The addition of the paramagnetic reagents gadolinium(18- crown-6) nitrate, gadolinium(dicyclohexano-18-crown-6) nitrate, and gadolinium nitrate pentahydrate to each of the substrates ethylbenzene, and thymidine has been studied in an attempt to obtain quantitative 13C spectra. These reagents reduce the nuclear Overhauser effect and shorten the spin-lattice relaxation times of the carbons of these substrates.

The Characterization Of The Oxygen Transfer Capabilities Of Fermentors, Joseph Stephen Adamca

A method of characterizing the oxygen mass transfer capabilities of fermentors was developed where volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficients are obtained using a modified sulfite oxidation method in conjunction with on line digital data processing. Carboxymethylcellulose is used in the reaction media to simulate the viscosity of typical non-Newtonian fermentation broths. Using this method, instantaneous values of volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficients can be obtained for various combinations of agitation and airflow rates in different fermentor configurations. This data is useful in the scale up or scale down of fermentors.

The relative adsorption capacities of seven toxic, volatile organic air pollutants of either proven or suspected carcinogenic potential were tested on various adsorbents. Tests were run at flow velocities similar to those set in field sampling. This allows for extrapolation of test results to actual ambient air sampling systems. Experimentation was performed using a gas chromatograph (G.C.) equipped with a flame ionization detector. Sample introduction was carried out using the "displacement method" where the sample is introduced to the adsorbent cartridge as a plug.

An external electric field was applied during autoradiographic exposures in an attempt to influence the path length and trajectory of image forming beta particles. Various techniques were employed to maximize the electric field applied. A continuous fermentation assembly was constructed and studies on the growth of the organism, Vibrio succinogenes, and its production of asparaginase was conducted. Results were compared with that already performed on a batch system and showed that a continuous fermentation produced 31.83 I.U. enzymes/mM ammonium formate compared to 17.4 I.U. enzyme/mM formate for batch.

Some of the runs performed indicated that the organism was washing out or giving very low specific growth rates. It was decided that this was not due to operational parameters of the chemostat, but possible chemical contamination in the medium. With all things considered, a continuous …

This research examines the psychological and sociological variables that predict whether an abused wife will leave or remain with an abusive partner. The author evaluates four primary theoretical frameworks: masochism theory, learned helplessness theory, modeling theory, and intrafamily victimization theory. To test hypotheses generated by these theories, in-depth interviews were conducted with fifty randomly selected clients from a center for abused women in St. Louis.

Four hundred twenty-five women religious from one order, residing in the midwestern states of Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, Texas and Louisiana, were mailed a questionnaire designed to determine the amount of stress experienced in one year, and the amount of illness suffered by those same persona during the same time period. Two hundred fourteen sisters responded to the questionnaire. Analysis of data by age groups revealed positive correlations between life stress and illness. Comparison of illness score between older and younger sisters showed no significant differences. Young sister tended to have high stress and illness scores, whereas older sisters had lower …

This research deals with a study of speed and contrast of daguerreotype plates that receive varying levels of sensitizing to the fumes of iodine, then bromine, and finally, a second iodizing. This sensitizing operation along with mercury development and gold gilding are characteristic of the process in its most improved state. Statistical analysis reveals how iodizing and bromizing affect speed and contrast. A field study was conducted to relate the sensitometric data to images produced in the camera.
