Incineration Of Solid/Liquid Human Waste, Theodore Joseph Wayne Jun 1971

Incineration Of Solid/Liquid Human Waste, Theodore Joseph Wayne

Theses

This thesis encompasses the design criteria required to produce an effective incineration system for the disposal of solid/liquid human waste. Coupled with the overall design parameters is an investigation of the chemical decomposition of the waste during the incineration process, odor treatment and control, and the physiological effects on the human body due to the inhalation of the toxic gases given off during the combustion of human waste.

The variables involved in the combustion process are studied and equations presented that relate the combustion variables of flame temperature, residence time and air requirements. These equations are tested based upon published …

Phosphate Removal From Sewage Using A Combination Of Ferric Chloride And A Polymeric Flocculant, Ravindra C. Patel Jun 1970

Phosphate Removal From Sewage Using A Combination Of Ferric Chloride And A Polymeric Flocculant, Ravindra C. Patel

Theses

The present work is concerned with a newer technique and approach to the problem of phosphate removal from waste water. This includes the removal of phosphate from the sample of activated sludge, i.e., a sample from the aeration tank of the secondary sewage treatment. The phosphate is removed by using ferric chloride as a precipitating agent and a cationic polyelectrolyte (P.E.) as a flocculating agent. Results of this study showed that: (a) P.E. addition gives a significant improvement in phosphate removal over that obtained by ferric chloride alone. In some cases the phosphate removal increased from 92 to 96.5 per …

A Study Of Consumer Acceptance Of A No-Loss Credit Card Verification System, Dean Arlidge

Theses

This research study focuses upon Credit Cards and a proposed verification method to reduce the risk of fraudulent use. It is anticipated that the proliferation and growing use of credit cards will require the use of security concepts offering built-in point of use protection that is automatic and reliable. A suggested concept is the use of a combined electronic credit card and a memory device. The proposed verification technique combines a user electronic credit card and memory number along with a simple imprinter which would be operated by the person accepting the credit card. Credit cards have become a widely …

A Rheological Equation Of State For Blood At Low Shear Rates, Anatoly Dritschilo May 1969

A Rheological Equation Of State For Blood At Low Shear Rates, Anatoly Dritschilo

Theses

In this work a new rheological equation of state is presented and its application to blood is studied. The equation considered is a linear combination of Newtonian and non-Newtonian contributions to the apparent viscosity. The general form of the equation is

 Tij =-(A + Be-1/C|(.5)Δi/j:Δj/i|1/2)Δij

Data from the literature were used to test the equation by generating curves of measured torque (T/L) versus applied shear rate (Ω) that would characterize the behavior of blood at all red cell concentrations and all shear rates in the Gilinson, Dauwalter and Merrill viscometer. The constants for the equation were …

The Effect Of Nitrilotriacetic Acid Upon The Biodegradability Of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate, John D. Mckenna Jun 1968

The Effect Of Nitrilotriacetic Acid Upon The Biodegradability Of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate, John D. Mckenna

Theses

The effects of trisodium nitrilotriacetate (SKTA) and sodium tipolyphosphate (STPP) upon the biological degradation of linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) ware experimentally investigated by the chemical oxygen demand and methylene blue methods. It was found that when STPP was present with LAS, the degradation of the LAS was better than when alone in solution. It was also found that LAS in solution with SN TA was less degradable than LAS alone. The benzene ring of the MS appeared to degrade after most of the linear portion of the chain had already been degraded.

Coagulation In Waste Water Treatment, Garret P. Westerhoff

Theses

This paper emphasizes a practical approach to the coagulation of domestic waste water. A portion of the paper is a synopsis of current published literature on the subject. Laboratory studies on the coagulation of raw domestic waste waters were conducted to provide the basis of a practical procedure for the evaluation and design of a coagulation process. Studies included the development of a relationship between the B.O.D. and the soluble and solids portion of two waste tests. The jar test was used for the studies on the coagulation process. The final section of the paper outlines the chemical cost factors …

A Study Of Hydrogen Bonding, Mary Ann Conklin Mar 1968

A Study Of Hydrogen Bonding, Mary Ann Conklin

Theses

The proton magnetic resonance technique lends itself to the study of hydrogen bond equilibria. Through PMR spectra, hydrogen bonding can be detected. The specific proton which participates intimately in the hydrogen bond may be identified. The following work has investigated hydrogen bonding systems in which the proton donor is trifluoroacetic acid and the proton acceptor is an N-heterocyclic base, such as quinazoline, quinoline, and isoquinol ine. From measurements of the chemical shift versus concentration, and from measurements of the line width at half peak amplitude versus concentration for the time average exchange signal, the extent of hydrogen bonding may be …

Ph Effects On Fluorescent Fatigue, Donald Miraco, John Pierce Jan 1967

Ph Effects On Fluorescent Fatigue, Donald Miraco, John Pierce

Theses

Fluorescent dyes tend to fatigue when exposed to short wavelength radiation. Since all work is not done at one pH level, it is necessary to know how a change in pH will effect the fluorescing characteristics of a dye. Of particular interest is the effect on fatigue as a function of time. The shift in spectral absorption with varying pH was established for fluorescein dye. Its increase in fluorescing intensity with increasing negative ion concentration was then measured. With increasing exposure time the pH's of 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 gave indications of fatiguing while the pH's of 2.0 and 4.0 …

