The Study Of Paper Surface Efficiency, Wandee Charoenpholphibool Sep 1989

The Study Of Paper Surface Efficiency, Wandee Charoenpholphibool

Theses

Paper surface efficiency (PSE) is a response resulting from the combination of paper gloss and oil absorptivity. A review of previous studies regarding the effect of paper surface efficiency on printed process color appearance is presented. This previous work related densitometric responses to PSE in terms of hue error and grayness. This current study investigated the PSE response in a similar manner, but densitometric responses were replaced by colorimetry. The colorimetric terms used were chroma (C*), huedifference (AH*), and lightness(L*). These correspond to hue error and grayness of the densitometric responses. Simple linear regression models relating the PSE and each …

Visual Determination Of Color Differences Using Probit Analysis: Phase Ii, Lisa Reniff Sep 1989

Visual Determination Of Color Differences Using Probit Analysis: Phase Ii, Lisa Reniff

Theses

This experiment was an extension of research begun by Alman, Berns, Snyder, and Larsen with the purpose of developing a large set of data on the perception of medium (industrial) size color difference. In the current phase of the research the same experimental procedures were followed. A total of 50 observers were asked to make pass-fail judgements of sample pairs in comparison to an anchor pair that was near neutral with a CIELAB color difference of 1.0 unit. Several pairs of various color differences were evaluated along 119 vector directions originating from 19 color centers nominally spaced in CIELAB. There …

Computerize Data Information For Architecture Design, Syau-Yi Yu Aug 1989

Computerize Data Information For Architecture Design, Syau-Yi Yu

Theses

Computer-aided architectural design is technically and commercially feasible yet experience in the architectural profession to date is paradoxical. Many who apply computers to architecture appear satisfied but the tangible benefits are seldom obvious and even where computers are used in firms it is not done to the fullest potential. Contents of this thesis are an attempt to help architecture better utilize the advantages of computer applications. To do this it is important to examine two question: what is design and what is the computer? They are similar yet distinct. Architectural design is a special kind of problem solving process; an information …

Protocol Processing Delay Analysis On Ethernet By Simulation Of Njit Ethernet, Jagdish Gangrimal Rangwani Aug 1989

Protocol Processing Delay Analysis On Ethernet By Simulation Of Njit Ethernet, Jagdish Gangrimal Rangwani

Theses

CSMA/CD based Local Area Networks account for about 75% of the installed LAN base today. As these networks are becoming available for high channel bandwidth, it is important to identify the bottlenecks in these networks. As channels are becoming high speed, bottleneck is shifting from channel to protocol processing. This delay depends on a particular implementation of the protocol and not the protocol standard itself.

This Thesis presents the analysis of delay on Ethernet. To achieve realistic results NJIT Ethernet, as it is configured, is modelled and simulated. Traffic on this network is measured and load on each segment is …

Hplc Analysis Of Pah And Selected Substituted Derivatives In Waste Incinerator Emission Particles. Section I. Analysis Of Uptake Of Bap By Earthworms Living In Bap-Contaminated Soils. Section Ii, Chin-Fang Juang

Theses

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ( PAH ) are quite persistent and some of them are potent carcinogens in mammals. They have been found in many environmental media including air, water, soil, fly ash, sediment, sewage sludge, food and plants. This thesis is a study of PAH sampled from incinerator emissim particulates, air, soil, and earthworms raised in artificially contaminated soil.

In Section I, a method is described for the analysis of PAH, nitro-PAH and quinones extracted from filters and detected by HPLC. They were collected on particulate filters which were sampled using the EPA Modified Method 5 regime from incinerator emissions. …

Being Of Shape: Being -- The Ground Through Which All Things Are, Ruth Schultz Aug 1989

Being Of Shape: Being -- The Ground Through Which All Things Are, Ruth Schultz

Theses

On these pages my intention is to address personal concerns about shape. 'Being of Shape' recognizes roots in form building of past centuries but concerns itself with shape development of this century. The intent here is not to define the words form and shape but to describe them in terms of painting. The paper will expand upon and support the paintings. Particularly, the paintings' forward, backward, and sideward progression is marked by considerations other than the history of painting. Perceptions about my nature and mental outlook as they exist in this world excite questions. Words written by those who have …

The Attempted Synthesis Of Novel Bis(Quadridentate) Niobium(Iv) Complexes And The Analyses Of The Products Resulting From The Attempted Synthesis Of Tetrakis (8-Hydroxyquinolinato) Niobium (Iv), John R. Pinkes

