Plate Stability In Screenless Printing, Stephen E. Martin May 1980

Plate Stability In Screenless Printing, Stephen E. Martin

Theses

Lithography in the minds of most people is a method of reproducing a photograph or artwork by means of a halftone screen. The screen, usually no finer than 400 lines per inch reproduces the image by varying degrees of density through control of the dot size. With screenless printing the image is reproduced without the screen, resulting in much better detail. The purpose of this thesis is to determine what type of plate material will work best with the "Association Product Coating", since the ST Sumner Williams plate that worked well with this coating is no longer produced. The criterion …

Life-Enhancement With Art Therapy For The Institutionalized Aged, Lorraine H. Briggs

Theses

The aging of the populace is causing Americans to consider the ways in which education, medicine, housing, and leisure will be affected by this rapid growth . In this paper I will review some of the literature on aging that delineates the individual differences in physical and mental characteristics of the old . Some of the more prominent theories of the aging process will be presented briefly, with an examination of physical and psychological changes that affect the older person's ability to cope with an environment characterized by multiple loss, both physical and emotional. Myths about how age influences the …

Spatial Filtering Of A Projection Printer, Using Partially Coherent Light, Leon Vlahakes May 1980

Spatial Filtering Of A Projection Printer, Using Partially Coherent Light, Leon Vlahakes

Theses

This investigation applied the technique of spatial filtering to a projection printer utilizing partially coherent illumination. The affect of filtering on image quality parameters such as resolution, edge gradient and MTF were determined for a black and white film. Edge gradient analysis was used to derive MTF data from sampled edges. A source diameter of 3 mm and spatial filter diameters of .6, 2.2, and 3.0 mm were used. Spatial filtering was seen to have a drastic affect on edge gradient and MTF. Increasing the filter diameter resulted in a decrease of cutoff frequency of the system. Spatial filtering had …

Modification Of An Automatic Photographic Exposure System, To Correct For Light Source Color-Temperature Variation, Jay Agular May 1980

Modification Of An Automatic Photographic Exposure System, To Correct For Light Source Color-Temperature Variation, Jay Agular

Theses

An attempt was made to correct the spectral sensitivity of a silicon photodiode, by using optical filters, to match the spectral sensitivity of Kodalith ortho film, type 3, 2556, and Kodalith pan film, 2568, respectively. The correction would allow the diode to be used with a light-integrator and light source of varying spectral power distribution, when these films are used. A Corning 978 2 blue/green filter was used for the ortho film and an O.C.L.I. detector trimmer, was used for the pan film. Through experimentation and statistical analysis, it was found that there was 100% correction of the photodiode spectral …

Agn03 And Kbr Reagent Concentrations' Effect On Double-Jet Emulsion Grain Size Dispersity, Daniel D. Siems May 1980

Agn03 And Kbr Reagent Concentrations' Effect On Double-Jet Emulsion Grain Size Dispersity, Daniel D. Siems

Theses

Four levels of AgN03 and KBr reagent concentrations between 0.1N and 1.0N were used to study the effect of changing reagent concentration on the grain size dispersity of a primitive AgBr double-jet emulsion. The emulsions were precipitated in a continuous flow crystalizer at a constant pAg of 8.5 within the crystalizer. Emulsion samples were collected at 5 minute intervals during the make from the crystalizer and used to obtain grain size frequency distribution data. Through the use of multivariate analysis of variance, it was concluded with 95% confidence that AgNOo and KBr reagent concentrations ranging from 0.1N to 1 .ON …

A Tone Reproduction Study Of A Digital Image Processing System, Gerald Kashtan May 1980

A Tone Reproduction Study Of A Digital Image Processing System, Gerald Kashtan

Theses

Photographic tone reproduction analysis was applied to a digital image processing system (DIPS) . The problem was to calculate computer mapping functions for the DIPS that would cause input scenes to be reproduced having Clark's tone reproduction characteristics. Using the graphical method of a Jones Diagram, unique computer mapping functions were constructed for four images processed by the DIPS. After processing the imagery in the computer, the pixels were reconstructed into photographic transparencies for projection in a specially designed projection area. The results of this work concluded that tone reproduction analysis is useful in studying the macro effect of luminance …

The Design And Construction Of An Exposure Meter For Use With Infrared Sensitized Film, James A. Fitz May 1980

The Design And Construction Of An Exposure Meter For Use With Infrared Sensitized Film, James A. Fitz

Theses

In this project, an exposure meter which is sensitive to, and calibrated for infrared radiation was designed and constructed. An EG&G SGD-100A silicon photodiode was chosen to use as the photodetector. This choice was based on cost, availability, ruggedness, stability, and sensitivity. A circuit using an operational amplifier to amplify the output of the photodetector was used. The circuit design allowed easy variation of the signal gain to give a detectable meter deflection under varying lighting conditions. Five different gains were used to allow use of the meter under conditions ranging from outside under direct sunlight, to inside with typical …

An Investigation On The Applicability Of Multi-Microprocessing In The Two Dimensional Digital Filtering Problem, Timothy J. Whitcher May 1980

An Investigation On The Applicability Of Multi-Microprocessing In The Two Dimensional Digital Filtering Problem, Timothy J. Whitcher

Theses

Digital image processing has been receiving an increasing amount of development in recent years, largely because high speed digital com puters are becoming readily available. In addition, the advent of the microprocessor has revolutionized the capabilities of compact electronic systems. This thesis examines the applicability of microprocessors to digital image processing. Using a Z8000 microprocessor as a baseline, the computation time for a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform is estimated for various microprocessor architectures. These results are later compared to the manufacturer's specified computation times on a Floating Point. Systems AP-120B Array Processor.

