Theses

In this study Ozone/Hydrogen Peroxide/UV radiation is used to destroy refractory organic chemicals in aqueous solutions. 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4-D and Pyridine are the three chemicals used. Hydrogen Peroxide in combination with UV light proved to be most effective in destroying the parent chemical completely. Ozone and UV system was the next most effective system. UV alone was the least effective.

Kinetic study of the Hydrogen Peroxide and UV system was done using a Chemkin program. The results predicted by the Chemkin program matched closely with the experimental results. More work is currently being done using the Chemkin program to study other …

Sorption Characteristics And Their Effects On Geotechnical Properties Of Illite, Gnanmoorthy Selvakumar May 1987

Sorption Characteristics And Their Effects On Geotechnical Properties Of Illite, Gnanmoorthy Selvakumar

Theses

An experimental investigation of the sorption characteristics of phenol, chlorophenol and chlorobenzene on to illite and of the effect of sorption on the geotechnical properties of illite was performed. Various adsorption isotherms have been considered for the equilibrium adsorption study data. It was found that the Freundlich adsorption isotherm closely fits the experimental results. In addition, the results of desorption study indicated that the sorption process for these systems is not completely reversible.

The index properties of illite were found to be influenced by the sorption of contaminants, i.e., the Atterberg limits of illite increased in accordance with increases in …

Theoretical Studies Of A Norbornane Mimic Of Acyl-Alpha-Chymotrypsin, Pin-Nan Chen May 1987

Theoretical Studies Of A Norbornane Mimic Of Acyl-Alpha-Chymotrypsin, Pin-Nan Chen

Theses

Molecular mechanics calculations were used to investigate the structural flexibility of the norbornane mimic which is a model of an acyl-alpha-chymotrypsin intermediate. The Amber molecular mechanics force field was used to perform the conformational analysis.

Comparison of the optimized conformations of different energy has shown the relative structural rigidity of this molecule. Structural superposition of the minimized mimic to the native conformation of chymotrypsin shows that the mimic has a very similar spatial arrangement of its functional groups compared to the catalytic triad of the real enzyme.

Molecular electrostatic potential maps calculated in planes parallel to the average plane containing …

The Degradation Of Trace Pollutants In Wastewater, Christine M. Cheng May 1987

The Degradation Of Trace Pollutants In Wastewater, Christine M. Cheng

Theses

The effect of different treatments on the degradation of chlorinated organic pollutants in wastewater has been studied. The model compound investigated was para-chlorophenol. The different treatments used were ozone, UV irradiation, ultrasound, air flow and pure oxygen.

It is concluded that ozone has the greatest effect, ozone-UV irradiation follows closely behind, and UV irradiation has much less of an effect in degrading the p-chlorophenol.

P-chlorophenol was found to have an immeasureably slow degradation rate when treated with air even at an elevated temperature of 55°C.

The oxygen, at room temperature, showed a degradation of p-chlorophenol which, although small, was much …

Indicators Of Microbial Activity In Biological Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes, Alexander Mclean Sherrin May 1987

Indicators Of Microbial Activity In Biological Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes, Alexander Mclean Sherrin

Theses

Three methods were used to measure the activity of mixed liquor from the Livingston, N.J. municipal wastewater treatment plant on exposure to phenol. The three methods were, substrate removal rate (SRR), dissolved oxygen uptake rate (DOUR), and the dye reduction rate (DRR). Parameters from each test were compared for reproducibility and ease of determination. The SRR test gave the most reproducible results, while the DOUR test was the least reproducible. Although the reproducibility of the DRR test was close to that of the SRR test, the DRR was more time consuming and required a greater degree of expertise and training. …

A Study Of The Dynamics Of Microbial Competition For A Single Resource In A Chemostat Between Reversible Attachment To Solid Surfaces, Pericles Theofilos Lagonikos May 1987

A Study Of The Dynamics Of Microbial Competition For A Single Resource In A Chemostat Between Reversible Attachment To Solid Surfaces, Pericles Theofilos Lagonikos

Theses

It is known that two microbial populations competing for a single non-renewable resource in a homogeneous environment with time-invariant inputs cannot coexist in a steady state. The case where two microbial populations exhibiting reversible attachment to the walls of a chemostat compete for a single resource is studied theoretically. Because of the cell's attachment to the walls, the environment is no longer homogeneous. The present study considers the case where the attached cells form no more than a monolayer. The Baltzis-Fredrickson model is used to represent the attachment to the walls. In one system the attachment of cells of the …

The Study Of The Response Of Nucleus Ambiguus Neurons To Blood Pressure Changes, Adrienne Zoe May 1987

The Study Of The Response Of Nucleus Ambiguus Neurons To Blood Pressure Changes, Adrienne Zoe

Theses

The purpose of the project is to aid the study of the response of nucleus ambiguus neurons to changes in blood pressure. The sampling runs indicate that there is a correlation between blood pressure and neuron activity for some of the neurons monitored. Some neurons react to blood pressure increases by Increased neural firing rate while others react by decreased neural firing rate. Some neurons do not respond to blood pressure manipulation comprising the non-vagal neurons. A system was developed for the DIN PC to collect electrocardiogram, blood pressure, and neuron activity from a dog, and to perform non-real time …

Microvascular flow velocities and transport of macromolecules were studied in the hamster cheek pouch under control and acute high arterial pressure conditions, with or without topical (local) application of the vasodilating agent, bradykinin. Mean arterial pressures of 130-160% control were attained by intravenous renin infusion. The microcirculation of the cheek pouch was studied using intravital microscopy. Areas with arterioles and venules were recorded on a videotape for later analysis of red cell velocity, using an RBC tracking correlator, and vessel diameter using a video shearing monitor.

In addition, vascular permeability to macromolecules was studied in the hamster cheek pouch vascular …

Zeta Potential Measurements Of Biological Flocs Using A Streaming Potential Cell, Wayne James Gallagher Aug 1986

Zeta Potential Measurements Of Biological Flocs Using A Streaming Potential Cell, Wayne James Gallagher

Theses

A streaming potential apparatus was assembled and tested. Its purpose was to characterize the surface of biological flocs in a wastewater environment. Samples of mixed liquor were obtained from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners wastewater treatment plant in Newark, New Jersey. Filtered mixed liquor was passed through a bed of the floc particles in the streaming potential cell, and the electric potential across the cell was measured as a function of the differential pressure drop. From these data, the zeta potential was calculated using the Helmholtz equation. Values of -0.88 and -0.44 millivolts were obtained for two mixed liquor samples.

Investigation Of Water-Binding Properties Of Industrial Sludges Using Thermal Analysis As A Monitoring Tool, Ron Josephson Aug 1986

Investigation Of Water-Binding Properties Of Industrial Sludges Using Thermal Analysis As A Monitoring Tool, Ron Josephson

Theses

As part of a program to develop new and more cost-effective dewatering approaches for industrial hazardous wastes, sludges and synthetic "model" materials were analyzed by thermal methods in an attempt to comprehend their water-binding qualities and differentiate free and bound water. These thermal methods included Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Industrial sludges and laboratory models were compared using both standard heating techniques and subambient cooling (to -60°C). This latter technique provides direct indication of the amount of free water. This information can be very useful in evaluating and improving dewatering techniques for industrial …
