Planning A Seminar On Aging To Disseminate Information To Personnel Working With The Aged, Oscar Raymond Gain Jr.

Theses

The project consisted of planning and organizing a seminar for dissemination of information to persons working with the aged. From my ten years of experience in the health care profession, six of them were working with the aged population . I was surprised at my lack of knowledge about the older person. After attending the course as Lindenwood College my knowledge expanded from the biological to the social and psychological aspect of aging.

I decided to organize a seminar for local health personnel working with the aged in a thirty-mile radius of my residence. There were a total of six …

A Descriptive Study Of Participation In A Parent-Child Contracted Reading Program, Jeanie Mccutchan

Theses

An investigation was conducted to determine if scholastic achievement and grade level would affect participation in a parent-child reading contract program. Subjects were 108 students in grades 1-6 who were systematically sampled from 1,095 students who signed contracts to participate in the Wentzville Spring Into Reading Program.

A chi square was used to determine if there was a significant difference between high reading achievers and low reading achievers both for primary and intermediate grade levels and at all grade levels. This was done to evaluate whether reading achievement would affect participation in the reading program. Nominal data was tabulated showing …

In-Store Marketing Will Sell More Brewers Beer Than Relying On Media Pull Strategy Alone, Ron Muchnick Jan 1982

In-Store Marketing Will Sell More Brewers Beer Than Relying On Media Pull Strategy Alone, Ron Muchnick

Theses

The subject discussed in this paper is the value of using in-store marketing techniques to sell more Brewers beer than would be sold by relying solely on additional advertising. This additional advertising would in effect create what is termed media pull in motivating the consumer to buy more Brewers beer. The effectiveness of additional media support was compared to a sales promotion with reseller merchandising and display effort. This comparison was made by conducting two field experiments.

The methodology used was conducting two price promotions on Brewers twelve-packs. Both sample display stores as well as non-displaying control stores were selected …

Theories Of Management: A Manual For Managers, Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger Jan 1982

Theories Of Management: A Manual For Managers, Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger

Theses

Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger’s thesis, Theories of Management: A Manual for Managers, serves as a practical guide aimed primarily at preparing individuals for roles in middle management, especially within healthcare institutions. The manual is structured around three central areas: managing oneself, managing subordinates, and managing the organization. Schwerdtfeger argues that successful management depends on mastering all three, as they are interrelated and in constant flux due to evolving business and societal demands. Drawing from both classical and contemporary theories, including those of Taylor, Herzberg, Vroom, and Maslow, the work addresses core concepts such as motivation, job enrichment, decision-making, organizational communication, …

Government Contracting And Technological Change, Isaac Sims Jr. Jan 1982

Government Contracting And Technological Change, Isaac Sims Jr.

Theses

This culminating project by Captain Isaac Sims Jr., titled "Government Contracting and Technological Change," examines the evolution of U.S. government policies and practices concerning research and development (R&D) from the pre-World War II era through the immediate postwar years. The study highlights the significant transformation in the federal approach to technological innovation, particularly in defense and medical research, driven by the exigencies of wartime and the Cold War. Central to this transformation was the emergence of a robust contractual relationship between government agencies and private institutions, including universities and industrial firms.

The document outlines how World War II catalyzed the …

A Value Concept And Methodology, Patricia C. Soucy Jan 1982

A Value Concept And Methodology, Patricia C. Soucy

Theses

This study explores the complexities and methodologies of personal property appraisal, with a focus on how “value” is defined, measured, and applied in practice. Using the example of Tea Leaf ironstone china, the paper illustrates the ways in which appraisers must differentiate between various value concepts—such as true value, market value, and replacement value—depending on the intended purpose of the appraisal. Central to this discussion is the recognition that value is not a fixed quality inherent to an object but rather a function of context, grading, and classification systems employed by appraisers.

The work emphasizes the scientific parallels in valuation, …

The Development Of A Home Health Agency, Sandra K. Gain Jan 1982

The Development Of A Home Health Agency, Sandra K. Gain

Theses

Three objectives were focused upon regarding the development of a home health agency. The first objective involved was to define what a home health agency is. Several definitions exist, however, for practical purposes, the definitions set forth in the state and federal regulations of home health agencies have been used. Many people are not aware of the fact that health care in the home is an integrated program of health and social services . Following a review of pertinent literature, these health and social services have been explained in more detail.