A Study Of The Effects Of The Concentration Of 2-Mercapto-4-Phenylthiazole On The Clearing Rate Of A Chlorobromide Emulsion And Evidence Of The Presence Of Activity Sites, Peter Lloyd Jan 1966

A Study Of The Effects Of The Concentration Of 2-Mercapto-4-Phenylthiazole On The Clearing Rate Of A Chlorobromide Emulsion And Evidence Of The Presence Of Activity Sites, Peter Lloyd

Theses

It has been hypothesized than materials which tightly adsorb on sliver halide lattices will attach themselves preferentially at certain points, usually referred to as activity sites, which have areas of only a few percent of I the total crystal surface. An experiment using the mechanism of Photosolubilization as revealed by R. K. Blake and others of the E. I. DuPont de nemours Research Laboratories measureing the clearing rate of a chlorobromide emulsion doped with 2-mercapto-4-phenylthiazole indicates that the fixing rate is substantially modified by very small concentrations of this compound, and that the rate remains essentially constant over quite a …

Factors Affecting The Biodegradation Of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates In River Die-Away Studies, Neil M. Mchugh Jun 1965

Factors Affecting The Biodegradation Of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates In River Die-Away Studies, Neil M. Mchugh

Theses

The determining factors in the biodegradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates have been investigated using the river die-away technique. Emphasis was placed on finding the correlation between biodegradability and each of the following: surfactant structure, inoculation of basic water medium with activated sludge, and acclimation of bacteria to a given surfactant. It has been shown that the lower the molecular weight of linear alkylate, down to C8, the faster the rate of biodegradation. It was further shown that there is no direct relationship between phenyl position distribution and biodegradability, nor is there any direct correlation between the amount of surfactant remaining …

Use Of Borohydride To Determine The Difference In The Developable Density For A Chemically Sensitized And Non-Sensitized Emulsion., S. Laufer, R. Golembe May 1965

Use Of Borohydride To Determine The Difference In The Developable Density For A Chemically Sensitized And Non-Sensitized Emulsion., S. Laufer, R. Golembe

Theses

An emulsion prepared so as to minimize the effect of any chemical action on the grains was in its "primitive" state, i.e., that no chemical sensitizing had occurred during the formation of the emulsion grains in "inert" gelatin. Another emulsion was made so as to maximize the effect of any chemical action on the grains by chemical sensitizing methods. This emulsion was also prepared in "inert" gelatin. Sodium Borohydride was added at various levels of concentration to chemically fog both emulsions. The developable density was measured. Also, an attempt was made to measure the amount of reduction sensitization occurring if …

The In Vivo Effects Of Hydrazines And Vitamin B6 On The Metabolism Of Gamma_Aminobutyric Acid, Miguel Angel Median May 1963

The In Vivo Effects Of Hydrazines And Vitamin B6 On The Metabolism Of Gamma_Aminobutyric Acid, Miguel Angel Median

Theses

The discovery of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in mammalian brain and its rigorous identification was reported in 1950 (1,2,3). Enzymatic experiments with brain acetone powder revealed that GABA was formed by the decarboxylation of glutamic acid and that the enzyme, glutamic acid decarboxylase, required pyridoxal phosphate as the co-factor (4,5). Radioactive tracer studies in vivo and in vitro with glutamic acid and glucose verfied the fact that the former was the precursor of GABA (6,7).

Synthetic Investigations In Steroids, Harold R. Gollberg May 1962

Synthetic Investigations In Steroids, Harold R. Gollberg

Theses

The term hormone may be define as any substance normally produced and secreted by cells in one part of the body and carried by the blood stream to some other part where it is effective in low concentrations in regulating and co-ordinating the activities of the cells. However, hormones cannot be defined as belonging to any particular class of chemicals. All hormones are organic substances, but some are proteins while others are relatively simpler chemical compounds, such as amino acids and steroids. The hormones secreted by the pituitary gland are proteins, while those of the thyroid are amino acids. Others, …

Theses

A time-study of the twenty-four hour day of pupils in a senior high school in a rural area (Cherokee County) of Alabama has been made in order to discover the amount of time being devoted by these pupils to various activities, and to compare these findings to a similar study made in 1942. Time spent for sleep, classes, chores, productive work, study, transportation, leisure, eating, listening to radio and television, other recreation, reading, dressing, and miscellaneous activity will be charted and comparisons will be made.

Ferro And Ferricyanides In Industrial Waste Water, Frederick Joseph Neff May 1958

Ferro And Ferricyanides In Industrial Waste Water, Frederick Joseph Neff

Theses

The role of the Ferro and ferricyanides in present day waste treatment practice is reviewed. Possible conventional methods for the disposal of the compounds appear inadequate. It is shown experimentally that the cyanide content of Ferrocyanide may be oxidized by hypochlorite in alkaline solution when exposed to ultra-violet light and that no oxidation of the cyanide occurs when reacted with hypochlorite in diffuse laboratory light.
