Digital Image Modeling Of Film Granularity And Effect On Subjective Pictorial Quality, Jerold B. Lisson
Digital Image Modeling Of Film Granularity And Effect On Subjective Pictorial Quality, Jerold B. Lisson
Theses
The basic question posed by this study is - WHAT IS THE SENSITIVITY OF PICTORIAL SUBJECTIVE QUALITY TO A GRANULARITY INCREASE? This question is decidedly different than the typically posed question of granularity studies, that is - WHAT IS THE SENSITIVITY OF PERCEIVED GRANULARITY (graininess) TO A GRANULARITY INCREASE? In the subjective evaluations herein, the former question was considered most pertinent to response from the general public, who in toto, do not interpret graininess as an attribute per se, but only that ubiquitous factor known as "quality" - poor, indifferent, or good. All references in this paper to granularity/quality thresholds …
The Use Of Contour Plots To Optimize Exposure And Development Time In The Preparation Of Color Correction Masks With A Three-Aim-Point Control System, Ronald Irwin
Theses
The calculation of optimum development and exposure for color separation mask has long been a problem for the color separator. Today this problem is somewhat minimized through the use of mini-computers which utilize mathemati cal models in their programming. This thesis examines an alternative method of solving for optimum development speed and exposure conditions. The alternative tested was the use of contour plotting to predict a development and exposure time which would yield a predetermined mask number and A-B range. The process which the tests were conducted against was silver masking using three-aim-point control in contact conditions. This thesis describes …

Reactions Of Atomic Hydrogen With Selected Halomethane, Sriram Chari
Reactions Of Atomic Hydrogen With Selected Halomethane, Sriram Chari
Theses
The kinetics of the reactions of atomic hydrogen with methylene chloride and carbon tetrachloride were studied spectroscopically and chromatographically using a 4 cm i.d. discharge flow reactor at pressures of 1 to 8 mm Hg absolute and room temperature. Hydrogen atom concentrations were measured by chemiluminescence titration with nitrogen dioxide. Evidence was found for the formation of atomic carbon intermediate in the reaction with carbon tetrachloride, but methane and HCl were the chief products in both reactions for reaction times of 150 ms and higher, showing that secondary reactions were so fast that almost all halomethane consumed went toward the …
An Experimental Study Of Comparison Between Ph-Parametric Pumping And Ph-Cycling Zone Adsorption Process On Protein Separation, Vincent P. Jajalla
An Experimental Study Of Comparison Between Ph-Parametric Pumping And Ph-Cycling Zone Adsorption Process On Protein Separation, Vincent P. Jajalla
Theses
In this thesis, an experimental investigation was conducted to compare the performance of the continuous pH-parametric pumping and the pH-cycling zone adsorption process on protein separation.
The model system studied was hemoglobin-water. on CM-Sepharose CL-6B (cation) exchanger in a single-column system. Various modes of operation were tried on both the pH-parametric pumping and the pH-cycling zone adsorption method. The separation factors for each mode of operation were computed and compared.
It is shown that the continuous pH-parametric pumping, with circulation to insure the pH uniformity inside the column, has the better separation factor than the pH-cycling zone adsorption method.
Optical Noise Reduction Using Partial Coherence In Spatial Filtering For Image Detail Enhancement, Steven Lynn Musser
Optical Noise Reduction Using Partial Coherence In Spatial Filtering For Image Detail Enhancement, Steven Lynn Musser
Theses
Coherent optical spatial filtering can be used to increase the contrast of fine detail in photographs. The images produced, however, contain optical noise blemishes that make the procedure seldom usable in practical photography. A promising method of reducing the optical noise by means of partial coherence in a projection printer has been investigated involving the use of a plurality of point sources. It has been demonstrated, using pictorial enlargements, that subjective sharpness levels may be obtained which are similar to those obtained by using specular illumination while greatly reducing the amount of coherent noise on the image. Enlargements of a …

