Korean Ikat, Kyung S. Lee May 1984

Korean Ikat, Kyung S. Lee

Theses

Imagine yourself without a sewing machine, broad fabric, simple paper patterns, a tape measure, or even a sharp pair of scissors. These are the beginning of folkloric clothes. The clothes for the most part are made from square and oblong pieces, put together like a jigsaw puzzle with narrow fabric lengths from hand looms. They are made of curving circles, curves and tapered seams, with no waste of materials. It all sounds very primitive, but on a closer inspection, traditional clothes are everything that most modern fashions are not. They are practical, versatile, comfortable, durable and flattering; in short, masterpieces …

Glass In A Slump, Peter Andres May 1984

Glass In A Slump, Peter Andres

Theses

This thesis has been formed in two major segments. The first portion deals with glass information including processes and techniques. The second addresses my work in terms of personal issues, manner of approach, symbolism, composition, visual eclecticism and internal source of imagery. The subjects dealt with in the two sections are mutually modified in their working relationship. Each yields to the pressure of the other as I constantly want to do more than I am able. I have separated them for the sake of clarity, as I conceive them; the first being the means and the second the end. Even …

The Evaluation Of Models To Characterize Exposure Variation Due To Stress Birefringence In Pellicles, Charles Mondello May 1984

The Evaluation Of Models To Characterize Exposure Variation Due To Stress Birefringence In Pellicles, Charles Mondello

Theses

A study of stress birefringence in models of pellicles has been conducted. Models have been examined in terms of their isochromatic lines of stress. The intensity variations in exposure due to these lines has been characterized for a pellicle model under diametral compression. It has been found that exposure variation due to pellicle stress birefringence is below one percent.

A Study Of Color Change With Respect To Dot Misregister In Dot-On-Dot Multicolor Halftone Printing, Christopher Vasko Apr 1984

A Study Of Color Change With Respect To Dot Misregister In Dot-On-Dot Multicolor Halftone Printing, Christopher Vasko

Theses

Color variation with respect to dot misregister is a phenomenon that has long been observed in the color printing industry. In this paper the relationship between dot misregister and color change in dot-on-dot multicolor halftone printing has been investigated for the additive primaries red, green and blue. By measuring the color difference between in and out-of-register dots the direction of color shift and its magnitude can be determined along with the decrease in lightness of out-of-register samples. Misregistered red and green samples displayed a yellow color shift and misregistered blue samples displayed a purple color shift. The lightness of all …

A Mathematical Model For A Reversible Tri-Layer Optical Memory Disk, Ariel Shaw Apr 1984

A Mathematical Model For A Reversible Tri-Layer Optical Memory Disk, Ariel Shaw

Theses

A research project has been performed, in which a mathematical model for a reversible tri -layer optical memory disk was generated. The disk's reversiblity properties are based on the polycryst aline to amorphous physical phase transition that takes place in the disk's top chalcogenide layer. Given the disk's defining parameters, complex indices of refraction, and layer thicknesses, the model predicts the disks output in terms of a contrast ratio. The output, the contrast ratio, is simply the reflectivity of the chalcogenide in its amorphous state divided by the reflectivity of the chalcogenide material in its polycrystaline state.

A View Of The Creative Process Influenced By The Philosophy Of Susanne K. Langer, Robert E. Sitro, Robert Johnston

Theses

My thesis work consists of a series of figurative paintings that began as direct responses to the female nude model and then were completed without her presence, utilizing glazing and palette knife techniques. This approach allowed more freedom for creative resolutions. The creative process involved is highly personal and this paper represents an effort to gain a greater understanding of its complexities. The emphasis will be on the creative process in the visual arts. The direction of my research has been strongly influenced by the philosophy of Susanne K. Langer. I have found that her concept of what constitutes a …

The Problem Of Gelling When Silicates Are Substituted For Gum Arabic In Lithographic Fountain Solutions, David Wang Apr 1984

The Problem Of Gelling When Silicates Are Substituted For Gum Arabic In Lithographic Fountain Solutions, David Wang

Theses

The fountain solutions used for lithographic offset printing are solutions combining several chemicals. Each consists of water, some weak acid, gum arabic and alcohol in some fountain solutions, and some additives such as a nitrate, phosphate, bichromate, etc. This paper is a study of using polysilicate material instead of gum arabic in lithographic fountain solutions. Also, to solve the problem of silicate gelation by using the proper ratio of chemicals. The gelling problem of silicate material may be affected by the concentration, pH value, organic solvents and impurities, etc. Any one of the above will make the silicate material gel …

