A Simplified Procedure For Diffusion Coefficients From Cation Exchange Studies, Robert Peter Lanyon Jun 1961

A Simplified Procedure For Diffusion Coefficients From Cation Exchange Studies, Robert Peter Lanyon

Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to extend the data and to improve the procedures of previous investigators (1), (2), and (3), in the study of diffusion coefficients in aqueous media.

The main contribution of this investigation is the elimination of the tedious work of size grading, drying, weighing, and rehumidification of the Dowex 50 W - X8 resin, which is used to determine the ion exchange rates for the cations under consideration, The simplified procedure measures the resin volume by displacing a known volume of water. The method of calculating diffusion coefficients follows the procedure of (1), (2), (3), …

An Investigation Into Halftone Density Variation With Pre-Screened Graphic Emulsions, Robert Chaffee

Theses

Information relating to the variation that can be expected in utilizing Graphic Arts emulsions has been of some interest in the past several years. A test was formulated utilizing a Pre-screened graphic emulsion and was conducted each day for a period of two weeks. Test results indicate that the density level is of definate significance. The variability that can be expected at higher levels of density is outside the relm of desired conformance.

Correlation Of Pressure Drop And Holdup In A Packed Distillation Column, Nello Del Gobbo Jun 1960

Correlation Of Pressure Drop And Holdup In A Packed Distillation Column, Nello Del Gobbo

Theses

Reed and Fenske have proposed a relationship that correlates the variables of packing dimensions, operating conditions, and fluid properties involved in countercurrent flow through packed distillation columns. Pressure drop and holdup data, obtained by atmosphere is distillation in columns packed with wire helices, was applied to the correlation by Reed and Fenske with good results. At reduced pressures limited data indicated the possibility of variations in the correlation as a function of the molecular weight of the material distilled.

Cummins investigated the effect of reduced pressure and holdup in distillation for several liquids using protruded packing. An attempt to correlate …

Correlation Of Maximum Air Velocity With Angle Of Installation For Wire Mesh Mist Eliminators, John Lawrence Reid May 1960

Correlation Of Maximum Air Velocity With Angle Of Installation For Wire Mesh Mist Eliminators, John Lawrence Reid

Theses

Wire mesh entrainment separators were installed in a vertical cylindrical column at varying angles from the horizontal. With a fixed liquid loading, air flow rates were varied in order to determine the maximum capacity of the mist eliminator for any given angle of installation. Mist eliminators studied were 4" thick and constructed of 0. 011" diameter Type 304 stainless steel wire with a density of 12 lbs. per cubic foot and 5 lbs. per cubic foot.

For normal installations of mist eliminators in the horizontal plane, the following equation is used to determine maximum allowable design capacity:

V = K …

Secondary "Low Intensity" Exposure Method Of Latensification, Vincent Gallo, Donald Forst Jan 1960

Secondary "Low Intensity" Exposure Method Of Latensification, Vincent Gallo, Donald Forst

Theses

A study was made into the effect of the secondary "low Intensity” latensification on Super Panchro Press, Type 8 film. The response variables tested for were speed, D-Max, gamma, and fog. Tests were conducted to appraise the effect of Daylight and Tungsten illumination for Exposure and Latensification and their interaction. The experiment revealed that a significant speed increase is possible; gamma is affected by Latensification time and illumination; D-Max is affected by illumination; and that the degree of latensification is dependent upon the time of secondary exposure. It was found that a significant latensification effect can be achieved with a …

The Volumetric Analysis Of Nitrocompounds Using Chromous Chloride, Charles Caslin Jamison May 1959

The Volumetric Analysis Of Nitrocompounds Using Chromous Chloride, Charles Caslin Jamison

Theses

Chromous chloride has been shown to be more efficient than titanous chloride in the reduction of refractory nitro and nitramine groups in both aromatic and aliphatic compounds.

It was found that concentrated hydrochloric acid increases the efficiency of chromous chloride to a point where it would reduce the most difficult to deduce nitro-campounds.

The compounds studied were p-Nitromethylaniline, 2,4-Dinitrotoluene, 2,4-Dinitroaniline, 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene, Nitroguanidine, I,9-Di4cetoxy-2,4,6,8-penta-methylenetetranitramine, Sym-Cyclotrimethylenetrinitrimine, and Sym-Cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine.

Correlation Of Maximum Air Velocity With Liquid Entrainment Loading For Wire Mesh Mist Eliminators, Edward W. Poppele

Theses

Two styles of Initted 'wire mesh entrainment separators,or demisters were investigated to determine maximun useful air flow rates over a wide range of liquid entrainmant loadings. The demisters studiod were six-inch thickniess and constructed of 0.011 inch diameter stainless steel wire.

