Correlation Of Curtis And Gullett Equation For Viscosity Of Non-Newtonian Suspensions And Franks And Rinaldi Equation For Heat Transfer Coefficients, Irene S. Wisla, John L. Kukowski May 1956

Correlation Of Curtis And Gullett Equation For Viscosity Of Non-Newtonian Suspensions And Franks And Rinaldi Equation For Heat Transfer Coefficients, Irene S. Wisla, John L. Kukowski

Theses

Curtis and Gullett (7) developed an equation correlating the effect of velocity, concentration and particle size on apparent viscosity of non-Newtonian water slurries.

μ/μw=1.02(AK/GC).105

The object of this paper was to determine the validity of using the viscosity, as determined by the Curtis-GulLett (7) equation, in predicting the heat transfer coefficient of non-Newtonian fluids, where the suspending medium is something other than pure water . The authors used various concentrations of sugar solutions as the dispersion medium, for the slurries.

A dimensionless equation resembling the flittusBoelter equation with modified exponents and additional dimensionless groups has been developed …

The Analogy Between Heat And Mass Transfer In Packed Beds, Jasper Joseph Correnti Jun 1955

The Analogy Between Heat And Mass Transfer In Packed Beds, Jasper Joseph Correnti

Theses

An operation which recurs in many branches of chemical engineering is that in which a fluid - gas or liquid - is passed through a bed of granular solids for the purpose of removing from, or adding something to the fluid (or both). In the oil and sugar industries, oils or syrups are passed through beds of adsorbents to remove impurities causing color and other undesireable effects. In the recovery of volatile solvents, air charged with solvent vapor is passed over solid adsorbents. In leaching, liquids are passed through beds of solids to remove some constituent of the solids. In …

Ultrafiltration In The Pigment Field : A Critical Literature Survey, Charles Walter Manger May 1953

Ultrafiltration In The Pigment Field : A Critical Literature Survey, Charles Walter Manger

Theses

The objective in this work has been to determine, through a critical literature survey, the possible application of ultrafiltration, and other related techniques, towards the solution of certain problems encountered in the research and testing of various pigments.

Among these problems may be mentioned the following:

  1. The determination of water-soluble salts in pigments, which when dispersed in water to leach out the salts, tend to peptize, thus being unfilterable through the usual filter paper. Among these pigments are the following: iron blue, certain chrome yellows, pigment green B, copper maroon, and several others. It may be added that these pigments …

Substituted Ureas, Roy Earl Parks May 1953

Substituted Ureas, Roy Earl Parks

Theses

Nitrosomethylurea in aqueous medium decomposes on heating to methanol, nitrogen and cyanic or isocyanic acid. Primary amines present during the decomposition react with cyanic acid to form substituted ureas, readily isolated in high purity and good yield.

The Effect Of Surface Tension Upon The Flow Of Fluids Through Packed Beds, William Charles Streib May 1953

The Effect Of Surface Tension Upon The Flow Of Fluids Through Packed Beds, William Charles Streib

Theses

Flow tests through beds of unconsolidated sand, glass beads and 1/4 inch Berl saddles showed that wide variations in the surface tension of a fluid had no significant effect on its flowrate through the bed. Viscosity and density were the only fluid properties affecting such flow. Excellent comparative results were observed between the flowrates through sand beds and those predicted by the Leva equation.

The complex Brownell and Katz equation for predicting the residual saturation of a packed bed was found to apply for fluids having a much wider range of surface tension than those originally used to derive their …

The Synthesis Of 2-Amino-4-Chlorophenol-6 Sulfonic Acid, Herman Albert Bronner Jun 1951

The Synthesis Of 2-Amino-4-Chlorophenol-6 Sulfonic Acid, Herman Albert Bronner

Theses

The work described in this thesis was undertaken with the view of exploring a reaction sequence suggested by early French investigators to synthesize 2-amino-4-chlorophenol-6-sulfonic acid especially in reference to the German claim that a low yield of product would result following this preparation, In particular, a successful application of this procedure would afford a relatively direct and inexpensive route to the sulfonic acid which is used as an azo dyestuff intermediate and could possibly find application in medicinal chemistry.

It was found that sulfonation and nitration of p-dichlorobenzene gave a high yield of the sodium-2-nitro-1,4-3 dichloro-benzene-6-sulfonate (91%) when using the …

Organic Ion-Exchange Materials, Harry Burrell Jun 1938

Organic Ion-Exchange Materials, Harry Burrell

Theses

This thesis is offered as partial fulfilment for the degree of Chemical Engineer at the Newark College of Engineering. It covers a very new subject - one which has been rather intensively developed by several investigators during the past three years. The writer has had the fortunate opportunity of working on organic ion-exchange materials at the Ellis-Foster Co., which kindly gave permission through Mr. Carleton Ellis for the publication of experimental results. Many thanks are due to Dr. Frank B. Root, the laboratory director, whose gracious, constructive criticisms aided the writer in all phases of the work.

An attempt has …
