A study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of various sewage treatment facilities in the Hackensack Meadowlands District. The study dealt with overall plant efficiencies based on percent removals of suspended solids and Biochemical Oxygen Demand although other parameters were also included.

Samples for this study were obtained from the inlet and outlet channels of the individual plants. The parameters studied were: Suspended Solids, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Total Nitrogen, Nitrate-Nitrite Compounds, Total Organic Carbon, Orthophosphate-P, Total Oxygen Demand and Fecal Coliform. Results obtained were averaged so as to collectively represent wet and dry weather conditions.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the combustion products of KYNOL and NOMEX as a fire retardant fibers. From the quantitative analysis data of the combustion products, the polymer structure is discussed and the property of thermal stability is explained.

From the analysis of the combustion products, the toxicity indices for the two fibers are determined. It is found to be 0.1 for KYNOL and 0.71 for NOMEX. This can be interpreted to mean that, if one gram of MIDI, is decomposed and the combustion products were diffused in one cubic meter of air, the probability of dying …

This paper describes two methods utilizing the transmission electron microscope for studying the structural characteristics of photographic silver halide grains: (1) direct observation and subsequent determination of the grain size-frequency distribution for a given emulsion and (2) the carbon replica technique for studying the external structure of the grains. Based on existing information concerning the effects of pressure on the biodegradability of sanitary sewage, a model activated sludge reactor was used in conjunction with pressurization to determine the viability of pressurization as a primary sewage treatment process.

Municipal sewage samples were pressurized at 40 psig for one hour with an excess of oxygen. An air compressor and a steel drum were used for sample pressurization. A non-pressurized control sample was maintained. After pressurization, the samples were fed into separate model activated sludge reactors. Biodegradability of both types of effluent was measured by determining their five day biochemical oxygen demands …

A study of the emulsification process of lithographic ink and water was conducted to investigate methods for determining the water content of lithographic ink and water emulsions. Experiments using infra-red spectroscopy and analysis of the hydroxyl and carbonyl absorption bands revealed several variables which must be considered when attempting to use infra-red spectroscopic methods for the determination of the water content of ink emulsions. The company has been sending to the sewer the filtrate from one of our chemical processes. This filtrate contains 63 vol. % methanol. The recovery of this methanol would reduce the amount of purchased methanol. The recovery would also reduce the Biological Oxygen Demand of the plant effluent. In the near future the local sewer authority will be billing the company for BOD.