The expression widely used to determine allowable design velocity for gas through demisters is:

V=K/((d1, dv)/ dv) (1)

where
V = Maximum Degree gas velocity, feet per second,
K = is a constant for the system,
d= density of entrained liquid phase, pounds per cubic foot,
dv = density of gaseous phase, pounds per cubic foot.

Ion Exchange Technology In The Sodium And Ferric Ion-Dowex 50 Systems, Alfred George Hoerrner

Theses

This investigation was directed toward the extension of data on the kinetics of monovalent - trivalent cation exchange and to establish data on the relationship between temperature and total capacity of an ion exchange resin. In order to compare the present study to a previous investigation by Klosowski (2), the capacity of the resin used for ferric and chromic ions was also measured.

In the kinetic study, the ferric ion-hydrogen ion exchange using Dowex 50 X-8 resin was studied in an agitated vessel. A two-bladed marine type propellor was used and the agitator speed was varied from 400 to 800 …

Ferro And Ferricyanides In Industrial Waste Water, Frederick Joseph Neff May 1958

Ferro And Ferricyanides In Industrial Waste Water, Frederick Joseph Neff

Theses

The role of the Ferro and ferricyanides in present day waste treatment practice is reviewed. Possible conventional methods for the disposal of the compounds appear inadequate. It is shown experimentally that the cyanide content of Ferrocyanide may be oxidized by hypochlorite in alkaline solution when exposed to ultra-violet light and that no oxidation of the cyanide occurs when reacted with hypochlorite in diffuse laboratory light.

A Method Of Analytical Dye Densitometry Utilizing Infrared Radiation, Calvin Besore May 1958

A Method Of Analytical Dye Densitometry Utilizing Infrared Radiation, Calvin Besore

Theses

A densitometric technique is described which yields analytical dye densities from a negative- positive color print film in a time less than would normally be required to process the film. In this technique, a correlation is established between the dye density produced by the complete process and the silver density produced by the initial development, the latter being determined by an application of infrared densitometry. Equipment utilized and procedure followed are described and some theoretical aspects and limitations reviewed.

The Electrolytic Regeneration Of A Phenidone-Hydroquinone Developer, Howard Hall Apr 1958

The Electrolytic Regeneration Of A Phenidone-Hydroquinone Developer, Howard Hall

Theses

An attempt was made to regenerate a phenidone -hydroquinone developer. During the electrolysis the concentration of all the components remained constant with the exception of bromide, which was released as bromine from the anode. The possible use of the apparatus to remove bromide and reduce the replenishment rate in a continous processing system is suggested.

Kinetics Of Chromium-Hydrogen Ion Exchange, Frank Joseph Klosowski, Alfred John Meinhardt Jun 1957

Kinetics Of Chromium-Hydrogen Ion Exchange, Frank Joseph Klosowski, Alfred John Meinhardt

Theses

In this investigation the rates of trivalent-univalent cation exchange in a stirred batch reactor for the chromic ion-Dovex 50 system have been measured. The progress of the reaction has been followed continuously by measuring the change in hydrogen ion concentration of the bulk solution as a function of time with a Beckman pH Meter having external electrodes immersed in the reaction mixture.

This work has been undertaken to determine the rate-controlling mechanism of the reaction, and the influence of agitator speed, particle size, and solution concentration on the rate of exchange. Agitator speed. studied, as limited by the equipment, are …

Measurement Of The Specific Surface Of Perlite, Richard Gordon Lamborn, Carl Henry Vogel Jun 1957

Measurement Of The Specific Surface Of Perlite, Richard Gordon Lamborn, Carl Henry Vogel

Theses

A low temperature gas adsorption apparatus was designed for the purpose of measuring the total surface area of solids using the well known B.E.T. method.

The apparatus was designed so that several different gases could be used as adsorbates without evacuating the gas reservoirs each time a different adsorbate was to be used. This was accomplished by providing three gas reservoirs of sufficient capacity to allow several determinations to be made at moderate initial reservoir pressures of from two to three pounds per square inch. A separate bulb and manometer system was supplied for determining the saturation pressures of adsorbates …

An Investigation Of The Hofman Reaction As A Possible Method Of Synthesizing 3,4-Diamino Pyridine, Harry William Zbinden Jun 1957

An Investigation Of The Hofman Reaction As A Possible Method Of Synthesizing 3,4-Diamino Pyridine, Harry William Zbinden

Theses

This study presents an attempt to evaluate the Hofman degradation as a method of synthesizing 3,4-diamino-pyridine from isoquinolinic acid. Since the pyridine ring is known to he stable under the reaction conditions, and analogous aromatic diamides have been prepared by previous investigators, the major problem studied is the effect of hypohalites on ortho-oriented aromatic diamides.

