Body Analysis: A Self Case Study, Janet N. Riley Jun 1977

Body Analysis: A Self Case Study, Janet N. Riley

Theses

Janet N. Riley’s Body Analysis - A Self Case Study (1977) is an introspective examination of how personal experiences, emotions, and belief structures manifest physically. Drawing from bioenergetic analysis, humanistic therapy, and personal therapeutic experiences, Riley explores the connection between psychological development and bodily expression. She details her journey through psychoanalysis, Transactional Analysis, Gestalt therapy, and body-focused therapeutic approaches, emphasizing how character patterns are embedded in muscular tension and body posture.

Riley identifies two dominant bioenergetic body types in herself—the oral and rigid structures—each reflecting distinct psychological traits. Her oral structure reveals patterns of dependency, longing, and emotional deprivation, while …

A Consciousness Simulation Model, R. Edward Mitchell Jr. Jun 1977

A Consciousness Simulation Model, R. Edward Mitchell Jr.

Theses

The thesis titled "A Consciousness Simulation Model" by R. Edward Mitchell (1977) explores the theoretical design of a digital model aimed at simulating human consciousness. The model is structured around a collection of independent processing modules that mimic various human cognitive and emotional processes. These modules include components for thought selection, ego/achievement, memory, and emotion processing, which interact with one another in a fashion that simulates aspects of human thought and behavior.

Mitchell's primary goal is to develop a system that could behave more like a human, particularly in communication and decision-making processes, to improve human-machine interaction. The thesis highlights …

Thermal Decomposition Products Of Kynol And Nomex With Reference To Structure And Toxicity, Shaker H. El-Sherbini May 1977

Thermal Decomposition Products Of Kynol And Nomex With Reference To Structure And Toxicity, Shaker H. El-Sherbini

Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to study the combustion products of KYNOL and NOMEX as a fire retardant fibers. From the quantitative analysis data of the combustion products, the polymer structure is discussed and the property of thermal stability is explained.

From the analysis of the combustion products, the toxicity indices for the two fibers are determined. It is found to be 0.1 for KYNOL and 0.71 for NOMEX. This can be interpreted to mean that, if one gram of MIDI, is decomposed and the combustion products were diffused in one cubic meter of air, the probability of dying …

Bioenergy And Emotions, Vickie C. Walter May 1977

Bioenergy And Emotions, Vickie C. Walter

Theses

This thesis explores the concept of bioenergy as an integral force underlying both human physiology and emotional experience. Drawing on a wide range of historical, cultural, and scientific perspectives, the work examines how different traditions and researchers have conceptualized and attempted to measure or influence this subtle energy. The discussion begins with Wilhelm Reich’s notion of “orgone energy,” a vital force he linked to psychological health and emotional regulation. Reich’s controversial theories and experimental devices are considered in the broader context of psychoanalysis and somatic therapy.

The study then traces parallels between Reich’s work and ancient energy systems such as …

Self-Portrait As A Measure Of Self Perception, Susan Lamantia O'Connor

Theses

This thesis, "Self-Portrait as a Measure of Self-Perception" by Susan LaMantia O'Connor, explores how self-portraiture can serve as a therapeutic tool for understanding self-perception. Conducted with police officers as subjects, the study employs an art therapy exercise involving three self-portraits: one of the self, one with the primary family, and one with a significant individual. Each drawing provides insight into how participants perceive themselves, their relationships, and their emotions. The exercise allows for a departure from traditional verbal assessments, aiming to reveal deeper psychological insights through visual expression. Key elements analyzed include figure stance, line quality, motion, color, and detail, …

Can Utilization Of Non-Licensed Nursing Technicians Reduce Costs In Hospital Critical Care Units?, Shari Erikson Pollard Jan 1977

Can Utilization Of Non-Licensed Nursing Technicians Reduce Costs In Hospital Critical Care Units?, Shari Erikson Pollard

Theses

This thesis investigates whether utilizing non-licensed nursing technicians in hospital critical care units can reduce costs without compromising patient care quality. The study focuses on Prince George’s General Hospital and Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU), analyzing staffing patterns, personnel costs, and patient care demands.

The research includes a review of literature, interviews with healthcare professionals, and a survey of hospitals in the Baltimore-Washington region and other East Coast cities. The findings highlight the escalating costs of healthcare, with personnel expenses accounting for a significant portion. Survey results reveal that 43% of hospitals in the …

The Effect Of Emotions And Psychotherapeutic Relationships On Vision, Lawrence Uman Jan 1977

The Effect Of Emotions And Psychotherapeutic Relationships On Vision, Lawrence Uman

Theses

Large numbers of people in our society are affected by visual problems. Visual problems are generally held to be the result of heredity, disease, or the structural condition of the eye itself. This study explores a fourth factor, the effect of emotions in visual performance.

This study hypothesizes that the emotional state of the person affects vision. Secondly, changes in the emotional condition of the person will result in changes in vision. Thirdly, changes in vision will in turn affect the personality.

The data to explore this hypothesis was obtained through a review of the literature in the area of …

The Spiritual Dimensions Of Nursing Care, Shirley H. Wipfler Jan 1977

The Spiritual Dimensions Of Nursing Care, Shirley H. Wipfler

Theses

The Spiritual Dimensions of Nursing Care by Shirley H. Wipfler explores the often-overlooked role of spirituality in holistic patient care. Submitted as a Master’s thesis to Lindenwood Colleges in 1977, the work addresses a critical gap in conventional medical and nursing practices, emphasizing that true healing must consider not only the body and mind but also the spirit. Wipfler argues that the spiritual needs of patients are frequently neglected, typically relegated to clergy, and rarely integrated into treatment plans.

The thesis is structured into three main parts. The first explores the characteristics, functions, and laws of the human spirit, referencing …

A Survey Of Attitudes Of Nurse Anesthetists And Anesthesiologists, Leah E. Katz

Theses

Having been a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist for over 10 years, functioning both as a practitioner and as an educator, I have become very aware of many problems facing my profession. These problems are frequently discussed by physicians and nurses in the work situation as well as in the political arena. Until this time there has been no formal study of these problems.

In my study of interpersonal conflict related to the field of health care administration, I became aware that one method of solving conflict entailed utilization of opinions of the conflicting groups in order to reach a mutual …

Holistic Health: An Approach To Healing As It Relates To Cancer Counseling, Lorraine Miller

Theses

This thesis explores the holistic health approach as it relates to cancer counseling, emphasizing the integration of mind, body, and spirit in the healing process. Holistic health views illness, particularly cancer, as a psychosomatic condition where both physical and emotional factors play crucial roles. The paper investigates the relationship between psychological stress, emotional states, and cancer development, suggesting that healing requires addressing not just the physical symptoms but the underlying emotional and psychological causes.

The study delves into various therapeutic techniques, including biofeedback, meditation, family therapy, autogenic training, and acupuncture, all of which promote self-awareness and self-healing. It highlights how …