Major Trends In Operating Systems Development, Margaret M. Reek
Theses
Operating systems have changed in nature in response to demands of users, and in response to advances in hardware and software technology. The purpose of this paper is to trace the development of major themes in operating system design from their beginnings through the present. This is not an exhaustive history of operating systems, but instead is intended to give the reader the flavor of the dif ferent periods in operating systems' development. To this end, the paper will be organized by topic in approximate order of development. Each chapter will start with an introduction to the factors behind the …
The Comparison Of The Bay Area Writing Project And Traditional Composition Methods, Nancy Black
The Comparison Of The Bay Area Writing Project And Traditional Composition Methods, Nancy Black
Theses
This paper is a study of a means of improving the instruction of composition. It is a comparison of the Bay Area Writing Project Method to the Traditional Writing Method. An experiment was conducted using a treatment group that was taught composition through the Bay Area Writing Project Method and a control group that was taught composition through the Traditional Writing Method. The results were two-fold. Statistically, there was not a significant difference in post-test scores on a holistically graded composition, but if one considered the number of students showing improvement and the increased mean score, the Bay Area Writing …
An Investigation Of The Library Education Of Teachers In The Lutheran Elementary Schools In The Saint Louis Area, Joanne Bader
An Investigation Of The Library Education Of Teachers In The Lutheran Elementary Schools In The Saint Louis Area, Joanne Bader
Theses
This study was designed to investigate the library education of teachers in the Lutheran elementary schools in the Saint Louis area. It vas hypothesized that teachers were not prepared to use the library as it should be used, partly because they had not been taught to do so, and that their feelings of how adequately trained they were would depend on when and where they had received their education. Elementary teachers, a total of 244 teachers, in twenty-nine schools were surveyed. Results indicated that generally the teachers are not well trained in formal courses in library education, but obtained most …
Control Of Construction Costs During Construction, David H. Foo
Control Of Construction Costs During Construction, David H. Foo
Theses
The construction of a major project requires a vast amount of time, money, material and human resources. Proper coordination of these elements into an array of activities is crutial to the success of the project if it is to be built on time and within budget. As technology advances, the complexity of the project increases the resources to build them remain finite, and therefore, the project manager must seek methods to improve control on the construction project.
This thesis provides an overall view of the relatively new and rapidly expanding field of cost engineering. Cost engineering may be defined as …
Direct Simple Shear Tests On Overconsolidated Anderten Clay, Maral Bedian
Direct Simple Shear Tests On Overconsolidated Anderten Clay, Maral Bedian
Theses
Determining the shear strength behaviour of a very stiff calcareous clay in the Direct-Simple Shear tests is the purpose of this thesis. The clay tested is the MLK Arderten Clay from West Germany.
For the Direct-Simple Shear tests, a trimming device was prepared to get the required size of the samples. Porous stones with nails were used to prevent the slippage of the samples.
The results of the Consolidated Ko Undrained Direct-Simple Shear tests showed that the shear strength of the clay depended largely on the condition of the samples tested. Relatively homogeneous and intact samples had shear strength …
United States V. Western Europe : A Comparative Study Of Safeguarding Practice Against Hazards At The Point Of Operation In Metal Forming Systems, Jeffrey Joseph Schwalje
United States V. Western Europe : A Comparative Study Of Safeguarding Practice Against Hazards At The Point Of Operation In Metal Forming Systems, Jeffrey Joseph Schwalje
Theses
The problem of assuring safety for the worker at the point of operation of a metal stamping system is complex by virtue of the multiplicity of combinations possible between all conceivable dies and a press of suitable capacity.
The means of providing safeguarding prescriptions is further compounded by maintaining a viable means to enforce the safety regulations as demanded by law.
A comparative study of the approach to this problem was made between the practices in the United States with that of Great Britain, France and West Germany.
This was accomplished through the study of the available standards, codes and …

The Microdensitometry Of Image Boundaries Fabricated By The Color-Difference Blue-Screen Traveling Matte Process, Michael F. Lehman
The Microdensitometry Of Image Boundaries Fabricated By The Color-Difference Blue-Screen Traveling Matte Process, Michael F. Lehman
Theses
The Color-Difference Blue-Screen Traveling Matte Process is a technique used in motion picture special effects production to composite two or more scenes into one. A complaint often made against the process is that boundaries between the composited images are often 'harder,’ i.e., there is a sharper transition between the image and their surround. Because this is visible, it is objectionable. An attempt at duplicating the process, so the boundaries could be analyzed using microdensitometry was made. Failure at key steps in the process rendered results inconclusive, but raised several interesting questions of the process. Also, a simple technique was fabricated …
Music Education Posters, Edith L. Freedman
Music Education Posters, Edith L. Freedman
Theses
In the fall of 1979, I began a design project that involved studying a viola from its various structural and functional aspects. During the course of the project, I came to realize how little I knew about the instrument historically, which meant in a sense that l was studying an object with little or no concern for its context, as the time for thesis proposals neared, I decided to confront this issue and expanded it to include all of the instru ments of the symphony orchestra. I spoke to several professionals in the music educa tion field. They indicated that …

The Effects Of Training Parents In Divergent Questioning On The Creativity Of The Pre-School Child, Judith E. Brown
The Effects Of Training Parents In Divergent Questioning On The Creativity Of The Pre-School Child, Judith E. Brown
Theses
This study was designed to investigate whether teaching mothers to ask divergent questions would have a direct effect on their four year old child 's creativity. It was hypothesized that children whose mothers received the training in divergent questioning techniques would do better on a test of creativity than children whose mothers, did not receive the training.
Twenty mother and child groups were included in the study. The twenty were divided randomly into two groups, ten groups to receive the treatment and ten to receive no treatment. Six treatment sheets were then administered in the homes to the experimental group …
The Theoretical Foundations Of Psycho-Diagnostics: A Comparison Of Dynamic Psychiatry And Ego Developmental Psychiatry, Marian Rice
Theses
Marian Rice's thesis compares two models of psychiatry: dynamic and ego developmental. The dynamic model, rooted in classical psychoanalytic theory, focuses on resolving the Oedipal conflict. The ego developmental model emphasizes object relations theory and resolving the rapprochement crisis. The thesis explores the history of psychoanalytic theory, highlighting the evolution of Freud's ideas and the contributions of other theorists like Reich, A. Freud, and Hartmann. Object relations theory, a key aspect of ego developmental psychology, is discussed in detail, examining the works of Klein, Fairbairn, Winnicott, Balint, and Mahler. The thesis concludes by summarizing both models and emphasizing the importance …
A Humanistic/Existential Approach To A Universal Symbol, Linda Sweeney
A Humanistic/Existential Approach To A Universal Symbol, Linda Sweeney
Theses
This paper explores the therapeutic potential of the universal heart symbol in the context of humanistic–existential art therapy. The author situates the work within a tradition that emphasizes creativity, spirituality, and the search for meaning, presenting the heart as a transcultural and archetypal image capable of guiding clients toward self-discovery. Unlike symptom-focused or diagnostic approaches, this perspective underscores the transformative role of symbols and imagery in facilitating psychological growth and healing.
The heart, as both biological organ and cultural metaphor, is shown to occupy a central place in human imagination and artistic expression. Across history and across cultures, it has …