Three methods of approaching the problem were unsuccessful in producing the desired diamine, but the last method, stepwise degradation of each group separately, may be workable with some changes.

The most significant result was the observation of an unexpected side reaction when the diamide was …

Liquid-Gas Flow In Venturi Meter And Sharp Edged Orifice, Frank John Chwalek Jun 1956

Liquid-Gas Flow In Venturi Meter And Sharp Edged Orifice, Frank John Chwalek

Theses

The results of a study of pressure drops across a 5/32 inch throat venturi meter and a 5/32 inch thin plate sharp-edged orifice for the horizontal cocurrent, flow of the air-water two-phase two-fluid system in a 3/4 inch pipe under essentially isothermal conditions, are presented. This is the first critical study of two phase flow in a Venturi meter and. in a 5/32" orifice.

Flows of water of 0.1 to 1.7 gallons per minute with air rates in range of 0.00022 lbs/sec. to 0.0092 lbs/sec. of air mixed in were studied. All flows were turbulent when judged with the conventional …

Electrodeposition Of Cellulose And Carboxy-Methylcellulose, Charles Edward Driesens Jr. Jun 1956

Electrodeposition Of Cellulose And Carboxy-Methylcellulose, Charles Edward Driesens Jr.

Theses

The previous work done by Frank Cozzarelli on the eleotrodeposition of cellulose from a sodium zincate-urea-cellulose system has been verified, except that zinc was found to deposit on the cathode at all voltages and current densities within the range of the optimum conditions for deposition. The optimum conditions are: voltage - 1.10 to 1.28 volts; current density 0.13 to 1.10 amperes/square foot; electrode material - copper. Current efficiencies range from 0.80 to 5.53%.

A chelate-like complex formed from the sodium zincate and urea which couples with the cellulose has been proposed as a possible explaination of the mechanism governing the …

Hydrolysis Of Sodium Silicofluoride, Frank Arthur Graf Jun 1956

Hydrolysis Of Sodium Silicofluoride, Frank Arthur Graf

Theses

The kinetics of an apparent solubility decrease of commercial sodium fluoride encountered in a piece of equipment designed to produce saturated sodium fluoride solution was Investigated, in order to understand why a consistently saturated solution was not possible to achieve with plain tap water as solvent.

The main impurity, about 1 percent sodium silicofluoride, coats the sodium fluoride crystals, resulting in an equilibrium shift during dissolution of the salt in water; and under certain conditions results in the formation of a protective gel. Therefore, in order to produce a constant strength sodium fluoride solution, this coated impurity must be decomposed …

Power Requirements In Pigment Comminution, Joseph Timothy Gildersleeve Jun 1956

Power Requirements In Pigment Comminution, Joseph Timothy Gildersleeve

Theses

The results of this work prove that the relation between total work and surface area developed in the wet grinding of pigments is an exponential function. The following equations were experimentally determined for the pigments studied:

For Zinc Oxide; P = .090 (Δs)1.05

For Titanium Dioxide: P = .086 (Δs)1.072

For Calcium Carbonate: P = .107 (Δs)0.98

This work shows that in the grinding of sub-sieve size pigments the Rittinger and Bond theories which state that surface area developed is directly proportional to total work, are not valid and cannot be applied.

It is also shown in another plot that …

A Study Of The Partial Oxidation Of Monosubstituted-P-Xylenes, Frederick John Honold May 1956

A Study Of The Partial Oxidation Of Monosubstituted-P-Xylenes, Frederick John Honold

Theses

In the oxidation of 2-nitro-p-xylene (I) using alkaline potassium permanganate, the only product isolated was 2-nitro-terephthalic acid (II). Approximately half of the starting material was oxidized. The other half remained as unreacted starting material.

The chromium trioxide oxidation of 2-nitro-p-xylene (I) in glacial acetic acid, using sulfuric acid as a catalyst, yielded only 3-nitro-p-toluic acid (III).

The chromium trioxide oxidations, of 2-N-acetylamino-p-xylens (IV) with and without sulfuric acid catalyst, yielded no oxidation products which could be identified. About half of the starting material was recovered in each case.

In a low temperature alkaline potassium permanganate oxidation of 2-N-acetyIamino-p-xylene a small …