A Study Of The Influence Of Mesh On Light Reflection In Exposure Of Photosensitive Screen Printing Stencils, Suzanne Wheeler Apr 1984

A Study Of The Influence Of Mesh On Light Reflection In Exposure Of Photosensitive Screen Printing Stencils, Suzanne Wheeler

Theses

The mesh has been an interference factor in the making of close tolerance high resolution screen printing stencils. Radiation strikes the surface of the threads and is reflected into the light sensitive emulsion causing a deterioration in the sharpness of the stencil edge. This problem has been largely overcome by the introduction of dyed mesh. However, by purposely exploiting the reflective properties of the mesh, a random, or irregular pattern of dots can be produced. This is accomplished by exposing a continuous tone positive to a screen that has been coated with a photosensitive emulsion. Five screens of varying mesh …

Pwm Motor Control: Model And Servo Analysis, Rick J. Sandor Apr 1984

Pwm Motor Control: Model And Servo Analysis, Rick J. Sandor

Theses

In recent years, the performance requirements of high power servo motor systems utilizing pulse width modulated (PWM) switching amplifiers have steadily increased. These PWM motor amplifiers perform an important function in the d.c. servo system by boosting the low level command signal to the high voltage and current levels required by the motor. Ideally, this power gain is to be constant over all input frequencies but, in reality, gain is frequency dependent which affects system dynamics. The amplifier gain and phase versus frequency relationships an*i amplifier noise and d.c. offsets which may affect system response must be known to the …

Development And Experimental Verification Of A Revised Granularity Equation In Electrophotography, Kenneth Riehl Apr 1984

Development And Experimental Verification Of A Revised Granularity Equation In Electrophotography, Kenneth Riehl

Theses

An equation to describe the granularity of an electrophotographic imaging system has been developed to include the density variance attributed to the paper and toner surfaces. Granularity, G=(JA, D measurements from two conventional electrophotographic copiers were used to validate the relationship. The results show good agreement with the overall shape of the G versus density curve, however the values are not consistent with estimated toner particle size. Clustering of the toner particles is suggested as the cause of the high G values.

A Stability Test Of Dry Silver Microfilm, Christopher Edwards Apr 1984

A Stability Test Of Dry Silver Microfilm, Christopher Edwards

Theses

A research project has been completed, in which experiments involving temperature and humidity were performed on 3M experimental microfilm samples. The experiments dealt with humidity levels usual to file storage conditions and elevated temperatures to allow for accelerated aging studies. Arrhenius plots were used to extrapolate the results obtained to normal room temperatures. The data obtained indicated that the film has a life expectancy of 62 years at 30% relative humidity and 53 years at 50% when stored at 24 C.

The Fabrication And Testing Of Thick Gold Fresnel Zone Plates For High Energy X-Ray And Charged Particle Imaging, Gary F. Stone

Theses

Thick, free-standing, gold Fresnel zone plates were fabricated and tested for use as coded apertures for imaging 100 keV x-rays and 6 MeV and 10 MeV protons. Reactive Ion Etching and gold microplating techniques were extended to "thick" structures, to fabricate gold zone plates 75 um thick, with 30 um minimum zone width. Techniques were developed for using high efficiency, high resolution nuclear track detectors to record protons and produce suitable contrast shadowgraphs from the etched nuclear track detectors. The point response function of the zone plate shadow camera was experimentally measured using 100 keV x-rays and 6 MeV and …

Frequency Filtering Characteristics Of The Halftone Contact Screening System, Rudolph J. Guttosch Mar 1984

Frequency Filtering Characteristics Of The Halftone Contact Screening System, Rudolph J. Guttosch

Theses

A simplified model of the halftone contact screening system was devised and tested to determine the applicability of the model for predicting frequency transfer characteristics of the system. The model was tested using illuminance sinusoids of varying frequency as input to the halftone system. The output was obtained by optically correlating the exposing sine wave with its halftone image. It was found that the halftone system is capable of transfering information at frequencies greater than the screen frequency, and that the model generally underestimates the ability of the system to reproduce high frequency information, although the basic shape of the …