Theses

Four previously reported quadridentate ligands were synthesized, and the attempts made to synthesize the corresponding bis(quadridentate)niobium( IV) complexes are documented. Attempts made to synthesize the previously reported tetrakis(bidentate) niobium ( IV) complexes of benzoyltrifluoroacetylacetone (Nb(BTA)O1 and of 8- hydroxyquinoline (Nb(8-Q)4)t are also discussed. Though neither of the desired complexes was synthesized, the resulting complexes from the attempted synthesis of the Nb(8-Q)4 complex, and their subsequent analyses, are examined in detail. Along with the ligand syntheses and the attempted coraplexations , modifications in the experimental techniques and the apparatus are also discussed .

Modification Of Structurally Different Polymers Downstream Of A Microwave Plasma, J. Patrick Kusior Aug 1989

Modification Of Structurally Different Polymers Downstream Of A Microwave Plasma, J. Patrick Kusior

Theses

Since the mid 1960's there have been numerous papers published on the modification of organic polymers in a pure oxygen or oxygen-f luorocarbon plasma. In terms of this thesis, chemical modification occurs when a polymer is either passivated (fluorinated) or etched. Many parameters influence the degree to which a polymer is modified downstream of a microwave (MW) plasma. Some of the parameters include: substrate temperature, MW power, gas feed composition, chamber pressure and total gas flow rate; the latter two determine the gas flow velocity. One of the more important parameters, in the case of polyimide (PI), which influences etching, …

Vacuum Ultraviolet Modification Of Polymers, Daniel P. Tracy Aug 1989

Vacuum Ultraviolet Modification Of Polymers, Daniel P. Tracy

Theses

Helium and argon arc plasmas rotating in a magnetic field were used as a source of vacuum-ultraviolet radiation (VUV) for modifying polymer surfaces. Surface modification was examined for treated samples of poly (tetraf luoroethylene) (PTFE), fluorinated ethylenepropylene copolymer (FEP), polyimide (PI) and poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) . Weight loss and contact angle experiments were carried out for polymers exposed to arcs of various parameters and exposure times. Additional experiments were carried out using various UV filters positioned against the exposed polymer surface to determine the photon energies necessary to induce polymer modification.

A Shift Variant Filter Applied To Edge Trace Analysis, David C. Johnson Aug 1989

A Shift Variant Filter Applied To Edge Trace Analysis, David C. Johnson

Theses

A shift variant filter that automatically locates edge toe and shoulder points was used to reduce the noise in the plateau regions of simulated edges having uncorrelated noise. Edges were generated from Gaussian and triangle spread functions and represent edges produced by linear imaging systems only. Versions of these having flare were also used. For comparison a simple "chop" filter was applied to the same edges. Optical Transfer Functions were generated from the 12 categories of edges, ie. unfiltered, shift variant filtered, and chop filtered for each edge type. Modulation transfer functions of these were compared with MTFs of noiseless …

Thin Film Electroluminescence, Ian Mackay Jul 1989

Thin Film Electroluminescence, Ian Mackay

Theses

The history of electroluminescent(EL) device research is reviewed with an emphasis on the polycrystalline materials effort. The mechanism of EL behavior for direct-current(DC) and alternating-current(AC) powder structures as well as thin film devices is summarized. Current AC device characteristics are evaluated and matrix addressing constraints to low power operation are discussed. Alternatives for lower voltage operation including high dielectric strength materials for AC use, and DC device designs are considered. Attempts at the fabrication of a low voltage, pulsed operation, DC device using a sputtered active layer are reported. Limited results are reported due to difficulties with the RF deposition …

Theses

I have been very interested in the creation of space (atmosphere) by framing a portion of the environment with a viewfinder. I am specially interested in the relationship of people with people and their connection with their environment. My curiosity stems from my background in sociology; I have a BA in sociology concentrating in urban society and the structure of culture. I also studied urban anthropology and did a hands- on- investigation of Irish culture which resulted in a hand made photography book . The photographic work of Walker Evans, Ernest Haas, Robert Frank, Linda Connor, Dean Brown, Alfred Stieglitz, …

Liberation: Design That Liberates Rather Than Handicaps Us, M. Amelia Kennedy Jul 1989

Liberation: Design That Liberates Rather Than Handicaps Us, M. Amelia Kennedy

Theses

In my studies to become an industrial designer I have placed the strongest emphasis on two specific concerns: the design of products that support safe human activity (ergonomics), and the design of products that are accessible to physically impaired people. During this time I have been struck by the fact that these two concerns are always discussed separately, as if they had distinct applications in design that never related. The underlying assumption is that the general population and the the physically impaired are mutually exclusive groups. For this thesis project I set out to challenge that assumption by finding design …

