Stylistic Analysis And Recognition Of Piano Sonatas Of Four Composers -- Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Anton Webern, Emily Feng-Hwa Lin-Jeng Mar 1987

Stylistic Analysis And Recognition Of Piano Sonatas Of Four Composers -- Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Anton Webern, Emily Feng-Hwa Lin-Jeng

Theses

This thesis describes a system that incorporates techniques developed by musicologists to do stylistic analysis of music, an important applied field in music theory analysis. To do the analysis requires the knowledge of many musicological analysis methods and pattern recognition algorithms that are central issues to this project. In addition, AI techniques of learning were used to improve the whole system's skills. The conclusions reached as a result of this project were that computers can perform musical tasks usually associated exclusively with naturally intelligent musicologists, and that learning techniques can expand and enrich the behavior of musically intelligent systems.

Predictive Questioning In Teaching Reading Comprehension To Intermediate Level Students, Catherine M. Cassy Jan 1987

Predictive Questioning In Teaching Reading Comprehension To Intermediate Level Students, Catherine M. Cassy

Theses

This study involved nine sixth grade students In determining the effects of using predictive questioning techniques to Improve reading comprehension in Intermediate level students versus the results of using traditional reading methods. Present research gives supporting evidence that teachers spend too little time developing questioning abilities and therefore ask simple questions that require only literal comprehension skills . Although simple questioning has been found t o improve the reader's ability to recall specific information from the text , it Is a teacher- centered process that allows students to take a passive role in reading comprehension. The need for the focus …

Fric: An Expert System To Recognize Fricatives, Karen A. Atkinson

Theses

In building a speaker independent continuous speech understanding sys tem, a method is needed to translate the speech signal to a phoneme string. Current recognition attempts based on statistical methods are not as accurate as desired and require vast numbers of templates for comparison. On the other hand, human experts can transcribe phoneme strings from spectrograms with a high degree of accuracy, without needing to match unidentified seg ments against identified templates. This paper discusses the development of Fric, an expert system for identifying fricative phonemes, intended to func tion as part of a phoneme identification knowledge source. Fric attempts …

A Toolkit For Uncertainty Reasoning And Representation Using Fuzzy Set Theory In Prolog Expert Systems, Marcelle M. Bicker

Theses

This thesis examines the issue of uncertainty reasoning and representation in expert systems. Uncertainty and expert systems are defined. The value of uncertainty in expert systems as an approximation of human reasoning is stressed. Five alternative methods of dealing with uncertainty are explored. These include Bayesian probabilities, Mycin confirmation theory, fuzzy set theory, Dempster-Shafer's theory of evidence and a theory of endorsements. A toolkit to apply uncertainty processing in PROLOG expert systems is developed using fuzzy set theory as the basis for uncertainty reasoning and representation. The concepts of fuzzy logic and approximate reasoning are utilized in the implementation. The …

Jmsl - A Language Derived From Apl, John Mark Smeenk Oct 1986

Jmsl - A Language Derived From Apl, John Mark Smeenk

Theses

A new AFL-derived language called JMSL is presented which rnodifies seven aspects of APL so that many current and potential APL users could benefit from a language which is easier to learn, read, write, and maintain. JMSL uses ASCII tokens instead of APL symbols to remedy interfacing, extensibility, and readability problems with APL. JMSL revises and extends APL built-in capabilities to provide greater expression and improved symbol-meaning correspondence. JMSL includes a new notation for nested arrays (a powerful data structure which combines the array processing of APL with the tree processing of LISP). JMSL provides hierarchical directories (similar to PASCAL …

A Presentation Of The Self-Organizing Paradigm; Speculation On Its Impact On Health, Gail Dahl Schomaker Jan 1986

A Presentation Of The Self-Organizing Paradigm; Speculation On Its Impact On Health, Gail Dahl Schomaker

Theses

This thesis explores the emergence of a new paradigm in understanding health, grounded in the scientific principles of self-organization and systems theory. Gail Dahl Schomaker presents a comprehensive examination of the shift from the traditional Newtonian mechanical worldview to the dynamic, process-oriented perspective rooted in the theory of dissipative structures as formulated by Ilya Prigogine. Central to this new worldview is the conceptualization of living organisms, including humans, as open systems that maintain and increase order through continual interaction with their environment.

The paper is structured to introduce key theoretical models from systems theory, cybernetics, and holistic health, progressively building …

A Comparative Study Of Second Grade Students On The Effects Of The Use Of Manipulative Aids On The Operational And Recall Skills In The Multiplication Of Three, Kell Brown

Theses

The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the operational and recall ability of second grade children, after instruction and the use of manipulative aids , to understand the multiplication of three. Multiplication of numbers at the early stages, in most mathematics programs, provides for rote memorization and drill instead of concept understanding. Most practices and drills require only answers to the facts, which provide little indication that a student can explain or show how that answer was obtained. Memorizing the multiplication facts is important, but at this early age the operation on those numbers to obtain an answer …