The second objective concerns itself with the relevance of …

Evaluation Of A Pediatric Clinic Program, Fern Brody Hogan Jan 1982

Evaluation Of A Pediatric Clinic Program, Fern Brody Hogan

Theses

A community health center opened a well baby clinic in January 1981. The pediatric clinic service was offered to mothers who had delivered a baby through the health center's obstetric clinic. The basic goal of this study is to identify barriers to pediatric clinic attendance. The researcher has attempted to provide a profile of the users of the pediatric clinic. Following this, an evaluation of the pediatric clinic's geographic and financial accessibility, as perceived by the users, was done one year after starting the pediatric service. Analysis of demographic data obtained for the profile showed no significant differences between mothers …

Obstetrical Anesthesia Curriculum Project, Margaret A. Wittman Jan 1982

Obstetrical Anesthesia Curriculum Project, Margaret A. Wittman

Theses

The project idea stems from my work as a clinical instructor in nurse anesthesia. I have noticed that there is a great disparity between the didactic work done in the classroom and the clinical work done in the operating rooms. Instead of applying the classroom material to the actual case work, thereby making it important and meaningful to the student, the link between the two areas is virtually ignored. The aim in developing my project is to remedy this situation. In designing a curriculum for obstetrical anesthesia, I will attempt to utilize teaching methodologies which will not encourage rote memorization …

The Law And The Nurse Anesthetist, Beverly Ann Krause Jan 1982

The Law And The Nurse Anesthetist, Beverly Ann Krause

Theses

Should the surgeon, as "captain of the ship", be liable for the negligent acts of the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist? The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist is a highly skilled and educated nurse and is far more informed about anesthesia than the surgeon . The surgeons resent this needless liability , and because of this, the use of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to administer anesthetics might decrease.

To prove that the hypothesis was correct, several methods of research were done . A content analysis showed that the courts are divided on their decisions. There have been many decisions absolving the surgeon …

Image Quality As A Function Of Unsharp Masking Band Center, Chia-Chin Liu Jan 1982

Image Quality As A Function Of Unsharp Masking Band Center, Chia-Chin Liu

Theses

Unsharp masking is an image enhancement technique used to obtain a Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) greater than unity within a given spatial frequency band. In unsharp masking, the mask forms a slightly blurred version of the original image. The result is more severe in the high frequency region than at low frequencies. The final image is made by combining the original positive and the blurred negative images. The subjective quality of images resulting from unsharp masking is a function of the frequency response of the human eye. This study evaluates the unsharp masking technique by implementing the Subjective Quality Factor …

The Removal Of Low Concentrations Of Heavy Metals From Photographic Processing Effluents Using A Modified Crovex Silver Recovery Metallic Replacement System, John W. Miller Jr

Theses

Parameters have been established for effective removal of low concentrations of silver and cadmium from photographic processing effluents using a CROVEX silver recovery metallic replacement system. Parameters include: total photographic processing effluents (composed primarily of wash effluent, fixer, and developer), residence time, pumping pressures, and maximum heavy metal input. Techniques using these parameters yield silver and cadmium removal approaching 98%.

The Hypoxia Screen As An Indicator Of Alterations In The Number Of Centeral Cholinergic Recpetors Inuduced By Chronic Acetylcholinestrerase Inhibition, Kathleen B. Wallace Jan 1982

The Hypoxia Screen As An Indicator Of Alterations In The Number Of Centeral Cholinergic Recpetors Inuduced By Chronic Acetylcholinestrerase Inhibition, Kathleen B. Wallace

Theses

Chronic administration of diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP) at 72 hour intervals for a total of 14 doses resulted in a reduction in the number of central muscarinic receptors in mice as measured by the specific binding of [3H]Quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB) to cortical tis sue homogenates (pmole/mg protein). The number of cholinergic receptors were reduced significantly by 12% in DFP treated animals (0.687 + 0.018 pmoles/mg) as compared to vehicle treated controls (0.781 +0.016 pmoles/ mg) after the sixth dose of DFP (Day 17). The decrease in the number of central cholinergic receptors was maximal after the 8th dose of DFP (Day …

Investigation Of A Method To Increase The Sensitivity Of Counter-Current Immunoelectrophoresis Using Direct-Contact Photography, James E. Hohenberger Jan 1982

Investigation Of A Method To Increase The Sensitivity Of Counter-Current Immunoelectrophoresis Using Direct-Contact Photography, James E. Hohenberger

Theses

Counter-current Immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) has been used to detect bacterial capsular polysaccharides in both cerebrospinal fluids and blood serum of children with systemic meningococcal diseases. The sensitivity of the method depends upon the titre of the antisera. It was found that the sensitivity of CIE could not be increased by the method of direct-contact ultraviolet photography. The sensitivity could be increased by one serial dilution, on the average, by the treatment of a 0.25% tannic acid wash for 15 minutes.

A Classroom Management Model And Activities For Developing Self-Responsibility In The Elementary School, Sharon Montalbano Tebbe

Theses

One major goal of education is to nurture students who can take responsibility for their continued growth. In meeting this goal, educators must develop responsible problem solvers for society. This project establishes a classroom management model and activities for elementary teachers to use in setting up programs in their classrooms for developing self-responsibility in their students.

Classroom management models, teacher effectiveness, and student characteristics were researched in developing the model and activities presented in Chapter III and IV. In order for teachers to develop responsible problem solvers, the research indicated certain teacher behaviors were needed. Also, the research demonstrated that …