Determination Of Image Quality For Added Noise As A Function Of Spatial Frequency, Yun-Ching Kuo Jul 1989

Determination Of Image Quality For Added Noise As A Function Of Spatial Frequency, Yun-Ching Kuo

Theses

The noise in color images which is referred to as chromatic noise represents a distribution within three spectral bands and contributes to chromatic and achromatic visual effects. The chromatic noise depends very strongly on the spatial frequency response of the visual system. Therefore, this study characterizes the variation in perceived chromatic noise level and generates the noise field to add to the color image samples. From these degraded images, we found that noise in low spatial frequencies is much more disturbing than in the medium and high spatial frequency regions. The perceived quality scales of the modulated chromatic noise images …

Geometric And Organic Imagery, Douglas Charles Kenney Jul 1989

Geometric And Organic Imagery, Douglas Charles Kenney

Theses

My purpose for attending graduate school was to increase my growth both as an artist and as an individual. Before coming to R.I.T. I had seven years of ceramics experience and I understood how a new environment and interaction with new people would assist my personal development. Moreover, the Master of Fine Arts degree would strengthen the quality of my work and provide me with the credentials needed to instruct at the university level. Considering the potential options an M.F.A. degree would give me, production pottery lost its appeal. I applied to graduate schools and was accepted at R.I.T. . …

Implementation Of A Research Goniospectrophotometer For Appearance Research, R. Mitchell Miller Jul 1989

Implementation Of A Research Goniospectrophotometer For Appearance Research, R. Mitchell Miller

Theses

A research-grade goniospectrophotometer was modified to improve its measurement capabilities for appearance research. Hardware, optical, and environmental modifications produced a device capable of measuring the spectral reflectance factors of a sample over the wavelength range from 380 to 700 nanometers at user-selectable illuminating and viewing geometries. Several extensive Pascal programs were written to provide a user-friendly interface to facilitate the control of the instrument, as well as, the collection, reduction, and display of data.

This historical background will also allow me to point out how the style of jewelry has changed in the past decades, and the events influencing these changes, while also giving me a better idea of how these have influenced my thesis work.

Identity Type Appropriateness Analysis Based Upon William Cavino's Classification System For Symbols And Logos: Verbal Symbols, Stewart Brett Deboer Jun 1989

Identity Type Appropriateness Analysis Based Upon William Cavino's Classification System For Symbols And Logos: Verbal Symbols, Stewart Brett Deboer

Theses

This analysis has led me to believe that an appropriate style of identity mark for LVA-LC should fall within the realm of either a verbal symbol or that of a figurative mark. The potential competition and co-existence with a second identity mark is the primary reason for focusing my attention further within those areas. A strictly typographic treatment seems to be the most appropriate format for communication, clarity, and identity.

Anaerobic Biodegradation Of Trichloroethylene By Activated Carbon Fluidized-Bed, Yeam-How Chin

Theses

Abstract - The biodegradation of Trichloroethylene by using anaerobic activated carbon fluidized bed has been investigated in the present study. High quality effluent was obtainable when the TCE influent concentration was up to 2.4 ppm in the first stage. Glucose was introduced as a cosubstrate to determine the effects of glucose/TCE ratio on the COD, Glucose and TCE removal. The experimental data indicates that the overall TCE removal efficiency was only slightly affected by TCE loading, but the first stage performance was significantly influenced by TCE loadings. It was also found that the microbial activities were affected by TCE loadings …

In order to determine the practicality of the containment technology, this research has been investigated by using more powerful tools, such as thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry …

Microbial Competition In The Biodegradation Of Phenol, Mary Ellen Frank May 1989

Microbial Competition In The Biodegradation Of Phenol, Mary Ellen Frank

Theses

Three phenol degraders were isolated from the mixed liquor of the Livingston, NJ municipal treatment plant. Shaker flask experiments using one of the degraders (a Pseudomonas sp.) resulted in the determination of its kinetic rate constants. The second phenol degrader (a Xanthamonas) lost its phenol degrading ability while being stored, and its kinetic rate constants could not be determined. The third phenol degrader (a Pseudomonas cepacia) formed flocs which interfered with the spectrophotometric determination of biomass and therefore its kinetic rate constants also could not be determined.

Mixed culture experiments were carried out using a the Pseudomonas sp. and a …
