A Signal-To-Noise Ratio Analysis Of An Autoradiographic Image Enhancement Process, Donald R. Williams Aug 1984

A Signal-To-Noise Ratio Analysis Of An Autoradiographic Image Enhancement Process, Donald R. Williams

Theses

A signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) analysis of a S-35 thiourea autoradiographic image enhancement process incorporating subproportional bleaches is performed, with emphasis on diagnostic medical Imagery. Quantifying SNR through a spatial frequency definition of DQE and NEQ, these metrics were compared between donor and receiver-composite stages. While improvements in radiometric speed and gamma were noted in the receiver-composite, these gains were more than offset in a SNR sense by correspondingly lower MTF and higher Wiener spectrum values. As a result the donor's DQF_max of .30 exceeded that of the receiver-composite's DQE_max by 50%. Similarly, ImCXA the donor's NEQ_max exceeded that of the receiver …

Information Theoretic Metrics For The Assessment Of Digital Image-Tone Restored Images, Paul W. Melnychuck Aug 1984

Information Theoretic Metrics For The Assessment Of Digital Image-Tone Restored Images, Paul W. Melnychuck

Theses

Digital image-tone restoration is examined in terms of information theoretic-based measurements. The metrics illustrate the relative degree of restorability of a 6-stop underexposure range on Kodak Tri-X pan film. An image chain model is developed to account for the discrete nature of sampled images used in digital image processing. The model includes the major system components (from object to viewed image) from which the system signal-tonoise ratio is calculated. Quantization noise and clipping are treated as signal-dependent, additive noise sources, and are shown to play a major role in degrading restored images. Although the eye characteristics are not included in …

A Quantitative Image Evaluation Study Of A Concurrent Photon Amplification Treated Emulsion, Konrad E. Kern Jul 1984

A Quantitative Image Evaluation Study Of A Concurrent Photon Amplification Treated Emulsion, Konrad E. Kern

Theses

A study was performed to evaluate the effect of concurrent photon amplification (CPA) on Kodak Tri-X Pan emulsion in regard to image quality. The study evaluated detective quantum efficiency (DQE), modulation transfer function (MTF), and information content (IC) as a function of exposure in a comparison between normal exposure and CPA. The results showed CPA to enhance image quality relative to normal exposure at very low exposure levels. As the exposure was increased, normally exposed images became comparable and then exceeded CPA exposures in image quality. The exposure level at which normal exposure became preferential was distinct with each image …

A Microprocessor Based Hybrid System For Digital Error Correction, Peter H. Sohn Jun 1984

A Microprocessor Based Hybrid System For Digital Error Correction, Peter H. Sohn

Theses

The design of a microprocessor based hybrid system for digital error correction is presented. It is shown that such a system allows for implementation of several cyclic codes at a variety of throughput rates providing variable degrees of error correction depending on current user requirements. The theoretical basis for encoding and decoding of binary BCH codes is reviewed. Design and implementation of system hardware and software are described. A method for injection of independent bit errors with controllable statistics into the system is developed, and its accuracy verified by computer simulation. This method of controllable error injection is used to …

Intelligent Computer Decision Systems, Robert J. Heath May 1984

Intelligent Computer Decision Systems, Robert J. Heath

Theses

This paper demonstrates that the concepts developed through Artificial Intelligence research are applicable to computerized information systems; and that a system of expert problem solvers and natural language interfaces exhibiting characteristics of "intelligent behavior" offer several advantages over present-day, conventional database management designs. Development of the conclusion was accomplished after an analysis and assimilation of the current literature in the field of Artificial Intelligence and participation in university symposia concerning its application to the business environment. It is concluded that incorporating the notions of learning and creativity, common sense(heuristics), and self-awareness, intelligent computer decision systems will provide managers with : …

Deposition Of Particles In Cylindrical Chamber Due To The Effect Of Image, Inertia, Viscous And Gravity Forces, Mehul J. Shah May 1984

Deposition Of Particles In Cylindrical Chamber Due To The Effect Of Image, Inertia, Viscous And Gravity Forces, Mehul J. Shah

Theses

This study investigated the behaviour of charged particles in cylindrical chambers under the influence of image, inertia, viscous and gravitational forces. The flow was considered to be laminar, steady state and incompressible. The velocity profiles considered were uniform and parabolic with symmetry about the axis of the cylinder.

The governing equations derived were based on Newton's second law of motion. The equations for the case neglecting gravity are linear second order equations and the Runge-Kutta method was used to find a numerical solution. The data hence obtained is fitted to equations using curve fitting method. These equations and graphical techniques …

Risk Assessment For New Products In Office Automation, Dolores Ann Canale May 1984

Risk Assessment For New Products In Office Automation, Dolores Ann Canale

Theses

As investors survey the industrial growth of technology for the late 1980's one area leading the range for large potential growth is the area of office automation. Though this area has been under heavy speculation by many large firms (such as IBM, AT&T and EXXON) for the pass ten years it still remains an unexplored market for many investors. The objective of this research paper is to study the risks companies. will face developing products for this horizon.

Investors believe that success in this area, as well as, many other areas of engineering rely in large measure on the willingness …

Calibration Of Flame Ionization Detector For Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Nahid Jabalameli May 1984

Calibration Of Flame Ionization Detector For Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Nahid Jabalameli

Theses

Relative Responses and Calibration Factors were developed for several volatile organic (mostly chlorinated) priority pollutant species in order to use one single stable compound (e.g.Benzene) for daily instrument calibration. This would replace the procedure of using a standard mixture of target compounds (25-35). This is of particular advantage because the standard mixture may not have all species stable or may show loss of some components relative to others due to wall adsorption in the standard (compressed gas) stainless steel cylinder.

