The Printing Industry In Sub-Sahara Africa: An Exploratory Study, H. Richard Harmsen May 1982

The Printing Industry In Sub-Sahara Africa: An Exploratory Study, H. Richard Harmsen

Theses

The printing industry in Sub-Sahara Africa faces numerous problems inhibiting further growth and development. Because of a scarcity of published information regarding these problems, and regarding the nature of the industry in general, this study hoped to establish a beginning and baseline for researchers, printing managers, suppliers, development planners, and anyone else interested in the development of the African printing industry. Specifically, the objectives of this study were to identify: 1) the general characteristics of the printing industry in Sub-Sahara Africa; and 2) the primary constraints inhibiting its further growth and development. Information was gathered by several means, including a …

The Effect Of Ink/Fountain Solution Emulsion Of Paper Permanence, Thomas H. Spotts May 1982

The Effect Of Ink/Fountain Solution Emulsion Of Paper Permanence, Thomas H. Spotts

Theses

The permanence of printed documents and books appears to be primarily dependent on paper stability. Other researchers implicate pH as a major factor in the deterioration rate of paper and acidity as major the cause of this deterioration. During the lithographic printing process, ink is in direct contact with fountain solution, which can be acidic or alkaline. Fountain solution is a mixture of water and chemicals used to keep the non-image areas of a lithographic plate moist. On press the intimate contact of ink with fountain solution creates a fountain solution-in-ink emulsion. The emulsion used here is a stable suspension …

Opinions Of Hollenbeck Junior High Students Regarding The Year-Round Schedule, Teri Timmons May 1982

Opinions Of Hollenbeck Junior High Students Regarding The Year-Round Schedule, Teri Timmons

Theses

This study, conducted by Teri Timmons in partial fulfillment of a Master of Arts in Education degree at The Lindenwood Colleges (1982), explores the opinions of junior high students at Hollenbeck Junior High School in the Francis Howell School District regarding Year-Round Schooling (YRS) versus the Traditional School Schedule (TSS). Amid growing interest in alternative academic calendars due to rising student populations and limited funding for new educational facilities, this research sought to evaluate student attitudes toward these two scheduling models.

A random sample of 35 students who had experienced both YRS and TSS during their elementary years was surveyed …

Teacher Judgment, Teacher Rating And Reading Readiness As Predictors Of First Grade Reading Achievement, Linda White May 1982

Teacher Judgment, Teacher Rating And Reading Readiness As Predictors Of First Grade Reading Achievement, Linda White

Theses

This study concentrates on the efficiency of three predictive measures used at the end of kindergarten to predict how kindergarten students will perform in reading in relation to three ability groupings of high, average, or low for first grade. Through research this writer attempted to find out if a teacher's own prediction for future academic achievement in reading will be as efficient as a prediction of a rating scale or a reading readiness test.

Included in this paper the researcher has a review of the problem of prediction in education and a review of the factors that researchers have considered …

The Ability Of Surfactants To Assist In The Removal Of Image Scum In Positive Resist Development, Michael P. Belden May 1982

The Ability Of Surfactants To Assist In The Removal Of Image Scum In Positive Resist Development, Michael P. Belden

Theses

An experiment was run to determine the ability of surfactants to reduce or remove scum produced during development of a positive resist. Anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants were added to a low metal ion developer at concentrations between 0.025% and 0.57o. The film thickness loss due to development was measured, and image profiles were observed with scanning electron micrographs . Of the surfactants tried, Aerasol OT-75 (dioctyl ester of sodium sulfosuccinic acid) produced the best results, 9.57o film thickness loss with little image profile change. However, the experiment was limited by processing condition variables.

Factors Influencing Flexographic Tone Reproduction Including Types Of Printing Plate Materials Used, Bruce Capriotti May 1982

Factors Influencing Flexographic Tone Reproduction Including Types Of Printing Plate Materials Used, Bruce Capriotti

Theses

During the past three years, a number of photopolymer plates for flexographic printing have appeared on the market. The use of such a plate greatly simplifies flexographic platemaking by reducing the process to a level similar to that of a presensitized plate for offset lithography. A series of experiments were conducted to determine whether or not there were significant differences in the areas of half tone dots in different areas of the tonal scale on different types of flexographic plate materials all made from a single negative with a specially designed test object on it. Assuming significant differences were found …

An Investigation And Implementation Of Recommendation X.25 On A Motorola M6800 Based Network, Louis Nyerges May 1982

An Investigation And Implementation Of Recommendation X.25 On A Motorola M6800 Based Network, Louis Nyerges

Theses

A subset of the Recommendation X.25 protocol is implemented on a two node network. Each node accepts and translates data from the user in a sequential fashion into the appropriate protocol structure for transmission to another node. Each node has the capability of full duplex operation. The hardware is built around a Motorola M6800 microprocessor employing a minimum of 4096 words of random access memory and two asynchronous ports: one for communication with the user and the other for communication with the network. The software on each node contains the protocol programs and a multitasking monitor which is used to …

Effect Of Stabilizers On Gold Sensitization, Douglas E. Corbin May 1982

Effect Of Stabilizers On Gold Sensitization, Douglas E. Corbin

Theses

Previous work has shown evidence that some emulsion stabilizers can prevent rearrangement of adsorbed silver sulfide to a photographically active form. Full gold plus sulfur sensitization may be achieved by simultaneous introduction of the sensitizers or by adding gold after sulfur sensitization. As gold sensitization of an already optimally sulfur-sensitized emulsion may instead involve a direct chemical reaction, the effect of stabilizers on gold sensitization may not parallel their effect on sulfur sensitization. The stabilizers 6-methyl-4-hydroxy-l , 3 , 3a , 7-tet razaindene and l-phenyl-5-mercaptotetrazole retard but do not prevent gold sensitization in a sulfur sensitized emulsion. This may suggest …

Correlation Of Silver Halide Emulsion Bar-Coater Vacuum Chamber Pressure Fluctuations With Flow Pattern Occurrence, Paul Fitzpatrick Apr 1982

Correlation Of Silver Halide Emulsion Bar-Coater Vacuum Chamber Pressure Fluctuations With Flow Pattern Occurrence, Paul Fitzpatrick

Theses

A study was conducted in which the cause of flow pattern, a repetitive mottle-like defect, was investigated. Results obtained indicate that vacuum pressure fluctuations occur at the start of coating by the vacuum flow port that are 367% greater than at the center of coating. These fluctuations decay in time during the period of flow pattern occurrence, and range in frequency from 0 to .10 mm-1. These pressure fluctuations correlate to flow pattern density fluctuation frequencies of the same range. Additionally, it was seen that the decay rate of the ME side of the vacuum chamber was three times the …

A Comparison Of The Perception Of Juxtaposed Tones In Newspaper Images When Screened With Conventional And Random Dot Screens, Sylvia Monteiro Apr 1982

A Comparison Of The Perception Of Juxtaposed Tones In Newspaper Images When Screened With Conventional And Random Dot Screens, Sylvia Monteiro

Theses

The halftone process has been the conventional means of reproducing photographic artwork on newsprint. The use of relatively coarse screen rulings, dictated by the paper characteristics, produces an image with a noticeable dot pattern. Furthermore, the printing process is susceptible to extreme dot gain variation, which affects tone reproduction and the pictorial communication of the image. There were good reasons to suspect that a random dot screen could give more consistent tone rendition than a conventional halftone screen. A comparative study of the consistency of perception of conventional and randomly screened images when printed on newsprint has not yet been …
