via Thermal Parametric Pumping, Zikri Mostafa Ahmed
Separation Of Glucose - Fructose - Water Systems Via Thermal Parametric Pumping, Zikri Mostafa Ahmed
Theses
Series of experiments were carried out to determine the effect of different factors on adsorption from aqueous solutions of sugar using fuller's earth ( LW 16-30 Mesh ) as an adsorbent. The equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir's equation., and an explanation for the deviation of some of these data has been given.
Systems of glucose-fructose and water mixtures were subjected to semi-continuous and continuous parametric pumping operations using activated carbon (400 Filterasorb) as an adsorbent. The results obtained confirm the equilibrium theory of the parametric pump and essentially fulfill the requirements established by Chen and Hill (6) to …
Diffusion Studies With Novel Plastics, Marion Toohey Conway
Diffusion Studies With Novel Plastics, Marion Toohey Conway
Theses
The rates of diffusion through two fluorinated groups and two non-fluorinated groups of laboratory prepared membranes were compared with each other and with commercially available cellulose membranes. The membranes.were evaluated, in particular, for possible use with the artificial kidney. Diffusion experiments were conducted with sodium chloride, urea and uric acid. Experimental results were compared to diffusion coefficients calculated in the literature for cellulose membranes. The results show that the rates of diffusion of all of the solutes tested for the laboratory prepared membranes are comparable to that of the cellulose membranes. The fluorinated group had a slightly higher diffusion coefficient …

Preparation Of Malachite Green Leucocyanide And A Study Of The Effects Of Dye Impurities, Paul Dennis Berg
Preparation Of Malachite Green Leucocyanide And A Study Of The Effects Of Dye Impurities, Paul Dennis Berg
Theses
Using a modification of a preparation method published by Tobin, Katzakian, and Chisholm, the photochromic leucocyanide of malachite green dye was prepared in a pure form. This leucocyanide was doped with various amounts of the dye as an impurity and the effect of the dye on the photolysis and fade reactions tested.
It was determined that the dye has the effect of merely masking the leucocyanide during photolysis exposure but does chemically increase the completeness of the fade reaction.
The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani
The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani
Theses
The fate of Hazardous Polluting. Substances (HPS) in an aqueous environment has been investigated using ultraviolet light. Chlorobenzene, o-cresol and nitrobenzene were used as model HPS for this study. The kinetics were followed and good first order plots were obtained for all compounds. The temperature of the reaction was shown to effect the rate. Solid insoluble and soluble non-volatile products were formed in the photolytic reaction of the three model systems.

Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano
Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano
Theses
A sanitary landfill was simulated by placing "refuse" between two layers of soil in 6" by 24" cylinders. Canine nutriment was used to simulate the refuse. Once the refuse began to decompose, the decomposition gases were collected in a gas cell and analyzed in an Infrared Spectrophotometer. When gas samples were not taken, the decomposition gases were vented through a water trap (to prevent air from backing up into the system) into the atmosphere. Distilled water was added and withdrawn at two week intervals to leach out the pollutants.
From the Infrared analysis, the decomposition gases were determined to be …
Effectiveness Of Training Programs For Graduate Engineers, V.C. Rajashekar
Effectiveness Of Training Programs For Graduate Engineers, V.C. Rajashekar
Theses
This thesis represents an investigation of effectiveness as a result of engineering training. The basic elements of effectiveness and its learning process are explained and said that the effectiveness could be learnt and improved.
The term training, is basically the process of education and training. But training cannot be performed as an individual, but is performed as a group. Therefore training a group with having so many individuals needs careful consideration in designing a training program.
In order to get the broadest possible picture of current thinking and current activity in the area of company training programs for graduate engineers, …
The Reaction Of P-Nitrophenyl Acetate With Lysine Hydrochloride And Poly-1-Lysine Hydrobromide, Emmanuel Plange Matteer
The Reaction Of P-Nitrophenyl Acetate With Lysine Hydrochloride And Poly-1-Lysine Hydrobromide, Emmanuel Plange Matteer
Theses
The reactions of p-nitrophenylacetate with L-lysine hydrochloride and poly-L-lysine hydrobromide as a function of pH were investigated.
The results indicate that both compounds react with the substrate in the pH range 7.0-10.0 with an apparent optimum pH in the region near 9.65.
Poly-L-lysine reacts more rapidly over the entire pH range investigated than does L-lysine.

A Photomicrographic Method For The Detection Of Oxygen Content In The Hemoglobin Of The Red Blood Cell, Bruce Martin Levine, Craig Sager
A Photomicrographic Method For The Detection Of Oxygen Content In The Hemoglobin Of The Red Blood Cell, Bruce Martin Levine, Craig Sager
Theses
Previous attempts at photographing the hemoglobin in the red blood cells have been confined to the making of two separate images of the same blood sample; one image is recorded using a wavelength band in the isobestic point region of the spectral distribution of oxygenated and reduced blood, and the other image is made using a wavelength band of radiation in the area of greatest difference in absorption between the two blood states. The method described here attempts to obtain a measurement of oxygenation by means of only one exposure using both regions of wavelengths simultaneously. The response is the …