The use of a single standard species was made possible by developing "accurate" relative response and calibration factors of all …

Deposition Of Suspension In Inclined Channels Due To The Effects Of Inertia, Gravity And Image Force, I-Hsi Chu May 1984

Deposition Of Suspension In Inclined Channels Due To The Effects Of Inertia, Gravity And Image Force, I-Hsi Chu

Theses

This investigation was made to determine the effect on the deposition of particle in an inclined parallel-plate channel due to the influences of image charge, viscosity, inertia and gravity. The flow considered was lamina, imcompressible and steady. The flow patterns considered were uniform and fully developed with symmetry about the axis of the channel.

The governing equations derived for a particle were based on Newton's Second Law of motion. Since the resulting governing equations are linear second order differential equations, Runge-Kutta algorithm is used to solve the problem and graphical techniques is used to interpret the results of the numerical …

Ceramic Sculpture, Hans Rene Schroder May 1984

Ceramic Sculpture, Hans Rene Schroder

Theses

I intend to create ceramic sculpture that will contrast and combine personal references (real or imagined) from natural and man-made environments. Within this context, I wish to explore the concepts of volume, structure, texture, and their mutual interactions. Another concern will be the use of color in order to enhance the sense of the object's construction, but also to point out the natural, random elements of ceramic processes.

Color Vision Tests Using A Calibrated Color Monitor Controlled By A Microprocessor, David Wolf May 1984

Color Vision Tests Using A Calibrated Color Monitor Controlled By A Microprocessor, David Wolf

Theses

A feasibility study was performed to determine if colors on a CRT could be measured accurately and then controlled by a computer to provide a means of performing color vision tests. Benefits from using a calibrated computer/monitor system could be decreased testing time, exact diagnosis, and possibly the means of quantifing the degree of the deficiency. The Atari 800XL Computer with a Sakata color monitor were used for the experimentation due to their low cost, availability, and ability to create the largest number of colors of any computer in the same price range. The system was calibrated and color vision …

The Vitality Of Portraiture, Diana Smolenski May 1984

The Vitality Of Portraiture, Diana Smolenski

Theses

I am a painter of people, of faces, recording lives on canvas. I would not say that I love people. They make me nervous and uncomfortable (particularly in large crowds); however, they fascinate me. I have spent hours observing their mannerisms and expressions. I have absorbed through them much of what life offers simply by watching them pass by me on streets, buses, and in cafes, parks, barrooms, and diners . I am interested in describing people through visual imagery and revealing who they are to others. My concern is not merely to duplicate reality, but to seek a higher …

Photometric Processing And Interpretation Of Ratioed Imagery By Multivariate Discriminant Analysis For Separation Of Geological Types, Donald Marsh May 1984

Photometric Processing And Interpretation Of Ratioed Imagery By Multivariate Discriminant Analysis For Separation Of Geological Types, Donald Marsh

Theses

A study has investigated the ability of ratioed information from Landsat 2 Multispectral imagery, to discriminate geological features through the application of photometric processing techniques. United States Geologic:.1 survey maps corresponding to the areas investigated have been used in correlation with ratioed imagery to identify predict and confirm geological features on the basis of resulting densitometric information. A multivariate, discriminant analysis of rock type, exposure data has enabled the fabrication of the final, optimized ratio image. The optimisation process used to predict geological types involved a priority structure that found the spectral bands with the highest discriminatory power and the …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Image Angle On Resolution Of Fine Detail Screen Printing, Amy L. Feldman May 1984

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Image Angle On Resolution Of Fine Detail Screen Printing, Amy L. Feldman

Theses

Screen printing, unlike other printing processes, requires ink to be pushed through the image carrier to the substrate. When the mesh threads and their intersections cross the image area, they act as obstructions to the ink flow. In large image areas, the effect of mesh interference is minimal. In fine detail screen printing, mesh interference is a primary cause of poor or inaccurate resolution. The trend in screen printing has been toward more and finer fine line, halftone and four-color process printing. Researching methods to minimize mesh interference will enable screen printers to gain greater control over the printing process …

A Study Of The Effect Of Coating Variations On Resolution Performance In The Single-Phase Association Product Plates, Te-Chung Chen May 1984

A Study Of The Effect Of Coating Variations On Resolution Performance In The Single-Phase Association Product Plates, Te-Chung Chen

Theses

Most people conceive of lithography as a planographic method of printing. In point of fact, only some of the original lithographic plates had truly planographic surfaces. Most lithographic plates used in industry today do not have the same material in the image and non-image areas, so they are called double-phase plates . Because of light undercutting and the roughness of the grain structure of the carrier, the use of conventional double-phase plates for fine image reproduction, where resolution is the main concern, has been limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the image formation mechanism of single-phase plates …

Indecisions In Patti Scoffield, Larry D. Lean May 1984

Indecisions In Patti Scoffield, Larry D. Lean

Theses

A thesis, for me, wasn't easy to produce. The embryonic ideas that led to its creation surfaced in the Fall of 1982. It began with "writing" that, for no other reason than to categorize, I called poems. These poems were the stimulus for the thesis that was displayed for one week in March of 1984. In the next few pages, I will try to unravel and explore some of the complexities that produced the thesis project, "Indecisions In Patti Scoffield".