Structural Aesthetics In Furniture Design, James Clark May 1980

Structural Aesthetics In Furniture Design, James Clark

Theses

The purpose of my thesis will be to incorporate structural members as aesthetic elements in furniture design. In architecture, structure is a major design concern. As a result of the interrelationship between these disciplines, I will apply architectural principles to furniture design. In my thesis I propose to expose and use structure for defining form. More specifically I plan to utilize structure in ways that reveal its own beauty through its functional purpose. I plan to explore this idea by producing as many pieces as possible during the year of my thesis work. Each piece done will involve techniques and …

Modification Of The Kenworthy Snorkel Camera System, Lewis Brown Jr. May 1980

Modification Of The Kenworthy Snorkel Camera System, Lewis Brown Jr.

Theses

The Kenworthy Snorkel Camera System is a "periscope" type of lens system designed for use in cinematography. Its primary applications are in the photographing of small scale models and in close-up work. Since its introduction in 1967, the system has been used extensively for these purposes, and has been especially useful in advertising work. It was hypothesised that the system could be modified without any loss in image quality by changing the relay system from a single relay lens to a telecentric relay system composed of two equal focal length lenses. A diaphragm could also be added to the system …

Comparison Of The Derivative-Transform Edge Gradient Analysis Technique To Tatian's Method Of Edge Gradient Analysis, Varying Random Noise, Truncation Interval And Sampling Internal On Analytical Edges, Robert Laflesh May 1980

Comparison Of The Derivative-Transform Edge Gradient Analysis Technique To Tatian's Method Of Edge Gradient Analysis, Varying Random Noise, Truncation Interval And Sampling Internal On Analytical Edges, Robert Laflesh

Theses

The following work has been computer simulated. A cumulative gaussian step response and the step response of a photographic emulsion 1 were taken through the derivative-transform edge gradient analysis technique and Tatian's method of analysis. Random noise levels, truncation intervals and sampling intervals on the analytic edges were varied to determine their influence on each technique. The variance and means of the calculated m.T.F.s were then statistically tested for no difference of the two techniques. The exact noise free M.T.F. was also calculated and compared to the M.T.F.s calculated by the two techniques. The results show a statistical difference in …

The Verification Of An Optical System Design For A Low Frequency Mtf Camera, Edwin B. Hoel May 1980

The Verification Of An Optical System Design For A Low Frequency Mtf Camera, Edwin B. Hoel

Theses

A proposed low frequency MTF camera system uses a cylinder lens to smear an area-modulated sinusoidal target into an irradiance-modulated sinusoidal image for the evaluation of a film's modulation transfer characteristics. The proposed system was constructed and evaluated. Resolution limits, field flatness, field sharpness, repeatability, de focus effects and system MTF were determined. The camera was tested with film and found to have an MTF value close to 1.0 for frequencies up to 10 cycles/mm at which point the function dropped off to a value of 0.2 at 30 cycles/mm. Off-axis images showed rapid degredation as a maximum MTF value …

The Limiting Effect Of The Human Visual System On Image Processing, Timothy J. Wilson May 1980

The Limiting Effect Of The Human Visual System On Image Processing, Timothy J. Wilson

Theses

With the application of linear systems analysis, Fourier theory, and signal processing theory to vision science, the properties of the visual system are being defined in terms of such things as the modulation transfer function CMTF) . Earlier experimentation by other researchers has calculated the visual MTF using simple sine-wave targets. This experiment demonstrates the correlation between the visual MTF and the frequency content of simple images. The effect of image contrast is also shown to have an effect on the subjective evaluation of image sharpness. This experiment shows the need to consider the characteristics of the human visual system …

Widestock Exposure Modification, Kurt D. Roberts Apr 1980

Widestock Exposure Modification, Kurt D. Roberts

Theses

A system exists for the exposure of large pieces of sensitized material. The strips are exposed, processed, and viewed by transmitted light. This procedure is used to gauge the quality of the film coating process. There are three problems with the existing system: uneven illumination, the timers do not take into account light decay, and finally, the operators, on occasion, set up the wrong conditions for an exposure. The purpose of this thesis is to modify an existing process for the automated exposure of wide stock strips. These modifications are to replace the system's components with state of the art, …

Phototherapy--A Phenomenologically Based Approach To Psychological Assessment, Sheila Culkin

Theses

In this project the use of phototherapy in the psychological assessment process was proposed and explored. The conceptual roots for the phototherapy assessment used here can be found in phenomenological psychological literature, in the history and exploration of photography as an expressive art medium, and in the work of social scientists researching the use of photography in human study. The study investigates whether the photography, its content as well as its formal elements, i.e. camera angle, framing, perspective, lights and darks, distance of the subject from photographer, can reflect the experience and perception of the photographer. It has as its …

Ultrasonic Flaw Detection, Wayne Buchar Apr 1980

Ultrasonic Flaw Detection, Wayne Buchar

Theses

An ultrasonic microscope was designed and constructed to detect surface flaw defects on materials which contain natural discontinuities. The application of this flaw detection system to via-fill defects of single layer multiple layer ceramic substrates was considered. The microscope was evaluated for its depth sensitivity and resolution capabilities. The results of the experiment are that the ultrasonic system has repeatable depth sensitivities of better than ten microns, and resolution capabilities on the order of 3.3 cycles per millimeter. The application of the flaw detector to ceramic substrate via-fill defect inspection was verified.
